Future Updates

War for the Overworld is in a state of constant evolution. For the team here at Subterranean Games, this project is a labour of love, and we still feel there is plenty of room to expand the game. With this in mind, we’ll be continuing to patch War for the Overworld for many months to come.

Alongside regular bug fixes and feature improvements, you can also expect to see new content introduced to the game, in the form of both Free Updates and Paid DLC. The world of Kairos has plenty of room for expansion and we can’t wait to explore more of the story.

Planned features include:

  • Survival Mode
  • Basic Map Editor (Which we can improve later!)
  • Spin-off campaign stories
  • And more!

The first Paid DLC will be a short campaign that supplements the story of the original campaign. This DLC will be released later this year and will be free to everyone who purchased the game before the 2nd of May 2015.

Survival Mode

Survival mode will be receiving some improvements with some truly fleshed out features. This DLC will be completely free to everyone, regardless of when you purchase the game and will be released later this year.

Survival Mode will feature:

  • Survival Challenges - Compete against pre-set challenges, or create your own and share them with your friends!
  • Leaderboards - Prove you are the greatest Underlord of our time and climb to the top of the Leaderboards!
  • More Levels - More Survival Levels for you to try your evil hand at!
  • Mutators - Change up the game to make it harder, easier, to just plain weirder through a number of pre-set mutators and even design your own!

Informace o hře

Tired of invading dungeons? It's time you build your own!

Do you feel you are in a slump? Monotonously disemboweling evil guys in endless quests for gold and a slightly better pair of boots? You are starting to wonder... are heroics really your calling? Welcome to the War for the Overworld!

War for the Overworld is a Dungeon Management Game that employs your favourite aspects of the RTS and God Game genres. You play an all-powerful, malevolent Underlord, long banished to the Aether. With unrivaled dark power and an insatiable desire for bloody conquest, you will arise once more, and reclaim your realm!

In your absence, the Underworld lost its way. It became feeble and afraid of the Empire of the Overworld, which grew strong and boldly comfortable in its quiet retirement from evil-slaying. Carve out your dungeon from the soil and stones of the Underworld, and build dozens of unique rooms to attract a myriad of creatures to your halls to work and fight for you.

In addition to your faithful followers, you have destructive spells and powerful rituals to cast upon any unsuspecting goodly Hero (or rival Underlord) who dares to breach your unhallowed halls. With your unmatched dark powers and mighty army of bloodthirsty minions, you are ready for your War for the Overworld!

Key Features

  • Build Your Dungeon - Excavate and build your dungeon beneath the earth of the Overworld. Design it’s layout as you see fit, creating an underground fortress filled with a wide variety of rooms, each with a unique use and purpose.

  • Evil Is Back - Play as an Underlord who has awakened from a deep slumber after countless years drifting in the Aether. This realm hosts a variety of enemies — both Heroes and Underlords will stand in your path as you fight for dominance of the Overworld

  • Veins of Evil - Choose from over 60 rooms, spells, potions, rituals, defenses and constructs in the Veins of Evil as you progress through the game. There are a plethora of possible Vein combinations you can use to conquer the Overworld. Create your own unique flavour of evil!

  • Fortify Your Domain - Build a wide variety of defenses within your walls to defend against — and destroy — those who seek to invade your domain.

  • Cast Wicked Spells - Call down unholy magic to strengthen your dungeon, route enemy forces, flood corridors with Micropiglets, or simply turn a meddlesome Hero into a geyser of giblets.

  • Unleash Devastating Rituals - Punish your foes or empower your own forces with game-changing Rituals that can do anything from raising an undead army, to instantly fortifying your entire dungeon.

  • Command Powerful Minions - Over 20 minions await your call, and will gladly work and fight under your banner... if you provide them with all the creature comforts they demand.

  • Conquer the Overworld - Play through a feature-length campaign, facing off against the Emperor of the Overworld as you fight for complete supremacy inthe Realm of Kairos

  • Destroy your Rivals - Take the fight to your rival Underlords in Skirmish or Multiplayer matches! (four player support coming soon!)

  • Test your Mettle - Run the gauntlet of the prototype Survival mode and see if you can top the high score against waves of enemies!

You know... I WANT to love this game. Like most players i came from the old DK series and jumped on WFTO as soon as it was announced. I stuck with it through Early Access waiting for the final release. Now that it has been released and i have played through the campaign i am left with a 'is that it' feeling.

The Campaign levels mostly relied upon rushes, there was none of the patient 'build, probe, attack and assimilate' of the DK series. This was more of a 'build a few rooms, cap out your army then rush'.
Some of the levels required it, you could not beat them otherwise. The lack of thought needed to beat the campaign was a real turn-off for me.

