“I completed the level and was reduced to disturbingly orgasmic cries. I haven’t felt as good with a videogame, in that direct physical way, for quite a while.”
Kieron Gillen, Rock, Paper, Shotgun
“I can't say enough good things about VVVVVV. It's Terry Cavanagh's best game to date, and one of the best platformers I've ever played. If you have any interest in challenging platformers whatsoever, you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to pick up VVVVVV.”
10/10 – Anthony Burch, Destructoid
“...it would be wrong to let the sheer fiendishness of Cavanagh’s offering overwhelm any appreciation of the ceaseless elegance of the design.”
8/10 – EDGE

This is a minimalist game with great platforming and music. In most platforming games you have the ability to jump whereas in this game whenever you press up you flip, turning the ceiling into the floor and the floor into the ceiling. The level design is very clever and you are left with a great sense of accomplishment when you get past a particularly difficult part. Even after completion this game kept me coming back to see if I could improve my high score in the Super Gravitron. Highly recommended.

This is maddening, addictive, cute, funny, twisted and...not that long of a game, but provides so much fun. I don't know when the devs updated this with full controller support but it was the one thing I had wished for since day one. Also...the music is nothin but dat 8 bit goodness.

A charming game done in the style of retro video games. It revolves around one simple mechanic: manipulating gravity to avoid various obstacles.

PROS:
-very unique gameplay that's very easy to get into
-soundtrack will give you an ♥♥♥♥♥♥ as your ears are filled with the sounds of those retro beats
-if you're into retro gaming the art style will satisfy your needs
-an excellent time killer
-lots of secrets to find
-it comes bundled with a lot of community levels if you're finished the main story

CONS:
-not a lot of replayability in the main story unless you're aiming for a few achievements
-some areas have a difficulty spike without any warning
-the game is rather short

Overall the game itself is really enjoyable. I highly recommend this to anybody who just wants a small game to play in their spare time and is looking for a good challenge.

One of the greatest platformers I have ever played.
It's hard, but fair. Virtually after each difficult section the game gives you a checkpoint to reload to after you die. I can only remember 2 sections in which I was expecting a checkpoint but there wasn't one, but the reason why is because those 2 sections were at parts in the game designed to make it difficult, so that people who showed real commitment could finish the game, and those who showed perceverance can find all of the secrets.
The game offers a unique spin on how platformers work, in that instead of a jump, the game lets you switch gravity.
It ticks all of the boxes for me that makes a greatplatformer, and really stands out in my mind as, not only one of the greatest of it's genre but one of my favourite games of all time.
1. Gameplay over graphics: For me, a platformer is about the gameplay, not fancy textures and effects. In many ways, I prefer the simplistic 2D pixelated art style for a platformer, it's simple, but effective. A charming and almost iconic thing about platformers is often their basic look, but complexity in gameplay, and this game hits the nail on the head where it counts.
2. Performance and accuracy: In a platformer, usually a few pixels is all you will be given at times to avoid certain hazards. This is why accuracy in movement is important in these kinds of games, and a higher frame rate helps drastically in both your ability to play, but also the visual appearance of the game. Which is often why platformers like these will sacrifice a level of graphics in favour of performance. In terms of accuracy however there are a few problems depending on what you're using to play. I've found using a controller, (although what I'd prefer for this type of game), often leads to your character moving significantly further than you want them to, and like I said, a few pixels of difference often results in death. But it's of no massive concern, because the keyboard controls are sound, and lead to none of these problems. Also sometimes being in fullscreen (or big windowed) can lead to the same problem at times, but it's less frequent, and honestly the game isn't that painful to play in a smaller window.
3. Unique design, style, mechanics and music (or sound in general): This game ticks all of these. It's 2D low bit graphic style, although not unique to this game, has it's own style, playing with the colours in each area not to the level that it's distracting, but enough to make it so that the game isn't a monochrome layout makes the game more cheery and vibrant. The gravity switch, although I have seen it in other games, is deffinately iconic to this game. If someone says 2D platformer with gravity switch instead of jump this is definately the first one I think of, although not the first one I've played. The style of enemies, areas, hazards, and characters is definately something you're not likely to find anywhere else. Enemies don't look very threatening, and you often ask yourself why it is that a floating stop sign is a hazard, or a fast moving OOOOOOB is an enemy to be avoided, and I don't know whether there's any hidden meaning to them, (I think it might be part of the games sense of humour, at one point you find an area called the chinese room, in which there are fast moving hazards with LIES written on them shooting through the area) but it's certainly unique and makes the game seem light hearted. This is often a big help in games of this style in making the player not rage quit and throw their computer out the nearest window into a pond. The style of the characters in this game is really simplistic as well, but enough to make them seem human, and the sound effects when they're happy whist talking, sad whilst talking, and when they die, really pull on your heart strings despite how basic they are. This adds to the character of the game immensly whilst also helping to give the player more inscentive not to die, because they would hear the sad crying of their character.
And whilst talking about things that stop the player from rage quiting, music in these kinds of games is really important. This games music is not only superb, but the devs were kind enough to keep it on a loop, so when you die it doesn't just restart over again like in so many other platformers, which really really gets annoying. Also because it's so good, I'm really glad they added a way of just playing them to listen to them in game as well. If you explore and collect "shiny things" then the game rewards you, not only with more playable modes, but also music tracks to play at your leasure, which is a further inscentive to play the game. (Sure you could just look them up on something like youtube, add them to a playlist by themselves and stick it on repeat, but where's the sense of achievement in that?)
And speaking of acheivements, this game has many. Which is always important for a platformer such as this. Completionism is rife amongst the players of these kinds of games (myself included) and there definately is a sense of achievement in all of these achievements when you get one. It's not like most other games where you just get an achievement for walking 2 steps, you actually have to work for them, and they're actually a record of your achievements like they should be.
All in all, an excelent game, and way more than worth the money you pay for it on sale.

Sure the thing is hard, but if you are an aveRAGE player you can beat it in around two hours. It also offers a lot of replayibility, with custom levels, challenges and everything.

If you are ok with platformers, this game is definitely worth the low price.
If you are a speedrunner, you beat the game a couple hundred times and you are reading the reviews just for fun.

Great 2D platformer where instead of jumping you can switch gravity. The controls are not very smooth but everything else is great. While not very long (~4h), I managed to die 1126 times (I'm a huge n00b) but it was not a problem as waypoints were very frequent and in all the right spots, and with instant loading times. Even though I googled the solution to one of the puzzles much to my shame, the puzzles are very fun. Did I mention the soundtrack? No? Well, it's awesome (if you like chiptune)!

Rating: Lovvvvvved it!

VVVVVV is an original platform game, and one of the best ones out there.
The story is simple: you take control of Captain Viridian in finding all of the members of his ship that got lost in another dimension, you'll have to explore this weird place where space can loop and bend in unpredictable ways.
You can't jump but your only ability is to reverse gravity when you're on the ground, fast and accurate gravity shifts will be needed for manouvering around moving plaftorms, disappearing platforms, spikes and big drops; the game's world in one big area divided in sections (called stages), each one of its own color, where you'll be able to find the lost members of your crew, teleporters (for moving trough the world faster), crickets (hidden collectables) and a lot of checkpoints. That's right, the game is pretty tough and in some later sections you'll have to die a lot of times, however the game is neither puniching or frustating and even if it can get really difficilty it rarely becomes too extreme or frustrating.

The presence of an in-game level editor (you can also play levels created by other users!), lots of secrets and stellar retro graphics and sountrack makes VVVVVV a must-have for any fan of retro game or generally anyone who's looking for a good plaftom-ish game.
