Take One More Turn in Civilization VI

We’re excited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Civilization franchise by announcing Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, the next entry in the award-winning turn-based strategy franchise. Be sure to follow the Steam Community group here and add the game to your Steam wishlist!

http://store.steampowered.com/app/289070
Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, set to launch on PC on October 21, 2016, offers new ways to interact with your world, expand your empire across the map, advance your culture and compete against history’s greatest leaders to build a civilization that will truly stand the test of time. Your story begins later this year!

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI includes:

  • EXPANSIVE EMPIRES: See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before. Each city spans multiple tiles so you can custom build your cities to take full advantage of the local terrain.
  • ACTIVE RESEARCH: Unlock boosts that speed your civilization’s progress through history. To advance more quickly, use your units to actively explore, develop your environment, and discover new cultures.
  • DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game, from primitive first interactions where conflict is a fact of life, to late game alliances and negotiations.
  • COMBINED ARMS: Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units.
  • ENHANCED MULTIPLAYER: In addition to traditional multiplayer modes, cooperate and compete with your friends in a wide variety of situations all designed to be easily completed in a single session.
  • A CIV FOR ALL PLAYERS: Civilization VI provides veteran players new ways to build and tune their civilization for the greatest chance of success. New tutorial systems are designed to introduce new players to the underlying concepts of Civilization so they can easily get started on a path to victory.

First time in my life it happened. I started playing this game during the day and when I next looked at the watch, it was over 8 hours passed. I didn't eat, I didn't sleep. This game is a life ruiner.
I am still playing it. At least it helps with the weight loss :)

10/10

Play and you will not regret.

Have to step in and say my peace about this game. It has no strategic view so you can't run it that well on lower-end machines like Civ V can, and does feel neglected in terms of expansions (as of 6/'16). The one that was released in Rising Tide was interesting and verged on an official fix to one of the things I've wanted in Civ V and Beyond Earth: water combat. Still can't build canals, meaning strips of land 2 tiles wide are still naval great walls, but before long the game makes up for it with hovering units and the variety of ways there are to wage global warfare.

Where Civilization V excels over every other 4X I pick up and put down is combat, and Beyond Earth arguably focuses on it and adds a lot of variety. So I'll focus on it here.

In terms of progression, there's a big chunk of the early game where the only way to keep your cities/outposts from being captured in two turns is to flood the map with units. Defensive positioning is more vital than ever and the terrain generation seems to favor even more extreme mountain/canyon formations to make for clever bottlenecks, but (depending on the map, of course) not having proper balance of naval, airforce and ground forces can lead to getting bumped in 50 turns by someone who does. There's even some units that function almost entirely as support units, functionality that will hopefully be explored further in consequent expansions or mods. Outposts (cities) built on water can even become mobile siege platforms all their own. And there's orbital units but they don't come into play much until later in the game.

There aren't any units that can bombard two tiles away, planes have to be grounded and repaired after a single attack run, and there aren't any nukes, but the early part of a game of Beyond Earth actually feels a lot like the late Modern / early Atomic Eras of Civilization V and in that respect does a good job of picking up where the gameplay of the previous game is just concluding (and that I really prefer combat-wise). From that point on, I think it's fair to say that Beyond Earth distinguishes itself sufficiently and offers combat variables that Civ V cannot.

By mid-game you start to gain levels in "Affinities" which are like Ideologies in Civ V but that you gain automatically through researching technologies that share some or all of three themes. Different affinities offer different units (all of which can be researched by anyone) but gain particular traits according to the order in which you level up affinities. Being Level 3 in two affinities or Level 6 in one but Level 1 in the others will offer different upgrades for your units, upgrades that replace those you might have gotten had you researched different techs first. In this way the decisions you make economically and scientifically force you to decide on certain traits like % damage increase for the number of adjacent units or whether a unit needs to set up or not before attacking. There are also diplomatic traits to choose from that can exacerbate the military upgrades you've chosen. I admit I'm not well-read on the balance of these upgrades, but I'm playing a hot seat against myself to find out, and at the very least enjoy the thematic differences. Different affinities produce different aesthetics.

Territory can be acquired rapidly, and rapidly lost. And in long games with lots of nations you'll go through a lot of units. If you're not, then you're not playing with anyone who knows how to mobilize military and the minute they do they'll cut through your territory. To the extent that it sometimes feels like you're managing as many units as stacks from Civ IV, because they can be destroyed and replaced so fast. This doesn't mean Domination is the only true way to win, only that you'll need to engage in combat to protect your victory, however it's attained.

Non-domination victories are sometimes achieved very quickly, especially if no military challenge is mounted. As in Civ V, AI opponents can be easily exploited if they don't bury you with handicaps first on higher difficulties, and there are a lot of incentives for nurturing peace as the most unique part about each nation are the economic traits you can trade. Espionage is also fairly frenzied, as you'll be deriving a lot of your early research and energy (gold) from it and in many ways is the best way to get a significant advantage if you can kill your opponents spies early. [I may want to find out more about the balance of Covert Ops now that I say this.]

