Patch 1.1 now available on PublicTesting Branch!

Hey Folks,

Patch 1.1 is now available on the Public Test Branch which you are now able to opt into to download the very latest non-stable patches from steam. We've made every effort to ensure that it's as bug free as possible but we are aware of some outstanding issues.

Click here to read the full patch notes.

Now without further adieu I'm sure you're interested to find out how you can get access to the PTB, read on!

War for the Overworld Public Test Branch

What is the Public Test Branch?
The Public Test Branch is a optional branch for War for the Overworld on steam where you can download the very latest Public Test Builds of an upcoming patch. These versions will likely contain more bugs than the final release but will be available sooner than their final counterparts.

Opting into the PTB will give you the opportunity to play with the latest changes we've made to the game if you're willing to take a few bugs head on. When participating in a test build you'll be able to report bugs directly to us and help ensure that the final release is as bug-free as possible.

How to Opt-In

To Opt-in to the WFTO PTB follow these steps:
  1. Right click on War for the Overworld in your Steam Library and select properties
  2. In the properties window select the "Betas" tab
  3. Select "PublicTestBranch" from the List of Betas
  4. Close the properties
  5. War for the Overworld should now update, if it does not, open the properties window again and this time select "Verify integrity of steam cache" this will force a file check
  6. Once the download is complete and you have launched the game you should see "Patch 1.1 PTB" as the version String.

How to Opt-out

When the final version goes live to steam you will need to opt-out of the PTB to download the final version.

To Opt-out of the WFTO PTB follow these steps:

  1. Right click on War for the Overworld in your Steam Library and select properties
  2. In the properties window select the "Betas" tab
  3. Select "None - Opt out of Betas" from the List of Betas
  4. Close the properties
  5. War for the Overworld should now update, if it does not, open the properties window again and this time select "Verify integrity of steam cache" this will force a file check

Reporting Bugs
As the PTB will be on the very bleeding edge of WFTO's development when it's active you may encounter some bugs we've yet to root out during the QA Process. If you encounter any bugs we'd love it if you could help us nail them down by simply posting a quick bug report in our PTB Bug Report forums.

To best ensure we can address the issue as soon as possible please be sure to follow the bug reporting guidelines we've laid out for bug reports!

We'll be attempting to patch the PTB regularly with updates that will be fixing reported bugs so please keep us posted.

Cheers all and we hope that you enjoy playing our latest updates on the PTB!

Future Updates & Underlord Edition (Click for More)

War for the Overworld is in a state of constant evolution. For the team here at Subterranean Games, this project is a labour of love, and we still feel there is plenty of room to expand the game. With this in mind, we’ll be continuing to patch War for the Overworld for many months to come.

Alongside regular bug fixes and feature improvements, you can also expect to see new content introduced to the game, in the form of both Free Updates and Paid DLC. The world of Kairos has plenty of room for expansion and we can’t wait to explore more of the story.

Planned features include:

  • Survival Mode
  • Basic Map Editor (Which we can improve later!)
  • Spin-off campaign stories
  • And more!

The first Paid DLC will be a short campaign that supplements the story of the original campaign. This DLC will be released later this year and will be free to everyone who purchased the game before the 2nd of May 2015.

Survival Mode

Survival mode will be receiving some improvements with some truly fleshed out features. This DLC will be completely free to everyone, regardless of when you purchase the game and will be released later this year.

Survival Mode will feature:

  • Survival Challenges - Compete against pre-set challenges, or create your own and share them with your friends!
  • Leaderboards - Prove you are the greatest Underlord of our time and climb to the top of the Leaderboards!
  • More Levels - More Survival Levels for you to try your evil hand at!
  • Mutators - Change up the game to make it harder, easier, to just plain weirder through a number of pre-set mutators and even design your own!

Underlord Edition

Purchase the Underlord Edition to receive these additional features:

Sovereign Dungeon Theme

In War for the Overworld, each and every Underlord is their own unique being. A dungeon is a direct reflection of an Underlord’s presence and individuality.

