Online Multiplayer is now in Open Beta!!

Hello fellas!

Hero Siege has reached a really cool milestone today! We are proud to announce that the online Multiplayer is now in Open Beta! The mode is no longer tied to the DLC and is now in a stable state.

There are still minor de-syncs, but we are hammering those out on a daily basis.

There is also a week till the release of "Depths of Hell" -Expansion set for the game!

Multiplayer to open BETA


So if it didn't already come clear, I am sorry. The Multiplayer mode will exit EA and become a part of the game on the 1st of May 2015.

This means that every player who has bought the game, is now able to play the MP mode. We do have to limit access between players who own DLC's to their own tab, but everyone is able to host vanilla games that anyone can join.

Anyway just dropped by to announce this, cheers :)

Great game i really enjoy the singleplayer, but when it comes to prices and multiplayer i just think to myself "wtf this is a ripoff bigger then EA even can imagine!"

Well yeah, bought the 4 Pack yesterday just to find out that you have to buy 4 copys of the DLC extra to get the multiplayer feature for you and your friends, which makes a total price of 20+4*3€ = 32€ buying the 4 pack and 4 times the normal DLC or 40€ buying the 4 pack and 4 times the CE DLC.

But the fact the devs sell a 4 pack which does not contain an multiplayer is not enough since there are also collectors editions for the DLC´s which are a bit more expensive (who the ♥♥♥♥ even sells Collectors Edition DLC´s?!!!) I mean its theyr good right to do so but its totally not a fair deal for the customer since the Multiplayer is an extra paid not even close to finished product. Even the singleplayer is not even close to be done now.

On my and my friends playtime of like 15 Hours we came across aprox 10 different and constantly repeating crashes, glitches and not so heavy bugs. Just to name some...

"You can move other players through walls" SP+MP
"You can crash an server by visiting an shop" SP+MP
"You sometimes cant finish puzzles and have to restart the game" MP
"You can crash an server by visiting an Dungeon" SP+MP
"You can crash an server by using certan abilitys" SP+MP
"You can deny you friends loot by simply walking to the next area" (Missing feature "rdy check") MP
"You can only view your talent tree ingame where you have to clear the stage first to not get killed in the first place" MP
"Having an player who is not the host playing as nekromancer results in having about 30 summoned minions which are all fully functional and just ♥♥♥♥ everything on the map even you can only summon up to 6..." MP <-- Works also with Archer and his Turrets
Classes are not even close to be balanced" MP

And so on and so on, for me its still a nice little indie game with an really nice singleplayer!
But they never ever should have released an 4 pack on steam without putting an warning message that there are up to 20€ extra cost to play multiplayer with your friends!
Also i am aware that the multiplayer isnt finished yet but there are still things that need to be redone in singleplayer and in the menus in the first place. I really hope you devs keep focusing on fixing and bringing an good gaming experience instead of just printing money here. For me it simply looks like a Money cow which gets squezzed out till its empty and then getting droped.

My suggestions: wait for Mutliplayer to be fixed and some QOL changes then 10/10 Buy it even the prices are a bit high here, When the game gets finished it will be a good and worth game.

I find it really hard to recommend this game. I'm completely on the fence about it. I'm having fun playing it but there's just too many things wrong with it. It gets constantly updated and it seems every time there's a serious flaw someone writes it off as "I'm sure the devs will fix it eventually!". What people don't seem to realise is that this game isn't early access. This is a complete game. So any flaws in its design are absolutely relevant.