Beyond Earth is not Civ V. Thematically, I wish that there would have been some part of progression dedicated to adapting to the new world, or better yet some connection between the different ways a game of Civ V could end. As it is any cultural differences only take place later in the game in Beyond Earth, when different affinities begin to cause rifts between what are largely the exact same earth cultures. Throughout most of the game the only variety is in what military upgrades you choose and how they might dictate your research, but these differences are only pronounced if you actually utilize your military. Which is good because it's the most endearing part about the game and offers a variety of new combinations for those people who enjoyed late-game combat in Civ V.

But if you don't want to utilize your military, Beyond Earth (at this point) may seem like one-more-turn research purgatory.

Suggestions (or my bucket list of mods to make since the toolkit included with the game seems pretty useful):

-Automated movement of orbital units similar to trade convoys and/or orbital units that actually follow orbitals into other territory

-Polar transit

-Canal building and landfilling

-More impact from climate and more variables to affect surivivability, perhaps according to map type

-Multi-map carryover [I have not played Starships so can't speak to the integration]

-More military automation

Good to pick up on a sale. Expansion (Rising Tide) is a must.

Good tactics with the combat, but its flavour seems confused and disjointed, creating an experience that is enjoyable, but falls short of the usual Civilization fare.

Here is a more positive review about a game that I came to like, but I feel as underappreciated.
I really like the tech web and the affinity system in the Rising Tide DLC they made the game replayable with that.
The hybrid units from the expanded affinity system are quite fun, and they make the combat fun (stealth gameplay!!!)
The aliens are much better than the barbarians. And you can leash a Kraken in this game. (Although you can't release it afterwards). They can really harden the early game if you go full exterminatus mode. If you want peace with them, they make expanding a bit harder, as they sometimes make nests on strategic resources.

The diplomacy is too simplified now. With only agreements and relationship levels avaliable with 2 stats that enable relationship changes. I would have loved a more complex diplomacy system.
And the artifact system is not really used to its full potential. But they definitely make exploring more worthy.

CIV V was terrible in the beginning compared to CIV IV. They released unbalanced untactical game. But in the years they added the mayor expansions the the game became quite enjoyable. This was because a lot of the tacticle gameplay mechanics from CIV IV were added again. In this game: CIV Beyond Earth it is the same. I bought this game when it just came out an quickly became bored with it. No replay value and exactly the same (or worse) gameplay as the previous game. I would rather recommend CIV V with the expansions than this.

I feel like if they would just release the full game immidiatly without adding expansions i would be more inclined to buy it for full price. But with the current strategy i'm not sure if I will buy any new installments (definitely not for full price)

The game's bland. Unlike other Civilization games, once you won once, there's no reason to go bacck to Civ:BE, Victory conditions are boring. Affinity system doesn't feel like it does anything.

While not the greatest civ in the world, It's still very fun to play and can steal hours from you.
Like Vanilla Civ V, its fun but not its prime. Rising tide really adds to the experience and its like getting the Brave New World Expansion, almost required for how much it changes. As I'm writing this review, the steam summer sale is going on, and if you have the extra dosh, get the collection pack that includes the DLC. I'd give it a 6.5/10 without rising tide and a good 8/10 with.

Unlike the rest of the Civilization franchise, this game has no historical value, whatsoever. While I can only find one major historical inaccuracy in Civ V, which is the pikemen holding Halberds, this game has nothing. Nothing. Nothing at all, involving history. You discover PHYSICS again after going into space? What about sailing? Yep, that too!

There's a quote about the five mythical creatures of Earth: "the unicorn, the dragon, the manticore, the griffin, and the llama."

I was so excited for this game but unfortunately it didnt live up to the hype. It feels more like a mod for Civ5 than a full game in its own right. If it was a $15 expansion pack for Civ5 it would have been okay but for the price of a full game I cant recommend this to anyone, I would suggest buying Civ5 instead.

I revisited this game after giving up on it at release due to the awful diplomacy bugs. I wanted to see if it had been fixed, what with the overhaul the Rising Tide DLC included.

I'm still playing this without the DLC because it costs almost as much as the base game which itself feels more like a reskin of Civ 5 than a full game in its own right. Barbarians became aliens, nationstates became stations, the resources have different names, money became energy, happiness became health and luxury resources are gone completely. The only things that have changed in any significant way are idealogical progression using "affinity" points earned through research choices and quest paths and technology progression itself.

Where the research path in Civ 5 takes the form of a horizontal tree, limiting you into 4 or 5 research options at a time, BE's progression is a radial tree with each branch having a few "leaf" research options attached to it as well as unlocking access to another branch or two. This provides significant freedom in research path and allows some interesting tactical choices. Researching toward particular goals is encouraged - work toward a particular building, unit or wonder you're in need of or focus on research options that will increase a particular affinity.

