Love this game still looking for more like it for PC! The PC controls actually worked and weren't too akward, the option to have english subtitles and original audio really speaks to me.

Recommend this to any JRPG turn based fans out there, you will not regret it.

I originally started this game on the 360 but never was able to finish it, partially because of the ridiculously skewed leveling system and partially due to a red ring of death. Despite my inability to get past a boss fight around 80 percent of the way through the game, I really enjoyed it, so I was glad to see this game on Steam.

I was even more glad when I started to play TLR again and realized a couple of things: it's a lot easier if you understand the skewed leveling system (and I'll get to that in a second) and the PC version has made a lot of interesting quality of life improvements to the game. Really, it feels like the only thing missing from the PC version is... achievements. (Okay, actually, my other complaint would be that whomever did the cutscene animation has apparently never watched a living person walk before because the modeling is terrible but -- that's minor.)

So back to the leveling system. TLR is really interesting in that it removes all control from the player in terms of leveling characters and, to a certain extent, control over a character's actions in battle. So while the lack of control will take some getting used to I actually think the battle system is really fun, if unique. The leveling system, however, causes problems. Essentially TLR has two leveling stats: individual units/character stats (which the game auto-levels/assigns for you) and battle rank, which levels your entire party/army. What I didn't realize the first time I tried the game on the 360 was that having a high battle rank is... actually really bad. The higher the battle rank, the longer it takes for stat increases and the harder the enemies are to beat (to the point where if you have too high a rank, like I did, a boss battle literally becomes a one-shot and completely impossible encounter). So, I'm definitely having a much better play-through on the PC because (a) the PC version seems to have reduced some of the connection between battle rank and difficulty and (b) despite how counter-intuitive it is to NOT level in a RPG, I've managed to keep my battle rank pretty low.

That said, the game has an interesting storyline (that I'm eager to finally finish) and is definitely a completionist's nightmare. The main questline is actually fairly short but there's a MILLION sidequests and a couple hundred challenge quests (e.g., kill a specific monter, find a particular item, gain a specific level, etc.) so there's a ton of stuff to do.

If you have a good 40-50 hours to kill, you like the idea of transhumanism, and you like SquareEnix, or just JRPGs, I definitely recommend this one.

The Combat system is full of random, but it turns out to be very fantastic. The story isn't attractive, but the characters are impressive. And it will be difficult for those who play at their first time.

Battle's are fun and startegic, battle pace can be adjusted to your liking, story keeps me interested, there's A LOT to do and the music is nice if not very memorable. Personally I really like it cause it's devoid of too much cuteness and plays very much like the jrpgs of times gone by. And the difficulty is high but the game still remains beatable. Try it, if you're into this genre!

The game feels like an experiment, and to me, it worked. A large roster of character, intricate story and gameplay. This is an unique rpg and worth a play if you can get it for a good price. You control and command squads and perform large scale fights rather than xv4 fights. The game is a turn by turn RPG in essence, but you quickly notices differences. You can have as much as 50 enemies on the field and have to make careful desision during combat. The indirect feeling of the gameplay may put off some of you, but i enjoyed the experience, i wish the compagny would take more chance and give us more of this.

An extremly well made J-RPG. It starts very conservative and slowly, but once it get rolling it is extremly awesome.
Cool characters - although the main character is a little bit annoying from time to time - , well-written story and a really complex fighting system, in which the battles are really intense. It look a bit like final fantasy, but it doesn't play that way. It has a unique moral system, which increases or decreases the damage of your unions, depending on how you position them, and how you perform actions. You can totally customize your union, and there is a huge amount of differenct characters, mercenarys, soldiers and questcharacters to choose from.
There a a lot of boss monsters, whom are very different from each other, and are most of the time really hard to actually beat.
The game looks absolutly stunning. The performance is extremly smooth, and i have yet to find a place, where i have lags or where the games stutters.
It is pretty unique and an experiment which you either love or hate.
Be prepared, the game is not easy, and if you don't plan ahead in a fight, you will find yourself loading the last save file.
However i would definitly recommend playing this game with a Xbox Controller. Although the keyboard layout is pretty good, you have to first activate the tooltips to show the keyboard-commands instead of the gamepad commands.
Some reviews have claimed, that you cannot skip cutscenes, which is rather bullocks. Pause the game, and then there is an option to skip them (on the Xbox-Controller Start+Back).

All-in all in my honest opinion, i think this game is absolutly brilliant. It has the classic J-RPG feel, with a very complex combat system, an incredibly well written story ( i am not even half through and it has already blown me away), and stunning graphics. And although there are some annoyances with the keyboard commands, i would definitly recommend this game to everyone who loves J-RPGs or who always wanted to play one. It is under my Top 5 of my favourite RPGs and that means a lot.

