Version 1.2.0 Released

We're pleased to announce that Wrack v1.2.0 has been released! Among many other fixes/additions, this version features something you the community has demanded: an uncapped framerate! This will allow the game to be buttery smooth on monitors with a refresh rate greater than 60 Hz. If you're lucky enough to have a monitor like this, be sure to try it out!

Here's the full list of what's new:

  • The frame rate is no longer capped at 60 FPS! The frame rate can now set in the "Video Settings" menu from 30 FPS all the way up to being uncapped!
  • Added a new loading screen! This one is more colorful and fits the existing UI better.
  • Added a new finalized "Episode Summary" screen! This now has the proper interface, along with new music!
  • Applied some degree multi-threading to dynamic lights. This may optimize projectiles slightly for those with multiple CPU cores.
  • The gamepad can now be used in the menus, even if the "Enable Gamepad" setting is set to "No".
  • Removed some unused particle graphics and fixed the resolution of some other images. Hopefully this will prevent issues related to running out of memory.
  • Reduced memory usage on the game's sound effects.
  • Added a display indicating which button should be pressed to execute a finisher once they become available. This display goes away once the player has executed 3 finishers.
  • Added confirmation menus when picking Cakewalk, Hardcore, and BS! elaborating on key features of the skill settings.
  • The title screen Final Boss Entertainment logo is now displayed in a letterboxed mode if the resolution is non-16:9. The graphic has also been altered so that the logo is slightly larger.
  • Wrack now disables use of the Windows key.
  • Tweaked the position of some of the HUD elements so they don't overlap.
  • Removed a duplicate face on E1L2.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed you to use the escape key to exit out of certain menus this was supposed to be forbidden for.
  • Fixed the size of the railgunner gibs.
  • Music now fades out when returning to the title screen after a quicksave.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented main menu selection cycling when holding down the arrow keys.
Thanks everyone! Hope you enjoy it.

The game is great. It's a classic-style FPS in that it requires quick reflexes and quick planning of attacks. I bought Wrack for the gameplay but I stayed for the modding. If you've ever modded for Doom, Quake, or Unreal, you'll be quite at home with WrackEd. Even if you're a total mapping noob you can familiarize yourself with WrackEd in an afternoon.

Not quite the Doom or Quake homage it was looking like, but it is a good mix of old school shooting with arcade like gameplay elements. This should be ultimately played by anyone interested in shooting games and is one of the more skill based games to come along in a long time.

Ok, if you miss old FPS shooters like Doom or Quake, buy this game right away. The levels are exactly like Doom with a Borderlands 2 shader.
The game gets harder after the first 10 minutes, and the combo killing feature makes you run like effin' Forrest Gump with a shotgun. You'll realize you don't even have time to get a decent screenshot because you can't stop shooting.

I'm happy I bought this. Really.

Brad "Carnevil" Carney, having developed a source port named Skulltag which revolutionized Doom's multiplayer community, decided to make his very own first person shooter. Now here it is, the cartoonish, oldschool, arcade and fresh FPS called "Wrack". But, did it turn out well?

The first thing you need to know that it's a fast paced, skill based shooter with a bigger emphasis on the gameplay rather than story. If you except this to be a military(like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Medal of Honor or Titanfal), tactical(Counter Strike, Arma, Rainbow Six), story driven(Bioshock, Half Life) or puzzle based(Prey) shooter, then be informed that it's nothing like that. This is definitely closer to shooters like Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein 3D, Rise of the Triad, Serious Sam, Heretic and other oldschool, fast paced and with the only story being told is "Kill all that moves!!!" shooters. However, it's not exactly the same thing as them. Wrack aspires to be an arcade shooter, so it takes inspiration from games like Mega Man and Contra. Console platformers and PC shooters of the 90s are loved by rather different communites, so Wrack attempts to fuse both into one game that will hopefully find fans in any community.

