"It's beautiful minimalist storytelling, and it fits really well with the gameplay proper, which is delightful in more ways than one." Jared Rosen, Indiestatik.

Teslagrad is definetly a puzzle platformer the puzzles were pretty easy but managed to stay interesting the game seemed to be more about the some times annoying and sometimes weird platforming which was strangely very enjoyable for me.

the boss fights are extremely brutal. they are the standard 3 hit kills after dodging lots and lots of the various attacks they have most of which arent particularly hard but can take awhile. i often found myself making it to one part of the boss dying then the next run making it a smidge further and dying and so on until completion. time consuming and trial and error...meh they were ok.

most indie games try to sell themselves by having a cool art style. i thought this one was particularly cool. i didnt pay attention to the plot which is shown in the form of puppet shows in various side levels. all of the acheivements are pickups in hidden locations. theyre all in fair locations but i would still reccomend looking up the ones you missed once you have less than 5 to go.

Fun puzzle platformer with a fun game mechanic: magnetism! Challenging but solvable puzzles. Some of the bosses are pretty annoying but it's good. Great atmosphere.

I started playing Teslagrad knowing almost nothing about the game, story or mechanics, and it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.

The story is interesting enough, but sometimes told in a somewhat confused way, through "cinematics" and the collections of cards. The cards are not collected in the order of the story however, and so we learn bits and pieces from different parts before we can connect the dots. Although slightly confusing, it didn't really affect much in the game (I just love stories).

The mechanics are utterly simple, so after a bit they fade into the background. Your fingers just know what to do after a point. I was extremely pleased with the challenge the game provided in terms of gameplay. It constantly forced me to improve my skills, learn by trial (and death), jump just a split second later, drop a few pixels lower, time it -just- right. Not once did I mind having to start over after I died, because I really enjoyed it, and my death had usually taught me something helpful. It felt like old-school games, where you had to actually try hard to get past some spots, and there was just no way around it, or any consolation prizes. If you wanted to do it, you had to get better at it. There were not many enemies to fight, but the puzzles to be solved were interesting enough to keep me occupied, and the boss fights were entertaining and rewarding as well.

The game played quite lightly. One day I had to keep pausing, or alt-tabbing to attend to other things, and it remained responsive, smooth and didn't burden my laptop at all. It felt both casual and also deeply immersive at the same time.

I would love to play a sequel.

Teslagrad is a 2D puzzle platformer with some metroidvania elements. I can only reccomend that people get and play this game. I whole-heartedly enjoyed everything about the game. The artwork is excellent and creates a very nice aesthetic style. The attention to detail in the art makes it a joy to take in. The music complements the game very well, often having a somber melancholic tone. The game also does an excellent job of telling it's story through the environment and is surprisingly emotional for having no voice acting. The game controls tightly, and magnetic puzzles are a nice change from the moving around boxes puzzles you see in too many games. The progression of puzzles is excellent and the game does a great job of teaching you. The combat works surprisingly well and the bosses, while hard, feel like a natural extension of the game using all the puzzle mechanics you've gotten used to. Teslagrad is oozing with polish and it's a real shame it hasn't gotten more publicity. I'd rank it up there with Fez and Super Meatboy as one of best modern indie platformers.

Tedious as ♥♥♥♥.

The art is great, and there are some really fun platforming mechanics. It's a very difficult game, but there's nothing wrong with that. The problem is that most of your time in this game is going to be spent re-doing long, tedious platforming sections which you've already proven you can do, to get back to an obstacle that's going to kill you 80% of the time.

It's not the kind of hard game that makes you want to rise to the challenge. It's the kind of hard game that just makes you frustrated you have to do all this ♥♥♥♥ AGAIN.

A great little puzzle platformer. Beautiful artwork and solid gameplay. Pretty linear, but the pacing is really excellent, there is rarely a dull moment. Collecting all the scrolls and the several boss fights add a nice challenge. It took me five hours to 100% so it's not too challenging and there is not much replayability. But I would still completely recommend it as it's one of the most enjoyable games I've played in a while. It's good value at full price, but when it's on sale, it's a must-buy. Avoid spoilers or guides at all costs. It offers a nice sense of discovery if you don't know what you're in for.

