Captain your own space ship and roam the galaxy in 3D in this tactical space simulator with tons of RPG depth ! Space has never looked so inviting - but images can betray...

It has been two years since the end of the second Gemini war, the situation in the wartorn system is further from resolution than ever.
The collection of freedom fighters named Gemini League is now reduced to a small group, with no power or influence, after losing their leaders. The Empire meanwhile, has used the re-opened Starpoint to occupy the once renegade Gemini sector - and beyond.

A multitude of Imperial warship fleets and mammoth motherships have crushed every trace of opposition. The situation was looking bleak, when they suddenly halted their armada and re-shifted their focus on fortifying Starpoint with staggering numbers. Rumours soon spread that they were afraid of something coming after them through the T-gate, from what was supposed to be the core of the Empire. What are they running from that makes even the mighty Empire tremble?

Starpoint Gemini 2 will take players on a breath taking journey, with dark secrets and unimaginable twists that will finally unveil the incredible truth...

Key features:

  • Complex, but easy-to-use RPG system, now coupled with dynamic real-time 3D combat.
  • Explore the dynamic game world as a whole, rather than through individual maps.
  • Use T-Gates, wormholes and riftways to travel faster around the Gemini system .
  • Fifty diverse factions ranging from states and companies to outlaws, locked in a powerstruggle, with over 100 commodities to trade or plunder.
  • Special revocable licenses acquired from factions offer various bonuses and unlock new options.
  • Hire mercenary captains to follow you on your travels and share your fate, and employ officers to fill key positions on your ship (engineering, navigation, tactical).
  • Random missions get generated depending on the player’s actions and allegiances.
  • Over 70 unique ships, fully upgradeable with various ship systems, with a.o. visible turrets, and a large arsenal of destructive weapons to blast enemies to pieces.
  • Direct ship controls create complete immersion.
  • Advanced physics provided by NVIDIA PhysX technology

Well...the game looks nice but is actually quite boring. Here is why:

1. Unengaging story

The story consists of a lot of text (white on color, not very legible) and really really atrocious voice acting (which sometimes just cuts out). There are so many factions with text descriptions I did not bother to read all of them. Honestly I did not understand half of it because I have not played the predecessor. The game did not present its universe in an engaging way.

2. Simple missions

The free missions are all randomly generated but they consist of either go to A and kill / capture or go to A and scan / repair (same menu button) or go to A and transport to B.

The campaign missions are the same. Go to A and usually kill everything there...done. Sometimes you need to ferry stuff. But the whole involvement is detached. You arrive...the game cuts to sequence and some voice acting..suddenly to reappear with enemies kill them...cut to the next short scene...done. There is no drama, no real action, no emotional involvment. I did not respond emotionally to the characters, who are just pictures with horrible accents.

Trading and mining is a horrible grind if you like it. It is certainly helpful in the beginning but not worth your time later on. Just take the "kill pirates" mission and blast everything to hell.

Once I got capturing ships down...I had so much money I could have bought ships that were not yet unlocked for my character level.

3. Simple combat

Usually you fly somewhere, click F for "Fire at will" and maneuver a bit around. There is not much strategy involved. Starfleet Command or Space Empires Starfury had more interesting combat. Manal aiming is cumbersome because you can't really see the ships at longer ranges and there is no help with aiming. Due to the turret placement your shots might not go where your reticle automatic fire it is most of the time.

Also medium difficulty is way to easy. I had a destroyer that could easily defeat a dreadnought without breaking a sweat (loosing shields).

4. technical stuff

Although the combat is in 3D the star sector is actually in 2D. The map is in 2D. You can fly "up" and "down" but it feels like all planets and stations are on the same plane. It is not a globe but rather a "thick" square.

Flying around especially in the beginning is tedious because jumpdrives or jumpgates are way too expensive and when you have the money to buy jumps you can get a perk that allows you free use of the jump gate system.

After about 10 hours the game just felt like a grind to get better ships and more weapons and do all the story missions (usually just killing enemies). It simply got boring.

Starpoint Gemini 2 is a continuation of a space simulator series developed by Little Green Men Games and published by Iceberg Interactive. Compared with the first part of the game this is much more beautiful both visually and technically. Better is the graphics and effects and here is a fully 3D space battles!

I had never been a fan of space simulators, and this is my first experience in games of this genre. I can easily say - the game is just wonderful! It has everything - a completely gigantic open world, an interesting role-playing system, the excitement of the study the vast expanses of space, stunning visual components, and the music ... it perfectly complements the atmosphere of the game.

The game has a story, I would not say that it is unreally interesting, but it is good. It will help you to learn the story of the protagonist, a deeper plunge into the world to know who fills it and so on. In the story, we are investigating the death of the father of main hero, of course it's not a simple murder, his death is connected with the dispute between the Empire and the free states and appearing of some powerful third force. All in all story mode is interesting and fascinating, but sometimes can be boring.

