Since we first ported Papo & Yo to Mac and Linux on Humble Bundle, fans on Steam have been waiting patiently for it as well.

We’d like to thank you for being such passionate fans of this game. You constantly inspire us with your stories and art about what it means to you, and we’re so happy to finally have it available for Mac and Linux on Steam!

We've been working hard on our next game, Time Machine VR, so we’re very sorry for how long it’s taken us to bring Papo to you on these other platforms. Major shout-outs go out to Paul Di Marco, our programmer extraordinaire who took this on and got it done for you. :)

Weird af but fun and deep.

I didn't relate much to the story of this game but it was a worthy project undertaken by the developer and shows much vulnerability. It's open-ended but also goes well as a feels trip for those who relate to having abusive childhoods. Get it even just to support the developer and experience a beautiful work of art in the form of an indie game.

This game manages to be beautiful, haunting and very touching, while being fun and having interesting puzzles. The puzzles give enough challenge to keep you interested and are never so hard that you will get stuck, also I never got stuck because I didn't do the puzzle steps in the precise order intended by the developer.
The graphics are beautiful and the controls are very smooth, I would recomend this game without hesitation.

This game started out as a light-hearted puzzle game. Then it turned into a heart-wrenching puizzle game. 10/10 would recommend!

Only about three hours of playing time. Mostly basic trouble solving. Most time in them is spent jumping around. One mechanic was not entirely obvious to me. You don't need a target on a wall to destroy the frogs. Just throw them at a wall.

The puzzles try to be new or introduce a new idea from one area to the next. It mostly succeeds.

Game tells a decent, basic story. It's done well enough.

Graphics and Aesthetics are decent.

It really probably won't be worth your time unless it's really cheap on sale or free.

There arent many indie games - that earned to be called a true masterpiece -

...but Papo & Yo (Father and Me), 2012 is one of those rare cases.

I play now videogames for at least 20 years.
There arent many games, that I found of utter importance - most games are great or good or just fun. Or all together.
Others are just plain crap or bad games.

And there are others, like Papo & Yo - that shouldnt be missed - because they show us, how our beloved media videogame can go a step farther, than shooting baddies or just platforming or whatever - it goes much farther than just surfacing. But let me tell you why.

Papo & Yo - an adventure game - set in a brazilian fantasy world - full of rad architecture and really atmospheric favelas.
Its an authors game (like Neverending Nightmares) - because Vander Caballero (lead designer) tries to tell us some personal story about a part of his life - and even manages, to make it into a videogame - more important they didnt fail, in any of the disciplines. The game works (at least for me) the fulliest.

The game is very short, but its just fitting for this kind of story/game.

There arent many games out there, that really can touch your soul - and I would say, I cant imagine, a single person, who will not be touched by this great and fragile story - in the ending. Its just not possible.

I dare to say, any receptive videogamer - owes it to himself, to play this well polished gem. Its just a masterpiece!

Story: Okay, now after 4 years after release, almost any should heared of the game or the story.
You play as the boy Quico, who regularly flee into his own fantasy world, due to his harsh relationship with his father.
The only thing, that gives him an alternative, to his abusing (not sexual) father - that he has. Very sad stuff.

Good thing, Quico has this wonderful amout of "fantasy" - because his adorable toy robot Lula - is really alive in this fantasy world - and she is really friendly, and a true "best friend" - even if she is imaginary - in this sense.

This shows me, that Vander & his team, have a huge sense of humanity, etc - because its just so true. I can understand Quico. Even more, Lula has some great super powers to help Qucio in his Quest, about his abusive alcoholic father/and the fantasy favelas of Quicos imagination.

This is just a great idea, to make this with this yin&yan thing (real bad world, because father/fantasy good, with Lula)
But thing arent that simple (they never are in videogames) - the fantasy world is not like a safe haven - to be secure from Monster - no its more like an rearranged reality, that Quico flees himself into, but for sure, Monster still can interact in this world...

The gameplay is plain simple. You play as Quico, from a third person view, you run and jump through the worlds, solving puzzles etc. The special thing, about this is, how the developers managed, to implent those puzzles. I have to say, most of 'em are very creative, in a sense, I didnt encounter before, and I really played tons of games.