It's a dreary night, and a disheveled man carries a bundle close to his chest. Through the pouring rain, a face can be seen peeking from the bundle; it's a young child. The man leaves the boy with a woman, his mother?, and leaves for parts unknown. Time passes, the boy grows, he is still but a child. Men come. They come for him. They force their way in, but the boy has already leapt through his bedroom window, onto the rain slicked rooftops. He runs. They chase.

The opening moments of Teslagrad set a tantalizing stage for what is to come. Dark and alone, silence from all but the storm and the racing footsteps of your pursuers. Upon reaching the tower, the promise of a grandiose adventure is all but assured. for all of its visual splendor, and the mystery surrounding the world, in the end, Teslagrad emerges as a beast only slightly greater than the sum of its often lacking parts.

The tower you will explore is filled with wondrous architecture, artwork and snippets of a tale of partnership, a burgeoning lust for power, and betrayal that followed. You'll discover more of the story of Teslagrad as you climb the tower, solving increasingly complex puzzles. Unfortunately, this complexity often comes more from the mechanics, than from the puzzle's ability to test your wit. The theme of Teslagrad is magnetism, and you soon earn greater abilities in pursuit of its control. Puzzles typically consist of moving blocks or repelling your way higher. Issues arise in that everything has its own physics, and pieces that you may need to move a specific way can be difficult to place, and not for lack of trying. Later puzzles even rely on your ability to repel yourself off of moving objects. Now while this sort of thing is of no real concern in a title such as Portal, in Teslagrad, the danger is far more apparent, and being hit even once will kill you and reset the portion of level that you're in.

In the majority of cases, this isn't a serious problem, as there are often checkpoints near more difficult segments, and even the most frustrating puzzles shouldn't occupy your time for more than twenty minutes. The real trouble occurs during any of the number of boss battles in the game, all of which suffer the dreaded three hits to kill motif. Should any of these bosses' attacks hit you, it's back to the very beginning of each fight, leading to frustrating exercises of trial and error. The bosses can take up an unhealthy portion of your time in Teslagrad, and this is especially true one of the last bunch, who fails to exhibit a truly discernible pattern, due to the game giving physics to every moveable object.

Even with the frustrating boss encounters, and sometimes irritating puzzle design, the sheer beauty of the scenery often manages to quell the rising feelings of annoyance. As you progress, you will be treated to story elements in the form of short puppet plays, all of which lack dialogue, but are arguably stronger without, anyway. The mystery of your predicament is the greatest driving force in Teslagrad, as without it, I imagine many would quit at one of several specific points I can recall.

Lastly, as I feel it should be mentioned, the metroidvania aspect, and how much it pertains to the gameplay as a whole. You can go back and explore any room you've been previously, and there are indeed hidden pathways and secrets. These secrets come in the form of collectible cards, of which you will need to find 15 to even complete the game. And when I say "complete", I mean reach the credits, because to find the true ending, you must collect all 36 missing cards hidden all throughout the map. This sounds fun, and in most Vania style games, it is. But in Teslagrad, many poorly designed puzzles are not meant to be run backwards, and this can make exploration difficult.

Even as I complain of the gameplay elements, I still look fondly on Teslagrad for its story, visuals and unique attempt at magnetic manipulation, as flawed as some of it may be. And while I've beaten the game and seen the vanilla ending, I'm sure I will spend an equal amount of time gathering the remaining cards to see what secrets might be waiting for me at the end. I wholeheartedly recommend Teslagrad, flaws and all, for its incredible visual design and world that is far too grandiose and exciting to be brought down by the occasional, but potent, frustration.

And... it's a good game, all right. Infuriating at times, but overall very pleasant puzzle platformer. Well worth the time spent, I'd say, especially if any of the gripes below doesn't sound bad to you..

