Über dieses Spiel

Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-"LITE" where anyone can be a hero.

Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be colorblind, another might have vertigo-- they could even be a dwarf.

That's OK, because no one is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die all the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade you manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

But you shouldn't listen to me. You should check out the trailer. It explains the game better then I ever could.

If you really want to READ about this game though, then you should check out our bullet list below.
  • Here's what Rogue Legacy IS:
  • A procedurally generated adventure. Explore new castles with every life.
  • Rogue-lite. Your character dies, but with each passing your lineage grows and becomes stronger.
  • Tons of unique traits that makes each playthrough special. Ever wanted to be dyslexic? Now you can!
  • More than 8 classes to choose from (9)! Each class has unique abilities that change the way you play the game.
  • Over 60 different enemies to test your skills against. Hope you like palette-swaps!
  • Massive, expandable skill tree. Rack in the loot to upgrade your manor and give your successors a cutting edge.
  • Oh yeah, there's a Blacksmith and an Enchantress shop but we forgot to show them in the trailer...
  • Equip your heroes with powerful weaponry and armor. Or gain new abilities like flight, dash, and air jumping.
  • Tons of secrets and easter eggs to uncover... or are there? Yes there are.
  • Got a controller? Play with a controller. Big Picture ready.
  • Clowns.

Refunded it after an hour, it was painfully repetitive and dull after the first 30 minutes of gameplay.

I purchased Rogue Legacy mostly because I had already played hours upon hours of Spelunky and wanted another Roguelike game to play. Unfortunately, the only similarities this game has with Spelunky is the permadeath, randomly generated levels, and use of items. That being said, if you enjoy learning patterns rather than memorizing levels (or tearing out your hair trying to finish off a level/section), this is the right game for you.

Curator Review:

Rogue Legacy is a 2D, rogue-like, side scrolling RPG that takes you through a completely procedurally generated world. Battle monsters, collect gold, and find out what happened to old papa as you increase your armor collection. This game is absolutely amazing and if you want to see more, check out the playlist on my channel.

This game is addicting not only because the heritage system is fun and the puns WILL make you laugh- whether you want it or not- but also because there is a ton of customization options available to be unlocked. The more you unlock, the more new options you'll want to unlock next.

The game starts slow and you will probably die a lot if you dont play with a controller. It will also take time to get used to the floaty jumping physics. But once you get used to it- oh boy, will you have fun with this game.

Also quite entertaining when playing it with one more person. Just take turns and gloat at each other's unavoidable demise by evil floating canvas-monsters.

Great game for its genre!

Platformer that has some megaman style difficulty bosses. Loads of stuff to upgrade. Not much narative but thats not the focus on these types of games. Graphics are definitely lacking especially for the price tag but thats my only complaint. I don't mean they are terrible but mainly that most of the animations contain 3 frames of movement. Wait for a sale for this one but you should get some nice challenges out of it!

A thrilling exercise in risk verus reward. While some grinding is necessary to progress in stats, every playthrough is truly unique. Deep customization allows for many interesting strategies.

Hard without a controller but the game is really good.

Every new run, after a death, can be different, thus adding replay value.

I would give this a neutral or mixed rating rather than a positive one If I could, but I don't feel like this game deserves a negative rating, so I'll just rate it up instead. So anyway, If I had to describe Rogue Legacy in three words I'd call it "Roguelike The Game." Because the only really original thing in Rogue Legacy is the descendant system. Instead of respawning as the same character or choosing from a list of pre set character every time you die, you instead choose one of three randomly generated descendants. These descendants all have different classes, traits, and even some character model differences that do play into the gameplay. It doesn't do enough though. Sure the characters all have different strengths and weakness, but besides height and some weight traits most of the traits just make the game harder or have such small bonuses that they really change gameplay. No matter what, you'll always be running around whacking things and collecting as much gold as you can. The only thing that changes is how easy or difficult it becomes. Honestly, I feel like this system would be more impactful if you couldn't choose a descendent because it would mean that you couldn't just negate the system by picking the character with none or the least negative traits. Even if it might've come off as unfair I feel like it would've made death more meaningful because if you had a really good character then you might play more defensively because you could never be sure if the descendent the game would next time would be any good, and that would really help build tension and make you more hesitant to taking risks for loot.

