Community Spotlight: Multiplayer Tournament Results & Fan Wallpapers

Darkest greetings Underlord,

Amongst these darkest nights of the year it’s easy to lose sight of the things that are truly important in life. Things like having one of your evil magnificence throw a bard on the torture rack, so you can sit back and let the heat of the scorching fire and the tone-death screams of the burning mortal wash over you.

It’s fortunate for you then Underlord that I have compiled the most outstanding events from across the realm of Kairos for your perusing. Read on Underlord!

Multiplayer Tournament Results

The Multiplayer tournament held amongst your fellow Underlords has yielded most entertaining results - amongst those 26 Underlords who entered the arena one has emerged as the greatest of all!

Slichizard, a long-standing member of the WFTO community, has risen to the lofty standing of Grand Underlord! With only a single defeat in the group stages against Vindi_NL, he continued to dominate his rivals at each step in the elimination brackets.

Defeating such opponents as Nutter666, Beneathar, semi-finalist (and tourney host) Marados, and finally facing off against Böhser_Onkel_AUT in the final, he emerged victorious from the broken Cores of the others. As the overall winner of the tournament he’ll be the first to receive a Founder’s code and the prestigious Golden Worker skin, which is sure to drive fear into the enemies he’ll face in the future!

Runner-up Böhser_Onkel_AUT and third place semi-finalist Vindi_NL have both received Founder’s codes which grant them access to exclusive Kickstarter and Founder’s Themes.

That concludes the results of this very first WFTO Multiplayer tournament. Marados is already planning to run another in the future so keep your eyes peeled for more!

We’ve been watching the tournament very closely, and with the community reporting directly to us on balance we’ll be taking the feedback into account for future balancing - in particular the balance of the devastatingly powerful “Behemoth Rush”.

Community Spotlight: Wallpapers by DJPavlusha

While other Underlords have been participating in a gruesome death sport there are some who have taken the time to create works of art. Though we don’t usually rate such … unconventional behaviours … in our Underlords, we can’t help but appreciate the fine work that DJPavlusha has been doing over in this thread.

Over the past few weeks he’s been churning out some quite frankly excellent looking wallpapers of Dungeon Cores, Shrines, Inhibitors, and practically every other major set piece in WFTO.

With twenty-five 1920x1080 wallpapers in the opening post at the time of writing there are a whole bunch to choose from. But if you want something custom - a different size, colour or even object - he’s been happy to oblige thus far!

Check out all his wallpapers in this thread!

Have something WFTO related you'd like to share? Get in touch, we love to see the great stuff our community makes!

Until next time Underlord,

– WFTO Team

  • Fixed an issue for clients in multiplayer where the well of souls would not generate wraiths
  • Fixed a bug where the Fortify ritual would not repair walls
  • Fixed a rare issue where you would no longer be able to tag tiles for digging each attempt would prompt “You do not have enough gold”

Re: The Jack O'Worker skin

There have been some questions as to why we're charging for this skin. The short answer is that we're committed to providing as much content as possible for free to you, our players.

We decided that by releasing a small, fun skin that doesn't affect gameplay at what we believe to be a reasonable price point will help us to continue in that direction.

The release of the Jack O'Worker does not mean the end of free content in fact this is what you can expect for free in the coming months:

  • The Map Editor in Patch 1.3
  • Multiplayer Mutators
  • Enhanced Survival Mode
  • New aspects (Rituals, spells, units etc.) for Multiplayer/Skirmish/Survival/Sandbox modes, including the non-campaign specific ones from the upcoming Heart of Gold expansion
  • and hopefully more!

If you're wondering what paid content is coming or on the agenda:
  • Heart of Gold expansion - Adding new fully VOd campaign levels and expanding the story of WFTO, free for Early Adopters
  • Likely a few more worker skins, some of which will donate proceeds to charity
  • A few other things which will donate to charity

I hope that helps to clear things up, we look forward to hearing your views on the Jack O'Worker and the latest patch! Keep your eyes peeled for more content coming soon!

Until next time Underlords,

- WFTO Team

Bienvenue dans War for the Overworld !

TL;DR - One of your minions wants to get off Mr. Bones Wild Ride.

10/10 would not get on.

I could not recommend this game in its' previous release state. However, now I actually can. After its' 1.1 patch, the majority of what this game was missing in its release verison has finally been added.

War for the Overworld, as a game, is...dungeon keeper 3. There really isn't another way to describe it. If Peter Molyneaux and the Bullfrog team were still around today, I feel the game we would have gotten would not be too far off from this. Are there flaws in this game? Obviously. Every game has flaws. But as far as managing to capture the feel of dungeon keeper and make an all-round fun game, this kickstarter title succeeds where higher-budget games such as the Dungeons series failed. With EA making no attempt to actually capitalize on a once great series, and in fact ruining it for a new generation by slamming a free to play business model that shames the series GREATLY (even paying off reviewers EA style couldn't keep dungeon keeper mobile's critic rating up high enough to appear worthwhile), it's nice to see we still have fans of the old game out there who want to see it made new.

