Great writing, good music, decent neo XCOM-style tactical combat. About 10 hours of solid RPG. Apparently the user content toolset is somewhat obsoleted by the newer Shadowruns.

Nicely done for a kickstarter game, the world of Shadowrun is interesting, mixing sci-fi and fanatsy together. The story is pretty interesting too, no epic saving of the world finally. I just feel like there could be much more to this game and it is very simplistic sometimes and lacks deeper mechanics, like more sidequests and so on. But people who like similar turn based RPGs will definitely enjoy it.

It really is a decent enough game, if a bit misled and misleading in terms of what genre it is or tries to be.

With the long expositary texts, its character creation tool ripped straight from the tabletop rpg roots of the licence and the turn-based combat system that plays in an isometric view, you would swear to your own grandma that it is a role playing game. It looks like it, has the same overal mechanics, and vibe to it. But really, it feels more like a point&clic adventure game.

First of, the game is really fixed on one story to tell. Though it is a pretty cool story, filled with nice enough dialogues, there is no exploration here. Not only the places you go are small in scale and practically free from interactions almost all the time: you can't visit building except if the story leads you there, you can't search for stuff, loot etc, or even random fights, anything to just interact with this world, except when the games needs you to do something. Not only that, but there is no side-quest to speak of, except maybe two that I found out afterwards while searching on forums about branching paths in the main quest.

The other problem is that it doesn't seem that your type of character really matters much. To be fair, I played in "normal" which felt a bit like an "easy mode". I made a character around charisma and intelligence, and not really combat, and though I lost few encounters, I never felt really in danger of being blocked by the combat. Even though the game often forces you into it. And that is the other gripe I have with it: it's not really an rpg in the sense of creating a character that solves problems a certain way. Most of the time, whatever I said, it felt like it didn't matter except for the "role playing" in the sense of speaking like my character would spoke. And certain capacity, like the "security" bonus for dialogues, felt like they were much more useful than others. And it is a pretty short game too (didn't re-finished it on Steam though).

But you know what? It still is a nice and enjoyable game to boot. The aesthetic is nice, the music is cool. The story and characters if not absolutely memorable do there job find. And I had a good time playing it overall. I recommand it! Just know that you are not in the path of a Fallout 2, and more in a pretty linear straight forward point&clic with combat game.

One type of game i'v been looking for! tons of replay value too due to steam workshop! not too sure of the type of game this is but i think the term "turn based tactical" works with "fantasy RPG" here...

this is a game to get if you want to kill off alot of time...

Неплохая РПГ, но по сравнению с серий Baldur's Gate, Fallout и тому подобное - несколько упрощенная на мой взгялд. Многого не хватает (касаемо удобств - миникарта, неполноценная работа с инвентарем, отсуствие журнала заданий, и т.д.), перечиялть можно долго. Опять же линейность...
Сюжет неплох, диалоги - норм, есть пару оригинальных и занятных идей с квествми...
В игре все же есть некая своя изюминка.
70-75 баллов можно поставить.

It's a solid game on its own but in comparison to Dragonfall it's falling short on so many aspects. Having played Dragonfall first, I can't really recommend Shadowrun Returns.

Well Polished, it plays like an great interactive choose your own adventure book. You can tell they really put a lot of time into flshing the game out and making sure people got the best bang for their buck. It's a little short, but they're new and probably have a lot of operating costs. Their next game, Dragon Fall is a LOT longer, and each subsequent game will get better I'm sure. You can tell they're just getting started.

I'm an old school pen and paper shadowrunner. I enjoyed the games on the SNES and Genesis back in the day. (Never played the FPS one that came out years ago...) Regardless, this is different from those games, as it is turn based.

It has all the familiar fare from the Shadowrun universe. Deckers, Street Samurai, Shamans, etc. So, if you are familiar with the setting, it won't take long to get in to the game world.

The mods adds quite a bit to the game, so it is worth getting if you are a fan of this genre or setting. (I got it on sale as most of us do with our games)

Quite some text, but it goes over well if you actually care for the story, which you should if you consider getting a shadowrun game. I like the game. Story is interesting.

Also runs perfectly on linux (archlinux), which I'm thankful for.

