What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Earlier in the year we released an alpha build to everyone who pre-ordered, and the feedback we received on that build helped us to vastly improve the game. We're excited to release via Early Access because we know Crypt of the NecroDancer is going to improve greatly as a result. Our community is amazing!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our goal is to finish zone 4 and the final bosses in early 2015. However, if the game proves to be popular we hope to continue to add additional features beyond that. We are having a great time developing this game and we want to keep on improving it!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will include zone 4, the final boss battles, as well as more playable characters.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version includes zones 1, 2, and 3. It also includes 5 of the 8 playable characters. Many fans have racked up hundreds of hours of playtime already, so there's no shortage of fun to be had with this current version!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game's base price will be $14.99 both during Early Access, and after.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We've already taken many suggestions from the community and incorporated them in the game. By expanding our community via Early Access we look forward to doing this even more!”

Update #14: Eli, Rifle, "Beta" and tons more!

Hi folks! Lots of fun stuff in today's update for you! But first I wanted to explain something.

We were previously saying that the game was still in "alpha" which seemed to confuse quite a few people. We were using the strict definition of "alpha" which means "feature complete but not content complete". The problem with this is that a lot of people hear the term "alpha" and think that the game is FAR from completion, which is not true! We only have a few months of dev left, at most. So, despite it not being a 100% accurate term in our opinions, we've decided to switch to calling the game "beta". Hopefully this all makes sense! We do still have some core chunks of content to add, but the gameplay that is there is certainly close enough to finished to call it "beta".

Anyway, without further ado, here are the new features in this build!:
- Added a new character!: Eli. Unlock him by completing zone 3, regular or hardcore.
- Added a new weapon: The Rifle
- Daggers and spears can now be thrown!
- Added monstrous shopkeepers who show up VERY rarely
- Made custom music work with non-ASCII filenames on Windows
- Implemented cloud saves using Steam's remote storage API
- Improved mod zipping/unzipping system without the use of external tools
- Fixed it so that crates + barrels can no longer be confused
- Added text to blood weapons and crown of thorns to show how many kills left until heal
- Made Dove’s bombs teleport enemies away rather than confuse them
- The EXE is now “code signed” to help cut down on false positives from virus scanners
- Made it so that bats move away from Dove, when confused
- Fix issue with crates/barrels dropping enemies too often, and enemies dying right away to the bomb or attack
- Fixed bug where HEARTTHROB achievement wouldn’t be triggered if the 10th heart was gained via Ring or Shrine of Peace
- Fixed bug where Orange Scroll could sometimes give out Dove’s flower as a weapon
- Made phasing damage hurt skeleton knights immediately
- Fixed bug where Blood Magic and Blood Drum could prevent a flawless victory in a boss battle
- Made crates/barrels drop good stuff slightly more often
- Made Scroll of Need give you a glass rapier if you have no weapon at all
- Fixed issue where Death Metal, Deep Blues, and 3-1 were skipping the wrong beat with Shrine of Rhythm
- Made Shrine of Space give out Miner’s Cap if bombed after being activated
- If Dove is surrounded by enemies and uses Scroll of Need, it now casts the Fear spell
- Made it so that Death Metal won’t spawn skeletons right next to bounce traps
- Allowed use of bombs in training mode
- Made ghasts not auto-hit player when bombed
- Fixed bug where you could still die after winning a Dove run
- Fixed bug where Aria and Dove would die immediately upon entering Dance Pad mode
- Fixed bug where ghosts could spawn inside walls in the Death Metal boss battle
- Fixed a memory leak
- Fixed issue where picking up multiple coin piles with Ring of Gold would result in incorrect flyaways
- Changed Janitor’s text to say 'NON-HARDCORE item pool'
- Fixed bug with confuse particles showing up too low, when player is confused
- Fixed issue with crates/barrels spawning enemies after trap door
- Made it so crates/barrels/urns can’t be Feared
- Made it so wraithlikes + moles don’t spawn for Eli
- Fixed issue where buying hearts in lobby with Eli/Dove gives you an extra heart as other characters
- Fixed bug where clones move when you do a non-movement action
- Monk unlock after zone 1 Cadence
- Dove unlock after zone 2 Cadence
- Changed text in character select room
- Popup in lobby when player has unlocked a new character
- Fixed trap door clipping when trap door is above a wall
- Fixed bug where sometimes flyaways don't appear on locked stairs in lobby
- Set item hints to ON by default for new players
- Changed the game from "alpha" to "beta" since it was confusing so many people, and since we're getting closer to the end