What I liked:

- Lovely art design, backgrounds, animation and music. Production values are overall very high, only a step below UbiArt games, I'd say. Very reminiscent of Braid, I'd say.
- Good puzzles, solvable without resorting to outside help in most of the cases. Definitely nothing as obtuse as Gateways final puzzles.
- Interesting player abilities. Can't really say that having magnets and Dishonored Blink was innovative, but the way they were used and interacted with each other very much worked in the game.
- Controls were very good, even if the jumping was a tad too floaty for me. Would be a much bigger problem if the game had a bigger focus on platforming, but given that it was 80% puzzles, I can't really complain.
- Metroidvania-lite concept with no forced backtracking - only some of the secret scrolls required revisiting areas, everything else could be done by the first visit.

What I didn't care for:

- Boss fights, or rather lack of checkpoints during boss fights. Main character doesn't have any sort of health meter/shield, so the second you touch any of the hazards, you're brought back to the beginning of the fight. Which gets a tad annoying if said fight has several stages with new, random hazards added in the later ones.
- Few instances of physics not working consistently - I had worked out a few puzzle solutions, given up on them as non-working after a few tries, only to check online and find that I had the good idea, but one that requires blind luck to work out. This is only true for a few scrolls, nevertheless should not happen.
- Lack of proper map - the game marks your location, sure, but doesn't allow for map scrolling and doesn't mark the collectibles you discovered but haven't solved yet. Which makes the whole map pretty useless.
- The achievement system used by the game (1 for each of 36 hidden collectibles) could do with a revamp - you can 100% the game well before finishing actual playthrough. Would be lovely if the devs added at least a 'Finished the Game" achievement.
- Weird performance issues - I don't have the fastest computer, true, but still, would not expect the game dropping down to 30 fps in few areas. Really noticeable when most of the game is silky smooth. I've also had the game crap out on me three or so times - game logic was still running, but the game stopped updating screen. Had to enter menu and quit the game using only sound effects as a guide.

I will be writing a full review covering everything , if you're interested in ever buying this game read : )

To start i really wanted to give this game a bad review and (Not recommend) because i was disappointed for it showing so much promise in "beautiful story-line" at the beginning but then ends up hours and hours of puzzle after puzzle with no point to feel that it connects to the story somehow .. i can say the same for several indie games...

So as you can see in the screenshots its a puzzle 2D Platformer, with a very well-done animation and the artwork is completely outstanding very very beautiful indeed.

You die from one hit, so the game is set for you to be able to avoid, by dodging and jumping your way through obstacles and enemies but you can also fight so no worries.

if you like puzzlers this game is for you it is well-thought on that matter so it stays interesting, you change between Red/blue (opposites attract) and just figure your way out of the puzzle and use it to fight enemies, and the boss battles , don't even get me started on them they are truly both amazing and challenging.

So summing it up

Whats Great :
1 - Artwork, the game is diffidently worth its price just for that i mean wow, the screenshots don't show half of it, there are so many beautiful things not shown there 10/10
2 - Music + sound effects , both work out perfectly for the game 10/10
3 - Puzzles, challenging , keeps getting interesting without repeating themselves but are a lot 8/10
4 - The story and (Theater plays) are great but they didn't stick to it for 80% of the game 7/10

Whats not so great:
1 - Achievements ... they are not really achievements you just get one every-time you collect one of those lightbulbs or whatever they are.
2 - Probably the only thing that made me feel bad about the game is how they did not stick to the story and just try to refresh it every now and then, yes the theater plays are good and i like them but it was just pure puzzle after puzzle without the sense of the story carrying on , thats it there is litterly nothing else i hate about this beautiful game and i am being 100% true and fair with my review

So if you're into this type of game, just look in some videos of it ( not steam videos) And you will simply fall in love with it
Diffidently a game worth buying at full price to support those awesome devs , yes you might get a bit disappointed if you notice or simply wants the story to carry on but it will only at the end of the game and it still will give you the satisfaction you need to feel the closure

overall rating of the game 8/10
1- for achievements ( probably should have done an achievement for finishing a puzzle in a certain way or something)
1- for not keeping up with the story until the end

Teslagrad is one of the best puzzle platformers I've ever seen, along with Braid, Limbo, Swapper, Guacamelee, The Bridge, Thomas was Alone (and some others), both in terms of its peculiar graphics, intriguing story, and unique gameplay mechanics. If you are a puzzle platformer fan like myself, that game is a must-have without question, and if you are not a puzzle platformer fan but you still want to play a puzzle platformer every now and then, Teslagrad absolutely should have a very high priority.