I'm new to the franchise but I love anything with a TTRPG feel. I haven't finished the game yet. It's hard not to compare this to Fallout 2. I think if you enjoyed that game you'll like this.

Pros:
+great writing, a joy to read
+satisfying gun sounds imho
+great art/character designs, armor not so much
+allows class mixing based on skills
+every class has something useful. it's worth it putting something into magic just to have access to the basic healing spell or charisma to avoid conflict
+Good soundtrack that can get stuck in your head
Meh:
*kind of have to look up a lot of stuff
*I play fairly frugally but still struggle with money. I probably hire too many mercenaries though but I have very little money for consumables after upgrading weapons and armor.
*scalable difficulty in options menu
*no voice acting
*from a lore perspective, they really crammed as many tropey things [things overused in fiction] in as possible (hacking/cyberpunk, spirits, zombies, high fantasy races, magic, ninjas, etc.). It doesn't take anything away from the experience though. I'm nitpicking.
Cons:
-decking/matrix stuff doesn't show up until half-way through; essentially making a class fairly useless until then (and where I am currently, since). I recommend mixing it with another class. EDIT: I've since beat the game. Roughly 3/4 through, Decking becomes very useful in taking over turrets. Basically every class has the option of adding a key tactical option a some point in the campaign.
-not much lore available in-game
-VERY linear for an RPG but has a good amount of length for the $4 I spent on it.
-some character(s) forced on you for missions aren't nearly as good as hired mercenaries. *cough* Coyote *cought* How can you miss that many time in a row at point blank with a fragging shotgun?!.... *cough* excuse me...

Pros:
Great story, I really enjoyed the writing.
Shadowrun system is in full force and great, I love open-ended character creation.
Immersive and extremely thematic. Really nails this brand of Cyberpunk-Fantasy

Cons:
Pretty short, I clocked in at just over 8 and a half hours, doing what I think is the majority of the game.
Some skill checks don't function properly, even with a Decker, unless my player character had the Decking skill himself, I couldn't open some optional paths/items.
The Matrix, is just kind of tedious. Not necessarily un-fun, but not really well implemented.

All in all, I would recommend this game, a solid 7/10.

SUPERGRA: пройшов за 40 годин, - дуже цікавий сленг, усе просто читається та зрозуміло навіть при низькому рівні англійської. на відміну-від наступної версії набагато складніша, через, ну, дуже- складні перестрілки. Це цікаво грати...

This is the game that got me into the series. Sadly I always missed out on their Kickstarters and old games but I always buy their games when they come out on Steam. The dark world these games have with the deep RPG story always gets me. They just get better and better and at such a cheap price I never think twice about buying them.

I played it after playing Dragonfall... [KAMGUSTA's REVIEW]

...so the reviews will look the same!
Finished in about 13 hours, so I will talk very consciously about it. I didn't know it was an indie kickstarted project developed for smartphones and tablets in mind and this explains a lot of cons.

First, I would like to talk about the gameplay. Having experience with a lot of RPGs and turn-based games I have been disappointed: percentages to hit seem to be flawed, covering system is ridiculous, inventory is caotic, some combo are overpowered (you'll instakill with rifles and relative stats at 8+), experience points are given not by killing enemies, your party doesn't upgrade, AI always attacks first (resolved in S:HK) and it' also dumb (you can wait for them at corners and instakill with overwatch), you are not given so many possibilities of attacking, you can't use your items outside of combat, you are not given the option of using your teamates abilities in the quests, you have a limited choice of weapons and upgrades, etc.

Then, the story: the first hours were nice (I felt like in sci-fi crime scene) but when things started to became interesting... game ended. This is not the only con: 1) Dialogues are scripted, the choices you'll make DO NOT alter the game 2) Skills are useless for dialogues: even when you are given the choice to use them, they just provide a couple of more rows of text to read or just a 20% more money 3) *someone die, so we have to find the culprit* bla bla *turns out all the city is in danger* bla bla *gear up and go final attack*.

Graphics: from the screenshots it seems to be very powerful... it's not. Just colourful.