By purchasing the Underlord Edition, you can don the Sovereign Dungeon Theme in Multiplayer and Skirmish to demonstrate your dedication to evil!

The Sovereign Theme contains unique models and textures for:

  • Dungeon Core including unique VFX and SFX
  • Walls and Tiles
  • Tile and Door Toppers
  • Workers

Soundtrack Download

We’ve assembled the complete collection of all 16 music tracks used in the game. All of which can be yours to listen to in the comfort of your own Underground Lair or Torture Chamber.

The Dungeoneer’s Guide to the Underworld (When Complete)

There’s still more to come for the Underlord Edition, we’re working on compiling a collection of our concept art with some snippets of lore for you in our “Dungeoneer’s Guide to the Underworld”, which will help give you a small insight into the realm of Kairos.

Tired of invading dungeons? It's time you build your own!

Do you feel you are in a slump? Monotonously disemboweling evil guys in endless quests for gold and a slightly better pair of boots? You are starting to wonder... are heroics really your calling? Welcome to the War for the Overworld!

War for the Overworld is a Dungeon Management Game that employs your favourite aspects of the RTS and God Game genres. You play an all-powerful, malevolent Underlord, long banished to the Aether. With unrivaled dark power and an insatiable desire for bloody conquest, you will arise once more, and reclaim your realm!

In your absence, the Underworld lost its way. It became feeble and afraid of the Empire of the Overworld, which grew strong and boldly comfortable in its quiet retirement from evil-slaying. Carve out your dungeon from the soil and stones of the Underworld, and build dozens of unique rooms to attract a myriad of creatures to your halls to work and fight for you.

In addition to your faithful followers, you have destructive spells and powerful rituals to cast upon any unsuspecting goodly Hero (or rival Underlord) who dares to breach your unhallowed halls. With your unmatched dark powers and mighty army of bloodthirsty minions, you are ready for your War for the Overworld!

Key Features

  • Build Your Dungeon - Excavate and build your dungeon beneath the earth of the Overworld. Design it’s layout as you see fit, creating an underground fortress filled with a wide variety of rooms, each with a unique use and purpose.

  • Evil Is Back - Play as an Underlord who has awakened from a deep slumber after countless years drifting in the Aether. This realm hosts a variety of enemies — both Heroes and Underlords will stand in your path as you fight for dominance of the Overworld

  • Veins of Evil - Choose from over 60 rooms, spells, potions, rituals, defenses and constructs in the Veins of Evil as you progress through the game. There are a plethora of possible Vein combinations you can use to conquer the Overworld. Create your own unique flavour of evil!

  • Fortify Your Domain - Build a wide variety of defenses within your walls to defend against — and destroy — those who seek to invade your domain.

  • Cast Wicked Spells - Call down unholy magic to strengthen your dungeon, route enemy forces, flood corridors with Micropiglets, or simply turn a meddlesome Hero into a geyser of giblets.

  • Unleash Devastating Rituals - Punish your foes or empower your own forces with game-changing Rituals that can do anything from raising an undead army, to instantly fortifying your entire dungeon.

  • Command Powerful Minions - Over 20 minions await your call, and will gladly work and fight under your banner... if you provide them with all the creature comforts they demand.

  • Conquer the Overworld - Play through a feature-length campaign, facing off against the Emperor of the Overworld as you fight for complete supremacy inthe Realm of Kairos

  • Destroy your Rivals - Take the fight to your rival Underlords in Skirmish or Multiplayer matches! (four player support coming soon!)

  • Test your Mettle - Run the gauntlet of the prototype Survival mode and see if you can top the high score against waves of enemies!

TLDR: It isn't ready. It feels like it still in early access or in early beta. Needs to be patched and updated for a more polished product before I can recommend this for purchase.