Early Access Review
By the time this is written, the game is still in Early Access. So this is going to be edited in the future when new stuff is added. Until then…

Oh my GOD. THIS GLORIOUS GAME. I’ve been very interested in it for quite a long time and therefore I was dangerously hyped. The result? I haven’t made a greater purchase during Steam sales since Skyrim.

As you may have seen, Crypt of the NecroDancer is a hardcore roguelike game where the whole dungeon goes at the music rhythm. The main purpose as usual is to keep going deeper while the levels get harder and harder. I am not an expert of the genre but those who are shouldn’t be disappointed by the amount of roguelike elements this game has.

Although it’s still an Early Access the game already has enough content to be played for HUNDREDS of hours. Moreover, this game is extremely challenging, so I say hi to every game risk-seeker that is reading this at the moment.

Pros:

+ Randomized dungeons, making every time you play this game different.
+ 3 Zones, filled with 3 levels plus a Boss Room for each. A 4th Zone is being created while I write this. Zones can be played individually once they’re unlocked, in case you want to practice one of them in particular or simply don’t struggle into the Hardcore mode.
+ The soundtrack is a pure EARGASM. This can actually be one of the greatest features of this game, actually. D. Baranowsky, seriously, you did it again. Just take my money and my soul, your music is worth much more.
+ Many characters available (and more to come), with unique skills and weaknesses.
+ Practise Mode, allowing you to learn and master patterns for both minor enemies and Bosses.
+ Daily Challenge dungeons, making this game very updated for the challenge lover.

Cons:

- You can sync your MP3 Music. Seriously, who the hell would change Baranowsky’s tracks?
- Easy to lose your beat combo when you press Pause and then resume.
- Confusing Gamepad settings in case you want to set an alternative key for arrow combinations (such as Up+Down).
- Too addictive. My real life responsabilities hate this game.

All in all, just grab this gem ‘cause none of you will ever be disappointed. And as I said this is in development, so I strongly believe this will just go for more. Better. Funnier. THIS IS THE CRYPT OF THE NECRODANCER DUDES!

Early Access Final Mark: 9.5/10 These kind of games can save our generations.

By far my favorite Early Access title thus far. Crypt of the Necrodancer (CofN) should be given a ton of credit for pitching a title that perfectly melds rouge-lites and rhythm-based gameplay. The main mechanic revolves around moving and attacking to the beat of the music and failing to even miss one beat results in a multiplier reset, which altogether works very well. CofN also deserves points in the style department; enemies dance, the floor lights up when the multiplier is up, and the shopkeeper sings along during the high points of the songs. Even though the game retains many rogue-like tropes, it truly separates itself from others with the way it was designed. Music is absolutely stellar (composer of the original Binding of Issac and Super Meat Boy). Controls are intuitive (you only need the four-directional arrows!).

Like in Rogue Legacy, you can unlock various equipment after each subsequent run if you have enough crystals (which you can find after each level. The lobby serves as a way to access this content. Here you can also find individual monster training rooms and various other modes like Hardcore or Daily Challenges.

For the price, it's definitely worthy of the admission. If you're either a fan of rhythm or rogue-like games, this is without a doubt a must-have.

This game is so addicting I had to uninstall it for my own health... this is an amazing game and can literally make you forget the time. I've only had it for two days and I have 15 hours on it so far, 7.5 hours a day. My fingers would start to ache but I continued playing, hungry for a new speedrun record in hardcore mode. My fingers couldn't stop shaking when I wasn't playing it. I may recommend this game but only if you have good self control, because once you start playing it, it's very difficult to stop.