The matrix puzzles are few and could be passed easily. Same as the envinroment puzzles: you just have to search a little around. There isn't enough attention to the gameplay.

I enjoyed it? Yes and no. Yes because I like these type of games, no because X-Com, Civilizations, Fallout still stand on a higher level. I would call it a nice time waster. If you are looking for a solid game, you should look elsewhere. Dragonfall is better, but I hope they'll get even better in the next chapters.

Одна из лучших игр, в которые мне доводилось играть. Во время прохождения создалось впечатление, будто я читаю великолепную книгу, полностью погрузившись в атмосферу сюжета.

Начало довольно простое: друг просит разобраться в одном деле. Однако с этим другом уже совсем всё не просто. Настоящая интрига, ошеломляющий поворот.

Дальше начинается расследование, в ходе которого раскрываются совершенно невероятные факты, вклиниваются неожиданные детали, интересные герои и события, тесно переплетающиеся друг с другом.

Понравилось, что даётся право выбора, что говорить, как действовать. Порадовала боевая часть игры. А музыка, что звучала на протяжении всей игры, просто окрыляла, насколько она классная!

Играйте в эту игру, рекомендую!

Скучновато. Быстро, легко и скучно. Если бы прошёл мимо игры, ничего бы не потерял. Твёрдая, убедительная тройка. Касательно атмосферы киберпанковского техномира - не проникся. Это совсем не Арканум. Атмосферы как таковой нет. С другой стороны я может быть зажрался? Может мне стоит прыгать и восторгаться? А вот не стану. Как проект, рисованный на коленке - очень хорошо. Но ведь на коленке нарисовать можно шедевр (как например умудрились в Катаури со своими Рейнджерами), сдесь получилась очень академичная, чётко по ГОСТу игра, но очень скучная и сухая.

Вывод - если совсем делать нечего. 6 из 10 баллов. Условно рекомендована)

Сразу оговорюсь - сравнивал игру с шадоураном на megadrive2. И ожидал я того же шадоурана только с пошаговой боёвкой. Увы и ах. Я до последнего ожидал, что это затянутая тренировка(введение?) и вот-вот дадут свободно перемещаться и выполнять рандомные беги по своему желанию, что сюжету не нужно будет следовать, что возможен наём бегущих в барах... Где в конце концов случайные события? Я ошибся. Всем олдфагам, оглядывающимся на ТОТ САМЫЙ шадоуран, не рекомендую. Отдельно отмечу бег в сети, который и являлся самой большой фишкой - его порезали донельзя. Так изуродовать игру надо было постараться. Для всех кому "игра понравилась" вы посмотрите , что было и чего игра лишилась. В итоге если б в названии не было слова "Shadowrun" можно было бы поставить 7. А так 2 из 10. Ксунта дичайшая, не рекомендую.

Сначала игра не хотела устанавливаться (выдавало ошибку), затем в середине обнаружился баг с жуками (игра зависала), который исправлялся "правильным" выбором в диалоге..Техподдержка не пожелала помочь с этими проблемами.. ну и ладно. Несмотря на это игра была пройдена на одном дыхании за 12 часов. Игра очень интересная, но короткая )))

Игра старой школы.
Тут много текста и мало экшена, но какая чудесная история.
Проработанные персонажи и проработанный Мир.
Да она линейна, но есть много вариантов ответа в диалогах и пара побочных заданий.
Если вы скучаете по играм в стиле fallout 1-2 - это отличный вариант.

PS. Не доверяйте Мертвецам.

Определенно одна из лучших олдскульных адвенчур-рпг последних лет 10. Небольшая, без открытого мира, но крайне увлекательная в сюжете и с запоминающимися персонажами. И главное - очень атмосферная.

Отличная игра! Атмосфера и сюжет - на высоте. Советую всем любителям тактических рпг.

Huge oversight on the design of this game, is that noncombat "skill checks" for interacting with the environment can only be done by your character.

What this means is, say you have three hired mercenaries on your team. One of them is the "hacker" role. You go to a computer in a noncombat situation, and want to hack it. You have no hack skill, but the hacker merc you hired has plenty of hacker skill level to break into the computer.

