I'm pleased to announce that version 2.2 of VVVVVV is out today! This version adds steam achievements and fixes a number of small bugs from the previous steam version. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite Indies of all time and the one that introduced me to the scene. Everyone should have it in their library! Oh, did I mention the OST is awesome? Because yeah, it is one of the best soundtracks to grace an adventure/platformer.

NOTE: I know Steam says I have only four hours in, but I've put over 20 more into the 3DS version. So I think I'm qualified to write this review.

This game is by far the greatest platformer I have ever played. It's graphics, mechanics, music, everything is just perfect. I really like retro looking games (I know that some people don't), but if you think that pixely graphics always = a bad game, please give this a try, it will change your mind.

VVVVVV is a difficult (but not by any means impossible) platformer, with mechanics that make it stand out from the rest. You don't jump. You flip. You flip up onto the ceiling to avoid obstacles. This instantly makes this game unique.

The game starts out in your ship, when your crew suddenly realize that the ship is about to crash. Everybody uses the teleporter to get away. Once you, Captain Viridian, teleport to your random destination, nobody else is there. You then go on a quest to find the rest of your crew.

The game has the basic Zelda formula that a lot of games do, where there's an overworld and dungeons. Dungeons is kind of a misnomer for these parts of the game, "levels" would be a better word. In each level, each room is an obstacle. Your goal is to get to the end and find your crewmate.

The thing that is great about this setup is that each level introduces a new, awesome mechanic. These include gravity lines, conveyor belts, screen warping, and for one level, one large room that constantly scrolls upward. There are also "in between" levels in unknown dimensions with special obstacles that are extra difficult, where one of your crewmates has to navigate them with you. Terry Cavanagh's level design in all of these is absolutely spectacular, and some of the best I have seen in any video game ever.

If all of that wasn't great enough, the game also has 20 trinkets hidden throughout. Finding them will unlock time trial levels, and getting all of the trinkets is definitely something to brag about. Usually the trinkets are placed in either hard to find or difficult to get to places. There's the infamous "Doing Things the Hard Way" trinket that is considered by many (including myself) to be the hardest part of the game. I've beaten it several times, and one of those was just last night.

And if THAT wasn't good enough, there's also the game's soundtrack. Easily the best music in any video game ever. Magnus Pålsson, a chiptune artist from Sweden, did the soundtrack. And it's amazing. Fast paced, energetic, melodic, awesome. It's also available to buy on his website, souleye.se.

And if THAT wasn't good enough, there's also a bunch of levels created by various other people (but shorter than the main game), including some by Magnus Pålsson, the soundtrack designer (which we just talked about), and one by Notch, the creator of Minecraft.

This game has given me countless hours of fun, and while not perfect, it is incredibly close. For only five dollars, I can recommend this game to anybody who wants a good platformer. Ignore all the bad reviews. Buy this game.