There were so many spells, potions and rituals that i had no need for.
I basically beat the game with just 3 of the available defences (door, bombard and lotus trap), 3 of the spells (heal, lightning and summon imp) and the required Ritual in the last level. That meant that > 75% of the available buffs were unnecessary!
The voice overs were often repeated with machinegun regularity and i wished for a way to turn them off.

It is a lovely game (plagued by stuttering) and i hope the devs can change its course back to what they were clearly aiming for.
At the moment i cannot possibly recommend it either for old DK players or new players.

I've written two reviews, one bad over the bugs and glitches, after a few days when they fixed many bugs I deleted that and wrote a good one. I removed them both for this one.

I am completely and utterly enraged by how the story develops and ends and even if there will be a DLC to twist the plot somehow, this is utterly inexcusable.
This of course is accompanied by my struggle (yes, struggle) against the game-breaking bugs, memory leaks, crashes, freezes, save-corruption and many others.

SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT

Right, so by mission 10 or 11 you are starting to realize that the disembodied voice is not your helper, but rather your master, as opposed to being a tyrant, you're just an executive clerk doing whatever your strong and powerful masturr is telling you to do.

This is reflected by the fact he repeatedly tells jokes "If your minions ask for your superior, tell them I'm taking a nap.", by the fact he apparently "controls the aether" hence controls you, by Mira saying you're his tool and by him calling you "My Underlord", as if a pawn of his. And, by mission 13's outro, which will be elaborated further next. Unlike the intro video sequence where you might mistake to think he found your presence and revived it, he is in fact your master.

Alright, that is a bit crappy - but not story-breaking for me.

Oh, but then comes mission 13. The final mission. You besiege and break through the last hero compound in order to butcher the emperor himself. Pretty neat mission, 3-4 optional objectives - a bit of a droll but wrapping things up knowing the world is pretty much doomed by your hand and will be ripe for the taking by you makes it worthwhile.

You breach the inner chamber, kill off the emperor's guards and the emperor, but then MAJIQ! his corpse disappears and then proceeding sequence loads you into your home realm, your main core, where the wretched scum just pops out of nowhere while that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Mendechaus (w/e his name) says how he found a new pawn and how you're no longer of use to him and that sort of generic crap, then you die.

tl;dr Game over.
No conquest, no "cliffhanger" for an upcoming campaign in the overworld, no outro depicting how terror and misery have struck the goodlies. Not even a chance to fight. Just sit there and watch how the pompous ♥♥♥♥♥ just kills you and tyvm for playing. How your campaign ends with a defeaning silence of helplessness. That's the antithesis of being a Dungeon Keeper/Underlord.

I've fought against game-breaking bugs, I've triumphed terribly long loading-screens and save-destroying bugs (wall tiles changing nonstop causing FPS to drop to 5 on a mission vs 3 enemy Underlords)... This is the last straw. This game has the mechanics of its spiritual father, Dungeon Keeper, but not the essence. Maybe multiplayer fans will rejoice in this, but in that case, GL waiting a couple of months until that function will be released properly.

I've uninstalled this game and hopefully this review will be noticed so other people won't feel cheated like I do.

edit: spelling

War for the Overworld serves as the spiritual successor to Bullfrog's old classic Dungeon Keeper 2. It features plenty of the relic's features, while introducing plenty of new ones to keep it fresh and interesting.

However, the game do not feel complete. It spent plenty of time in Early Access in a beta phase, letting people play and help the developers find bugs and issues. Between the crashes, lag spikes, odd resolution choices (like no 1280x720 for example) and memory leaks, War for the Overworld could have used a few more months in the Early Access cooker to iron out some more issues.

All in all, in the state that game currently is in, I am not going to recommend this game.
Sorry, Subterrainean Games, but if you raise an old DK2 veterans hopes and end up releasing a bug riddled mess as a "finished game", you are going to end up with negative feedback.

Caling this game finished should be a crime. Im shocked that steam let them go from beta. This game is redicolously unfinished, and i would suggest to everyone who isn't as patient as ghandi to stay away from this.

Genre - Fantasy Dungeon Management/RTS

I played the original 'Dungeon Keeper' and add on pack to the end back in the day, enjoying them greatly. I bought a game called 'Dungeons' on Steam a few years ago and was dissappointed. It played more like 'the Sims - Dungeon Keeper'.

When I saw this game was out and saw a high proportion of negative reviews I had low expectations. However, with a 10% discount and free DLC and some positive reviews I gave them my money and booted it up, with fingers crossed. Oh I am so glad I did!