While I have played the game for a few hours now (only the campaign mode), I can say I am not sure what I have played. The UI just feels like a mess to sort through and the mouse button feels floaty and out of place. Missing text or substitute names (like "Prop: Tree 101"...not a direct example) for most objects in the game. AI seems to be functional is some places and missing in others. Goblin workers run in place sometimes, priorities of what you want the workers to do seems random, and even most minions (to include the NPC enemy's units) can walk on liquid surfaces like Jesus. Now there are some creatures that can bypass liquid areas with float/fly and that makes sense, but I don't think a dwarf or soldier in heavy armor has the ability to do that.

There seems to be alot of information missing for the player as well. The tutorial will say certain rooms to need to be 3x3 or etc to function, but never show or remind you later when hovering over a room to build. More lack of information comes from how much food or gold is needed for their upkeep. It also doesn't tell how many units your dungeon can hold or build or even how long it takes to build said units. For instance, I built 100,000 gold worth of room called Beast Den. It does not require much space and I built it above recommended specs. In terms 100,000 gold for one room is quite a lot, but I am not what benefit, if any at all, that gave me. (To note I did build the structure over multiple areas, but still above recommended specs in each place). It seemed the creatures didn't become more powerful or spawn more frequently. They would just spawn a guy every minute or so and thats all I could really tell you. Even if I spent a more reasonable 5000-7500 gold, it seemed it was the same spawn rate and same amount of creatures given. It just doesn't make sense to me...and that is the common theme in the game.

Nothing makes sense there is such a lack of communication of information from the game to the player. And when the game tries to relay information it seems to be done poorly. Nothing about this title suggests to me its polished or ready to sell as is.

I remember launch being a month ago and I waited for patches and etc. The same bugs and lack of polish can still be found today.

For all those applauding this game for being a great example for how early access games should be released, I think you should do a double take and remove your rose tinted glasses for a new Dungeon Keeper title.

The game isn't ready for sale and needs more polish. It is a shame that they released it in such a poor state as I haven't covered the still missing features like skirmish mode. I hope this doesn't turn out to be another cash grab early access game where development is abandoned later.

What comes in this $30 "full release" game
  • A 13 level campaign
  • 3 1v1 skirmish maps
  • Functional AI's
  • Unfinished multiplayer
  • Poorly optimized graphics and interface
    • It takes half a second between when I move my mouse and when the mouse cursor in game moves on even the lowest graphics settings
    • Inconsistent frame rate.
  • A long list of promised future content which gets shorter every time I check it.
Not worth $30.00 in its current state and released far too soon. Consider buying it in the future when it can justify being a full release game.

Despite looking forward to this game for months and truly enjoying this genre of games
i was most disapointed with the end result.
the game was too short and very easily beaten with very little tactics needed
simply defend build up and charge.
very little strategy needed with the variety of play very limited
what promised to be a very fun and engaging game alas didnt deliver any where near its potential.

a real shame as i was so looking forward to this release.
maybe multiplayer will help it out can but wait and see.

While this is a better spiritual successor to the Dungeon Keeper series than it's competition, it's still launched in an inacceptable state. Just because we're in a time where it's possible to patch after launch, it doesn't mean it's fine to launch a game full of filler text, rampant bugs and incomplete content with the excuse that they're patching constantly. To add salt to the wound, I bought the upgrade only to find out absolutely nothing of the upgrade has been implemented yet.

Regardless of how good the games Subterranean Games creates are months after release, I'd think long and hard before purchasing anything from them in the future.

This game harks back to the good old Bullfrog days for those who can remember as far back as Theme Park and Theme Hospital to name but 2 titles from said alas former software house. While there are plenty of familiar voices and creatures for those who, like me, loved the original DK1 and DK2 games this game owes its existence to, there are also a lot of new elements and creatures to keep even the most hardened of dungeoneers on their toes (or fingers?) It’s basically a VERY long awaited DK3 so think original DK with much better graphics and a few different enemies and creatures and your pretty much there. Good stuff!

Really fun! I didn't really play the original dungeon keeper games, I think I was too young to appreciate them, but I really enjoy this a lot! It does indeed seem like it should still be early access, there are plenty of bugs and the tooltips don't really explain what everything does.

