"This past year of Early Access has been an incredible ride,” said Danijel Mihokovic, Lead Scripter at Little Green Men Games. “We have seen an amazing community take shape and our thanks go out to them. Our forums really got overwhelmed with positive feedback, productive opinions and countless new ideas, and in a joint effort between us and our community, we have managed to raise the quality of the game significantly. As we embrace the game’s official release today, we understand one thing - this is the end of one process and the beginning of another. Even after 50 updates during Early Access, the wish-list created on the community forums will enable and oblige us to continue to refine the game and add new content for a long, long while. And that is something we really look forward to."

We come in peace...

So... it has been noted on numerous occasions that some of you esteemed ladies and gentlemen want to put faces to our names. As much as we frown on such frivolities, it is only fair that we abide by your wishes ;).

Please refrain from beating us into a pulp if you see us passing somewhere in the street. While I'm personally not a big fan of my bearded face , I'd rather not part with it either ;).

Oh and Oliver is in the video too... sort of... so have a look won't you ;).

PLEASE keep this in mind when considering a purchase. The current version does run on Vista though, but there is a special procedure for it (you need to opt into a special product branch) which is described in detail on the game discussion board.

Captain your own space ship and roam the galaxy in 3D in this tactical space simulator with tons of RPG depth ! Space has never looked so inviting - but images can betray...

It has been two years since the end of the second Gemini war, and the situation in the wartorn system is further from resolution than ever before. The collection of freedom fighters named Gemini League is now reduced to a small group, with no power or influence, after losing their leaders. The Empire meanwhile, has used the re-opened Starpoint to occupy the once renegade Gemini sector - and beyond.

A multitude of Imperial warship fleets and mammoth motherships have crushed every trace of opposition. The situation was looking bleak, when they suddenly halted their armada and re-shifted their focus on fortifying Starpoint with staggering numbers. Rumours soon spread that they were afraid of something coming after them through the T-gate, from what was supposed to be the core of the Empire. What are they running from that makes even the mighty Empire tremble?

Starpoint Gemini 2 will take players on a breath taking journey, with dark secrets and unimaginable twists that will finally unveil the incredible truth...

Key features:

  • Hire mercenary captains to follow you on your travels and share your fate, and employ officers to fill key positions on your ship (engineering, navigation, tactical).
  • Random missions get generated depending on the player’s actions and allegiances.
  • Over 70 unique ships, fully upgradeable with various ship systems, with a.o. visible turrets, and a large arsenal of destructive weapons to blast enemies to pieces.

Does a crap job of explaining mechanics. The voice work and story is rubbish.
But the gameplay itself is fairly good. Complex but not unnecessarily convolued like the X series.

Chances are if you want a space game, you'll get at least a few good hours out of this. It also has modding support which should lead to some great stuff from the community, as always.

Starpoint Gemini feels like a PC game I played when I was younger. It's relatively rough around the edges and there is nothing groundbreaking about the graphics--but it represents a kind of space exploration game in a very cohesive package. The soundtrack is filled with ambient electronica and is a real highlight for me; scanning pulsars and exploring unknown reaches of space feels extremely gratifying and peaceful at the same time.

The game itself lets you explore space however you choose: you can become a merchant flying cargo through sectors, a bounty hunter going after pirates, an explorer of the universe and scanning anomalies and space oddities etc, etc. It's a game with great potential that doesn't hold you hand from start to finish. If you have any interest in Sci-fi/space exploration games (Freelancer/Star Trek: Bridge Commander/Eve Online) this game does a great job filling that role.

A solid effort for those who enjoyed Freelancer. Early impressions 7/10. The fact I've been pretty non stop should bump it up more, but there are a few nagging things I'd like to see improved over time.