Pretty short game of about 6 hours. In Teslagrad you start off playing as the village idiot, at first it seems interesting but the controls like all platformers are garbage. Ignore the awards games like this get and awards in general they are usually meaningless. The menu is a mess as well its difficult to even tell what is selected its so poorly designed. The boss fights are laughable at best, if they can be called that. Example is the bird fight, a robot not a human could play this part, it takes zero skill. Run up to the bird wait for animation attack, rinse repeat done, a robot could do that. Like all platformers this game was garbage controls, great idea making a game, then forgetting how to make controls work, just make the whole game based around platforming then implement terrible sluggish response and use of odd button assignments. There 4 BIG buttons on the front of most controllers yet their ignored except the A button. This game gets the award for just being another platformer fail. It may look pretty but this is a game, noone is hanging this on their wall, if we could it would be spit on and burned. People seem to like it because the fights are easy maybe, who knows, maybe because its pretty, either way the controls suck.

The dev is very active and helpful on the forums so +5 for that.

Rating: 5/10 Value: $4.99

It all got started when a friend showed me a remix of the soundtrack for some indie-game. I listened to the song and thought "man, if someone can make a remix THIS good, then the game has to be wonderful!" So when the summer sale conviniently rolled in a few days later, i bought the game. The game was 'Teslagrad'.
I imediatly loved the game, the graphics, the music, and most of all, the story. The gameplay is wonderful; it has wonderful maps, challenging bosses, and all sorts of challenges. The graphics are astounding; just straight up gorgeous. Also, the entire thing is hand-drawn! The music is beutiful, as well! (i just wish there was a way to download the soundtrack) Finaly, the story. Despite the fact that not a single word is spoken, the story is wonderful! An evil king elimenating all the Teslamancers, while a boy sets out into a mysterious tower, destnined to displace the king and restore peace to Teslagrad.

10,000,000,000,000,000,000/10 best indie game game ever.

This is a neat little Puzzler. I mean, wow. They use one mechanic (magnetism) and they use it well.

The graphics are lovely, the characters are well animated and the tools you get are pretty much based on some of Teslas findings.
The puzzles take a slight slope in difficulty with only one or two really hard to figure out (and yes, you get the "God, I have to be friggin Stupid" feeling when you figure them out)
The Story is told without words but in the form of 36 (collectable bonus , more later) pictures who, in their own, are drawn cutely.

But there is where the hard parts start. for the true end (they lampshade it shortly before the end with a subtile 15x [] barrier and a 36 [] = ??? after it (the [] being the picture of a scroll) ) you need to find all 36 and man, some are hidden REALLY well. Some are classic "backtrack when you got 'The Right Stuff'" - parts, but others are hidden behind riddles where you really have to think outside the box of rules they give you and you have to exploit the crap out of them. And then there are others that are just hidden really well (take that as some other kind of puzzle)

But in the end, I Love It. It was a wonderful ride, although a bit short.

Why had I never heard of this game before picking it up in one of the bundles (indie royale maybe? I forget). It is downright amazing! It has the full package with impressive art style, animations and fluid yet head scratching gameplay that will make you suffer quite a bit before you figure it out but so far never in an overly opressive way (I have a feeling that may change before it's over). I especially love how perfectly the game uses nothing but the images left behind on the walls of this strange castle to tell its story. If you like "metroidvanias" or just puzzle platformers you would be doing yourself a disservice if you did not play this memorable gem.