The campaign does slowly introduce you to new features and mechanics, but if you stop playing for a while, then go back to it and forget, you are left to Google how everything works because not every thing is intuitive and there's nothing to help you in game.

This is more of a 'god' type RTS (like Black & White) where you don't have to micromanage every little thing your units do. Just provide them with what they need, give them basic orders from time to time and they are kind of self sustaining. My kind of RTS! :)

So far, this game is mostly what I hoped it would be. I waited until the bumpy release to buy it, and so far, I haven't run into any bugs other than an occassional spike in lag when I use the ritual which reveals the whole map at once for ten seconds.
The art is mostly pleasing, though I tend to like how the hero faction's theme was designed more than the standard Underlord theme. The game so far does a good job at introducing you to key concepts without making the tutorial seem dull, even for an RTS/Dungeon Keeper 1/2 player like me. The campaign can be challenging at times, but a little easy at others. As of now, there are few skirmish maps, but there will be a patch soon that will supposedly add quite a number of maps, which has me pleased. The best thing, though, would be to release a map editor to conjoin with the steam workshop or something so that the game makers can allow the community to create their own maps.
For personal tastes, I like and have a hard time accepting this game at times. I like how diverse you can make your forces on the campaign, but limiting things in skirmish maps based on technology (Sin) trees seems silly in the sense that if I play long enough, I'd like to have access to everything available, rather than be limited in what I can do longterm. Along with that, I have a problem with the types of available creatures in the game- nothing seems to be like an "end-game" level creature other than the super-creatures, which you can't upgrade or train at all, and you can only ever get one. While I LOVE the hero units because I like the idea of having my own super minion, I'd like for the "1" on their HP flower to be a non-number icon, or to allow the supers to level to 10. This would clear up confusion like how I had when I spent a massive amount of time on XP potions in an attempt to level up my Eternal minion. Continuing on this creature-focused section, I think there should be more "high-end" creatures. Right now, the best creatures at the further points of the Sin tree are mostly casters or support-type creatures. The exception to this are the Shadow/Bafu, which in all honesty are not THAT beefy (I'm thinking Black Knights from DK2), and are difficult to train since the Beastmasters can't train the creatures as quickly as some of your intelligent minions can train. To be fair, though, it seems that the beast talent path is designed for aggro strategies, which means their high-end units won't be that incredible. The neutral tree basically only offers casters, which are all nice to have at times, but they don't offer a real frontline other than with the horde of ghouls your Necromancers can build up over time. That being said, the necromancers themselves are incredibly vulnerable to well-placed lightning strikes from your opponents, which can make all of the hard work from your ghoul farming go to waste in a matter of seconds. The defense tree offer the Augre, which is as close to a true tank of a non-super minion. Even so, they are not exactly what I was hoping for. What I hope for in the future, is an addition of the variety of creatures in both theme and purpose. Right now it seems that the main design of the creatures is "beast/beast humanoid," with a couple of demons and a human and a couple of undead for spice. While I love the addition of the beasts and all, it would be great to have more "dark humans," demons, and undead to accompany the beasts abd beast-men.

-Keeps the Spirit of DK2 gameplay
-Campaign has good pace for the most part
-Few Bugs now
-Gameplay is mostly fun

-Rocky release
-Lag when using a very specific ritual
-Lag if you keep the game runing on the main menu for too long (occasionally)
-No map editor

Would be cons if they weren't being fixed:
-Low amount of Skirmish Maps (adding more soon)
-Bugs in Survival Mode (fixing soon)

Personal Preference Stuff:
-Creature diversity seems to be off (Too many beastial types and not enough demons/humans/undead/other)
-Narrator sounded better as a snide aide/friend (DK2) as opposed to an arrogant, omniscient demon god
-The narrator can be hilarious at times
-The voice acting on the enemy dungeon lords is very good at times
-The graphics are pleasing