This is the Dungeon Keeper clone we have been waiting for. It stays true to the original game whilst adding enough new stuff to keep it fresh. Also this is just an early build with active work taking place, but it still plays great. The game mechanics work here and I didn't realise how important the RTS element was, making the game more competitive and challenging. True you don't really design a dungeon for adventurers to explore (Sword Coast: Legends will allow you to do this I am sure).

You are basically an evil master who encourages minions and sets the hordes against your foes, sometimes stubborn Dwarves and other times your similar skilled brethren. The game plays at a fast enough pace so you don't get bored. I have already gone back to previous campaign missions to chase missing achievements as they are all so much fun. I still have the final two campaign levels to go, and am looking forward to my free DLC

If you are a retro gamer who enjoyed Dungeon Keeper you should like this game; if you are into Fantasy and RTS games you will enjoy this game and if you are both you will LOVE this game!

These are really good developers who are caring people who love this game. I've read their posts on why the game was in such disarray on release and they were very candid and honest; something you don't see in many developers such as the Elite: Dangerous people or Godus idiots.

Anyway, I recommend this game because they really put their hearts and souls into this game and I know in a month after this review, it will be the game they wanted it to be.

Give good developers a chance. Punish bad ones, like Frontier aka Elite: Dangerous.

Have supported this game since early access, and its amazing how far its come.

Pros:

> A true spiritual successor to the dungeon management games of yore
> Interesting rooms and features totally unique to this game add a ton of complexity.
> Skill tree progression is really good.
> Plenty of unique minions!
> Lovely graphics
> Developers are incredibly open, honest and dedicated
> A ton of updates since launch

Cons:

> Needs a few more weeks in the cooking pot before it can be considered a finished game, with multiplayer and skirmish features working properly. However, the developers are actively addressing issues and personally I'd rather see the game release not quite finished than get cancelled due to lack of funding.
> The posession system needs a lot of work right now, hope that this is addressed down the line.

It's finally been released and it's still a bit buggy and is missing some of the content promised however they are working on it and have been patching it repeatedly since it came out. The game works better than some AAA titles do this soon after launch and I for one am glad they released it in a working if not perfect state rather than delaying it more for multiplayer.

I have to say that I wonder about the people not enjoying this game. I just finished playing through the campaign and I only ran into one "bug" the whole time (would requiring spoiling to explain). That record is _FAR_ better than what I experienced with DKII. This game has all of the style of DKII that I was expecting and it has far more units, rooms, spells, and other creative features. The game is not just a "good" spiritual successor, IMO it is better than the original.

There is a lot that needs to be finished, but this game is kickass! If you were a fan of DK and DK2 and wanted more, here ya go. No more having to run countless fanmade patches on DK2 in order to play this beloved game.

I have tried really hard to love this game at when I was able to play it I sorta enjoyed it, when it worked... The game has been released however is definately not finished and game ruining bugs are EVERYWHERE. I found myself constantly re-starting the game in an attempt to get round the campaign not working however sometimes the level had to be restarted and my load ignored.

The latest patch 16/04/2015 has rendered the game unplayable with the game crashing and closing when the main menu appears.

I am sure that these problems will be fixed however for now I would advise that you hold onto your money and wait for the game to be completed!

This game can be incredibly fun if you can endure some annoying bugs. If you are able to do that as I have then you should be in fine condition for this game. Thus far I have had plenty of fun. Of course there are some problem with the game and some things that bug the hell out of me but whatever. I still enjoyed it, except for the last mission. That mission sucked donkey balls and I condemn whoever came up with that weak ♥♥♥ cop out finish. IF YOU CAN'T STAND GAME BREAKING BUGS OR REALLY ANNOYING MINIONS THEN DO NOT BUY CURRENTLY. Other than that I'd say it was a good game.
For now I am going to put this as a non recommended review until the game has been sorted out.

I want to love this game since I loved the Dungeon Keeper series, but I just can't right now. Even with several updates and some patches the game in more resource intensive than much higher end/graphics intensive games. I mean when the mouse cursor can't even be in real time there are MAJOR issues. The game used to crash a lot, now it seems it gets so slow it might as well be crashed. Sometimes I have to wait a minute to move the camera view or accurately click on a block. So until I can play with game reasonably I without a posative review. By the way, I have a new Dell XPS with an i7 processor, 16G of RAM, and a good laptop grade Nvidia chipset that isn't running anything else in the background. I have played games with much higher end graphics with other applications running in the background without an issue numerous times, even games with large numbers of active ai units (RTS games). I feel like the game was release WAY before it should have been, there are major issues. PLEASE FIX THIS GAME! I must love this game.