When I played, I had never the impression, of a bad designed puzzle, they were all very thought-through and are not repetitive (sure, running & jumping is repetitive) because they really made those puzzles uniquely. Also, they are in some way made, like from an enthusiastic child - in a good sense - like you will have a smile a lot on your face, because everything is so well designed.

The game is very very short, but It still manages, to give you some upgrades during playtime - like if you get Lula, you can use her boost and make a double jump - makes the puzzles, again not repetitive.

Some puzzles are just that clever, you will find yourself saying during playing "Why the heck, did not ANY game came up with this idea - before Papo & Yo" - because you played similar puzzles in other games - and they rarely or never came up in any game with this kind of creativity. Well done, no really - I am impressed by Papo & Yo's level & puzzle design. We have Euclid, Escher-esk stuff, we have child fantasies, we have just a truly masterfully fantasy-setting - NOT YET seen in ANY game before. Chapeau. Awesome stuff!!!!

The artdesign is also awesome. Everything is very atmospheric, you never feel again, like its repetitive levels or design - even if some houses etc surely are. You will not notice. Its that good made. There are details everywhere, like flower pots, futebols (ball for soccer) - I found it very strange, for a brazilian game - not able to interact with the ball?? - but else of that everything rocks. More details, many cool fantasy-architecture of houses and cities - never seen before.
The game gets you from its very first minute, because everything is so well crafted.

The story, isnt that hard to interpret, because you see a lot of flashbacks (real world Quico with his dad) - and you even get enough hints, to find out, without any thinkings, what this is all about. Well done, to tell a story in this simple, but effective ways!

The score, is just also very awesome. I did watch full credits, but I cant remind the one, who is in charge of the score!!!
This score is amazing! The "papo" song in the end just got my heart. No, i didnt cry........but its very very touching.

I'd like to give, an award for the score, an award for game design, an award for art design - an award for Papo & Yo in every category!!!! No really!!!!

There arent many NPCs, but for a game like this, its just fitting. Everything is awesome in this game. The topic is a harsh one, but its cool to see, how such things should be taken care of.

This game found a place in my heart, forever. I will never forget it, because It really hits me, from the very first minute.
I think, receptive gamers wont me dissappointed of this. Promised.

This game, is for me one of those indies, or even videogames that cannot be missed.
No really, you should play this - its an encounter, you wont find on any corner. Its really a bless.

A short tale about the drama of a child, based on a true story.
Don't consider this like a real game, but rather like an interactive movie. If so, you will really appreciate this tale.

A masterpiece on every level. From the expert storytelling to the beautiful music and visual design to the challenging and exciting gameplay, this is a perfect game and a shining example of what the medium is capable of at its best. That's coming to you as a video game player.

Coming to you as a Canadian, this is hands down the best thing the CMF has ever put money into.

A charming little indie game with nice presentation and art direction. The music is lovely and fits the scene perfectly. The graphics are technically average, but still look great. This game is fairly short, but about the right length for a game of this type.
Most of the gameplay is simple puzzle platforming, but the style and atmosphere stops it from getting boring. The puzzles are well designed but fairly casual, so don't expect a challenge. This game would be suitable for young children, although they may not understand the adult message (which is fine).

After enjoying “Brothers – A tale of two sons” (an amazing indie game), I searched for some more indie games that I hoped would be similar, and found this. While Papo & Yo is not quite as good as Brothers, it is still decent and I recommend it.

This game is an excellent imaginative puzzle game that any one can enjoy. The gameplay itself is thoughtfull the story is one of two lonely little kids running from their nightmares, if you want to see for yourself watch my old video of this console classic!

Sad, haunting and also uplifting. Papo & Yo deals with a lot of serious themes, yet deals with them in such creative and imaginative ways. It's story is heavy with metaphors, yet maintains it's vision and morals admirably. And while it may lack innovative or polished design. It's the kind of game that grabs you while you play and sticks with you long after it's done. It's not a happy or even fun game by any stretch. But it's a powerful game that delivers worthwhile messages about addiction, life and learning to grow up.