I have to say I am very pleased with the evolution of this game. Being a huge fan of The bullfrog's Dungeon Keeper series led me to purchase WFTO. Knowing that this game was unfinished when I bought it led me to have some early reservations as I have been burned before on other unfinished games. But the crew that developed this game has been extremely professional and has an ear to the ground for consumer complaints. They have been very good at fixing and polishing their product which I have to say is a breath of fresh air in an industry that has turned from making great games to churning out substandard content in order to make money and decrease risks. I hope they continue on the path they are on and look forward to seeing what they come up with in the future. I believe that this game is one of the best in its genre which is saying a lot seeing as these type of games are dying out. Big name developers watch out for these guys. They are doing it right, and they didn't charge an arm and a leg to do it.

It does indeed need a few updates to bring all the features it promised into the game. However the game in its current state plays well, and is a great successor to the Dungeon Keeper series. I would recommend this game to anyone who loves Dungeon Keeper, and to not let its current unpolished state keep you away

I REALLY wish I could recommend this one, but I simply can't. It's unfinished, buggy, poorly optimized, and the mechanics are opaque at best.

The content, as it is, is water thin at the moment with a thirteen level campaign against a ♥♥♥♥ easy AI and three 1v1 AI skirmish maps. Patches were promised, but they have yet to manifest themselves. The bugs are also still pretty bad. I am currently stuck on level nine because the game consistently crashes when I'm roughly halfway through with the mission.

Worst of all, the game lacks the sort of interesting interactions and special units that made Dungeon Keeper so intriguing. Building oddly shaped or larger than usual rooms bring no additional benefits. You'll never have a super cultist or unique monster appear in your dungeon. Furthermore, the inclusion of a so-called tech tree is haphazard at best. Since the tree doesn't really chain and basic rooms require sins to unlock, it doesn't enhance the game so much as slow down a dungeon's expansion.

There's a lot of potential here, but I feel like the game launched at least three months too soon. Save your money, people.

- Minions ignore commands.
- Minions get stuck and just stand there.
- Sounds come and go.
- Walls are meaningless.
- Spells are missing or broken.
- Bugs steal precious time away from timed achievements.
- Minion AI pathing is almost always the in wrong direction.
- Increasingly choppy/stuttered/lagged the more you play. Requires restarting the game often.
- Just rush the objective to win most of the time. No strategy involved whatsoever.
- Bugs bugs bugs.

Hideous disappointment! The only thing in this game I would compare to DK, is the idea. This is yet another unfinished game pretending to be a release.

What happens when someone has a great idea but is unable or unwilling to actually follow through with it. Disappointing with poor controls, glitches, and ui which looks like it was made by one of the little mooks you control in game. Really hope they work on this more...

War for the Overworld.
그렇다면 불프로그의 후속 작으로 어떤 게임이 리메이크 될까요?
매직 카펫? Gene Wars? Hi Octane?

Wait, for the love of god, wait with picking this game up.

I have had my eyes on this game for a long time, since I loved the original DK games, and this one seems like it was going to stay true to the formula. I did, however, want to wait until it was finished, as to not get my view on it damaged by playing an unfinished product. I was glad when I saw it on the recently released list, because I had been waiting for it for a while.

However, this game is very clearly not finished. There are placeholder texts everywhere, there's missing animations, and the UI feels clunky, sluggish, and at times unresponsive.
The foundations for a good game are clearly here, but it should not have been pushed out of the door this early. It's very much still an Early Access game.

So please, if you want to have a good experience with this game, wait until the game is actually, properly, finished. I cannot recommend it in its current state.

Game itself is VERY fun. Dungeon Keeper 2.0(less of a dark theme though, voice overs are good but a bit goofball humor)

Initially there were alot of bugs/glitches but the developers have been releasing patches EVERY 2-3 hours, amazing, 7-8 patches so far

+++++++++++++ support these guys, bug fixing at midnight on a saturday and releasing a patch. This is how game companies should behave (SUPPORT YOUR PRODUCTS!!!!!)
