Articles

“For all its charm, Thomas is more than just the super-minimalist-yet-incredibly-engaging tales of a few plucky AIs. It's the story of games. Of how they get made and played, of the joys and frustrations they bring and of the thousands of tiny iterative processes that go into evolving single titles and the entire medium into their best forms.”
Evan Narcisse, Kotaku

“It proves that you don't need tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of staff to make a game story worth telling, just a good hook, an engaging vision, and a whole lot of heart.”
9/10 – Josh Tolentino, Destructoid

“The understated aesthetic design and unusual co-op puzzles will absorb you for the game’s duration – the wit and personality of the writing, though, will stay with you for much longer.”

Thomas Was Alone raconte l'histoire des premières Intelligences Artificielles sensibles, et de comment elles travaillèrent ensemble pour, et bien, ne pas s'échapper tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.

Thomas Was Alone is a truly indie gem.

In this game you guide a group of rectangles, each one with a unique skill, through dozens of puzzle-platformer levels. There's a beautiful story about friendship and cooperation that will let you hooked on the screen. The music, composed by David Housden, is touching and helps to create an incredible immersive feeling. Thomas Was Alone last just a few hours, but it's very enjoyable if you like this genre.

I've always seen this game on sale but never bought it until I see it in a bundle of my interest. Don't do like I did. If you really love the concept of games as an art, you should play Thomas Was Alone right now. It's fantastic!

I actually passed on this game many times, until a friend recommended it to me. After actually looking into the game a bit more, I realized it was something that would really interest me. When I finally played it, I was pleasantly surprised.

If you like an interesting storyline following unique "characters," puzzle platforming requiring lots of planning, and witty narration (I've been told the narrator might be the same one for The Stanley Parable), then you will like this game.

The aesthetics are good - although the characters are simple shapes, the coloring and effects in the background are well-done. The music and sound effects are very nice, adding appropriate vibes to complement the pacing and atmosphere of each level. The narration is very good, and offers the backstory for the characters. If you like storytelling, you may be surprised by how attached you get to simple shapes. The story is also well-written, and each level adds a piece to the puzzle that is the main plot.

The controls are simple and easy to learn, however, mastering the game mechanics can take a while. As you progress through the story, you will meet new shapes - each with their own special ability - and you will have to use each specialty of each shape propely in order to advance to the next level. The learning curve is mostly minimal to moderate - the main difficulty being in how to solve the later puzzles in the game. Later, there are some timing-based puzzles involved. There are usually checkpoints to help you continue on if death in parts of a level is a possibility. I am currently stuck on a level that requires both timing and careful planning = it is the level where Thomas and the green shape must mirror each others paths or else one (or both of them) will "fall" to a bed of spikes and die. It's taking a while mostly because there are no checkpoints and I get impatient if I die before reaching the end portals.

For achievement hunters, this game has fairly easy achievements (most are progression-based), the hardest ones to acquire being the jump count ones; however, you will most likely get all of them through progression in the game.

The puzzles are challenging and increase in difficulty at a reasonable, fair pace. You are also (usually) shown basic concepts for what to do in easier levels before you encounter them again in subsequent levels (with more difficult puzzles). So long as you pay attention to how you are solving each puzzle, you should have little trouble solving each stage. Trial and error also helps a great deal.

Overall, the game adds a nice flavor to puzzle platforming, and projects a minimalist, serene feeling while you play. Puzzle enthusiasts should definitely give this one a try.

Highly recommend!

Cheers,

Do you feel alone from time to time? No worries, Thomas was even more alone, until he found friendship with strangers that made his life even more worth living.

Thomas Was Alone is a beautiful designed puzzle platformer about friendship that will melt your heart. You’ve probably never played a game cuter than this.

Review
Design:
The graphics of this game are extremely simple, yet extra ordinary. The colors and shapes will guide you through the game easily. It’s minimalistic style might be boring for some people, but it is essential for the game and looks very clean. 8/10

Music & Audio:
Thomas Was Alone features a very fine soundtrack by Davide Housden that catches you within the first seconds. It gets supported by a calm and interesting voice that guides you throug hthe story of Thomas and his new friends. A very beautiful combination of music and audio. 9/10

Gameplay & Addiction:
If you are looking for a game you can finish easily, I suggest you to play this game, but for all friends of long gaming sessions: this is not your game. I’ve finished this game within 5 hours, but I am sure you can do it even faster. I took some time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. To be honest, there have been a few hard passages in this game, but nothing that will hold you up for long. 6/10

Cost-Benefit Equation & resumé:
A lot of positive feedback can not lie, thats for sure. This game is a great one and has to be in the steam libary of everyone who loves to play unique games. You get a few hours of fun and a nicely told story for just a little amount of cash, so get this game. 8/10

For the cheap price of 7.99€ you get more than you can ask. Sell some of your useless DotA2/TF2/CS:GO stuff and buy this game.

