Recensioni

“For all its charm, Thomas is more than just the super-minimalist-yet-incredibly-engaging tales of a few plucky AIs. It's the story of games. Of how they get made and played, of the joys and frustrations they bring and of the thousands of tiny iterative processes that go into evolving single titles and the entire medium into their best forms.”
Evan Narcisse, Kotaku

“It proves that you don't need tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of staff to make a game story worth telling, just a good hook, an engaging vision, and a whole lot of heart.”
9/10 – Josh Tolentino, Destructoid

“The understated aesthetic design and unusual co-op puzzles will absorb you for the game’s duration – the wit and personality of the writing, though, will stay with you for much longer.”
8/10 – Keza MacDonald, IGN

Informazioni sul gioco

Thomas Was Alone, and then, Well, he Wasn't.

Thomas Was Alone is an indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity. Guide a group of rectangles through a series of obstacles, using their different skills together to get to the end of each environment.
Listen to awesome music by David Housden. Jump over rectangles meticulously placed by Mike Bithell. Listen to voiceover read wistfully and a bit amusingly by Danny Wallace.

Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.

Key Features

  • Utilize the unique skills of 10+ characters.

Thomas Was Alone - Score 8/10
Played on PC with Steam

Escaping from successive mazes the Cubes of different shapes and sizes learn to cooperate with their talents; some jump, some float, some are tiny and some almost fly. A pleasant and pretty 8 hour puzzle platformer I finished in just two sessions !

The story is presented through a narrator, and although of little consequence to the actual game play mechanics, it is quite amusing to hear the choices of anthropomorphisms assigned to the cubes; the yearning for freedom, the fears and distrust of other cubes and their hidden motivations, the longing for companionship or solitude. As a device it enriches the sense of flow and advancement in the game. Thumbs up.

Reassurances
I rate this game as easy and more of a puzzle game than a platformer. In only a handful of the 100 levels did platforming skills need to be razor sharp. I thank the devs as this game could have been made much much harder.

Play ‘Thomas Was Alone’ for a fun light puzzle and platforming experience….

More than meets the eye, a well told story, fun gameplay that becomes increasingly more challenging--with a relatively nice difficulty curve. There is also some genuinely amusing narration, and the game has some good morals, teaching teamwork and the like.

I mean heck, it made me care about tiny quadrilateral beings... "11/10, it's okay!"

Serious note: If you see it for cheap, don't hesitate to throw some pennies at it and give it a try, even if it doesn't immediately strike as "your kind of game".

My only real beef with this game is that, while the difficulty curve is usually friendly, occasionally you will hit a spike (sometimes literally)...and man, oh man, can that get frustrating!

There is an emerging category of games that are defined not by their game play style, but by the quality of the narrative, the overall experience that they deliver, and the memorable impression that they leave on gamers.

Thomas was Alone fits squarely into this class of game.

The gameplay here is a sort of rudimentary platforming with mild puzzle elements. There are over 100 levels in this game, but they are all brief. Maybe 1-2 minutes for most of them, and only a handful that require you to stop and plan.

These brief levels work, though, because they are triggers for narrative dialog of the story. Through narrative these blocks of color are given vivid personalities and character traits.

This works wonderfully. Voiceman David Wallace delivers a story in a manner that is, in turn, sarcastic, earnest, sad, wry, hopeful, and often very funny.

Thomas Was Alone is a smart and engaging must-play indie title. And just the right length at 4-5 hours. Enjoy.

Thomas Was Alone is a fun Indie platformer where you will guide a group of rectangles through different obstacles, using different abilities to help each other through to complete the levels.

The game is enjoyable and worth playing. Who would have thought a game about shapes could have been this charming.

Easy 100% for the achievement hunters out there.