The game is not finished. There are many game-breaking bugs. Game crashes at the 3-minute mark on the beast level (Level 3 on the campaign). Less than 1 hour of playable content for $30. Bottom line: Do not buy.

While War for the Overworld does a GREAT job in giving that nostalgic feeling of dungeon ke....I mean a dungeon game it is FAR from finished and should not be out of beta yet and here's why:
- Basic assets are missing, 25-50% of monsterportraits show some form of "info missing" message meaning either poor packaging of assets or nonexistance
- Wall'Hack' : minions, mainly monsters often glitch through doors and portcullises
- Memory loss: this might just me my lowgrade pc, but some missions literally slowed down to 1 frame per several seconds
- worker glitching: Regularly workers glitch in and out of objects placed and built indefinitely
- Campaign missions have timers etc. but despite this still wave enemies in during wait times
- The crypt mission bugged out so the necromancers stopped summoning corpses after defeating the big healer boss
- If you have more minion types than your bar supports? bad luck brian, because thats all you'll see for direct controll
- During mission 2 the helper says to place something so your workers dont run into the enemy camps, I still havent found out what since theres nothing on the HUD for that
- Skirmish bots so far just die randomly. When I view their dungeon heart for example they die.

What I missed:
- label things with hotkeys so not everything has to be moused and label them so when you mouse-over you see the hotkey bound to it, really miss that feature.
- Stats or anything describing the monster types to me in close up.
- a sence of management issues like hungry or grumpy minions etc. They always seem content.
- better timing of events in missions, while they seem fun if done right, most missions are either an unclear race or a slow grind.
- no real use for alot of the spells and rituals etc. because the mana is simply better spent on healing and lighting most of the time

What i Loved;
Dont get me wrong they are definately in the right direction
- Kewl new monsters taking new roles while giving all the old roles their new counterpart for us nostalgia freaks
- Good amount of chambers and monster types
- Good narration and feel
- Lovely soundeffects and ambiance

I hope they work at it some more so they can polish my issues away. If so I might re-review, untill then I'd say don't buy it, unless you want to support the folks making this seeing its indie and all that.

For those who loved Dungeon Keeper, this game is for you. There are a few bugs to be worked out... and I believe the game probably should have stayed in Beta for a few months longer to work them out. It's small things really, information about units/tiles which isn't fully there, no capability for more than 2+ opponents in multiplayer/skirmish and the odd random crash due to things I'm not even sure of. These however are being worked on by the Dev's from what I can read.

But the game itself is still pretty good regardless of all that I've mentioned. A plethora of minions, the voice over/game tutor with attitude, the spells and good use of the Unity engine presents the game in a very graphically pleasing way. It's a very worthy spiritual successor to Dungeon Keeper that's for sure... and if like myself you still have a bad taste in your mouth from EA's attempt to milk money from the name, this should help wash it away.

I'd be lying though if I would call this a "complete game". As I said earlier, it probably could've done with staying in Beta a little while longer and I have a feeling you'll feel the same if you buy this game now. That being said I would still recommend it, it is very deserving of your money, but be prepared to ignore a few incomplete aspects of the game.

I really really really want to like this game. When it works, it's fun and provides the DK style of gameplay. The problem is the game just doesn't work. Worker AI is consistently broken, they ignore the blockers and run where ever they want. There's no real good way to direct their priorities. In cases where you have to build defenses in order to survive this is critical.

Oh and then there are the crashes. Crash to desktop, the UI disappears, the game is unresponsive. I've literally tried 5 times to play the same level, and had crashes every single one. At this point I'm done, and I'll wait for them to fix the game.

Wait, for the love of god, wait with picking this game up.

I have had my eyes on this game for a long time, since I loved the original DK games, and this one seems like it was going to stay true to the formula. I did, however, want to wait until it was finished, as to not get my view on it damaged by playing an unfinished product. I was glad when I saw it on the recently released list, because I had been waiting for it for a while.

However, this game is very clearly not finished. There are placeholder texts everywhere, there's missing animations, and the UI feels clunky, sluggish, and at times unresponsive.
The foundations for a good game are clearly here, but it should not have been pushed out of the door this early. It's very much still an Early Access game.

So please, if you want to have a good experience with this game, wait until the game is actually, properly, finished. I cannot recommend it in its current state.

Game itself is VERY fun. Dungeon Keeper 2.0(less of a dark theme though, voice overs are good but a bit goofball humor)

Initially there were alot of bugs/glitches but the developers have been releasing patches EVERY 2-3 hours, amazing, 7-8 patches so far

+++++++++++++ support these guys, bug fixing at midnight on a saturday and releasing a patch. This is how game companies should behave (SUPPORT YOUR PRODUCTS!!!!!)
