Over the Years I have heard how great the Witcher series is and with the recent release of the Witcher 3 and countless appraisal from many people I bought all three games on sale. When I first started playing the combat system almost had me give up entirely but I’m so glad I stuck with. I grew to like the combat system in all of its simplicity and clunkyness. One of the more annoying things in the game was the lack of a good fast travel system or way of traveling faster the game has you run up and down the same street about 100 times. Another annoying part of the witcher was some quest requiring you to come at certain times requiring you to go find a fire place to mediate at which often makes you run to the inn across the map because the game does not allow you to light fires during the day time so the inn was your only option unless you were next to a friend’s house and by some miracle they were inside their home. Although the game lacks some of the convinces of modern games it is still a highly enjoyable experience. Where this game really shines is the story, I have never been more interested in exploring all of the areas and all of the charter quests. The main story also keeps you interested with the many twists. I am so glad that I took the time to play this game I can’t wait to start playing the Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Cons

- Combat System (I personally liked it but it is simple and creates no real challenge)
- No fast travel (Really annoying)
- Many Quest are only available at certain times making you run around looking for a place to meditate constantly.
- Auto save system (Don’t trust it save on your own)

Pros

- Amazing story
- Interesting characters and quests
- Boobies
- Graphics Hold up well
- Very immersive world

Performace

Specs: i5 4690k, 8gb Ram, Gtx 970 (Main rig): i5-6300HQ, Gtx 960m, 8gb Ram (Laptop)
Settings: 1440p, Max setting on everything including AA (Main Rig)
1080p, High Settings 4x AA (Laptop)

Throughout my 46 hours I only experience one crash. My FPS in the open spaces was 100+, but in the vizima my fps would drop to 60+, except in the trade quarter where it fell as low as 30.

Note: When playing on my laptop I experienced a lot of frame stuttering in vizima but got a constant 60+ fps. The stutter turned me off from playing on the laptop.

Overall this game Is a definite buy it showed why people love this series so much.

This game is awesome. People say it's not necessary to finish Witcher 1 and 2 for you to understand the story but give this game a try at least until you get to act 2. Witcher 1 is a story-driven game that takes you into Temeria and your primary goal is to slay some bandits. Sounds fun? Well it is a lot more than that and the twists and turn of the story keeps you hooked until the end. Characters are really well written and the dialogues are my favorite part of the game.

I rate this game a 8.5/10.

Didn’t particularly like the gameplay, but nevertheless I played it all the way through. Very good storyline, one of the best I have seen so far. A unique fantasy world, with many real world problems. The graphics are 8 years old, but still enjoyable. I haven’t played the other Witcher games yet, but it made me want to.

Like many other reviewers will point out, this game is constantly on sale at a cheap price and it is usually bundled with the sequel and/or the 3rd game. It is absolutely worth the value of the money (usually just a few dollars). For that reason alone it's worth playing if you've played the later games and enjoyed them or want to start from the very beginning like I did.

However, it can be tough to get going with it and it seems many people seem to give up in the first few hours. Partly because it is a slightly older game from a small foreign studio at the time when it was made. While the graphics look good and the audio is solid, the movement/combat and inventories can all be quite clunky and takes some time to get used to. If you can forgive that and get past that aspect you can really start to enjoy it.

Altogether, because of the story it is a great game and you can see how much time they put into making it with all of the different quests and plot lines all intersecting throughout the game and your choices do matter. It's also impressive that it is all to English, and they made a re-release (Enhanced Edition) that seems to be a massive improvement to the original game.

The most frustrating thing is just that it can tend to crash a lot, especially in my experience. I had to spend a couple hours over the two weeks I played it trying to figure out fixes and solutions to keep from getting errors and crashes to desktop. That really isn't fun whatsoever. But it should be a testament to how much I enjoyed the game that I wanted to keep playing it even through those frustrations.

Overall, I give it an 8 out of 10 and I highly recommend starting from this title if you want to get into the series. If you're someone who only likes newer smoothed and polished games then you might start with The Witcher 3 and then possibly work your way back to this. Either way, wherever you start, save some money and buy it in a bundle with the other games.

Should be great but poor mechanics make it require a lot of patience. CD Projekt knows this and the subsequent titles are worth everyones time. Witcher 3 being their greatest creation. Buy all three and play 3 first

This game has interesting ideas that built the fundemental models the Witcher sequels use, however it ultimately falls short as a standalone title. The story is the main drive of the game yet it can become very uninteresting very quickly unless you pay attention to every little detail and constantly check your journal for background information on characters and quests. In the end, completing quests essentially boils down to you running from one end of the mostly boring enviroments to the other. Even when you reach the cities, they lack the interactions to make them interesting to explore. However, despite these negatives, I still found that the character interactions were at least enjoyable.

