  • Des créateurs d'Edna & Harvey: The Breakout, Edna & Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes et de The Whispered World

Deponia stars Rufus who is probably the least likely person to be a hero in a game I’ve played in ages. He’s lazy, stubborn, not exceptionally bright, unorganized, and he keeps chucking himself into the sky only to come crashing down; you’d think he would’ve gotten the point by now and learned the sky isn’t having none of his shenanigans. Did I mention that he also reeks of Guybrush Threepwood charm? Fortunately enough all this makes for the perfect combination of characters in a story that’s just as wacky as the inhabitants of a city made of trash.

The only downside to the wonderful animation is that it's often difficult to pick out objects you can interact with, given that they blend so neatly into the background.
Rather handily, you can press the spacebar to highlight all the interactive objects in a scene, but oddly, this rather useful feature isn't pointed out to you at all during the game.
Objects that you pick up like Rufus' mouldy sock are placed into your inventory, which means that yes, you have to make sure you pick up everything in a given scene, lest you have to trek back for it later in order to solve a puzzle.

Still, while some puzzles leave you scratching your head in confusion for a while, the mostly sensible solutions make for a satisfying experience.
Breaking up all the object puzzling are simple minigames, such as solving a jigsaw of broken mosaic pieces, or testing your spatial awareness with rotating block puzzles.
There's even the odd conversational puzzle to deal with too. A process of trial and error means they're hardly taxing, but thanks to some fantastic writing and voice acting and the collection of characters, those exchanges are wonderfully entertaining.
Best of all is an exchange with a malfunctioning postal robot that mixes clever wordplay with a ludicrous subject for a charmingly funny and increasingly complex barrage of rhyme.

Unfortunately, it all ends rather abruptly. Just as things really begin to heat up and you think the many questions raised are to be answered, the game stops. It's a crushing disappointment. To add insult to injury, the game flashes up a "The End…?

So the game looks absolutely gorgeous. Everything is beautifully drawn and the characters animate well enough. I’d say my only complaints are that things you can interact with are completely blended into the environment due to the art style and that the animations could use a few more frames.
Thankfully the first issue is alleviated by pressing the space bar to show an icon on any objects you can interact with. The voice acting has the right amount of charm to it as does the music.

Score: 86 / 100

This was... weird. I mean, it was a good point-and-clicker. The puzzles worked, and were neither totally illogical nor too easy. Probably the only reason I played it through to the end was because the puzzles were compelling. The world-building is very thorough and clever. The story was decent, but predictable, and brought down by the characters. Deponia is a fun setting that deserves a better story and characters happening in it. The one-liners sometimes got a chuckle from me, but...

My two big complaints: First, the main character is not likeable in the least. They tried to write him a sarcastic, misunderstood oddball, but instead he's just a filthy, self-centered, misogynist jerk. He has a few decent one-liners, but he has remarkably few redeeming qualities beyond that. And hanging a lampshade on it by having literally every other character in the game also hate him doesn't actually make it better, and in some ways it makes it worse.
Second, what is with the rampant misogyny? The female protagonist (if you can call her that) is comatose for almost the entire game, and is treated as nothing more than an inconveniently large inventory item for most of it. Heck, one of the early scenes, she's basically being auctioned off (while comatose) by the mayor of the town to the men of the town to do what they like with her, and the major puzzle sequence is how the main character can eliminate his competitors to claim her as his possession. Heck, her name is Goal. She's a prize, not a person, for the entire game. And the only other female character in the game is the stereotypical violent, incessantly nagging ex, entirely one-dimensional, just one sitcom joke about her nagging after another. Is that all women are, Daedalic? Either pliant, helpless, brain-dead prizes to be won or violent nagging shrews? I think you can do better.

Long story short, if clever puzzles and thorough world-building are enough to carry you through a game, go ahead and get/play this one. If you're just really into point-and-click adventure for the sake of a good puzzle (like me), get it on at least 50% discount, and it might be worth your time. Otherwise, I'd pass this one up.

Maybe the sequel will be better.

One of the Best game Series I've played from Daedalic Entertainment (LucasArts Germany). It's 30x Better than James Cameron's Elysium. And by 30x, I mean the Entire Deponia Trilogy (Deponia, Chaos on Deponia & Goodbye Deponia). In fact, I'll sing about it.

