Community Spotlight: January Workshop Highlights

Darkest greetings Underlord,

It’s been a little over a month since the last time we peered into the broiling cauldron of creation that is the WFTO Workshop, a place where new maps and challenges are dreamed up and shared across the community.

In that time we’ve seen the number of user-created levels explode from 240 to an incredible 649! That’s nearly 13 maps per day since our last spotlight, or 15 maps per day since the Map Editor was released!

With such a huge number of maps now available it can be tough to pick out the best of the best; lucky for you we’ve sent in our spirit workers to select a handful of the greatest maps on the Workshop! Let’s take a look at what the community crackpots have been brewing up!

Community Map Spotlight

We’ve put ourselves through our paces on this one, Underlord! Combing through the huge number of new maps, we’ve selected just a few of our favourites to shine the spotlight on!

This month we’re even changing the rules and granting all highlighted makers the coveted “Golden Worker Skin”! (Don’t worry last month’s winners, you’ll get one too!) We'll be sending the rewards out in the next few days!

Ribbons by Deteno
4p Skirmish

A deceptively simple map but one with plenty of depth. Deteno has worked wonders to create this level which features winding ribbons of water and gold, plenty of shrines to contest, and an Empire fortress to overrun!

Lakefront by MastaX
4p Skirmish

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of unusual levels that require thinking outside the box. In Lakefront, all four players have a moderately sized pre-shaped dungeon at the edge of a large open lake of water.

With only a small but easily defendable space available to you on your edge, be prepared to push forward and face your rivals at regular intervals for control over the space and shrines in the center of the map.

1 Player vs Empire

This stunning level is a huge slog against multiple Empire fortresses. Be prepared to utilise every trick in your arsenal to overcome the enemy. This map absolutely rewards exploration, with many back doors, secrets and more to discover! The Prophecy spell will certainly be your friend here!

4p Skirmish

This huge 4-player skirmish level will see you scrambling to control the crossings into your map quarter. A huge chasm creates a natural divide between each Underlord, acting both as a defence and a centre for conflict.

2p Skirmish

While the 4-player maps have certainly garnered the attention this month, there is a 2-player map which has stood out in our minds. Deepmist is a demonstration of how adding Empire units to an otherwise normal level can help add depth and challenge.

Throughout the map you’ll discover ghouls, which serve to slow your progress and protect important areas. Be careful when exploring, lest you be overwhelmed by a clattering horde!

The Rift by Vetraeus
4p Skirmish

We hope that you brought your compass, Underlord - you’re certainly going to need it to navigate the chasms. This huge level is filled with tunnels, shrines and objectives to fight over. But beware as there are some very powerful hostile units within the Rift. Explore too quickly and you’ll find nothing but death!

Wading through 649 maps is a challenging task! There are a lot of fantastic designs out there that unfortunately won’t see a mention this week. But rest assured we’re always looking for more!

As we head into the new year with WFTO we're looking to make it easier for you to get in touch, report bugs to us and see progress being made on the issues that matter most to you!

To this end we're introducing a new bug tracker, a fully featured suite that will allow you to search for known bugs, comment on them, raise new ones or just track our progress!

Pro - Its Dungeon Keeper all over again!

Con - Its Dungeon Keeper all over again...

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the original Dungeon Keepers. Love the humour, the creatures and minions. And when I learned about this game, I was thrilled! A new dungeon keeper?! Awesome! And when I first started playing, I was happy as the nostalgia washed over me...

The thing is, this isn't 'Dungeon Keeper 3.0'. Its not even 'Dungeon Keeper 2.5'. Its 'What if we remade Dungeon Keeper 2 with new graphics and new names/creatures so we don't get sued'.
This, in itself, IS NOT A BAD THING. But if you played DK2 to death, as i did, then you will notice that it tries to be more of the same, and it doesn't always succeed.

I do heartily recommend this game, as it was fun whilst it kept my attention (almost 9 hours). But it did only feel like I was only adding to the hundreds of hours I'd already put into DK1 + 2 - and as such, It was just more of the same for me. At the end of the day, it replicates the originals so well/much, that I may as well be playing the originals - something I haven't had the urge to do in 15 years. Yes, there are new mechanics added, but its like saying that adding a 'go faster stripe' to a car changes the car; It doesn't.

- If you've never played the originals, and think you might enjoy this, give it a go.
- If you tried playing the originals, enjoyed it but the outdated graphics ruined it for ya, give this a go.
- If you played the originals when they came out, loved them, and want more, give this a go.
- If, however, you played the originals and want something MORE than an almost 20 year old game with a fresh lick of paint (however awesome it was) - might wanna give this a miss.

The game was given to me for review purposes

War for the Overworld is a real-time-strategy / dungeon management game which was developed and published by Subterranean Studios. The game was made possible through Kickstarter and seeks to establish itself as the spiritual successor to the original Dungeon Keeper series of games, going so far as to hire the same narrator from that series. The game and its devs were also praised by Peter Molyneux, the original creator of Dungeon Keeper.