As for the combat, it feels very bland. The only thing making it different from a point-and-click game is the alchemical preparations that can be carried out before each battle. But even that is something most people will choose to avoid, since it is largely useless at lower difficulty levels. Overall, the only thing that really motivated me to carry on was the prospect of using the save file from this game to play Witcher 2. There was really nothing about this game itself that kept me coming back. So, unless your intention is to learn how the Withcer games evolved as a series, you will be just fine skipping this title and reading up the story online to play the sequels.

The Witcher was released almost nine years ago and regularly goes on sale for a couple of dollars or less. The question for today's player isn't so much if the game is worth your money but rather if it's worth your time. The answer, in true Witcher fashion, isn't entirely black and white.

The game for me was, overall, enjoyable. The combat system is unique, and regardless of it's mixed reviews, I found it to be a serviceable and even somewhat cool RPG combat system. The finishers tend to get a bit repetitive but add a nice, and gruesome, touch. Although the main story isn't incredibly epic, the decisions that you make along the way feel like they are, and have a significant impact on certain characters fates. I particularly enjoyed the economic system in the early to mid-game, when you actually feel like you need to put in work to earn those Orens, because everyone has their hand in your coin pouch, and everything you want to accomplish has a price. Unfortunately this fades towards the end of the game as there simply isn't anything left to buy and no one left to bribe. Graphically the game doesn't look bad, it’s got its hiccups sure, but nothing that interferes with playability.

Geralt, despite being one of the ugliest human beings I've ever seen in this particular game, somehow manages to slay more women than monsters--quite an accomplishment considering aptitude for his profession. The dude simply can't miss, and it's undeniably entertaining to see just how many naughty cards you can collect. It also adds an interesting layer of complexity to Geralt's ongoing romance with a certain red-haired sorceress. No matter how serious their relationship tries to become, the White Wolf simply can't stop banging other women. Relationships are hard. Players unfamiliar with the series may find Geralt's character at first take to be bland, dull, or flat out boring. However, once you begin to understand his complexities, his sarcastic and cynical nature, and his convictions, you'll surely come to appreciate this incredibly rich and interesting character as so many others have.

The world map by today's standards is pretty small but the game easily has 50 hours of content. This translates into A TON of backtracking. By the end of Chapter II I was more familiar with the streets of Vizima than my own neighborhood, which is great because the mini-map is zoomed in way too far and makes navigation a little frustrating. I often found myself needing to open the world map just to find a house that was actually ten feet away. NPCs carry on with their daily lives, which at first seems pretty cool, until you're searching for one for twenty minutes because he's not getting drunk at the inn for once and he's slipped off his magical RPG quest-tracking bracelet. Because Geralt's a Witcher, monster contracts play a role in the game, unfortunately most of them are simply kill X number of Y monster and turn in their eyes/teeth/skins/whatever. One of them even has Geralt collecting flowers...??! That's like hiring Agent 47 to assassinate a weed in your garden.

The recycling of NPC textures is somewhat distracting but doesn't ruin the experience. Expect though, to see the same fat guy, skinny guy, and half-naked hooker models reused over and over throughout your adventure. The game also suffers painfully from a gear shortage. I found myself using the same armor and two swords throughout most of my adventure. The difficulty on normal is average, as it should be, but does have some frustrating moments. Too many enemy groups have to ability to stun-lock Geralt, causing him to stagger like a drunken derelict as you helplessly pound on your peripherals for way longer than any doctor recommends.

Mini-games are present; dice poker has you playing poker by rolling dice instead of drawing cards and is ok at first but you'll quickly get tired of it. There are also fist fights which pit Geralt against an array of fighters of supposedly increasing difficulty, however, once you figure out the somewhat wonky fighting mechanics you'll be able to beat the crap out of even the strongest opponents with virtually no effort. Overall, the mini-games felt like they could have been left out and, much like me at a party, no one would have even noticed they weren’t there.

Now, we circle back to our original question; is The Witcher worth your time in 2016? As a fan of The Witcher 3 I certainly found it to be worth mine. Despite it's age and other concerns, the game is still pretty darn good. If you're completely new to the series it would seem like the obvious place to start but I would actually recommend starting with the Witcher 3 and working back to this one. Many may not agree, but the game is 50 hours long and sometimes feels like a slog. If you're not already invested in these stories and characters, and the lore of this world, playing this game first, as a contemporary player, could potentially turn you off to the entire franchise and that would be a shame. If you're a fan of the Witcher 3, like me, and want to experience more content from this world, then there's no reason not to give this game a spin.