The affinity system is the only thing preventing players from charging toward end-game units immediately. Unit upgrades (equivalent to the change from an archer to a crossbowman in Civ 5) come from your highest of the three affinities - environmentalist Harmony, technological Supremacy and traditionalist Purity. Each has its own distinct style of unit and unlocks specialist buildings and affinity-specific units. It's likely that you'll gain a few levels in each of the affinities on a playthrough but getting access to strong units quickly requires researching options that increase a chosen affinity (best selected based on which of the three main alien resources you have access to in greatest abundance - xenomass for harmony, firaxite for supremacy or floatstone for purity) which means skipping research that would give you new buildings or wonders. That aspect of the game, adapting your research strategy to the game conditions, is quite well done.

Diplomacy is a mess. It was at release and, while I didn't have a denouncement cascade in my recent playthrough, it's still rather bugridden. It would appear that in order to fix a bug that allowed you to take all of a civilization's assets in exchange for a single favour by modifying a recurring deal when the civ asks to extend it they've created a situation where civs will reject their own offers. "Guarded" leaders will pop up with a request of energy in exchange for a favour and, should you accept, will decide the deal isn't good enough.

It's very hard to decide whether to recommend this game or not. Given that the only thing in its favour is the tech tree, I'm going to have to lean toward no on this one.

The game is just boring. It lacks personality. To be fair, I have not purchased RT and I do not plan to, at least not until it's on sale for $5. I purchased BE at launch, suckered into the hype, and I do not feel like spending another $30 to "fix" this game is smart. I left this game on the shelf for many months and just dusted it off again, same issue. I'm halfway through a game and I'm just BORED. No need to continue, DELETE.

So much complaint about Civ BE. I love this game. Compare it to Civ V and sure, it falls flat, but when you consider its merits on its own, the game has a lot of strengths.

- The tech web allows for extremely creative play styles. You can play the same faction, on the same world type, with the same starting resources and situation, and have *completely* different experiences.

- Aliens provide an interesting early-game foil, since you can easily opt for a pacifist stance, go full-on xenophobic and kill every one you see, or somewhere in between. There are benefits and drawbacks to each.

- The affinities could use a bit more depth to them, I think, but with the addition of hybrid affinities with Rising Tide they have started moving in the right direction.

- The military game in Civ BE is *fantastic*, so much more to it than Civ V's combat. Especially with the hybrid units from Rising Tide, you have a lot more abilities and variation available to you. Units pretty much never go obsolete, since they automatically upgrade when new technologies are developed.

It's not a perfect game, but I enjoy it thoroughly and feel it stands up very well on its own alongside other entries in the Civ franchise.

I got this off of Humble Bundle for $13. I'd gladly pay $13 again for this game. I wouldn't pay full price, though. That said I didn't pay full price for Civ V either. I got it all for less than $7.

Is it fun? I think so. It feels a bit more dynamic. The unit upgrade system is pretty neat. The satellite system and alien NPCs are interesting. There's a tech web instead of a tech tree. Culture is pretty much the same, but it has extra bonuses that encourages branching.

The only gripe I have about this game is that the leaders and nations aren't instantly recognizeable like they were in Civ V. Their names are so "futuristic" that I can't hardly keep track. I was tempted to capture cities just to name them New France, New India, etc.

I might come back and update this later, but if I don't rest assured that I am satisfied with my purchase. I'd say this game is definitely worth as much as 13 Arizona teas.

I am torn about this game.

I really like it and I've had a lot of fun with it, but there's still something that leaves me unsatisfied with it.
It somehow feels unfinished and there's always the feeling that this could have been much deeper.

This game lacks a second DLC, which we will sadly enough probably will never see.

I enjoyed my time with this game. Good fun to play with friends against AI.

Note! This is not Alpha Centauri and it is not Civ 6 - This is a game on its own. So you will be dissapointed if you buy this game thinking it is Alpha Centauri 2 or Civ 6.

For me and most others the real draw to a civilization game is progressing through the era of humanity, slowly feeling a sense of progression as you discover the wheel and later research particle physics. I stopped lying to myself a long time ago that Civilization is the best 4X turn based strategy game out there, but the sense of progression through time it gives is not matched by it's competitors. However, strip that progression away and the game is nothing. Building a library to introduce education and learning to your civlization feels great, as you really can see what you are doing and it's effects. Building some random Sci-Fi garbage like an Xenofuel Plant gives no sense of progression, that trademark civlilization feeling. Sid Meier's Civilization Beyond Earth was and is a nifty little experiment, but for a civ game it is boring, uninspired, and bland.

The tech tree is kind of cool though!

Extremely disappointing. Lacks content, lacks units, lacks Civilization. Worst money spent on a game.
