Play as a warrior, mage or hunter and customize your character's skills as you see fit. The challenging campaign delivers a story of doubt, treason and loss. You decide the course of the story at key turning points and determine its outcome.

Blackguards is a textbook example of a TRPG. Sadly, this genre seems to be dying out, though the Blackguards series gives me some hope for the future of gaming. I love how the Blackguards system is based off of a German roleplaying engine. Old AD&D games like Pool of Radiance, even Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter NIghts (though I hate the real-time aspect of these) are my favorites, and Blackguards is definitely along that same line.

Some of the positives.
*The customization available is one of this game's many strengths. They allow the player to keep each character unique throughout this game without having too many options as to overwhelm.
*The story isn't that happy-go-lucky anime stuff. It's dark and intriguing. The complaints regarding the main character's amnesia seem gripey to me. Amnesia happens, but it's not overdone. What I mean is that your main character may forget a few things, but won't go through the game complaining about missing memories. The amnesia just adds to the mystery and allows the player to catch up on what has transpired. Make no mistake, though, the focus is on the combat.
*Most battles allow for different ways of completing your mission using objects in the field or terrain. The complaint some make along the lines of "I use the same tactics every time and this game becomes boring" is the result of the choice the individual player has made, not the limitations of the game.
*I love the variety of the enemies you'll face and their crazy portraits.
*The soundtrack is mostly dark but there were several battle tracks I enjoyed.
*Don't expect to get the "+5 Sword of Fiery Judgment" toward the end. The weapons in this game do not provide the means to become amazing in combat, which is very unusual for RPGs. I appreciated the change.

What I didn't like.
*Around 75% through the game, my melee fighters were essentially maxed out. Without assistance from magic, fighters need a lot of luck to be helpful.
*Speaking of luck, that D20 (the to-hit random number generator) is the most evil creature in creation. 90% treated me more like 70%. 1s were very rare and usually happened when I was finishing off a foe with few HP. 20s were frequent, as was foul language coming from me. On top of that, there appeared to be a glitch. I tossed, say, a 14 when 19 or below struck, yet the result was miss. This occurred about one in every 15 attacks (Despite this, the game is very beatable, I've finished it).
*I wish there was more story. Not better story, just more story. I still don't understand the motive for one of the player-controlled characters to follow around the main character. I wish one of the foes was more-developed.

Those that haven't succumbed to mainstream gaming and still appreciate TRPGs can not go wrong in buying this game on sale.

The game starts off well enough but I eventually had to quit. I was getting so frustrated I nearly threw my mouse through my monitor. Blackguards is presented as a game returning to the core roots of RPG strategy goodness. Just check out the multiple videos from Daedalic above for all the stuff that sounds so great about this game. What is presented sounded awesome to me but in reality my two attempts through the game turned into a frustrating slog from one scenario to the next.

I got hooked on the story from the start which turned out to be a prison break. Nothing ground-shakingly new here but it worked for bringing three main characters together and launching them off on what was to be a quest to save the world. The cut-scene interactions just propel the story forward, but did contain some humorous dialogue. City/settlement locations are really just screens you click on to visit the tavern/shop/quest giver, etc. Again, nothing earth-shattering for the genre but where this game was supposed to shine was in the combat.

And the combat on many of the levels was excellent. Some of the scenarios were very challenging and I truly felt good when I had achieved victory conditions. You certainly cannot simply build up your characters and then rush through everything. Planning was necessary. All that was great.

Specific building of your characters is crucial to the point that if you build them wrong, you will find that the difficulty spikes. Character building is handled through allocating skill points. There are a lot of options (FIVE screens worth) and very little in-game guidance on what to build up first. I am sure most players will do what I did and end up resorting to the forums and walkthroughs to know how best to maximize their points. It should not be this difficult or nebulous on building up your characters - especially with this many options. The game reminds you to save often so you can go back to an earlier time and rebuild if needed. But that still stings a little knowing that you lost that progress and will need to make it up.

But then the game started throwing out some curve balls on the scenarios and I found myself needing to restart certain ones again and again. These levels were often fronted by a cut-scene dialogue that had to be clicked through again and again. I just do not understand why they couldn't simply start the level with your characters on the field. Many of these levels had special rules or situations that were not made apparent until you played them. So you learned the "special" rules through failing at the level and had to try again. And again. And again.

It does not help when the game chains scenarios together without a way to rest in-between. You may find that by the end of the 2nd or 3rd scenario you are completely out of potions/health/magic/whatever. And you may need to not only restart that level, but perhaps go back to a prior level so that you end with enough health/magic to be successful in the next one. I could see the game doing this on hardcore difficulty for those who really enjoy upping the difficulty, but I just wanted to veg out after a hard day at work.

By the time I was into the gladiator fights in chapter 2 I realized something. The. Game. Was. No. Fun.

I am recommending a pass on this one. If you do buy it, wait for a nice Steam or bundle sale.

This game is hard, its fun and its not for everyone. plan on playing it and then restarting once you know whats going on. I find the difficulty refreshing. there only a few games like this that are this difficult. Its constantly challenging you wih unfair situations and at times the battles are more like puzzles to be solved. If your looking for a game where you can just put together the most effective , winningest party and then just consistantly kick everythings ♥♥♥, this isnt it. If your looking for a game that will constantly challenge you to find the way to win each battle or string of battles, this is the one.

That being said, there are definitly character builds that work fine up untill a certain battle and then they will not let you procede no matter how hard you try. Its highly reccomended that you check out one of the guides out there that will give you pointers on what to avoid and whats more effective.

Blackguards "can be described as a great success for Daedalic Entertainment, an excellent achievement not only for the remarkable and outstanding gameplay shift setting, but also and above all as the first role-playing game software house and the first Hanseatic turn based title developed by the team known for graphic adventure games. Although improved technically, the title shows a deep gameplay and satisfying, nuanced and full of variables. The story is told through exciting and lines of dialogue between the epic and the easygoing, although losing some stain areas due to some "narrative solutions" lackluster. Great longevity, for a title that can take you to dozens and dozens of hours: the longevity of the campaign came on 40 hours, but the player pays attention to the quests will have far more to play

This game should be a manual about how to fail a game.

It has been a long time I had not the chance to play a game so frustrating:
- wrong hit percentages (I once missed 99% 3 times in a row and I would say 95% means 70% for them)
- difficulty is scaled not on ennemy becoming stronger but you getting weaker (poison lowering stats, map full of traps) or them becoming more numerous (how great to play a turn based game with 20 ennemies)
- repetitive fights (always the same)
- useless quests (you can forge a 9 element spear which is as good as other one you can find easily)
- mage are useless. You have a low mana pool and will always run out of mana. Mana potions are so expansive you just cannot afford them (but the ennemy can).

This game is just a punition. If you are masochist, go for it. For normal people, it is a waste.
