Great game!
If you are interested in playing the Witcher series start with The Witcher 1. You will probably need some time to get used to the gameplay, especially the combat system, but the game and the story is worth it.

My favorite RPG of all time.

The storyline is simply amazing and apparently well acclaimed. It is very enjoyable how the storytelling gives a non-rapid tempo as a classic RPG should do, the story sort of unfolds itself and it gets more and more intriguing as it developes. And the choices you make really matter and would lead you to different consequences.

The characters are well designed--each of them is full and bold. The graphics is very impressive, back in the days when it was released, it was outstanding. The music is excellent, the sound effect/voice acting is very well done. These combined with the storyline they present a convincing Temerial/fantasy-medieval age atmosphere.

The combat system is such a unique success. Once you get the hang of it, the swordfighting in this game might just be the most unforgetable experience. (I strongly recommend the hardcore mode where there's no indicator as long as you find the sword-dancing interesting--some people don't, I understand that totally as well.)

There are certain technical issues like random CTDs sometimes, some glitches, map loading when going in and out buildings and spaces could be tedious(especially when you didn't have powerful machine like today's). Certain details are somewhat rough, etc. Yet it doesn't cover the glows.

This game is highly replayable due to its multiple endings feature. I've played through three times(twice before I got it on Steam) and spent over 100 hours in the game.

One of the most glorious gems.

ps: Polish people make good vodka : )

This game.. I mean this serie is wonderful to play. Can't wait to play 2 and 3.I reached 42h gameplay even i didnt do mucn side quests etc. . Just buy and play, thats what u should do. It might be itchy sometimes cuz of controls and dodge of the enemies but don't give up. Here i have some suggestions for the beginners:
Do not play normal or hard mode, they are unnecessarily hard..
Aard and Igni.. signs they are very important
Spend your money before u get Chapter V
And pay attention about potions.. Especially Swallow and Blizzard. U will need them.
These suggestions should've not been in a review but no problem for me, just wanted to share with u my experiences.

The Witcher was released almost nine years ago and regularly goes on sale for a couple of dollars or less. The question for today's player isn't so much if the game is worth your money but rather if it's worth your time. The answer, in true Witcher fashion, isn't entirely black and white.

The game for me was, overall, enjoyable. The combat system is unique, and regardless of it's mixed reviews, I found it to be a serviceable and even somewhat cool RPG combat system. The finishers tend to get a bit repetitive but add a nice, and gruesome, touch. Although the main story isn't incredibly epic, the decisions that you make along the way feel like they are, and have a significant impact on certain characters fates. I particularly enjoyed the economic system in the early to mid-game, when you actually feel like you need to put in work to earn those Orens, because everyone has their hand in your coin pouch, and everything you want to accomplish has a price. Unfortunately this fades towards the end of the game as there simply isn't anything left to buy and no one left to bribe. Graphically the game doesn't look bad, it’s got its hiccups sure, but nothing that interferes with playability.

Geralt, despite being one of the ugliest human beings I've ever seen in this particular game, somehow manages to slay more women than monsters--quite an accomplishment considering aptitude for his profession. The dude simply can't miss, and it's undeniably entertaining to see just how many naughty cards you can collect. It also adds an interesting layer of complexity to Geralt's ongoing romance with a certain red-haired sorceress. No matter how serious their relationship tries to become, the White Wolf simply can't stop banging other women. Relationships are hard. Players unfamiliar with the series may find Geralt's character at first take to be bland, dull, or flat out boring. However, once you begin to understand his complexities, his sarcastic and cynical nature, and his convictions, you'll surely come to appreciate this incredibly rich and interesting character as so many others have.

The world map by today's standards is pretty small but the game easily has 50 hours of content. This translates into A TON of backtracking. By the end of Chapter II I was more familiar with the streets of Vizima than my own neighborhood, which is great because the mini-map is zoomed in way too far and makes navigation a little frustrating. I often found myself needing to open the world map just to find a house that was actually ten feet away. NPCs carry on with their daily lives, which at first seems pretty cool, until you're searching for one for twenty minutes because he's not getting drunk at the inn for once and he's slipped off his magical RPG quest-tracking bracelet. Because Geralt's a Witcher, monster contracts play a role in the game, unfortunately most of them are simply kill X number of Y monster and turn in their eyes/teeth/skins/whatever. One of them even has Geralt collecting flowers...??! That's like hiring Agent 47 to assassinate a weed in your garden.

The recycling of NPC textures is somewhat distracting but doesn't ruin the experience. Expect though, to see the same fat guy, skinny guy, and half-naked hooker models reused over and over throughout your adventure. The game also suffers painfully from a gear shortage. I found myself using the same armor and two swords throughout most of my adventure. The difficulty on normal is average, as it should be, but does have some frustrating moments. Too many enemy groups have to ability to stun-lock Geralt, causing him to stagger like a drunken derelict as you helplessly pound on your peripherals for way longer than any doctor recommends.