My biggest gripe is with this game's difficulty. I'm all about hard games. I've clocked in hundreds of hours in Dark Souls 1 and 2 and have played my fair share of roguelikes. I'm a huge fan of the genre. But the difference is when you die its your fault. You get right back up and learn from your mistakes. This game, however, throws that out the window. It's difficult for the wrong reasons. I chose a marksman and granted I know they're a bit squishy but dear god half of what hits me just outright kills me. A lot of the creatures deal a pretty decent amount of damage and they drop health orbs when they die. That is until there's a boss or some kind of special monster. Every single boss I fight outright kills me in a single hit. Every. Single. Boss. Even the very first one. The difference in difficulty between the first and third boss I fought was nonexistant. They're completely random so hope to god you're fighting a melee boss because if he's ranged or has an AOE of any type at all then you may as well just jump off a cliff and save yourself the trouble. The problem with this is my marksman is level 20 and I'm still in the first act and STILL GETTING KILLED IN ONE HIT! Now I have played the melee classes a bit and they're not much less squishy. I find myself dying just as much. The first few levels of your character you may as well be throwing tissue paper at the enemies because you're not gonna do jack. Your best bet is to just lead the enemies to traps until your leveled up enough to get the one or two important skills that'll win you the game. Just don't get hit! By anything! Ever! Also every point you put into defense only raises damage reduction by .2%. So unless you invest a ridiculous amount of points into it, it's not going to help you at all. Skill points add a very negligible benefit to your character.

The online multiplayer is absolute garbage at this point. Online multiplayer is in its alpha stage and you can definitely see it when you play. Joining games is a hit and miss. 90% of the time I join one the game just freezes for 2 minutes and just takes me back to the main lobby. That and sometimes the lobby says certain games have a negative amount of players in them (-1/4) or completely lie about the ping. All this I can understand. It's hard to just add in online multiplayer. It's a huge thing. The only reason I'm mentioning it is because you guys deserve to know its current state. My only real concerns about it are two-fold. Multiplayer is ESSENTIAL to beating this game and YOU HAVE TO BUY DLC JUST TO PLAY ONLINE! That's right. You have to purchase a $3 or $5 dlc just to play this game's god-awful online multiplayer. I'm thankful I bought this when it was on sale because I feel horrible for the people that actually paid full price for this mess. This sort of business strategy just infuriates me.

I actually like this game's graphics and sound design. The music is fitting, the pixel-art is decent and stylized pretty well and the sound effects are great which is a lot more important than people might imagine. In a game where you're fighting huge waves of enemies it's imperative that you make it feel good to kill things. Enemies explode in a satisfying pile of gore and it sounds great! However.. this game has some of the worst voice acting I have ever heard. The writing is god-awful and it sounds like the same guy did the voices for everyone. This game does not need voice acting. There's no story. Dialogue is completely useless. Voice acting is one of those things that you either get right or just not have at all and I think this game would actually do far better if the characters just grunted or screamed rather than have full lines of dialogue.

All in all, will you enjoy this game? Probably. It is a lot of fun. I've been craving a diablo-like multiplayer arena game for a long time and this one fulfills that desire. It's hard to find good things about it with all that's wrong with it though but something keeps bringing me back. Maybe you'll enjoy this type of game. If you can put up with the awkward difficulty then I'd say you'll probably like it too.

Brutally difficult dual-stick shooting done addictively right!

Two things first:
1) This is a singleplayer review. If you're curious about multiplayer, read another review.
2) I didn't really care for Binding of Isaac, was moderately engaged by Hammerwatch, but mostly don't dabble in dual-stick shooters. What attracts me to this game is how it demands players to strive to a high level of skill while still maintaining the unforgiving difficulty that characterizes classic roguelikes. You're gonna die a lot and it's gonna suck, but the juice is worth the squeeze.
3) If you're ♥♥♥♥♥ing about not being able to shoot diagonally, I recommend you play a SNES game or two and suck it up, big boy.


- Wide variety of monsters and bosses, with nice touches of randomized customizations
- Surprisingly large selection of fully developed character classes
- One metric @#$%-ton of chievies (yeah, c'mon, nobody's going to play 150 hours)
- Sweet procedurally generated level designs with a delicious crunchy pixel-art style
- Loads of relics, potions, and blessings, with a well-integrated dungeon shop

CONS / Devs, please take note:

- Bosses are pretty uneven. Sometimes you'll get hulking brutes you can easily down, sometimes you'll get one-shotted instantly. Would be nice if they were a bit easier, but maybe it gets a bit more reasonable after leveling up a bit.
- PLEASE PUT IN A MINIMAP. I absolutely @#$%ing hate being chased around the map by the last monster of a wave just because I want to find that statue or dungeon that spawned. It's not a huge fix, won't break the game, and trust me, a lot of people will really appreciate it.