这个独立小游戏的背景是发生在南美洲的一个贫民窟,主要是讲贫民窟里的小男孩和他的伙伴与怪兽之间相爱相杀的故事。游戏的解密要素还是很简单的,解密的方式也是很独特有趣的,比较新颖,手柄操作也很流畅,闪躲跳一些关卡也不是很难。本来这个游戏是可以在3—4个左右的时间通关,但是我觉得一个2013年做的游戏,把南美风情景色做的惟妙惟肖,画质也不差,着实让我有点边看风景边玩的心态,并没有急着通关。

玩着玩着你会觉得这个游戏是有一定的深意的,为什么怪兽吃了雨蛙以后会变的暴躁,开始攻击小男孩,为什么感觉怪兽吃了就睡睡了就吃,说实话,怪兽并没有主动做任何事,全靠小男孩拿食物拿足球来引导,这些食物足球雨蛙又象征着什么呢,小男孩的伙伴们为什么会说那些话呢。。当你玩到最后一章,快结束的时候,玩家仿佛终于明白了什么。

明白了什么呢,怪兽是爸爸,雨蛙是酒精,小男孩的小伙伴就是他最珍爱的玩具和他的妈妈,食物和足球是玩乐。你再回过头看,原来就是一个喝醉了酒的爸爸,回家后肆意家暴妻子和孩子的一个故事。小男孩内心里觉得爸爸就是一头野兽,不管喝酒还是没喝酒。没喝酒的清醒时刻,还可以陪小男孩一起玩。喝完酒后,完全就是黑化的一个狂野暴怒的怪物,任何人都无法接近,接近的人都将被野兽的袭击,并受到伤害。

纵观结尾,小男孩是讨厌他的爸爸的,甚至是想杀死他爸爸的,最后也的确杀死了爸爸。因为在小男孩的在内心深处是希望家里没有这样的一个爸爸的,这样的爸爸让人不安和恐惧,带给小男孩的只有无尽的伤痛和悲伤。这样的一个想法,说实话,是不该出现在一个将近10岁孩子身上的,可是再回归游戏的背景和地区,你不得不说有些特殊现象在某些特定的区域是属于普遍现象,他们习以为常,甚至引以为傲。就像鲁迅说的那样“哀其不幸,怒其不争”。

游戏制作方也是希望不管世界上哪个国家的儿童和妇女,都能生活在一个正常健康和谐的家庭环境中,批判和声讨家暴对于一个孩子一个家庭乃至一个地区的恶劣影响。就像结尾中,当孩子将怪兽推入无底深渊的时候,阳光也照进了他灰蒙已久的心。但是,相对来说,他解决了怪兽,本身也是一件很残酷的事情,让他一辈子也走不出杀人阴影中。你说小男孩是否是真的赶走了阴霾迎来了阳光呢,那个阳光又是小男孩真正需要的阳光吗?都是值得让人深思的。

好啦,现在跳出游戏的故事,让我想到最近玩的几款独立小游戏,虽然都不是什么大制作大经费的大厂商做的游戏,但都是很有诚意的,引发并同玩家一起对社会乃至世界上存在的一些社会人文宗教伦理等矛盾问题思考,让玩家在玩的过程中不止是玩游戏的本身,而玩的是一种文化,让自身价值观得到扩展和并引发思考。这是一件很棒的事情。

最后,虽然结局比较致郁,但是仍不失为一部剧情画质都很棒的游戏,游戏里面的壁画各种房屋错落的细节将当地人的生活形态表现的很到位。真的很推荐这款游戏,你值得拥有。

so happy that the devs decided to port this game to pc and so happy that i could play it cause it narrate and discuss a serious problem that many people face in their lives , DRINKING problem.
-first of all this whole atmospheric third-person puzzle-platformer game is a like a metaphor. Every part of it. you play as a kid who is trying to escape reality cause his father drinks a lot and becomes abusive ( the plot twist in the end is really sad and made me cry :( )
-your playground is a colorful shanty town which you can change and alter part of it to solve easy to medium puzzles , nothing hard and your main objective is to escape from a monster and try to cure him.
-didn't face any problems or bugs, everything was smooth
-the music is very emotional and really good, voice acting is in a different language but still good, and the sound effect are perfect.
- easy achievements but sadly no cards to craft a badge
- takes 4 to 5 h to complete .
i highly recommend this gem to anyone who likes platform games and emotional/atmospheric games such as me ( i did cry in the end T^T )
- i was going to say that the price is a bit too much but after i finished the game i think its worth it .