The plot is pretty straight forward and borrows heavily from the Overlord series' plot line where the player takes on the role of a newly resurrected evil overlord who seeks to rebuild his domain and take vengeance against the currently ruling human empire.

+ Good artistic design that manages to capture the look and feel of Dungeon Keeper
+ Nice graphics, specially for a Unity engine game
+ Excellent voice acting from Richard Ridings (the Dungeon Keeper narrator)
+ The game was able to preserve DK's gameplay while making a few improvements of their own such as the 'Sins' system.
+ Skill / Tech Tree system that makes for several variations in dungeon builds (Sins system)
+ Good sound effects and atmosphere
+ Good variety of monster / minions with different skills and abilities
+ Fun campaign maps and missions
+ Fast paced action
+ Constant updates and interaction by the developers with the community
+ Good game time

- The tutorial missions does not cover a lot of the game's mechanics
- The gameplay is essentially RTS but with the Combat / Minion control being woefully underdeveloped
- Severe performance drops during late game situations: (specially when there are a lot of units on the map)
- Tool Tips is lacking: For example, if you move your mouse over to the Spells Tab, It should show something like this “Spells Tab (B)” so that the player immediately knows that its bound to the B key but it doesn't so you'll have to refer back to the Controls Menu to see which key is bound to which UI element. This is very inconvenient specially for a fast paced game like this.
- First Person / Possession mode needs a lot of work: particularly, the fact that the character models of the currently possessed minion sometimes clip over the camera.

+/- Demon hand: I know its part of Dungeon Keeper's legacy but it would have been nice to have an option to use the regular mouse cursor.
+/- Story is predictable specially if you've played Overlord 1 and 2.

GOOD GAME. War for the Overworld is certainly NOT Dungeon Keeper 3 but its the closest one out there. The developers are certainly passionate about this game and should no doubt be praised for making a much better spiritual successor with such a limited budget unlike that other game that should be buried deep beneath the earth and forgotten.

After 4 months, I'd say the game still needs some more time before you buy it.

It IS a good Dungeon Keeper game in terms of the gameplay, however at the moment - the Campaign is woefully designed and is not a fun Dungeon Keeping experience. It is a zerg-rush from level to level still riddled with bugs and poor design choices that apparently aren't going to be addressed.

In larger levels the game will stutter horrendously every 2-3 seconds, it won't crash and you /can/ complete the level, but it really does ruin the experience. To clarify I'm on an i5, GTX 970, 16GB RAM.

Multiplayer is dead due to the poor release decision with the game not being fully finished. That action alone has killed the potential community for this game. Additionally there are connection issues that probably pushed more people away.

It's a shame really.

9/10 for Gameplay
5/10 for Performance.
3/10 for Design Implementation.

6/10 Overall. Buy a few months from now when it's actually finished.

[Version] v1.3

One of the main reasons I purchased this is because I was a MAJOR fan of Dungeon Keeper back in the day. I loved the series and played it a lot as a kid and always remember it being one of my personal favorites.

When I started playing this one; all of the memories came back and it was a great feeling. The ability to play a game that dated to my childhood, and for it to be updated with more stuff than what was available before; especially multiplayer. They did a good job of keeping to the way it was remembered back in DK 1 and 2, as well as adding some more unique features in that keeps it entertaining.

The graphics received an over-haul, and it seems to perform alright on almost any modern machine (I can also get decent FPS from my laptop if I close out everything else running - mind you the laptop runs 16GB DDR3 RAM w/ AMD graphics). It does get sluggish quite a bit as you build your dungeon, even on a pretty high-end desktop. Changing the graphics settings from Ultra down to normal or even low sometimes still doesn't fix the sluggish frame drops that you'll receive. The game needs more optimization which I hope they start focusing on.

The music keeps to the theme, and the sound effects are great. The only sound I do miss, is the mistress that entered your dungeon from having the torture chamber (the crack of the whip and the mmmm lol). The original announcer is back, along with the funny jokes and commentary that anyone who played the DK series loved.

I only wish that the multiplayer support was there a bit more. I attempted to search for an online game last night, and I found one server total which was a 1v1 match and was full, so I just went back and did a skirmish with the CPU. The community aspect could be a thousand times better, and right now it is almost next to impossible to get anyone else in an online match unless you are playing with a friend.

Hopefully with more updates, this game becomes extremely popular. It is showing a lot of promise, and has great potential. Keep up the good work, and thanks for bringing me back to my childhood.

Love this game so much and been waiting for years for it, and cannot wait to play the Expansion.

It is very much like Dungeon keeper 2 with almost every aspect right down to the original narrator.
Loved the Storyline for it and gaining all the achievements.

Thankyou Subterranean Games for not giving up and continuing the dream!