~~ Note for Roguelike Aficionados ~~
Stats and skills carry over after death (except temporary boosts, of which there are many varieties). I know what you're thinking, "Son, I am disappoint! I raised you to be a godlike 1337 rogue hardcore permadeath maximum difficulty pro, not some respawning filthy casul!" That's what I thought too, at first. Then after my 50th death without even getting to the second stage (and with a fair bit of skill, mind you!), I realized that I needed those XP levels to just... stick with me. You can probably guess that it does turn into a bit of a grind at that point, but that's where the game's charm kicks in.

Each character class has 4 unique abilities to learn and over twice as many passive skills. I tried the Viking and the Pirate, but ended up playing as a Pyromancer who I named "Solitary Eye". There is something distinctly gratifying about kiting around a bunch of high level monsters who could kill you in 3 or 4 hits and then igniting the ground around you in an enormous inferno while you spray jets of fire from your fingers at the largest beasts and summon meteors to crash down all around from the heavens... and they all die at once. You get XP, wade around in some blood, maybe grab a health orb if you're lucky (you won't need 'em though, you dangerous kiting expert, you), and pray for some of the more powerful basterds to drop keys.

Keys: keys are what you want. But be warned, having a bunch of keys and then finding no loot caves or chests to open, then getting merked by a stray lightning bolt you weren't paying attention to... that's gonna tick you off. A lot. Especially when you find 3 chests in your next play through and no keys. The loot dungeons, puzzle (and insanely dangerous) dungeons, and crypts filled with coins or crazy bosses... mayne, they're just really sexily implemented.

If you DO play the game in hardcore mode, you're probably Steven Hawking. Get a life.

~~ Opinionated Stance ~~
I waited until this game was on sale to buy it because I am below the poverty line. If I were more financially privileged, I would buy this at full price with no hesitation. I don't know much about the devs other than that this is a port that used to be based on a cash shop, but if they manage to smooth out the remnants of cash shop grind features, I would happily buy the DLC as well.

This game had a lot of potential, however, where the potential is there, it has been squandered.

Hero Siege is a mix between Binding of Isaac and the class system of Risk of Rain. Hero Siege is targeted as a randomly generated evironment, and its gameplay is played in waves.

Where you may be playing the game, you may think that it is very fun, but then, out of nowhere, you are instantly killed. From here, the problems start. The game has a great build system, unfortunately, youll find putting more of your stats into health and armor is better then anything else. The game starts to become a huge grind to level as your character struggles to keep up in damage to the enemies you face in the waves. At times, there is too much of a gap inbetween the enemies DPS and your DPS. Another problm is HP in that the increase does not scale well to the DPS intake from enemies.

The game relies heavily on the player gathering relics to have a fighting chance. Unfortunately, relics typically are only found in dungeons, crypts and shops mid-round. To new players, crypts and dungeons often have enemies that are of higher level and have higher DPS than you do and it is not uncommon to be cornered and die to the swarm. The bosses in each of these locations can also one shot you unexpectedly, such as, Annie for example.

At the end of a chapter there is a throne dungeon, it is in these dungeons I discovered the most game breaking bug of all. Save manipulation. My guide on it is here.

After the player finishes the game, the game displays a message that the player has unlocked the next difficulty, but for many players, the difficulty does not unlock. There have been cases of players characters deleting themselves on updates, and lost data when playing.

The DLC, Karp of Doom, adds little to the game. It is a Japanese-esque inspired chapter and it adds multiplayer to the game. Yes, multiplayer is paid for.

I do not recommend this game, get BoI and RoR, you'll like them far more and not be frustrated in a bad purchase.

I bought this when there were just a few classes, no runes, and the game looked hella old. Now, there are a few more classes, the game looks INCREDIBLE, and it's all a very solid experience. Each class is unique , making you adapt a new style of play for each and every one. The enemies are challanging , but not too challanging. The dungeons can be randomly be impossible to beat depending on your class, but that's no biggie. They are CONSTANTLY updating the game and making it better . I play this occasionaly , and nearly every time I log on there is something new or it looks just a little bit better. I highly recommend getting this. It's a nice game to kill some time (while waiting for queues in WoW) , or it can become challanging and intense if you choose to push forward to later levels.