Besides that mechanic though, It's pretty much everything you've come to expect from a Roguelike side scrolling action platformer. On each run you'll play through a new set of levels with varying sizes and layouts, enemies and traps are randomly placed within these levels and use projectiles and attack patterns that are difficult to memorize and avoid, and the game's difficulty curve starts off hard and only gets harder the farther into the castle you get. Even with tons of upgrades, loot, and experience you can die very quickly if you get too cocky (or simply bored with replaying the same types of levels every time you die) and stop paying attention. Even though the game has a similar appearance to, and references Castlevania, notice that I didn't call this a metroidvania game. That’s because when you get down to it Rogue Legacy really isn’t one. You have access to pretty much every area and boss in the game right from the start. The only things blocking you from accessing them is the ever increasing difficulty of the enemies and traps in each new area, how many upgrades and items you’ve acquired, and how good you get at avoiding projectiles. Sometimes it even just comes down to whether you get a good castle layout or not. If you're really good at the game though you can get through the entire thing with just a starting character and the default equipment.

Now you might be expecting me to tell you about the faults of the game, and while there's obvious things like the jumping feeling somewhat floaty and the hit detection being off at times, everything else is entirely subjective. I feel like while the random generation of the game keeps it from getting stale too early, it lacks the refined and well designed structure that something with set levels and characters has. As a result the experience of Rogue Legacy simply has none of the longevity of a well designed Metroidvania, even though it references them. I also feel like the game subscribes to the notion that a hard game equals a good game. At many times Rogue Legacy well simply fill a room with tons of enemies that use tricky attack patterns and shoot fast and hard to avoid projectiles, traps that make you constantly have to move and put yourself in danger, and makes the rooms chaotic messes that have no flow or gradual build up to anything and calls that finished. You pretty much just get bombarded with cluttered rooms from the start and this never changes. Simply making a game hard or random does not mean it's well designed.

Take a game like Dark Souls for example. Dark Souls is a hard game, sure, but if that's all it had going for it then it wouldn't have become the smash hit it eventually ended up being. It had great level design, an interesting combat system, was surprisingly forgiving and easy on the player at times when it could’ve been much harder, and had a mysterious world and setting filled with strange and eccentric characters who went through their own arcs without the player’s input. Rogue Legacy simply doesn't have any of that, and unfortunately it just isn't a very memorable experience as a result. Even the potential story elements which could’ve been fleshed out more, like the diary entries of the ancestor you find or the fact that you the player are throwing members of your own family into what is essentially a meat grinder for personal gain go nowhere. In the end, your enjoyment of Rogue Legacy will simply depend on how much you enjoy Roguelikes as a genre. Because if you're going into it thinking that it will change your opinion of Roguelikes, or because you think it will have really innovative and original elements or design not seen before, then unfortunately you'll just end up being disappointed.

After beating so many New Game +'s, getting all the achievements and defeating all the Obol bosses, I think I am in a position to finally review Rogue Legacy to it's fullest.

First of all, Rogue Legacy is possibly one of the hardest games I've ever played, mentally and physically. Continuously grinding to get better equipment and money was always a psychological thing, and if you didn't have the willpower to do that, you would slowly fall to the game's relentless ability it crush and punish any mistake you make.

And that's the brilliant thing.

Rogue Legacy is a game that I would only recommend to the people who are willing to put in hard time and be crippled by the game's difficulty over and over again.

Pros
Lots of time to be spent
Very fun hack and slash
RPG elements to add that slow but steady progession
Enemies that fit the area and level, and can show players the path they should take
Lots of upgrades to be unlocked and purchased
Tons of different classes to choose from
Bosses are interesting and unique
Random layout every time you enter the castle
Story is interesting

Cons
Enemies can be redundant, as reskins will be found as progession continues
Not forgiving and very punishing to beginners and players not very good at platformers or hack/slashers
May find grinding to be very boring and not a lot of time fighting bosses
Progession is slow and tedious
Insanely difficult Obol bosses (I'm looking at you, Alexander the 4th.)

Overall, Rogue Legacy is a difficult hack and slash RPG game that will punish you for every mistake that you make. It is a brutal ride and is very discouraging at times, but when you finally beat the final boss, the bittersweet taste of satisfaction will stay with you (at least for a while).

Purchase this game only if you are willing to grind and die and grind and die over and over again.

8.8/10

You're going to like it if you're a good player...if you aren't then you need to get good to really enjoy this

Pros:
1-Nice Upgrading System
2-Castel Changes every time
3-More than 300 hours of gameplay (You can play NG+ and NG++ and NG+++ and so on...)
4-Every Heir has is own and unique traits

Cons:
1-Frustrating at times
2-Some Level 255 versions of bosses are too hard and luck based (Alexander The IV is hell)

Very Nice game, 8.5/10