Good game, made in the same fighting style of final fantasy with a completely separate story line. I can see me getting into it for many more hours...just dont do what I did first time around and forget to save xD

Not the worst JRPG you've played, but it's the most frustrating and annoying of them...
-Keyboard+mouse controls... looks like people who ported the game saw K+M for the first time in their lives, gamepad is strongly recommended.
-VERY limited control of your units. Every turn you have 5 random options to chose from and thats it. You might have no option to heal when you're desperately in need of it and you might be screwed even if you have it cause you can heal with ITEMS or MAGIC or both and you will get the one which isn't so powerful.
-No matter what, your weakest union WILL be gangraped 99% of the time, every monster on the field wants their blood.
-Monster AOE spells are overpowered beyond belief, even the weakest monster in the area (~same level as you) can onesot your party in 1 turn. Lets say normal monster attack hits for 100, singletarget ability hits for 300, AOE ability hits for 300 every unit in your union, which will result in 1500 damage on 5ppl... Some BIG monsters can AOE multiple unions and erase your party in a single spell... and they will cast it FREQUENTLY.
-You can't surrender, so if you're trying to beat a very strong rare enemy and it destroys half or your units on the first turn... you must watch the other half die, sometimes very slowly.
-You CAN'T skip cutscenes. After some cutscenes you will be immediately thrown into battle, and if you lose it... load your save and watch 5+ min cutscene again.
-You can equip only your main protagonist, others can only request some components and RARELY items from your inventory, so you can sit on a pile of top gear and no ability to use it. It's not a huge minus anyway, cause all you have is main/offhand weapon and 2 accessory slots.
-Though locations are pretty unique and well done you will be forced to visit them over and over again if you want to complete sidequests or hunt for rare monsters for the guild. Every quest teleports you to corresponding location and teleports back to tavern IMMEDIATELY after it's completion.
-The world and lore are really interesting, but the story feels like it's written for the 12 y/o. This "flaw" can be seen in almost every Japanese game (atleast in my experience) and can be forgiven.
-Battle system is pretty good for a JRPG, but it's very annoying that you can't skip battles with weak monsters when revisiting old locations.
I'd give it 6/10, but put a huge red FRUSTRATION WARNING on it.

I personally think The Last Remnant had a lot going for it, I'm a sucker for Square's fantasy aesthetic and the whole command entire squads instead of single characters. It was on the right track with the battle system, but I feel it dropped the ball on how little customizability you had and the how the scaling difficulty makes the game neigh unbeatable if you levelled up your soldiers too much. As much as I actually like it I wouldn't recommend The Last Remnant for anyone other than diehard jrpg fans like myself that find the genre woefully underrepresented on steam. Now I excuse me as I pray to lord Gaben to bless us filthy masses with Lost Odyssey.

This might be one of the most innovative Final Fantasies ever made.

The biggest thing to recommend, if you tried it on the Xbox, the insane load times have been dropped. On a decent computer a battle loads in a few seconds (on the first release on the 360 load times easily exceeded over a minute for battles that might last 10 seconds).

Play it in Japanese with English subtitles if you are like me, that is, if you hate campy English dubs. The English voice acting is awful at most points. The Japanese is way better. I'm only saying yes for recomendation right now since I haven't gotten far into the game.

i love turned based jrpg's, more specifically my favorites are lost odyssey, and final fantasy 7 crisis core. the problem here is that i mostly feel like this is all fights and story and i would like more free roam. i know i didnt give it much of a chance, but having a billion other games on steam it just wasnt enough to suck me in. i know this is an older game but the graphics still seemed kind of harsh for even there time period. i know this isnt a very good review since ive only played about 2 hours, i just wanted to give my opinion on it.

I'll make it short.
Dialogues are poor.
Main character is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Either trust me or go see it yourself.
Combat system is somewhat interesting, but for someone who likes strategy games and likes think about tactics - Remnant's combat is BS.
There really is nothing in this game.

This game isn't even worth the ♥♥♥♥ing 9 dollars it costs...you try to build a party at a guild...then you go into a certain map, and that party is NO WHERE TO BE FOUND! So you take on these stupid quests with townsfolk...you end up in a dungeon with said townsfolk...with your party NO WHERE TO BE FOUND. Beating side quests seems impossible. Where did my ♥♥♥♥ing party go once I assigned them at a guild? WHERE?! Is this one of those games you have to grind for hours in a low level area to be able to take on side quests? I mean where is my ♥♥♥♥ing party!? I assigned them at a guild! WHY AREN'T THE IN MY PARTY?!

Don't play this. It's only a few years old but the graphics seem circa 2001...there is only voice acting during cut scenes...the rest you have to READ! Imagine, an xbox360 game where you have to read the ♥♥♥♥ing quest dialogue...pathetic.

Edit: I found out how to take the party you create into a map...but that didn't make the experience much better...this game requires old school exp grinding to make it anywhere. I find myeslf dying from one group of regular monsters...despite fully understanding the combat system. It's just a really unbalnced game. I ground for hours to beat ONE rare boss mob in an early cave area. Still impossible to beat it. I understand the combat....my characters are well leveled. This game got very good reviews when it was first released...I have a feeling the company that made this game paid handsomely to get these positive reviews...something big companies are known to do.

Dated graphics for a 2009 release, minimal voice acting...strange unbalanced combat system...zero phsycis, Completely linear, Trite, cliche story...forgetable characters, mandatory exp grinding and a whole host of other problems. Androgenous heroes. ♥♥♥♥, the females in this game look more manly than the males...I don't need a ♥♥♥♥ing lesson in androgeny. Square Enix, has lost their luster...and then some. When the company was Squaresoft...they were shining. This game is a clear example of how Squaresoft sold out. Don't believe me? Pay the 9 dollars yourself and find out.