A fun and beautiful little puzzle platformer that has you romping though a fantastical South American cityscape.
As you progress, the colourful, surrealistic setting soon becomes juxtaposed against the darker reality of a poignant backstory with elements of addiction, abuse, and loss but also of teamwork and survival.

Watch out for feels.
I mean, my cold black heart felt nothing but you might.
Okay, I might have had a 'minor' case of the feels... Don't judge me!

The puzzles are not difficult and it is more of a casual playing game.
About 6 hours to 100% the 10 achievements.

This is a real gem! An Outstandingly artistic third person adventure with a lot of puzzle and platformer elements.

You are changing the world around you as you play and stack, bend and MONSTER your way through the game.

Its crazy what I was able to do in this game and I am sure it will keep me amazed!

Everytime I played a level I was simply overwhelmed by the creativity and prettiness I was thrown into.

The story is subtile but its emotionally catching and definitely will give you a hard time at the end.

Sad, haunting and also uplifting. Papo & Yo deals with a lot of serious themes, yet deals with them in such creative and imaginative ways. It's story is heavy with metaphors, yet maintains it's vision and morals admirably. And while it may lack innovative or polished design. It's the kind of game that grabs you while you play and sticks with you long after it's done. It's not a happy or even fun game by any stretch. But it's a powerful game that delivers worthwhile messages about addiction, life and learning to grow up.

The Review
Papo & Yo which means father and I, is a very fascinating game. The game is about a boy named quico who escapes into his mind in order to deal with the trauma caused by his father. It's very rare that I play a game this creative and cryptic. While on the surface this looks like a simple platformer but in reality it is a more complex puzzle platformer. If you like games with deep mysterious story and great puzzles then you will have fun with this game.

I want to see more games like this. In fact, playing this game makes me want to make a game like this. I can tell you exactly what the message of this game was (I won't, for those who haven't yet played it). I can tell you how the characters struggled, how the story affects us in real life, and the core lesson we learn from this game that allows us to better ourselves outside of it.

I believe games like this will define the way people will view this medium in the future. Just as there are books and movies that really have no real value other than being a fun ride, most games today are played simply because they are enjoyable. But when something like this comes around the corner and gives you a story that challenges your opinions and so clearly mirrors the pain we see in our lives, I have to take notice. This is a small story that mirrors the Big Story, and it's asking us to listen and learn.

So go ahead. Play it with an open mind, and reflect on what you find. This game has a lot to say.

Papo & Yo is a great puzzle-platformer. It's far from perfect - imprecise controls and some bugs regarding animations and clipping hamper the experience a little but not to a severe degree. This is a beautiful story, tackling subject matter that is important but very rarely dealt with, especially in video games. The art is colourful and unique. The soundtrack is good. The puzzles are maybe a bit easy but I think the difficulty in playing this comes from the topics at hand rather than progressing through the levels. You're meant to feel good about completing stuff because the story itself is quite dark. Overall, I think Papo & Yo is a great game that does a lot of things right as a puzzle-platformer, and that's impressive because it tells a unique, emotive and personal story while doing so.

+ Great Audio = Great at setting a south-american feeling
+ Deep story = Although not apparent from the start, the story is deep and the ending will fill you with emotions.

- Short = I managed to compete the game within 3.5 hours

Final Thoughts
If your looking for a good story with a bit of puzzle solving involved, Papo & Yo is the your kind of game.

One more game to demonstrate that telling stories without hurting interactivity (generally done using lenghty cinematics) is entirely possible, if not much more powerful.
Here the non-litteral story is distilled progressively through various clues: short dreams allusion, characters relationship and interactions and a few metaphors. It just works.

As for the actual gameplay, this is a kind of ICO-like gameplay, using different mechamisms (with the usual switches, levers and the like...)
The nicest thing about almost all puzzles is the ability to manipulate the scenery, which is almost a living thing.

This game is short (3~4 hours, more if you want to collect stuff), which is not a problem afaic, because why should story-focused games *need* 40 hours to tell a simple story ? Ihmo this game is no shorter nor longer that it should be, but, most importantly, the story ends in a logical but not quite expected way you will not easily forget.

One of the most memorable games I've played recently, the story is one that touches you and makes you think of.
Level design is also great with original puzzles and art, so is the music, I would highly recommend it to people who like these types of games.