"It's kind of pathetic
you get all erratic
about dirty dishes congesting the sink.

I'm tired of your bothers,
remember our fathers
they dwelled in a world
filled with with rubbish and stink.

But when all hope was lost
someone raised from the dust
he was handsome and cunning
his haircut had style.

Courage was shining in his eyes
as he said "Deponia's better than James Cameron's Elysium.

Huzzah, James Cameron's Elysium!

Now as it is written
our hero was smitten
and rescued the maiden
from impending doom.

On a horse made of steel
evil guys on his heels
he rode with the girl
into dawn's early gloom.

She awoke by his kiss
well at least more or less
and the whole part concerining
the uppercut scare
can be pinned at least to some extend
on her damaged brain implant.

Anyway in the big picture
who's gonna care?

Huzzah, who's gonna care?

Historians would die for
a way to decipher
apparantly missing
text passages here.

The still found no reasons
why scratches and lesions
related to goal
subsequently appear.

But then why should it bother you
for he finally managed to
haul her more or less unharmed
to the rendezvous spot.

Whitout expecting any pay
except for the reward but hey
it's all about the context
so get on with the plot.

Huzzah, get on with the plot!

Now look at you startled
the brain implant cartridge
has not been swapped which
was all part of the plan.

A world has been rescued
that he did detest who'd
have guessed I attest you'd
have done just the same.

So if you still want to force
me to do stupid chores
like washing the dishes
do the trash and such you'll
just prove that you haven't paid
attention to what i said
the message at core is... like...erm..
Huzzah... as a rule.

Huzzah the chorus guys rule!"

NOT The End.

If you love point and clicks, then this fun little point and click game is for you!

It's realitively short, has many challenges and hidden features and epic character voice overs! Oh and did I mention you can even pause cinematics, what more could you want?

Also has a fantastically funny storyline and epic scenery... plus it has awesome songs at certain parts of the game!

Overall, I highly recommend this if you have a few hours to kill and I guarrantee after you play it, you'll be getting the sequels to find out what happens next in the storyline.

PS: The major flaw in this game is that it has little to no replay value.

Three minutes into the game, tears man; tears!!! I was laughing so hard I couldn't catch my breath. The game takes me back to my childhood. Similar to Monkeys Island the game has a funny story that keeps you going throughout the GamePlay. Main character of the game Ruffes is a story of its own. Clumsy, maniacal, stubborn guy that has a neck for getting in to trouble yet he desperately tries to "save" the love of his life and get his happy ending. Mini games are also something worth mentioning. They are fun to play and give you a little brainless break from your main adventure. Last but not least is the music that follows you into every chapter of the game and stays in your head for days after ending this game. Deponia is a great game and I can't wait to finish the whole trilogy. The game still has a lot of room for improvement so I'm going to give it 6/10.

My review.
Pros:
-you never know what stupid thing he will come up with next.
-kid friendly.(as long as they know not to attempt anything that he does)
-a great time waster.

Cons:
-if you follow logic .... it doesnt. So for half the game, try to think of cartoons.
-if you have a problem with frustrations, prone to headaches, and or rage quit s, you might want to stay away
I finished, I dare you to do the same.

P.S. dont buy it unless on sale

Make sure to play the whole trilogy! A good-hearted german approach of delivering an epic storyline stretching over three full point-and-click-adventure games. Daedalic at its best i'd say!

I wanted to like this game because of the funny humour. However, I had to constantly go to google to find a guide to help solve the time-consuming, boring and dull puzzles.

This game is so "funny" I can't stand it. Not quite "ha ha" or "heh" funny ... more like "your screaming 9 year old nephew wrote the dialog while eating a 50 lb bag of cotton candy and leaving sticky fingerprints all over your screen and spilling soda in your keyboard, and maybe someday we'll look back at this and laugh".

I was excited for this game given the obviously high art quality and ratings, but I made it through the tutorial and first scene and could stomach no more. As some people have mentioned, the puzzles were harder than many other contemporary adventure games, but they were far from impossible and roughly on-par with the old classics. The only positive thing I can say about the gameplay is that the solutions to the puzzles were actually amusing, and require you to behave like the horrible person the protagonist is trying to be.

Maybe I'll take a deep breath and try again soon.