Not only is this a fun game with an interesting hook, but it has a soundtrack so good that it removed all Taylor Swift songs from my head. Crypt of the Necrodancer filled a Blank Space in the video game world, it let the fun Out of the Woods and into your funnest Wildest Dreams, brimming with personality and Style… All You Had to Say? you might ask, I Wish You Would because the answer is no. I Know Places and I know games… and this game has a place in my inventory. With many characters to choose from the simple game mechanic can get turned on it’s head and you’ll wonder How To Get The Girl back. If you have any Bad Blood toward indie games you’ll just wave to Shake It Off so you too can enjoy a fantastic game. with a killer soundtrack that’s so good it’ll make you tell Tay Sway that you are NOT getting back together...

Pretty great, one of the best rogue-likes I've played in a while, as a matter of fact, it was one of the only rogue-likes to spark any interest to me. And as soon as I played it, I fell in love with it. Granted, it is still in Early Access, which means there is not too much content, but there is a lot of fun to be had.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is the most unique and replayable rogue-like I've ever played. For years, people have been mixing rogue-like with many different genres. 2D platformers, Real-time strategy, dungeon-crawling, there's been all kinds of hybrids. But this mixture really blows the rest away. A rogue-like, with rhythm? At first, it might sound rediculous. It might sound like it would never work. But, Brace Yourself Games made it work. And boy, did they make it work. Think of Crypt as a Mystery Dungeon game. A turn-based over the head dungeon crawler. That is basically what it is. The turns are every beat in the music, and both you and the enemies move each beat. The soundtrack was specifically made to have an easy to keep beat, and the visuals at the bottom of the screen guide you as well. If you still have a hard time keeping the beat, there is a character unlocked from the beginning that isn't affected by the rhythm. Everything just moves when you do, and you can experience everything the game has to offer just with that character. So, really, if you're a fan of the rogue-like genre, there is no reason not to give this game a try.

+ Nicely done pixel art, characters are colorful and easy to identify
+ Tons of unique items and enemies that keep every run fresh
+ Rhythm is a simple and fun mechanic, not an annoying gimmick
+ Special character unlocked from the start for those who can't keep a beat
+++ An amazing soundtrack by Danny Baranowsky, composer for Super Meat Boy and the original Binding of Isaac

+/- Simple, four button controls. Activating items usually means pressing two buttons at once, which can be a bit weird sometimes. These controls can be changed in the options, however.

- Bit of a high learning curve. Playing individual zones with upgrades is far easier than playing through the entire game starting with only two hearts and a dagger.
- Still in early access. You'll probably find some minor bugs, (nothing gamebreaking) some items/characters are still being added, and the final level is yet to be released.

Overall, I'd say buy it. If the early access part really bothers you that much, then just wait. It'll be done in the next few months.

While the game is still in Beta, what has been completed is worthwhile.

Necrodancer is a rhythm, turn-based, roguelike. It can be played with just directional keys, so dancepad friendly. You move your character to the beats of Danny Baranowsky (Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac) as you make your way through 3 (4 upon release) zones, each containing 3 levels and a boss fight.

There are currently 7 playable characters offering various challenges with a variety of weapons and items to utilize. Floors are randomly generated and you can race for better times or complete to get the highest score. The game is challenging, but fair so when you die, it was probably your fault. The game provides a training feature so you can practice against any enemy and hone your strategies. Other features include a daily challenge, seeded runs, and creating your own levels. You can even customize the music that plays as well as mod in game sprites.

I don't write a lot of reviews, but I play a LOT of games. This one... this one is special. I beat it. On Hardcore mode. And I still fire it up daily. Playing it is a JOY. The music is great, the game rewards skill and focus, and there's enough randomness - but not too much.

Congrats to the devs, this is a very, very sweet game.

Best darn thing since Thriller!
hell I actually used Thriller while slaying undead monsters.
If only I had a Mj skin for my character.

Darkness falls across the land
The midnite hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y'all's neighborhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell.
