Update #11 - Sewer revamp!

In our efforts to make a polish pass for every single area of the game on our march towards release, we've gone back and made some big overhauls to the sewer floors, possibly the weakest part of the game in the past. Now after our overhaul it's home to some of the most interesting level design and architecture in the game, we hope you enjoy it!

In addition to that we've spent some time polishing up some menus, fixing some bugs, and then adding some extra stuff just for fun...

Change log

  • Revamped sewer area!
  • New sewer procedural room generator!
  • Updated main menu
  • Game now tracks number of wins / deaths
  • Added a fancy death animation for the player
  • Ice wands are a bit more useful now...
  • Ladders!
  • Bugfix - dungeon room generator should no longer attach hallways to windows

As always, thanks for playing and let us know in our discussion area here on Steam your thoughts on the new update, and any issues you run into.

Acerca de este juego

Delver is a first person action roguelike dungeon crawl with crunchy pixels.

Take the role of an adventurer that tries their fate in the dark dungeons (and probably dies horribly). Fight monsters, grab loot, hoard potions, and level up!
Quest for the Yithidian orb at the darkest depths of the dungeon and attempt to bring it back to the surface - getting to it may be the easy part.
Levels are randomly generated in each playthrough so you'll never know quite what's around the corner.

Delver is in an unfinished beta state at the moment and has it's share of bugs and rough edges that need filed down, but it's very playable even in this unfinished state. Help us guide the direction of the game with your early access help and feedback. Our future plans are to revamp all of the art and sound, increase the depth of the RPG system, add special events and minibosses to the random dungeon generator, implement full gamepad support, and add a ton of new content. Help make Delver the best game it can be!

Key Features

  • Fast paced action rpg gameplay
  • Permadeath - once you're dead, you're dead
  • Randomized levels - never the same game twice
  • Loot hoarding
  • Chunky pixels!
  • Modding support - the desktop version lets you make and share your own monsters, items, and texture packs
  • Level editor included!

Pretty decent game. It still needs work and I honestly think you should hold out for a release because it's been four months since the last word on development and honestly this game is barely worth $8 in it's current state. It's a pretty engaging game if dungeon crawls are your thing. It's got all the stuff that makes a dungeon crawler wonderful.

I enjoyed it a lot but I have a couple gripes:

First, this game is like all the other roguelike-likes. It has randomly generated levels and some light RPG mechanics and that's it for likenesses. I would love to have a roguelike-like that doesn't distance itself so heavily from roguelike mechanics, but what can you do.

Second, the difficulty spikes through the ceiling at the end. The game's really easy for something that bills itself as a roguelike game, up until the very end. It's really frustrating to work your way through the game for an hour or two only to hit an unbeatable ending that throws the cheapest difficulty it can at you: flooding the rooms with spawns of endgame enemies at a rate of ~1/sec(that's an honest estimation, not an exaggeration). I'm all for reasonable progression of difficulty, and this ain't it.

Overall, I kinda-sorta recommend this game. It definitely needs work, but I think you'll find some enjoyment out of it in its current state. Whether that enjoyment is worth $8 is debatable. I would personally suggest you wait for more work to be done on it before buying.

Imagine Minecraft. Now imagine if Notch had made good on his promises to make combat and dungeons, instead of pooing out some placeholders and leaving it to work on other projects.
Now imagine someone took them out, and made them a shortish replayable randomized standalone game, that uses doom-style sprites instead of block models.

That's Delver.

This game reminds me of a simpler time in gaming history. A time where a game was played for fun and not to follow some epic story or deal with so many statistics one should be able to major in it. This game is so basic that like 5 different buttons are bound to attack by default. At the same time it is complex, I have never seen such a broad expanse of variation in dungeon gen alone. I have never once felt like I am going through the same thing over and over, they have managed to make a random gen that actually feels random. Even better the abience of the game alone is enough to keep you mystified and intriqued that you want to keep exploring. As you journey you find notes of fallen adventurers and read the hardships they went through and wonder what become of them drawing you deeper. Not to mention how challenging yet doable the goal of the game is. Basically your goal is to retrive an orb at the end of the dungoen and bring it back alive. Seems simple right? It is! But then as you die the first few times and you decide its time to play smart and think before doing. I have felt the need to hold on items and conserve them. This game hits all the right cards, the developers should be proud. I only wish more people played it.

A very interesting blend of dungeon crawl and roguelike, this game has held my attention since I first purchased it. It's a good addition to your library. It's simple enough to start playing when you have limited time or attention, but robust enough that you don't feel like you're playing an indie throwaway. Its randomized levels provide replay value and the ability to stockpile gold between runs allows for you to splurge on a run to give yourself a head start. Also, the developer is very active. It's obvious Delver is a labor of love.

Some tips, for new players:
1. Your HP refills when you level up, so stockpile your food in early levels.
2. If you inventory is getting full, leave a treasure trove of food and wands at the ladder down to the next floor.
3. Heavier armor slows you down, but not as much as you might think.
4. When leveling, I prioritize Health > Attack > Speed. I've never put points into the stats that buff wands or archery.
5. Zombies and caterpillars (but not spiders, as of when I wrote this) will poison you with their attacks.
