In all seriousness, I like the new Doom Reboot/Sequel/Prequel/Something, but what I'd call an actual modern Sequel to the great Doom of the '90 I'd say Wrack
Cool Music, Nice Weapons, Tons of Combos, Incredibly fast, Kinda Violent (not that much though).
It is a Sequel, made by another company, with another title, with another protagonist, another story, yadda yadda.
It truly is a Spiritual Successor to Doom
And I'd reccomend it

+Total invincibility is a matter of skill because only the sniper enemy type has a hitscan weapon, and even he has to charge up his shot and gives away a distinct warning signal while doing so.
+buttery smooth on old hardware (1080p 60 FPS on Phenom II X4 965 (4x3,4 GHz), HD7850 (2GB GDDR5))

*Cel-Shading graphics are a matter of taste, I didn't like them but that doesn't mean you won't like them either.
*A story is being told, though it's never in the focus of the game. If you search for a narrative-driven game, this isn't it.
*Workshop support and modtools (are not being listed as + because custom content is not the developers' achievement)

-Score system and extra lives are only important on the highest diff. grade due to quicksaving/-loading being disabled.
-Combos turn the Shotgun into an almighty murder machine
-Very few enemy types, most of which look almost identical (same models recolored)
-Only 5 Weapons total in the game - Sword, Pistol, Shotgun, Automatic Rifle, Rocket Launcher


I am unable to pinpoint the exact issue, but somehow to me the game felt boring after just over half an hour of playtime.

Still, refunds are a thing now. You can at least give the game a chance.

A very dry FPS game. It gets very repetitive really fast and the story's as arid as the Sahara Desert, but I aploud it somewhat for attempting to recapture the spirit of more classic FPS's, like DOOM. Can't recommend it personally, even though I'd like to. Also, the weapons are pretty ♥♥♥♥. They need more punch.

The game tries to be a retro shooter, the likes of doom / wolfenstein / blake stone. It's not a fun game though imo. The movement is different, it feels like it has some acceleration / deceleration that doesn't feel natural. It's trying too hard to feel like quake type movement, only by coming off far far worse.

I hate to say this because I have respect for the guy's previous work on blake stone/planet strike, doom games and wolfenstein 3d. Bobby Prince's tunes in this game just doesn't come off very nice to me. I haven't played many levels in the game so maybe some other levels might have better music, but I from early levels the sound/tone of guitar sounds very VST-ish, and not very authentic. I'm sure it doesn't help the case much when the game itself feels bad, but regardless I feel it could've been better maybe.

The gun play / damaging of enemy doesn't feel significant, maybe the graphical response doesn't cut it.. I shoot enemy and unless he takes a killing blow / dies there's really not much reaction from enemy. You can tear enemy to gibs yes, but when they are alive they feel like brick walls, it doesn't feel like you're shooting another being of flesh (even if they're surrounded by layer of armor), it just is very bad.

The reason I'm coming down on this game is because it reminded me of some old good games. Unreal 2 and Quake 2, both games which I think have far greater singleplayer campaign and experience than this game. The story telling in this game is bad, the mechanics/feel of gunplay is bad, the movement is bad, the music could be somewhat better. The platforming was the last nail on the coffin for me. I have 2d platformer games I can play if I want to play platforming games, but why should I do that sort of stuff on a 3d game, where platforming is not as nearly as rewarding or satisfying for me? There 2 mentioned games unreal and quake, they don't have the ammount of platforming this game has. They don't encourage the player to save scumming in-case of failed jump and fall to lava pit. Not even doom 1 and 2 had that many places where you could not get out with a secret or teleport, not many places where you would die without escape if you fell.

It did remind me of unreal 2 and quake 2, mainly because I really rather play those two games instead of this. Begs to question, maybe this game could've been better if it didn't try to do everything at once (score system from wolf3d/bstone, movement from quake, platforming, metroidvania room clearing, sidescrolling bosses). It just isn't a very good game.

Wrack is classic first person shooter which clearly takes much of its inspiration form Doom: der blazing fast gameplay without any gimmicks, even the weapons and power ups are reminiscent of the fps classic. It has only eight levels which make for about five hours of gameplay, additionally every map can be played in Score- and Time Attack mode. More were supposed to be created with the packaged editor, but the Steam Workshop is empty, which might be due to the editor being also very old school and complex to use.
There is nothing wrong with the gameplay of Wrack, if you're looking for an old school FPS, but also does not bring much new: fast paced action with the only goal to reach the end of the level were a boss fight is waiting, on the way numerous mini bosses wait. The weapon selection is rather small, but everything needed is there. The only thing seemingly missing is a sniper rifle, but since the levels are build in a thight manner, its not really needed. The story is not that interesting and the comic cutscenes in between look like concept art, but the most annoying thing about it is cliffhanger ending where it is not clear if it will ever be resolved.
If you're looking for an old school first person shooter you will find a good good in Wrack, especially if you look for Score- and Time Attacking the levels.