1) When I'm shooting at a target many of the rounds appear to pass through and not impact on the targets shield or ship body. I'm still doing damage, but that sense of kinetic/energy contact would help the immersion.
2) AI tactics are in the early game underwhelming. I'd like to see enemies do more drastic evasive manouevers to look like they're concerned about you as a threat a bit,

Starpoint Gemini 2 is a complete turn-around from the quality of the first game. It's prettier, it's satisfyingly complex and most of all, it's a lot of fun. It's blend of RPG elements, freeroaming gameplay and atmosphere is great, and pretty well refined. While the voice acting isn't anything to write home about, the simple joy of adjusting the loadout for your ships, hiring officers, mercs and troopers, and leveling up can be downright intoxicating.

A couple small issues nag at me, however. At the time of this review, the ability to adjust shadow quality or post-processing in the video options menu is still locked. There are some balancing issues that make themselves painfully apparent within the first hour or so of gameplay, namely the rate at which you accrue money. Tackling big number bounties might seem like a great idea, but they're prohibitively difficult (as of level 7, all the available bounties were way way out of my level range) and grinding freelance missions can sometimes feel monotonous. Additionally, the lack of communications chatter between ships can make space feel somewhat sterile. When rescuing a ship from pirates, it would be great to hear a panicked captain's voice pleading for assistance, or thanking me for the help. These are minor gripes about what amounts to an overall great experience.

Granted, I haven't played through a ton of the story campaign content, and my time with the game might be small compared to others, but having seen such a triumphant turn-around from the first entry, I felt compelled to gush a little bit, and congratulate the developers. Well done, guys!

I tend to not be one to jump on the early access titles very often, but it was honestly really cool watching the development of this game, seeing community input being utilized, and watching something grow from nothing. I can say truthfully that I don't regret purchasing this game during early access in the least.

First Impressions:
For an early access game this game is already really playable as the sandbox mode works just fine. See this game as EVE offline. You fly your own ship (which you can upgrade or just buy a bigger one) around a HUGE universe that has highway like wormholes and natural wormholes. You can also move around anywhere under your own power so just traveling on highways or through wormholes isn't a must. There are hints of fleets in thwere but haven't been able to start one, although you can already by extra ships and leave them in your garage.

Your Ship:
Upgrades for your ships are plenty and the weapon systems include, lasers, plasma cannons, railguns, missiles, and much more which you can freely add to any supporting hardpoint on your ship (light for guns, heavy for ammo consuming launchers). All upgrades and repairs happen on the station and I've noticed you really need to shop around the stations to get the best stuff.

Your Crew:
Yes, this game has crews as even your starting ship is more then the usual fighters you get in other games. There are 3 shipstations which you can hire crew for. The crew gives you boosts on weapons or ship systems like engines, shields and cloaks depending on their skills. Again every station/planet offers different crews with different skills.

Gameplay:
Random missions are generated all the time wich includes simple "go there and shoot.." missions, scan anomalies and bringing around cargo and passengers. You can visit many many stations (and planets) to upgrade, repair, hire crew, trade and lots more. The universe is very much alive as you encounter friendly and non friendly ships all over the place. Some sectors and stations really don't like you and can form a real challange when fighting in those sectors (enemy reinforcemants and stations blasting you). Fighting is mouse controlled, aim and shoot your light weapons by clicking the right mouse button and fire your heavy ammo consuming weapons with X. Also you can give the command "Fire at will" which will basically unleash all weapons on all in range enemies (this can be very much fun to watch while you just fly around avoiding damage with guns blazing).

Trade is already present in the game but is still in it's first stages so you get very little info on prices except for a news scroller that is viewable on every planet and station.

Development:
Patches are rolling out in a steady pace and the devs are very active on the forums (Post a question, suggestion or comment and you'll likely get a reply within the hour). This just gives you extra confidence to buy this game in early access and help in it's development.

Current Verdict July 18 2014:
Highly recommended early access game that is only getting better with each update.

*My above opinion still hasen't changed, latest update is again full of content. Recommend to pick up on current sale :)

Current Verdict September 16 2014:
Latest patches have added full controller support for fans of those things. Also the game is nearly complete as release is almost here, they've been busy with optimizing the game and adding final features, complete campaign/story mode is not finished yet but devs have indicated it's coming soon! (And in the past they've proven time and time again that they uphold their word!).

So still a big fat recommend from me at this final stage of early access.
