Morrowind is at the same time absolutely amazing and astonishingly awful game. A paradox in it's own kind.
What's with this battle system? Huh? Where's fun in hitting LMB until you or your foe drops dead? Of course there can be some tactics where you face 2 or more guys but still it's chance over skill. For those who are not in the know: battle system is based on a random chance of hitting. The higher your, say, short sword skill is, the higher the fycking chance for your strike to be successful.
Up next goes the illusion of deepness of the world. Sure, Vvardenfell is big, but what's the point in it? Interiors of the buildings are uninteresting, dungeons are pretty generic, NPCs are all the ♥♥♥♥in same. Almost. Some give you quests, but everybody else is just a filler. Voice acting is cheesy and sucks balls- everyone just humiliates you like "go away" or "speak quickly or go away". It makes me wanna murder every son of a ♥♥♥♥♥ about. Plus I may sound like a ♥♥♥♥♥ but fast traveling is needed. It's urgent cause I hate walking the same roads over and over and over and over again and waste my ♥♥♥♥in time. Hm, maybe I'm a casual ♥♥♥♥♥ anyway.))
The game's pretty ridiculous too. Those animations... My god they're hilarious as HELL! Did they even saw what they did? Has it been it tested? My GOD they walk like ♥♥♥♥in... I don't know who walks like that!
Anyway I'm just complaining. All of these cheap complaints of mine can be easily explained. I played Skyrim first, then Oblivion, then Morrowind. Many people state that since ES III series went downhill but I disagree. With Skyrim a lot of things became much better. Some got worse like too much casualty included plus hand-holding, unbreakable weapons and armor, "every weapon and spell hurts and affects every creature"-system etc. Anyway, stakes were high when I first launched Morrowind. I didn't have a chance to play it back in 2002 cause I only had consoles. So I look at it through the eyes of modern PC gamer. I say "PC gamer" cause I got PC and became one in 2008. That aside, I'm a gamer since 1995 so it's okay.) That's why I complain anyway. Actually game's ♥♥♥♥in fantastic.
Atmosphere. Burnt-out ashlands, giant mushrooms, swamps... The world is one of a kind. Graphics are Ok so it all looks pretty neat.
Music is epic. I love almost every second of it. Better than scores in later installments of ES. Sound design is... not so brilliant to say the least.) Some sounds are so frequent that they either infuriate you or make you laugh. Wait, this is Pros section! Sorry.)
Story is engaging.
Morrowind is harsh. No fast travel, no markers - just a map and your a.s.s. You have to read a f-n journal in order to understand where to go! That's terrific!
Weapons and armor break and you must repair it. Essential for RPG's IMHO.
Some creatures cannot be hurt with particular weapons or skills. For instance, you can't hit the spirit with a sword!!! Hell yeah! Now we're talking!
Game's pretty hard. Anyway, you can adjust difficulty but even on easy your butt can be kicked hard in the wilderness.
Considering that the game came out in 2002 (technologies, you know) all downsides can be and ARE forgiven. Must play for every RPG, fantasy and ES fan.