Am I rambling a lot on what Dungeon Keeper was? Yep. For those of you unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, this is a game where you manage a...well, dungeon, from the perspective of an evil overlord. Throughout the campaign, rather than being the hero who explores and brings death to dungeons, you build the dungeon and fight back against the good. You can accomplish this through the use of powerful minions as well as various traps and such that your enemy won't (hopefully) see coming, and of course a little bit of god power for good measure (*zap*). You have minimal control over your minions, so this isn't exactly an RTS and it sure as all hell is NOT an actions per minute game - in fact, trying to go all MLG clicky-clicky on this game would likely just hinder you more than anything else. Your control consists of picking minions or imps up and throwing them where you want them to be and...well, hoping they do what you want. You can lay down rally flags to get everyone's attention to a specific spot, but if you try to keep them out for too long you'll end up with a bunch of unhappy minions telling the flag to ♥♥♥♥ off and going to bed. You also have to keep them regularly paid with gold, which handily is also the resource you use for literally everything else. Fail in this aspect, and minions will just pack up shop and leave to go elsewhere.

Map design is what made Dungeon Keeper and, as a result, War for the Overworld, extremely unique. There is not a lot of map when you actually get in - it's just a bunch of dirt, some impenetrable rocks, water, lava, maybe a chasm, and gold in the dirt. Oh, and your central dungeon core. Don't lose that...seriously. You have to dig out your own map, tile by tile, and lay down rooms in areas to correspond with what you want and your minions' needs - a lair to sleep, a slaughterpen to eat, a tavern to provide money for you and make people happy, a barracks to train, etc...and of course the arena where you can have minions fight to the death for no reason outside of entertainment. It appears to entertain the other minions to watch their brethren get slaughtered too...and of course, the other benefit to building your own map is deciding when and where to dig to place down traps and such, and if you happen to sight enemy traps...you can dig around them.

By now you may think this is a twisted, evil game where everything is gruesome and terrible. And you'd be right and wrong. While you do play as evil, this is a very lighthearted game as the original dungeon keeper games were. Featuring awesome voice narration from the original DK's narrator, you'll find yourself often having a lot of fun just from hearing some of the things minions have to say, or the random (but amusing) pop culture references made by the narrator.

And when you're done with the campaign, you'll find it is still very fun to play in skirmish or multiplayer modes. In these modes, you and up to 3 other AI or players will duke it out, each building their own dungeons and attacking one another for no reason other than ♥♥♥♥ you, my ground. Unlike the original dungeon keeper, War for the Overworld actually does a decent job of working properly in skirmish and multiplayer. While it was possible in Dungeon Keeper 2 to do the same, the game just didn't quite feel the same as it was very campaign-oriented. WFTO implements some new systems that help the game to work properly in either situation. There is also sandbox mode where you just build in a big, empty map free of gold or mana issues, and survival mode which is...honestly still being worked on and I have very little experience in it, but it's self explanatory.

Overall, this game is easily worth your $30. Hell, go the extra $10 and get the $40 version just for the soundtrack if nothing else - the soundtrack is pure evil and outstanding and it fits PERFECTLY with a game of this theme. This kickstarted game more than deserves your money (after a rocky launch).

TL:DR? See Conclusion

The game was given to me for review purposes

War for the Overworld is a real-time-strategy / dungeon management game which was developed and published by Subterranean Studios. The game was made possible through Kickstarter and seeks to establish itself as the spiritual successor to the original Dungeon Keeper series of games, going so far as to hire the same narrator from that series. The game and its devs were also praised by Peter Molyneux, the original creator of Dungeon Keeper.

The plot is pretty straight forward and borrows heavily from the Overlord series' plot line where the player takes on the role of a newly resurrected evil overlord who seeks to rebuild his domain and take vengeance against the currently ruling human empire.

+ Good artistic design that manages to capture the look and feel of Dungeon Keeper
+ Nice graphics, specially for a Unity engine game
+ Excellent voice acting from Richard Ridings (the Dungeon Keeper narrator)
+ The game was able to preserve DK's gameplay while making a few improvements of their own such as the 'Sins' system.
+ Skill / Tech Tree system that makes for several variations in dungeon builds (Sins system)
+ Good sound effects and atmosphere
+ Good variety of monster / minions with different skills and abilities
+ Fun campaign maps and missions
+ Fast paced action
+ Constant updates and interaction by the developers with the community
+ Good game time

- The tutorial missions does not cover a lot of the game's mechanics
- The gameplay is essentially RTS but with the Combat / Minion control being woefully underdeveloped
- Severe performance drops during late game situations: (specially when there are a lot of units on the map)
- Tool Tips is lacking: For example, if you move your mouse over to the Spells Tab, It should show something like this “Spells Tab (B)” so that the player immediately knows that its bound to the B key but it doesn't so you'll have to refer back to the Controls Menu to see which key is bound to which UI element. This is very inconvenient specially for a fast paced game like this.
- First Person / Possession mode needs a lot of work: particularly, the fact that the character models of the currently possessed minion sometimes clip over the camera.

+/- Demon hand: I know its part of Dungeon Keeper's legacy but it would have been nice to have an option to use the regular mouse cursor.
+/- Story is predictable specially if you've played Overlord 1 and 2.

GOOD GAME. War for the Overworld is certainly NOT Dungeon Keeper 3 but its the closest one out there. The developers are certainly passionate about this game and should no doubt be praised for making a much better spiritual successor with such a limited budget unlike that other game that should be buried deep beneath the earth and forgotten.
