Broken Age is a lot of fun, has a great story and gorgeous art. Having watched the Double Fine Adventure Documentary series, I fell in love with the developers as much as the characters in the game. They really outdid themselves and created a great game. My only gripe is that the puzzles in the second act of the game are fairly convoluted and frustrating, while the puzzles in Act 1 were more light. I know they wanted to harken back to the olden days of Lucasarts puzzle games where most of them make no sense, but that really harmed killed some of the fun for me personally. Otherwise, it is a really great game!!

Overview: I loved the original concepts and the storyline, but the actual gameplay could use a bit of work.

Broken Age features a split storyline - a provincial girl with a fiery spirit, and a boy who grew up an only child on a "spaceship". I'll skip over the spoilers and just comment on the game style. Very few games have more than one hero, making this one more interesting than your standard video game. The characters and conversations are engaging and largely realistic, addressing issues like cults, misjudging people, blind obedience to "how it's always been done", and basic human decency.
The game is primarily linear, but allows a lot of wiggle room to complete parts of an objective in any order. (Eg: Finding the parts to fix a ship can be done in any order, but they must all be found before the story will progress.) Some of these objectives are, as others have noted, nearly impossible to complete without cheating. The most notable example is rewiring the hexipal - who would know to decode a picture sitting in the background of the other character's adventure?
There's a question of sexual references. As far as I can tell, they're so obscure that anyone who understands them already has experience from elsewhere. Raising a teenager and a younger child myself, I can confidently say this game is family-friendly.
But would they WANT to play it? Only if they have a walkthrough. Most of the time it's fun and easy, but some of the puzzles are just too frustrating to bother playing through, and I'm no intellectual slouch. (Btw, kudos to the authors of those walkthroughs!)

Recommended as a good story and an interesting experience. As noted above, the actual gameplay needs work. Classic Double-fine product.

One of the best point and click's I've played in months. A word of advice, hints flow both ways...especially towards the end of the game.

I'm a sucker for a good voice-acted game, but this game was so much more. The musical score was superb. The story ...not the longest I've played, but very very fulfilling. The twist after Chaper I made me go WTH! ...and that was impressive.

I would give it an easy 93/100 - Not the best point and click I've ever played, but definitely in my top ten.

I waited forever to buy this game because of the doubt caused by all the terrible reviews about part 2. Finally, it came in a bundle with games I defintely wanted so I decided, why not give it a try.
And, my initial reaction was something like: screw this game with it's dumb puzzles and stupid story.
Which was not entirely fair.

First of all, the art is very beautiful, cute and just sort of calming to look at (probably because of the colour scheme).
Second of all, the voice acting was very good, and the writing was decent as well.

Act 1 started off brilliantly, I loved the story, and the intrigue and all the questions that started to pop up that needed answers, and I got really excited.
Most of the puzzles in act 1 were fine, not difficult, not extremely illogical or annoying.

Act 2 also started out oke, it still could go anywhere. But it didn't. The story felt extremely rushed, and I felt like they skipped over some built-up from act 1 and left some stuff hanging while kinda dumbing down the story (In my opinion).
But, It was still an ok story, could have been more maybe, but It was not terrible. Which I decided on after some post-hoc consideration.

However, a lot of puzzles in act 2 I really hated. First of all they do the same one like 4-5 times, exactly the same thing, which feels lazy. Also, some of these puzzles you need information from the one character to use for the second character, which takes away a bit from the immersion (how does this character know this information). So after I guess half of act 2 I just asked google what to do because i got way to frustrated and did not enjoy the game anymore.

So, since there is no neutral option for reviews it's a hard decision. But in the end, besides the extremely annoying puzzles, and slightly dissapointing story progression, I still decided to finish it. And I'd like to think that when I at least finish it, it was worth my time.

TL;TR: Not the greatest point 'n click ever, but fun enough when you get it cheap

The only problem I have with this game is that Vella's story is so much better than Shay's. That doesn't mean Shay's is bad, but Vella's is amazing. The puzzle difficulty difference is absurd between the first and second act (I got through the first act by myself and had to resort to guides on the second), but the story is fantastic. It has it's faults but the game is definitely worth a play through.

-Good game.
-Point and click.
-Decent voice acting, a little stiff, but good.
-Many hours can be poured into it, especially as I found the second half to be significantly harder. I'm fairly sure I wouldn't have found the answers to some later puzzles without cheats. Some felt like a definite leap in logic had to be used to solve them.

-The linear time line does limit replayability.
-I don't regret buying this.

There is a chance that this game's story may eventually become interesting, but I despise the general interface technique of forcing you to click everywhere on everything, sometimes multiple times. And even if you can find the usually nonsensical solution straight off, you won't be able to implement it until you've clicked on all of the wrong things. This isn't a puzzle, it's a tree completion exercise.