This game has the following characteristics:
-You move very quickly and never get tired.
-There's five weapons, which are quite similar to Doom's and other shooters' ones. They don't have recoil or iron sights, here they are:
*The meele is a huge and strong sword which can kill almost every common enemy in one hit, simirarly to Shadow Warrior '97.
*The pistol is a simple weapon that fires fast and can do the job of killing things well if you run out of ammo for other weapons.
*The shotgun is a quite effective weapon useful for racking up chains(to be explained later). Its ammo is very plentiful, so this one might be your favourite.
*The 4th weapon is a Pulsar: a fast shooting energy ball gun affected by gravity. Very useful for bosses and enemy swarms.
*The last weapon in your arsenal is the Bazooka. It's a slowly firing rocket launcher, but it still is very essential. Useful for combos! If you get a certain item you can even do rocket jumps!
- Skulltag powerups are included. Doomsphere multiplies damage done by 4. Guardsphere does the opposite. Speedsphere makes you superfast.
- If you grab the Blast Guard you get the ability to do rocket jumps! Permament effect!
- Each enemy requies different strategy against it. Use your gray matter effectively!
- Theme changes every two levels.
- Music is composed by (our lord and savior!!!)Bobby Prince, and it's AWESOME!
- There's a Boss fight on every odd numbered level(other than the final one). But let me tell you that they are definitely Mega Man inspired, so if you only played FPSes before, you'll poop your diaper. The bosses are NOT some lame-♥♥♥ circle strafing(Cyberdemon, ROTT95 bosses, Kukulkan), hiding behing walls and shooting(Spider Mastermind, Wolfenstein 3D bosses, Exotech Larvae), endless enemy swarms and no actual attacks(Icon of Sin, Shub ♥♥♥♥urath, Mordekai), quick-time-events(MMS bosses), keep running away and shooting(Blood and Daikatana bosses) or swarming the player with projectiles ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Hell no! This time you MAY NOT quicksave after each attack or any BS like that, no! You will need to learn their attack patterns and then learn how to evade them, just like in Mega Man. ROTT13 tried to do a similar thing, but the failed at it with having too many damn projectiles than you can't even ♥♥♥♥ing evade. Wrack does this job very well and is one of the very few to do so.
-There's a chain\combo system. If you kill enemies in a certain time period, you'll rack up your chain. If you kill multiple enemies at the same time, you get a combo. Racking up chain's fills your finisher bar, which let's you do strong attacks.
- There's 8 levels+ a secret one. That may not be many, but there is a lot of replay value! You can always struggle to get a high score in the online leaderboards, or get those annoying achievemnts, or try to find these freaking secrets.
- Quicksaves disappear when loaded on higher difficulties. It's an arcade shooter, so you are supposed to fight your way to survive and get extra lives to reach the end, not save everytime you clear an area. You are supposed to sweat and breathe densily when you have little lives left and trying to find out the way to kill the boss or get through a tricky part on a level. This is how NES owners often felt like. FPS veterans mat not like it, but screw them! Quicksaving scums! Play Wrack if you are manly! No offense of course =).
- Workshop support for mods and new levels! That can bring endless life to this title!
- The plot and characters are good and supposed to make you feel like watching a Saturday morning cartoon.
- IT'S NOT A ♥♥♥♥ING DOOM CLONE!
- THE GRAPHICS ARE NOT RIPPED OFF BORDERLANDS! lol bl doesn't even have celshading

In other words, Carn did a great job with making this game, so I defenitely recommend it. It's a fun, retrotastic and challenging experience. I urge YOU and everyone of your friends to play it!

An exceptionally slick example of a modern FPS that has been heavily influenced by the shooter of yester year.

There's a level editor included with full steam workshop support that seems to have a strong community behind it delivering fresh content.
The game runs beautifully, and the cell-shading visuals look great.

My only gripe is the music can be a tad repetitive and as of writing, there is no multiplayer component. (Other than leaderboards for time attack and score attack modes.)
A game like this seems screams out for some old school deathmatch flavourings.

A great buy for the Doom/Quake fans looking for something that will work well on a newer machine.

I feel like Wrack is a perfect tribute to what PC gaming was in the mid 90's. It has all the necessary ingredients:

* Fun
* Fast
* Difficult
* Replay Value
* Gameplay Depth

I would recommend getting this game for one of your younger siblings / cousins / friends who are curious as to what real FPS games were like before the triple AAA titles from Activision / EA dumbed down the genre.

In essence its a top notch FPS game that does everything right. I have thoroughly enjoyed it thus far. Easily 10/10

Note: I have some of the devs in my steam friendlist, so perhaps I will be too kind to the game. ( ALSO LOOK AT OTHER OPINIONS! )

Wrack is a cel-shaded first person shooter. The gameplay feels like the old shooters Doom and Quake. While playing, I felt like I was traveling back in time to those games, The game really is oldschool fun. The gameplay is clearing rooms of enemies, turning on buttons and encountering endbosses. While playing you learn the rhythm of the enemies, which adds to the fun because you know how to react to every enemy. By killing enemies in a short amount of time, you start filling your combometer. When the meter is very high you can perform a special attack, which does a lot of damage and gives you a lot of score. This is really addicting because you want to get your combo as high as you can. The game levels are well designed with a lot of secrets. I mostly like how the levels look, the graphical style of the walls are really colourful, thanks to the lighting. The only thing that give me mixed feelings are the endbosses, because many weren't well designed. Some endbosses are blood pumping exciting, while others were easily done with one finger in the nose. I mostly hated the final endboss, because I played the game on the hardest difficulty on my first playthrough. Due to that I couldn't quicksave and if I lost all my lives I had to start the level all over again. This really irritated me, because after retrying the final level over and over again, I didn't want to continue playing the game. It felt like a waste of time. The story of the game is pretty entertaining, because of the cliches. But it is more for the background because gameplay is king. But that still doesn't make up for the fact that the cutscenes in the game are really badly done. They look like they are unfinished. After the singleplayer you can play the speedrun and scoreattack modes. I will not be playing those as I will probably go insane! You also unlock a secret level which adds for around 1 hour extra gameplay! As final thing I want to say that I think this game is really well polished, with (almost) no bugs and still gets well supported by the devs.