Thank you! If you like this review, you can feel free to add me on Steam

I really, really enjoyed this game. It doesn't matter how high a budget is for a game or how large the development team is, so long as you have a good idea in your head an amazing product is possible, Thomas Was Alone proves that.

Thomas Was Alone (in a nutshell) is an Indie platformer where you have to use the unique abilities of each colored shape to overcome obstacles and puzzles. For a game that has such a simple graphics style and very basic gameplay, it has a very compelling and wonderful storyline and atmosphere, and yet even though I don't quite understand the story completely, this game is powerful, it makes you feel for the characters since they go through a ton of character development, even though they're only quadrilaterals... I know, I know, but trust me, this game is worth your time.

The narration voice acting is very well done and so full of character, this game probably has the best narrative I've ever heard in any game, and not just in the Indie genre. The voiceover tells the story of Thomas Was Alone in a witty, charismatic manner as you play and overcome the obstacles ahead leaving you hungry for more of the dialog as you play through the game.

There is very little to fault about this game, I do however think that £6.99 is somewhat of a steep price considering there isn't much length to the game, but I still say that this is worth your time and money. If you are an Indie game collector, enjoy platformers or a compelling story/narrative, this is the game for you.

"Thomas Was Alone" is a minimalistic platformer in which you control multiple rectangles to reach the the exit position for each of them.

While you play the many levels, a really good narrator holds a monolog about friendship, emotions and the purpose of life, giving the simple, colored rectangles with a special ability each a real personality.

Neither the puzzles nor the platforming are very challenging, but the game is very charming and definitely is unique in it's own way. It's pretty expensive for the short playtime, but if it's on sale, I recommend "Thomas Was Alone".

Thomas Was Alone is a simplistic platformer with an entertaining narrational
story. The music sets the atmosphere perfectly, and leads you into really caring
for the blocks that constitute your characters.

The platforming mechanic is basic, but fair, with many savepoints so you
are not drawn out of immersion. There is a sense of satisfaction as you defeat
each challenge, and a sense of adventure as you progress. The narration is well
done, and succeeds wonderfully in having you connect on an emotional level with
the characters.

The combination of well written narrative, beautiful music, and simple
yet challenging platforming all weave together to make an entertaining game
that is easy to recommend.

This game walks the fine line between my second favorite story ever, and pure unmasked rage. Benjamin's Flight was particularly frustrating, but other then that, 10/10

This is probably one of the most emotional, inspiring puzzle games I have ever played. I never would have thought I could be so engaged by moving a few different sized blocks on the screen but the narration, story and soundtrack all work together to create a beautiful game that will makes you glad you finished it even if the puzzles can be a pain sometimes.

the game ,,thomas was alone,, is a curious mix between platforming and puzzles. the characters are small computer quadrilaterals (each referred to as an ,,ai,,) who are achieving sentience and are trying to make sense of their abstract world, their purpose and interract with others. as the player, you can make them move and jump to pass by obstacles, solve logic puzzles and thus progress through the game. for the most part, these require thinking and reasoning, rather than lightning reflexes, although there are one or two parts which require a bit of practice. there are only a few places which are time-limited and require quick action. although simple, the execution of this game is highly polished and very elegant. the narration is superb, and brings the characters to life (often in a humerous way). there is a lovely soundtrack too. this game was recommended to me by harry and i agree with his choice and am thus recommending it to everyone else. enjoy.

Thomas Was Alone is a minimalist puzzle platformer. Playing it was an unique experience.

The gameplay is simple, in this game you guide a group of rectangles, each one with a unique skill, through many puzzle-platformer levels. You have to guide the rectangles to the portal of each one. Each rectangle is different, some of them can jump higher, some lower, some can swim, bounce others like a trampoline, double jump or even defy gravity, but no one is useless. However, this game is short and easy, because it is focused on telling a very interesting story about friendship and cooperation that will keep you hooked and you will feel connected with the rectangles.

The minimalistic design is very well-done, looks very clean and beautiful. The soundtrack is great, together with the not difficult gameplay feels like a relaxing game and the voiceover is very good and a bit funny.

I recommend this game, casual, fun and with a great story, 9/10.