Ugh.

Utterly Brilliant. Ending could have been a little longer, but still satisfying. Great art, great voices, great story, great puzzles.

Not sure why people are complaining about the puzzles. Go look it up if you get stuck, don't get angry at the game. I had to look up one thing in the whole game (the snake).

Broken Age has made somewhat of a name for itself over the past couple years. Starting its life as a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that has since inspired multiple other dream projects. Crafted by the same team that made the original Grim Fandango, Broken Age was developed as a throwback to adventure games of the past. The game is drawn up in a pastel-heavy style that is both beautiful and appropriate for the wacky antics Double Fine is known for — don’t let it deter you either. Broken Age is a fantastic journey that has a little something for everyone.

The story is split between dual protagonists, Vella and Shay, who share more in common than first meets the eye in a universe filled with twists, turns and well-placed illusions. Vella is a girl who has been selected by her village peers to be a living sacrifice to a monster known as the Mog Chothra — and wishing to shed her fate, sets off to escape. Shay is a young boy who lives in the confines of his very own spaceship, under the watchful eye of a motherly computer who works to protect him at all costs. Shay too grows tired of his “traditions” and sneaks off to seek the thrill of real adventure.

Everything comes to a head at the end of Act 1 when the story concludes several shocking developments before transitioning into the second Act where things become even more interesting for the dual protagonists as they swap places and explore their new worlds. The only downside to this development is the amount of recycled content — you’ll be revisiting a lot of the same NPCs and as a result it takes away from a lot of the discovery the first Act introduced for players. Those qualms aside though, I did enjoy going back and seeing how the circumstantial differences had changed things I already knew. The dialogue alone does not disappoint.

When you start the game you’ll have the option straight away of choosing between Vella or Shay’s tale — both of which can be swapped interchangeably any time you feel like a change of pace. Shay’s story is a bit more exploration and puzzle-heavy, where as Vella’s is more dialogue-heavy with many cutscenes in between traditional fetch-quest segments often found in typical adventure games. You’ll find yourself playing through both characters to get the whole picture here but that’s where Broken Age really shines. Its writing is clever and its characters are done through with a good amount of depth and occasional silliness. Double Fine’s work here is top notch and the various twists and reveals throughout the story kept me reaching for more.

From a gameplay perspective, Broken Age is your standard adventure game romp through the use of point-and-click gestures, inventory management and dialogue options players have come to expect over the years. Broken Age really encourages exploration — and element forced on you to advance the story, which often involves the use of clever puzzles which have equally easy to understand and use controls.

Broken Age is a wonderful experience that I can’t recommend enough. As someone who grew up on the LucasArts-style adventure games of old Double Fine has pulled through with just enough nostalgia and modern aesthetic, offering up a fresh and funny classic in an age where blockbuster games rule the roost.

Gameplay wise, this is pretty much your standard point and click adventure with a solid, easy to use interface.
Story wise, this game is bloody amazing.
It starts out as two seemingly different stories that are both very interesting.
I also really love the art style of this game.
I'd seriously recommend them to turn this into a mini series. I think it would do well.

I will be probably editing this (ongoing) review once I finish this game, but as I am playing this game I have to talk about it because it is SO AWESOME!

I can't tell you about whether the ending will be good or not, but so far it's such a treat! I can't recommend it enough.

If you like Deponia or the likes, then this is a game for you. Though it's a bit more serious than Deponia it has some very hardcore humor subtly integrated into an otherwise innocent looking game.

And when I say innocent looking, this game also has some vast darkness to it. I am so mind-blown by the sheer thinking that must have gone into creating it - or it is otherwise a perfect coincidence that this game is such an unparalleled mixture of LIGHT and/vs DARK.

I was new to the world of gaming when I bought this and I still am but this game was incredible. It was interesting, funny, moving and had a flawless narrative that left me playing this game way into the night. The characters are to die for and the plot is truly amazing. If you're looking for a game that will shake you, love you and move you straight to your core, this is it.
Five stars.

I thought other reviews were exagerating the "Act 1 is amazing/Act 2 is terrible" thing. No. They weren't. The first half of Broken Age is beautiful, with a great duel storyline of young teens rebelling and clever intuitive puzzles. Using items on inappropriate things produces loads of clever dialog.

Then Act 2 comes along. Just go ahead and pull up a guide because the puzzles are annoying and unintuitive now. Several depend on getting timing perfect or referring to things from the other character's side of the story. Item interactions go down significantly as well. The story doesn't really hold up either.

I got Broken Age cheap, from a Humble Bundle, and I'm glad I played Act 1. But Act 2 makes me glad I didn't pay more. Consider this a "barely positive" review, for Act 1 and excellent voice acting and art.