This game is not fun.

Platforming in first person shooters is not fun.

Instant death if you fall into lava is not fun.

This game could have been so much better if it followed the lead of classic FPS' and damaged you quickly while you were in lava but gave you a staircase or ladder out. It's such a shame because this game has so much potential.

This game gives me the nostalgic doom feeling with a sense of refinement, but it's not quite there yet. Something feels off, but the nostalgia the music and gameplay gives me helps me overlook the shortcomings. I haven't played through all of the game simply because I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be. If you were a doom fan and like the idea of chaining combos, you might love this game, but don't expect to be blown away

Wrack is a game that only tries replicate gameplay and feel of old FPS games like DOOM & QUAKE but fails at it. Overall gameplay is medicore at best and can only buy you with it's "the old school" feeling, but would be more compareble with other "doom clones" on 90s that nobody remembers now. Arsenal is your standart fps starter pack (It's kinda even shorter than many early FPSs ) and it's also booring to use. The Finisher system is only and kinda original gimmick but is also feels underpowered and never shines through the game. Level design is uninspiring too, and the problem is not art and it's primitivity, but the lack of any interesting ideas, tricks and other engaging moments that made DOOM\Quake (Just basic example because you can clearly see where author was inspired) level design interesting. Even if that game was good in all it's elements it's will be just ok doom clone, but wont be great FPS. There is not much to tell about art, music and story too. It's holds on pair with other elements, bland and cringy. That wont be a problem if other parts of the game was good but in the end it's just filling list of blandness of Wrack.

What can I say about this crappy game?

The level design is ♥♥♥♥♥♥, the enemies are unbalanced and moronic, the weapons are sort of fun, but ultimately under whelming. They try to introduce some story, but it's all ham fisted and dull. The characters are unlikeable and bland, and you don't get any type of back story for anyone.

Boss fights are a dull chore, like most of the game in general.

Not to mention the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥ saving system it includes. To think they tried to consider this game close to old school is a shame.

The only thing in this game I don't hate, is the heart. It's pretty damn obvious this game is made by people who made were fans of games like Doom, Quake, and unreal tournament, but it just feels like they based their impressions of the games first level and nothings else.

Hell, they even got Bobby Prince to do the soundtrack, the same guy who did the soundtrack for doom. That being said, it's about the only thing done well.

No thought or structure in this game, all the enemy placements are ♥♥♥♥.

You'd be better off just picking up a copy of DooM and downloading some wads, that'd be far more enjoyable and cheaper.

I would rather play Duke Nukem Forever. Let that sink in a minute.

Graphics: Reminds me alot of Ubisofts XIII
Audio(SFX/Music): SFX are decent, music is fairly basic to almost forgettable.
Control: Good and very configurable on a gamepad
Gameplay: Doom-Inspired, yet still basic. Needs more work done on it.

The story needs ALOT more going on in the beginning of the game. It feels Wrack is the continuation of a game/movie/graphic novel/whatever that I am clearly missing. The bare-bones explanation of the universe is just not enough.

What made me stop playing the game is the lack of an auto or manual save system when a level is completed.
I uninstalled the game after I found out that I could not continue my progress in the game, due to me exiting the game to do other things.

At least I got the game in a cheap bundle and not paid full price for it.

I guess I went in hoping for something a bit different from this game and any review I write will end up being a bit unfair. I was hoping that this would be a fun, fast-paced FPS... Yes, this game is fast-passed and certainly feels like a throwback, but it's the few things that they add in the hopes of differentiaiting themselves that end up being a big disappointment. Frankly, I don't want a scoring mecahnism in an FPS... I don't know what this has become the common trend for FPS games to add an 'arcade mode' to their game but I just don't care about 'chaining' kills or killing as many enemies at one time.. I am not going to revisit the game later to try to better my score and I could care less about any leaderboards... I just want the game to be interesting while I'm playing it. Add some variety to the level design, maybe throw in some new enemies-- both of which this game seems to neglect. Honestly, I just want them to remake Doom with the cell-shaded visuals, i think it would have been a whole lot more interesting and fun than this one.

Pros: Feels like a 90's FPS. Fast. Cool, cel-shaded graphics. Awesome, intense and varied boss battles. Will challenge you, regardless of how experienced you are with FPS'. Reasonably replayable. Almost 50 mods/levels, and they're great, often better than the main content.

Cons: Chaining is only a so-so system. Uninspired and limited content. Repetitive and boring action. Meh level design. The extra modes are barely different from the regular play.