Endless corners of space in the Starpoint Gemini 2 are filled with representatives of different factions, from different scientific organizations and associations of traders to space pirates, who with great pleasure help you get rid of your goods. The game is a brilliant representative of the sandbox genre, you really are free in your actions, even the story campaign does not impose itself, in the main menu of the game, you can choose one of two modes: campaign and free mode. The huge open world is very beautiful and at the same time is dangerous. Every minute of game you see unprecedented beauty landscapes, asteroid fields, planets, space stations, nebulas, and the rest of the mysterious charm of the vast expanses of space. The main thing is to remain vigilant, in space no one can hear your scream.

Here you can become anyone, brave space ranger fighting pirates, the merchant who travels between the planets, space miner who breaks down the asteroids and sells materials obtained or you can become a mercenary who makes various contracts. For example, orders for the capture or killing of criminals, assisting in the investigation of cosmic anomalies or repairing broken equipment at the space stations. It is not hard to understand the game economy. To make money not less interesting than to spend them. Many different types of ships, weapons, equipment and improvements for them are waiting for you, as long as you have the money to pay for all this. The interface is practical and easy to use, only necessary information displayed. You can fly using the mouse or keyboard, choice is yours.

Bad points in the game are for example the inability to create your own fleet or to build your own space station and you can get only money and experience for the tasks, but not the items. If you play for a long time, you can get bored but, in general, it is safe to say that the game is worth to spend a few evenings with it. If you ever wanted to start your experience with the genre of space simulators, the Starpoint Gemini 2 is your choice.

Gigantic open space world to explore
Visually the game is very beautiful
Many different types of weapons and equipment improvements
It is not difficult to master
A large number ways to make money
Many different objects: asteroid fields, wormhole, nebula, faults
Steam Workshop
NVIDIA PhysX technology

Sometimes monotonous and boring
There is no way to build your fleet, or space base

Total: 8.5 / 10

At a glance Starpoint Gemeni 2 is a sandbox space sim, nothing special and it has been done better before.

I could live with it if the game features an interesting story, which the game does. The game also has a tendency to crash during or shortly after finishing a story mission which makes it a race to reach a save point before the game crashes and you need to redo the mission. So the redemption from story doesn't apply. If anything it just makes me more frustrated.

Looking further into the game, you realize it is a single player MMORPG, ship upgrades are gated behind arbitrary level requirements. Ships handle basically the same except for the top speed, so your carrier is just as agile as the starting gunship.

Weapon upgrades follow a similar MMORPG route, some weapons are poor and you go through the game trying to find better weapons. Weapons that are described in awkward and sometimes even incorrect ways, such as "rate of fire" being the delay between each shot. Once you get over the initial hump of how weapons operate you realize you need a calculator to figure out which weapon to use.

Sure I can play this, but all the time doing so there is a thought in my head asking why I am playing this game when I have better games available.

Edit: 2015-11-25
I just wanted to add that this game isn't necessarily bad, if they fixed the weapon descriptions and the crashes I'd actually consider recommend it.

I consider the X-series, especially X-3, to be more enjoyable. I do not want to advertise for other games in a review, which is why this was at first omnitted, but since so many replies have been about it I'll add it.

This was the game I wanted when I wanted to be a space captain/pirate. There are ships. The ships come in different sizes and configurations. You start in a tin can with a couple of turrets and work your way up to space battleships. Some of them can be challenging to get your hands on, if a faction you've ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off is the only one that makes it. There are different weapon systems, each with strengths and weaknesses. There can be a story/plot if you want it to be the driving reason behind your space-captaining/piracy. The game punishes you for thinking you are a main character with plot armor and can charge at whatever your quest is without strategy. It rewards you for doing a bit of grinding on the side for money and xp, be that with asteroid mining, quasi-legal trading, playing space police, or space piracy.

Being a space game, there are a lot of different controls and interface options. There are less than other space games I've tried. Navigation is relatively simple, and wormholes, ion storms and radiation clouds make that more interesting than the vastness of space probably is. You need captain 'levels' to fly bigger ships, but xp can be earned from basically doing anything. Aiming is done via turrets. Pick a view mode you like, aim the turrets yourself or let the computer do it for you, find a ship you like, and fly around space. That's what you're here for right?

It took me 40 to 50 hours to finish each story line, taking my time and taking advantage of the vast numbers of pirates just waiting to be boarded and salvaged. Ultimately this was the first 3d space game I've tried that gave me some complexity while still making 'fly a ship through space' enjoyably easy. I enjoy leveling, working my way up from the bottom and becoming an unstoppable juggernaut. I enjoy flying a ship through space and shooting things with lasers, or guns, or plasma cannons. I enjoy some odd challenges and impossible odds. I enjoy exploring. I felt accomplished when I finished the plot in my decked out dreadnought. I enjoyed this game. And the free DLC.

Spaaaaaaaaace. What's your favorite thing about space? (mine's space)