But the game doesn't let your use your hacker to open the computer - only YOUR character's hack skill is checked. So, there is NO reason to hire a hacker, since they can't be used to hack in noncombat situations.

Utterly stupid. If you don't take the hacker role for your character, you literally have NO ability to hack outside of combat situations, since your hacker mercearies can only hack in combat. Thus, hacker mercs are pretty terrible.

There's things like Strength checks too. Like, your character is not strong enought to move a fridge, but the troll you hired has enough to move it. But again, it's not combat, so your troll can't help you. WTF.

AND THERE'S SO MANY BUGS! Scripted events fail to trigger, game freezes, can't progress in missions...Sloppy.

If you're a fan of the old Shadowrun games on Genesis or SNES, this might be for you. If you enjoyed the Shadowrun FPS/Counter-Strike clone from a few years back, you probably won't like this so much. I give this a mixed thumbs up- the combat and leveling system are fun, but the story/writing and conclusion are pretty balls.

I've heard "this game is like XCOM." Scratch that, because it's nothing like XCOM. Sure there are some minor similarities in battle mechanics but that's where the similarities end. This game is good in it's own right. You've got a pretty interesting plot about finding your old friend's killer to make a couple of bucks. From there the story goes down a rabbit hole to uncover the culprit and turns into quite the adventure.

This game isn't necessarily about saving the world or some greater good. You're pretty low on cash and a lot of times I compromised my morals to make a couple bucks. Mercenaries don't come cheap in this run down futuristic, magic tech world and we've all gotta eat. That being said although this game is short, for an RPG you'll end up taking a lot of jobs and get to meet a few brothers in arms. There are many characters you'll encounter but aside from the handful you actually get to know a bit most are for fighting purposes.

There are numerous skills to customize your character with. When you complete missions or do good deals it rewards you with karma points pretty frequently to upgrade whatever you like. I suggest finding a particular specialty and sticking with it. When I started my I decided I'd be a decker with focus on melee skills. Decker was a good choice as there are a couple of situations later in the game that require that particular skill set. But I soon found that most enemies carry guns and you know what they say about bringing a knife to a gun fight. Charisma was an important skill as you can get more money by charming the pants off of people using your words. This also had a couple of layers to it as you learn new etiquette surprisingly it's the choices I don't expect that pop up in dialogue.

Like most strategy RPGs having a diverse range of companions helps in all missions but you'll end up hiring the same people who complement your style. Battles require a bit of strategy as AI isn't stupid. If you cluster all your forces in one spot an enemy will likely bomb your group. That being said you'll have more of the "kill all foes" variety of missions. How you do it is up to you.

This game is good but I would have liked to see more locations or other town like places you could meet runners in between missions. There are conversations referencing other places in the Matrix but sadly you never get to experience them. There were also a couple of bugs that froze my game during missions. They were random and seemed to fix it self after a restart but saving often helps. Hopefully all these issues are resolved in the Dragonfall sequel but in itself it's an alright game and you should try it if you're into tactical, futuristic RPGs.

A terrific game. I was a huge fan of Shadowrun in my youth during the 80's and enjoyed playing it table top. As a video game it is a really good immersive feel. I am not a huge fan of so much reading usually and would have enjoyed more voice acting but this was a fun game non the less.

In 2005 an arena combat shadowrun game emerged, it was a tremendous mistake. It singlehandedly destroyed the beautiful and weird property that wizkids had cultivated for tabletop gaming, for an entire digital audience. I salvaged a disc from a bargain bin a few years after it's release, and died a bit inside realizing titles meant nothing. It'd be like going to your favorite restaurant on your birthday, and getting food poisoning.

Flash forward to Harebrained's inspired idea to do this franchise right, and goodness did they.

The controls are so streamlined you could replace candy crush/angry birds for your toilet gaming habits.

The Lore is solid. This game was written by someone who not just played the tabletop, but obsessed over the subject matter so long, that they could re-create the vivid world of megacorporations and magic, and they expanded on it so well, that even their truly inspired players could use their tools to tell their own cyberpunk stories.

This game is an accomplishment, not just a successful game- not just a beautiful deluge into the gritty future of fantasy, but the redemption of an entire franchise.