My recommendation: If a lot of the mods sound fun to you, consider getting it. Otherwise, you're better off playing a 90's FPS.

The game does not seem to know what it wants to be.
I will compare it to Doom a lot, because it wears this influence on its sleeve. Its speed is high, there are sometimes hordes of monsters, it has the same composer (Bobby Prince; nice music) and features references in its loading screens. Unlike Doom, it uses checkpoints and has only one quick save slot. And it has a (rudimentary) story which sometimes interrupts the game.

The boss monsters are a chore. In Doom, the bosses were much like ordinary enemies, only deadlier and tougher. You were usually in an arena that was large enough to evade them and gave plenty of cover from their attacks. In Wrack, the bosses usually trap you in a very tight spot. They have attack patterns and sometimes use shields. And homing missiles!

The user interface is another issue I have. Doom managed to have most of the relevant information on screen at all time (in 320x200 resolution!). Wrack does not show how much ammo each weapon has, only the current one. It clutters information all over the screen. On colorful backgrounds, with fancy symbols; but the actual text is comparatively small. Instead of striving for symmetry, I would have preferred the information to be closer together, in one spot and more easily discernible.

Wrack has a prominent score system, but if you care about reaching a high score, you'll have to either learn the levels by heart or focus on one aspect: speed, finding secrets and/or treasure (which will often be in hard to reach places, resulting in deaths) or killing all monsters. These stats are tallied once a level is complete. Kill chains (kill enemies in quick succession, then use a finisher to get a bonus) give an additional score.

I really wish there were options to focus on either story or a high score. So that you could first play to survive and see the story (which is weak in writing and presentation), then come back and try for a harder difficulty and/or better scores without being bothered by the conversations.

Why do I still recommend the game despite all the negative points? Because it works well enough. Running and gunning have no issues. It looks and sounds nice.

Control: Good and very configurable on a gamepad
Gameplay: Doom-Inspired, yet still basic. Needs more work done on it.

The story needs ALOT more going on in the beginning of the game. It feels Wrack is the continuation of a game/movie/graphic novel/whatever that I am clearly missing. The bare-bones explanation of the universe is just not enough.

What made me stop playing the game is the lack of an auto or manual save system when a level is completed.
I uninstalled the game after I found out that I could not continue my progress in the game, due to me exiting the game to do other things.

At least I got the game in a cheap bundle and not paid full price for it.

今の技術でDOOMを作りました的FPS。
所々にQuakeやUnreal Tournamentの匂いも感じられる。

フィールドを走り回り敵をなぎ倒しながらゴールへ辿り着けばクリアというのをひたすら繰り返す、リロードだのカバーだのQTEだの余計な物は一切無いピュアな高速FPS。

「古き良きFPSを今作りたい」という熱意は伝わってくるが、開発しながら旧作の研究を同時進行し、分かった事をアップデートで順次追加しているという風で、全体の作りが素人くさい。

以前は本気で箸にも棒にもかからなかい出来だったが、少しづつ良くなっていき、今はかなり楽しめるようになった。ただまだ詰めが甘い場所も多いので万人にお勧めは出来ない。

このまま改良が続いていくなら現代のDOOMとして良いゲームになりそうなので、それを期待して買うというのは有りだと思う。

◆良い点
クラシカルな高速ピュアFPSである。

リロードだのカバーだのダラダラ続くムービーだのQTEだのが無い。

視認できる速度で飛んできて避けられる敵弾。

2Dアクションゲーム的にきちんと撃って避けてで攻略するボス戦。

考えなしにバカスカ撃っていると微妙に弾が足りなくなる弾薬配置。

爆発するドラム缶とそれに敵を巻き込んで倒せる敵配置。

高速で走り回りながら撃ってもそこそこ当たるオートエイム。

トゥーンレンダリングのポップなグラフィック。

敵を倒した手応えがよく伝わってくる戯画化されたやられモーションと派手な血飛沫とゴア表現。

◆悪い点
止まる時にツーっと滑る。移動を高速にしたなら減速も高速にすべき。

その滑る操作感で落ちたら即死のアスレチックをやらされるステージがある。

ロケットランチャーにまでオートエイム搭載。照準の方向に正確に飛ばないので、壁の陰から撃つと頻繁に壁の角に当って自爆する。

敵の死体や破片にアイテムが埋もれがちで見落とす事がある。

特に意味の感じられないスイッチを押してドアを開けてという無機質なシーケンスを繰り返すだけの面白みの無いステージ構成。

現在計測した所、ゲーム開始時クイックロード時共にローディングは6秒程だがもっと早くなって欲しい。ピュアなFPSにあるローディングは不快。