8/10 , solid.

Hero Siege is a mixture between Diablo-like and rogue-like games, presented in a retro art style. The player basically fights hordes of monsters that arrive in waves. Every sixth wave consists of a boss monster. The game is organized similar to Diablo with acts (one act includes 30 waves) and different difficulty settings (up to Inferno). Each character can learn up to four active skills which are organized in a skill tree with several more passive ones. Most characters play quite differently and require various play styles and tactics.
I got this game as a present from my brother who wanted to play the newly implemented multiplayer mode with me. Thus, I have never tried the hot seat option. First of all, in order to access the multiplayer (panic net) every player has to purchase the DLC and gets notified that the DLC is merely in alpha phase. This shows! After a few deaths and subsequent ressurections our characters were completely messed up. Both looked the same and used the same skill set, even though they were different characters when we started the game. On one occasion my brother had to complete the stage alone, because I was outside the arena and unable to enter.
The game is very difficult and I cannot comprehend how some people are able (or supposed) to beat the game with hardcore characters. Skill is more important than anything else (perceivable) and the most important part is movement. In this regard the game is optimized for gamepads.
HS is actually so difficult that it borders on the point of being broken. There often is not a clearly discernible reason why you just died instantly, even though your character was able to take many hits beforehand. I appreciate a challenge, but it has to be a fair one.
One of the more recent updates removed most achievements. I considered it a great idea to reward the player for nearly everything (e.g. playing for a certain amount of time), because it created the illusion of progress. Now it feels like content was removed - which is not the case, but the game feels a lot more repetitive and pointless now.
Hero Siege shines the brightest as a funny multiplayer game, but is (especially in this regard) not optimized and can be very buggy at times. The repetitive nature of the game concept does not value replayability.

It's not a bad game, but it's just too much grinding and too unbalanced.

You can enter a dungeon in the first level and encounter enemies with 10k+ health while you deal around 50 damage per hit. While you don't have to enter dungeons it's the best chance of finding artifacts other than defeating the boss enemies every 5-6 waves. So it's a real gamble if you will be able to survive the dungeon or just end your run that way. I choose the viking as my first character and got an archer skeleton as my minion. The minion AI is horrible or better almost non existent. He doesn't follow you, but instead wanders around aimlessly. Yet he does 4-5 times as much damage as I do. So I lure the enemies to him and hide behind him while he shoots the enemies (and bosses). I pretty much just gather coins and revive him if he dies.

When you level up you get 2 stat points which can increase your attack-per-second speed in the 0.01-0.02 range each point, your damage around 1 point, your armor percentage rating around 0.1% or your health for around 30-40 points. Investing in health seems to be the only viable option. It's a lot of grinding to gain a level and you only get a very minimal increase in you stats for that. You can find potions that increase your stats for this run, but they are randomized each run so you never know what a potion does until you try it for the first time. Of course there are a lot of potions with negative effects too so again it's just gambling.

The presentation is nice yet simple. The different level have their unique setting and there's a good amount of different enemies. Some of the bosses are much harder to defeat than others and again it's completely random which one you'll encounter. Only the amount of hit points changes depending in which level you face them.

Overall it's not a bad game, but it just doesn't feel balanced enough to be engaging. You can hit a lucky streak and get quite far or you'll just hit a brick wall in the first level. It's not skill, but pure luck.

No matter how addictive Hero Siege may seem at start, it is a really bad game for several reasons. It is a perfect example of a typical, badly executed rip-off game.
Most of the features, as well as assets, have been taken from "The Binding of Issac" and "Diablo 2". Alright - I can understand taking "inspiration" (even of THIS scope) from other games, but even rip-offs have to be executed properly. The features have to be adjusted to the game and fit it properly. This is not the case of Hero Siege. The game is terribly unbalanced. The developers don't really seem to understand systems they "borrowed" from other games, like the Isaac'ish stat system which relies on pills (potions in this case) and other power-ups, the specific Diablo'ish talent tree, or some cosmetic elements like graphics or even sounds from TBOI. Hero Siege has a very inconsistent style. Some graphics don't fit the rest, because they're based of graphic elements from other games (like some monsters from TBOI, or charms from Diablo 2). There are also many aspects that simply don't fit the overall theme of the game, like the heavy religion references taken straight from The Binding of Isaac (religion is the main theme in TBOI) which don't seem to make any sense in Hero Siege. Going back to gameplay flaws, there are also a lot of minor issues and glitches that make the game even more off balance. On top of that, it has a very low replayability value, unlike most roguelikes and games with roguelike elements. It gets very repetitive, the procedural generation is minimal and the only thing that keeps you from quitting is a somewhat nice diversity of classes.
Even though Hero Siege has so many serious flaws - it has potential, because The Binding of Isaac and Diablo 2 are very good games. It can still become better in the future, if the developers put some more thought to content and features they steal from games mentioned above. I enjoyed the hours I spent in the game after all. This said, I still can't recommend Hero Siege at its current state.