Final score: 7/10 RECOMMENDED.

Thank you for reading and good hunting

What is The Witcher?
The Witcher is a Fantasy RPG where your choices impact the game.

Plot
You are Geralt of Rivia. You have lost your memory so you have to find out what happened, who were you and who you are going to be.

Pros and Cons:
Pros:
  • Replayable and interesting story which is atleast over 30 hours long
  • Semi-open world (There is large areas that you can explore)
  • There is a lot of content and things to do
  • Choices matter and there are 3 different endings
  • You have to pay attention to understand what is happening
  • Unique but rewarding combat (Might be con too)
  • Voice acting is good and so is the music
  • Graphics are decent
  • Good if you want to know the story and lore for Witcher 2 or 3

Cons:
  • Unique and maybe annoying combat (Depends on the player)
  • Buggy and messy cutscene interactions with some characters
  • FOKING DROWNERS ARGH!

Should I buy The Witcher?
Do you like RPG games? Are you interested in Witcher lore? Are you ready to pay 7,99 euros or less? Absolutely! The Witcher is now one of my favourite games. The combat might feel bad or weird but you will get used to it (Unless you cant stand it you can always mod)

Tip:
Not an actual spoiler but still... On Chapter V after the beastie problem you should get healing potions and atleast 2 willow potions not to talk about the diamond dust or oils. This will help you alot!

This is nothing like the Witcher 2 or 3. If you are looking for something like those 2 games, do NOT play this.

Cons
-Only picks up around Chapter 3. Story is "meh" until then
-Some may find the combat dull. This is not an action game. Do not expect action combat.
-Some of the voice acting is bad. This is most likely stuff they forgot to change from the base to Enhanced Edition. Encountered 2 lines of this, but there may be more.

Neutral
-Some may find the graphics "meh". I personally do not mind this. The game is 8 years old
-Contains mature themes.
-A few bugs. There are not that many from my experience. This is accepteable for a game this large.
-Sex cards were not necessary, but you are not forced into collecting them.

Pros
-Story rich
-Lots of lore (books, characters etc etc)
-Choices are hard. As the game says, there is no good or evil : there are just consequences. Some decisions will be tough and thats how the game was made. These will impact how the game is played out (certain characters may be killed off or quests later on will be changed).
-Save file can be carried over into the Witcher 2 giving decent benefits and good starter gear
-The plot twist
-Contains the videos of THE MAKING OF THE WITCHER in the installation directory. This comes in Polish and with ENglish subtitles.

Not recommended as an ARPG, but is a good RPG in general. Not for those looking for action. MMO playerrs and old school RPG players will probably enjoy this.

One of the best games I\'ve ever played on PC. I love the questing and the story-line. The sidequests are fun and the main storyline is quirky but keeps you going. I feel like I\'ve picked up a good book I just can\'t put down until I\'ve finished. <3 Now if only work would quit getting in the way of my play time!

This is the game that originated the phrase Glorious PC Gaming Master Race.

Almost ten years old, it aged remarkably well: the graphics are still gorgeous; the combat gameplay is still more challenging than Diablo or TES (pay no attention to those dirty console peasants who don't understand its brilliant simplicity and just want to mash buttons); the story is decent and mature, albeit somewhat inconsistent with what The Witcher would become in the sequels. The choices you make actually matter: reactivity is a serious matter here, which is the defining factor of a good RPG. In a sense, it is an open-world-ish game, and there's quite a bit to explore.

All in all, a fine first instalment for a series that would later redefine the world of gaming.

I would like to say The Witcher is the first serious RPG I had played ( played Lord of The Rings Online because of friends ) , and I am really entertained by the vast lore.

I suggest you play this game for the plot, as the battle system seems quite awkward. It's just a matter of clicking at the right moments instead of button mashing, and perhaps brewing HP regen potion are essential.
Also, it is strongly reccomended to often save your games, because mine kept crashing for unknown reasons. :/

Plot wise, it introduces you to the theme of The Witcher, and the quantity of adventures in this game are large, which I like ! I had fun watching the medallion vibrates for suspected monsters that disguise as humans.

TLDR, it's worth to buy, especially when it's 85% off ( which is my case ) :3 .

The Witcher combines spectacular action and an intriguing storyline. You are a Witcher, a warrior who has been trained to fight since childhood, subjected to mutations and trials that have transformed you. You earn a living killing monsters, and are a member of a brotherhood founded long ago to protect people from werewolves, the undead, and a host of other beasts. The game's visual style and physics systems shoot for a high-powered blend of brutal action, complex RPG options and character configuration, and sweeping storytelling.