Workshop:
For the workshop I can say it gets good support from a small community. Their levels can add for many extra hours of fun. The dev themselves have uploaded video tutorials to help people who are interested to making some mods for Wrack.

In short:
Real oldschool fps fun.

The game is now out of early access and is for sure one of my favourite games for this year, everything is smooth and just feels right, from blasting your foes to wrack (heh) up a combo too running and jumping your way over floors of acid and lava. The new look for some of the weapons is a welcome and the game as a whole just has a great new feeling to it. Most importantly however is that the soundtrack is done by Bobby Prince and really gives it that feeling of old school shooters. The game has come a long way and it has gone above and beyond what I expected it to be original. Anyone who is a fan of games such as Duke Nukem 3D, Quake or Doom this is a must have!

Wasn't to big of a fan when I first got it like a year ago or so. Didn't feel like a complete old-school game. But I went to Quakecon and saw it being played there. And then realized that this game has changed from the last I touched it. Boom reinstall and I gotta say. It's changed a lot! music sounds better and everything feels better. The level design and speed adds to the adrenaline rush including the music! Feels and sounds like DOOM! but in a cel-shaded world and I personally love it! I never liked Borderlands either. So when I play this I know it feels good knowing that other games using the cel-shaded technique can do good. If this game were to remind me of anything remotely close to it. It would have to be Warsow. Mainly because of the Quake/Doom feel of both and the fact that those are 2 games using cel-shaded graphics in both as a branch off of Doom/Quake. This is a great game now and hopefully it keeps building upon what it has accomplished in a good way. Kinda like Warsow ;D

Disclaimer: I have the main developer of the game on my friendslist so I could constantly harass him about bugs (Slope bug haha!) in the game, while in early access.

If you don't like Oldschool FPS's like Quake, DooM, Serious Sam, or Unreal this game may be too fast for you.
Also the game is kinda short, you can plow through it within 3-5 hrs, so dont expect 20 hour long game (No workshop maps).

You run around in the levels like a speedboat on crack which is reminiscent of the olden days of FPS'es.
The shooting mechanic got a heavy feel to it because of the way the camera sways after triggering the weapon, which makes it really satisfying when you skillfully shoot 12 aliens in a row with a shotgun blast to the groin or to the face, it doesn't matter, gore ensues.

The Finisher mechanic is also amazing, the pistol shoots a railgun like laser which obilerates EVERYTHING in its way for example.

Aesthetically, well its a subjective matter but I love it but no one can deny that it's consistent and no real mistakes were made on the artstyle.

This game is gorgeous, mechanically and aesthetically.

Addendum:
Also if you turn of Camera movement you should get some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ skill! :>

ggwp Final boss entertainment.

It's more polished than Rise of the Triad 2013, it's more old-school than Shadow Warrior 2013 and it's more score driven than Serious Sam (CHAIN KILL FINISHERS FTW)

If you truly love 90s/Arcade FPS, buy it.

Fast-paced combat, interesting level design, an awesome art style, powerful weaponry that's satisfying to use, a unique soundtrack, and an addictive kill-chain mechanic - in the realm of arcadey old-school style FPS's, Wrack has a lot going for it.

I've been following the development of this game since its creator, Brad Carney, announced it about six years ago, and in some ways it's turned out better than I could have expected. Sprinting around levels at ridiculous speeds, dodging projectiles, avoiding melee attacks, mowing down hordes of enemies with guns that look and sound great - Wrack does some things that many first person shooters have done in the past, but it does it with a stylish flair that few can match. Beyond that, though, I can't think of any other FPS that does boss battles like this one does, and while there are probably other games in the genre with similar mechanics to the "kill chain/combo finisher" feature of Wrack, I don't know of any that have done it nearly as well.

There's a pure joy in taking down foes with blast after blast of your shotgun, hearing the audio counter for your kill chain getting louder and louder, then charging up a final, massive shot that clears out an entire room. Getting long combos and high scores in Wrack isn't easy, but it's rewarding and really damn fun. Speaking of shotguns, I would assert that this game has one of the best in the genre, ranking up with the others from Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, FEAR, and Halo. It also features a backup melee weapon that is available at all times but is (shockingly) useful, and a rocket launcher that's a stupid amount of fun to use. The difficulty levels are also noteworthy in that harder ones do not turn enemies into bullet sponges by giving them more health; it's a matter of how deadly they are to you, not the other way around.

Special shout-out also goes to Bobby Prince for the music and sound effects. The soundtrack gets rather quirky at times, but it's definitely memorable, and everything in the game sounds excellent. That's not to say that the modellers, texture artists, and animators aren't worth mentioning either; Wrack looks damn good.

I kinda wish the pistol was easier to get kill chains with and had a more effective Finisher move, but beyond that, about the only non-nitpick complaint I have is that there isn't more of this game. It's got a solid amount of content for its price, with high replayability; I just want to see the addition of more levels, enemies, bosses, weapons, etc. in either more Episodes (free or otherwise) or a full sequel. I can only hope this game ends up being the success I feel it deserves to be.