Hero Siege is a game heavily inspired by Diablo and others. You play as one of many classes and beat waves after waves of Enemies until you finish the game. There are relics which increase some of your powers, various temporary items which are lost upon death which give stats or skills, statues that increase your stats permanently and potions with temporary buffs/debuffs. The game tends to be fun, however it takes time to get used to controls and the chaos going on. It depends a lot on luck and lucky generation of items, or else you're going to die for sure and restart all over again. Once you get a hang of it, it becomes fun but a bit boring as you're so strong it's no longer a challenge. Be wary after finishing a game on one difficulty you restart with no items on the next diff.

(DLC with acts and rest of the game should be free, collector's edition should be the purchase to support the developer rather than having it all paid for)

It was a great game back when it 2014 but they removed maybe 80% of the achievements so people who spent a lot of time getting the achievements have wasted their time getting them.
The updates are doing more bad than good to this game, it's worse every single update.

Back in 2014 I would've give it a 8.5/10 but now I feel like it deserves a 5/10.

Obviously, the game is not finished and very raw. Likewise, I certainly feel absolute disrespect of developers to their players.

First and foremost, the game is full of bugs. At every step, at every option you can run into a bug and lost hours of playing, joy, and temper. A lot of crushes, disappearing of items, random generation collisions, menu bugs, ...

The second thing is gameplay dis-balance. In fact, there are no any balance. It's a mess of features, monsters, skills, ... Some of skills are totally useless, some of character's features can easily kill any monster or boss. Items are random and it means that in some cases you won't have keys to open a door and no chance to get it. Likewise, you can occasionally get extremely powerful item in the beginning or completely loss some of skills (for example, speed in two times).

The third one is the graphic. Some people name it pixel. But it is not a pixel. It's a collection of schoolboy scribbles. There are no any style, clutter of colours, discrepancy everywhere, total disproportion of everything, ... This mess really hurts my eyes.

The fourth one is the music and the sound. I suppose it's personal, but I couldn't play with music and sound of the game. I turned it off. It's hard for me. I know a few people who like music like that, but it's not my cup of tea.

From my perspective, the best description of the game is the trash. Total Trash. (it's not bad or good, maybe you like trash)

I really tried to understand the game, but I failed. Sorry.

I hadn't heard or seen anything of this game. And then it was on sale and a couple friends of mine got it. It was quite cheap, looked interesting and so I gave it a try.

And what can I say? I've since gifted it to my brother and played three hours straight in multiplayer with him (you'll need to get the DLC to have access to the MP alpha). I absolutely love this game!
It is easy to get into but almost impossible to master. I still honestly don't know how one should ever be able to get the hardcore achievements as I see ourselves dying so damn often.

This game is basically Diablo in 2D. And it's absolutely not at the same time!
I tried all classes and they all play quite differently. They can be divided into melee (can take quite a punch) and ranged classes (glass cannon). But that's just the basic (in terms of how far does your "attack" reach). Further more every class has something making it unique like summoning minions of dead corpses with the necromancer or doing more damage on your next attack when having walked a bit since the last one with the nomad etc..
Each act is composed of several "stages" of the same setting (like the first act being the forest in different taints, then the castle garden and then the castle). The second one is a snow theme (we just finished the first act, so not much more I can tell about the rest).
So you fight waves of enemies in these "arenas". Sometimes (I think when you call the next wave early but I
m not sure) there are "drops" like crypts, dungeons, vendors and so on. These make for a nice change of scenery and gameplay (as they are more riddle focused than slaying monsters).