Mini-games are present; dice poker has you playing poker by rolling dice instead of drawing cards and is ok at first but you'll quickly get tired of it. There are also fist fights which pit Geralt against an array of fighters of supposedly increasing difficulty, however, once you figure out the somewhat wonky fighting mechanics you'll be able to beat the crap out of even the strongest opponents with virtually no effort. Overall, the mini-games felt like they could have been left out and, much like me at a party, no one would have even noticed they weren’t there.

Now, we circle back to our original question; is The Witcher worth your time in 2016? As a fan of The Witcher 3 I certainly found it to be worth mine. Despite it's age and other concerns, the game is still pretty darn good. If you're completely new to the series it would seem like the obvious place to start but I would actually recommend starting with the Witcher 3 and working back to this one. Many may not agree, but the game is 50 hours long and sometimes feels like a slog. If you're not already invested in these stories and characters, and the lore of this world, playing this game first, as a contemporary player, could potentially turn you off to the entire franchise and that would be a shame. If you're a fan of the Witcher 3, like me, and want to experience more content from this world, then there's no reason not to give this game a spin.

Final score: 7/10 RECOMMENDED.

Thank you for reading and good hunting

What is The Witcher?
The Witcher is a Fantasy RPG where your choices impact the game.

You are Geralt of Rivia. You have lost your memory so you have to find out what happened, who were you and who you are going to be.

Pros and Cons:
  • Replayable and interesting story which is atleast over 30 hours long
  • Semi-open world (There is large areas that you can explore)
  • There is a lot of content and things to do
  • Choices matter and there are 3 different endings
  • You have to pay attention to understand what is happening
  • Unique but rewarding combat (Might be con too)
  • Voice acting is good and so is the music
  • Graphics are decent
  • Good if you want to know the story and lore for Witcher 2 or 3

  • Unique and maybe annoying combat (Depends on the player)
  • Buggy and messy cutscene interactions with some characters

Should I buy The Witcher?
Do you like RPG games? Are you interested in Witcher lore? Are you ready to pay 7,99 euros or less? Absolutely! The Witcher is now one of my favourite games. The combat might feel bad or weird but you will get used to it (Unless you cant stand it you can always mod)

Not an actual spoiler but still... On Chapter V after the beastie problem you should get healing potions and atleast 2 willow potions not to talk about the diamond dust or oils. This will help you alot!

This is nothing like the Witcher 2 or 3. If you are looking for something like those 2 games, do NOT play this.

-Only picks up around Chapter 3. Story is "meh" until then
-Some may find the combat dull. This is not an action game. Do not expect action combat.
-Some of the voice acting is bad. This is most likely stuff they forgot to change from the base to Enhanced Edition. Encountered 2 lines of this, but there may be more.

-Some may find the graphics "meh". I personally do not mind this. The game is 8 years old
-Contains mature themes.
-A few bugs. There are not that many from my experience. This is accepteable for a game this large.
-Sex cards were not necessary, but you are not forced into collecting them.

-Story rich
-Lots of lore (books, characters etc etc)
-Choices are hard. As the game says, there is no good or evil : there are just consequences. Some decisions will be tough and thats how the game was made. These will impact how the game is played out (certain characters may be killed off or quests later on will be changed).
-Save file can be carried over into the Witcher 2 giving decent benefits and good starter gear
-The plot twist
-Contains the videos of THE MAKING OF THE WITCHER in the installation directory. This comes in Polish and with ENglish subtitles.

Not recommended as an ARPG, but is a good RPG in general. Not for those looking for action. MMO playerrs and old school RPG players will probably enjoy this.

One of the best games I\'ve ever played on PC. I love the questing and the story-line. The sidequests are fun and the main storyline is quirky but keeps you going. I feel like I\'ve picked up a good book I just can\'t put down until I\'ve finished. <3 Now if only work would quit getting in the way of my play time!

This is the game that originated the phrase Glorious PC Gaming Master Race.

Almost ten years old, it aged remarkably well: the graphics are still gorgeous; the combat gameplay is still more challenging than Diablo or TES (pay no attention to those dirty console peasants who don't understand its brilliant simplicity and just want to mash buttons); the story is decent and mature, albeit somewhat inconsistent with what The Witcher would become in the sequels. The choices you make actually matter: reactivity is a serious matter here, which is the defining factor of a good RPG. In a sense, it is an open-world-ish game, and there's quite a bit to explore.

All in all, a fine first instalment for a series that would later redefine the world of gaming.

I would like to say The Witcher is the first serious RPG I had played ( played Lord of The Rings Online because of friends ) , and I am really entertained by the vast lore.

I suggest you play this game for the plot, as the battle system seems quite awkward. It's just a matter of clicking at the right moments instead of button mashing, and perhaps brewing HP regen potion are essential.
Also, it is strongly reccomended to often save your games, because mine kept crashing for unknown reasons. :/

Plot wise, it introduces you to the theme of The Witcher, and the quantity of adventures in this game are large, which I like ! I had fun watching the medallion vibrates for suspected monsters that disguise as humans.

TLDR, it's worth to buy, especially when it's 85% off ( which is my case ) :3 .