All in all I am very excited what's there to come in further DLCs. This seems like the first game I really want to have all DLCs of because they add something new to the game and not just gimmicks.

One would expect game advertising to have "Ful controller support" to have it.

On OS X it does not.

I feel weird about this game: I hate it but I can't stay without coming back to play it again. Although it still quite bugged and it has a random factory that will make you freaking mad at some points, it is definitely the best rogue-like that I ever played. Give it a try.. or two.. or maybe more. The game becomes much more enjoyable after some time playing it.

First off, this review is purely for local coop. I bought the game due to my love for rougelikes and local coop games. I cannot speak for the multiplayer features as of yet. If you are thinking of purchasing this game because it has local coop, heed my warning:

As I've heard many people say, this game has great potential, but for a game that has been out for nearly a year (and has DLC), there are too many inexcusable bugs and problems.

The Bugs:
Local coop is riddled with issues. So much so, I can't recommend this game for coop play. Multiplayer may be a different story. Here are the bugs I ran into in my short 4 hours of local play time:

- Player 2 does not retain charms, but Player 1 does. Charms are the only retained items in the game. This leaves you severally crippled later on in the game as the charms (especially the rarer ones) help you immensely. We were too afraid to switch the character in the player 1 slot to the player 2 slot in fear the character would lose their charm, so we have always kept one character charmless.

- Players will have their stats and/or attributes reset and randomly rolled! After about an hour of consistent game time, I loaded up another round and I suddenly realized my characters stats and skill points were redistributed. Every time this happened I had to spend 30 gems to reset. As far as I can tell, you only get these gems when you get achievements, meaning they are a limited resource and eventually I won't have a solution to this bug!

- Players can get other players stuck in dungeon/crypt puzzles, causing you to have to reset the game. Careful where you stand when figuring out the puzzles, if another player hits the reset button, you could find yourself stuck in a pillar. (stay out of dungeons)

- Dead teammates are your worse enemy. Players can die in too many inconvenient spots. Since you can't walk over dead teammates, you are assured the same fate (i.e. a flame wheel kills your teammate in front of you, you can't move past it and you can't go back because the flame is already on its way back. Any last words?). This happens more often than you would think. (stay out of dungeons)

That was what I found in ~4 hours of local coop. If these bugs were resolved, the game would be much more enjoyable and I would absolutely recommend it. However, I can't recommend it in terms of local coop. There are also several general game play issues I'll lay out below.

General Gameplay thoughts:
The first thing you'll notice playing Hero Seige, is you die way too often without even knowing what hit you. The maps are fairly detailed. Couple that with the bit graphics and it can be quite the challenge to see a tiny red ball one-hit kill you. Some may enjoy this challenge. As an avid fan of rougelikes, it is always a good day to die. But I found it somewhat aggravating suddenly realizing you are dead, with no explanation. If the kill screen didn't tell you what killed you, most of the time you'd have no idea. These instantaneous deaths come quick and often, especially with bosses (which spawn every 6th wave).

Speaking of bosses, their difficulty is incredibly random and unpredictable. It has charm and replay-ability, but it can often crush what seemed like a good run, leaving you somewhat discouraged. Once in coop, we were having a great run, when suddenly a boss spawned and immediately killed my friend and I using his laser ability (pretty sure that was a bug as boss skills visibly charge up). The same goes for the randomly generated dungeons and crypts. Deaths happen so quickly without explanation. I don't recommend venturing forth into the unknown without leveling up a bit.

The character progression is ungodly slow. This is somewhat understandable considering there is no max level. But without the addition of charms and relics you won't notice a difference between character levels.

Despite all those complaints, the rest of the gameplay is exciting and entertaining enough that it is probably worth the $5 if you want to play singleplayer. It plays well on a controller, though It would make more sense that each of the four skills is a button, rather than the trigger scrolling. The variety of enemies, obstacles, and traps keeps the replay value high.

For now, the game is too buggy to recommend for cooperative play. If the devs up their game, I'll reconsider my review.
