“Xenonauts is still in development and will continue to receive free updates until it is fully complete. Most of the key features are already in place and the game can certainly be played in its current state, but it has a few rough edges, such as inconsistent game balance, placeholder UI elements and the occasional missing art assets. You may also encounter bugs/crashes. We are working hard to solve all of these issues and *hope* to have the final game ready later this year.

This project is a huge undertaking for an indie studio but by purchasing an Early Access copy, you are adding more funds to our development pot and helping us improve the final product. It saves you some money too, as we will be raising the price of the final game for release!

Finally, be aware that each major update will be incompatible with save games from earlier versions! ”

V21 Stable Released (& how to recover saves)!

We've just released a major update for Xenonauts, V21 Stable, which contains all of the changes made on our Experimental branch in the past three months.

This will break all existing save games. If you want to continue your existing V20 playthrough, please follow the instructions in this thread.

As you might imagine, a very large number of changes have been made to the game. You can find them all in this thread on our forums, but a few key changes have been highlighted below:

  • Lots of bugfixes
  • New loading screen added to the game
  • Updated mission debrief screen added
  • Lots of new maps added for aliens bases / terror sites
  • Spangly new UFO interior graphics
  • Load / hidden movement waiting times improved
  • TU costs for moving and shooting lowered
  • Firing weapons now uses % of max TU, rather than static costs as before
  • Weapon types have been rebalanced to act more differently from one another
  • AI now improved, particularly regarding psionics
  • Aliens now have access to a plasma shotgun
  • Updated final mission
  • New Singularity Cannon end-game weapon added

We are now planning to spend the next ten weeks purely on fixing bugs, polishing and optimising the game and improving usability. If you want more details of that, then feel free to drop in on our official forums!

V20 Stable Hotfix Released!

Just a quick note to say we've pushed V20 Stable Hotfix to the Stable branch. There were a few issues in V20 Stable that needed fixing such as occasional crashes related to alien bases and the overly passive AI, but we've made those fixes and given them a good test now.

This update will not break save games, and if you've been experiencing crashes it may allow you to continue playing games that were previously crashing.

Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions.

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it!

Key Features

  • Ground Combat: Xenonauts delivers tense turn-based combat across realistic, varied and fully-destructible battlefields, against almost fifty different variants of enemy. Missions range from capturing crashed UFOs or alien bases to defending cities (or even Xenonaut facilities) against alien attack. You'll experience the chill of encountering a new alien for the first time and the joys of test-firing a new weapon for the first time. Deeply asymmetric combat keeps the battles interesting - after all, you're fighting intergalactic invaders with 1970's ballistic technology!
  • Strategic Management: You will also be managing the defence of the planet, dealing with the invading alien UFOs with your customisable interceptors. You need to balance the needs of your funding nations with your own. Your funds are limited - are you going to spend them on battlefield equipment, more scientists, or expanding your coverage of the planet? Your priorities must be balanced carefully if you are to win the war.
  • Research Tree: Xenonauts has an extensive research tree with almost a hundred projects to unlock, each with its own unique description and painted artwork. It slowly reveals the intentions and origins of the invaders, while also unlocking new battlefield equipment, aircraft and vehicles for you to use as you harness alien technology and turn it against them.
  • Persistent Soldiers: Soldiers in Xenonauts are persistent from mission to mission, improving their stats and gaining ranks with combat experience - but their deaths are always only a single bad move away. You will grow to care about the brave men and women under your command as they slowly grow from green rookies into hardened veterans, but that only makes it more painful when their heroic tale is cruelly cut short by a burst of plasma fire...
  • Detailed, Emergent Simulation: Xenonauts contains no scripted missions, just broad rules setting the pace of the invasion. As such, no game plays out the same twice. If you shoot a Scout UFO down over a polar area, you get a Crash Site mission where you can capture a crashed Scout UFO in an Arctic tileset. Commence a battle at night and you'll be fighting the mission in the darkness with reduced sight range. If your base is attacked, you fight the defence in a perfect replica of your base. A lot of time has gone into weaving the two very different halves of the game together into something that feels both natural and enjoyable.

Major Remaining Work to Do

  • General Balance & Pacing Improvement: Xenonauts is an extremely complicated, almost sandbox-esque game. It's a lot of effort to get it balanced, and we only started work on it recently!
  • Strategic UI Update: The UI of the strategic game is mostly placeholder and not very attractive. There is an update in the works that will make it more appealing (it will match our ground combat UI).
  • Air Combat Auto-Resolve: Not everyone likes playing our air combat minigame. We will add an auto-resolve feature prior to release so you have the choice.
  • Xenopedia Art: A large amount of the art has already been done, but not all of it.
  • AI updates: The AI is currently acceptable, but we want to add more advanced tactics and differentiate behaviours between different species more.
  • More Maps: The game has nearly 50 maps in it already, but they can get repetitive. We therefore will be adding a lot more.
  • Final Mission: The final mission has some scripting in it which is yet to be added, so it doesn't work properly.
  • Finishing Touches: There's also bound to be a lot of small improvements and updates to do to get the game working perfectly.

La parte strategica dedicata ai combattimenti ci catapulterà direttamente a metà degli anni ’90: ogni nostra unità sarà contraddistinta da diversi valori, tra cui forza, coraggio, mira e gli importantissimi punti azione. Sul campo, difatti, turno dopo turno potremo spendere tali punti per far muovere, sparare, lanciare granate, cambiare equipaggiamento e tutte quelle belle cose che -dovrebbero- evitare ai nostri amati omini di morire male. Purtroppo, e spero che sia colpa della beta, più volte sono rimasto basito davanti a qualche mossa fin troppo stupida delle unità nemiche, anche se ben “compensate” spesso e volentieri dal numero o dalla forza degli xenocosi. In compenso posso garantire che rischieremo un ictus per colpa della tensione che proveremo quando il computer farà le proprie mosse nell’oscurità e non potremo fare altro che sentire spari e grida. Anf.

Non temete, però, che non ci troveremo davanti ad un mediocre clone di un vecchio gioco famoso, ma potremo godere di una grafica assolutamente gradevole, una graditissima serie di novità enormi come il poter sfruttare veicoli terrestri durante le missioni e la divertente gestione dei combattimenti aerei: comanderemo il nostro squadrone di caccia, con una visuale stilizzata dall’alto, durante i pericolosi scontri aerei con le forze aliene in tempo reale, ma con la possibilità di mettere in pausa in qualsiasi momento per riorganizzare le idee e prepararsi a qualche manovra evasiva od offensiva.

Bellissima reincarnazione del vecchio X-COM,questo gioco migliora ad ogni aggiornamento che gli sviluppatori rilasciano (in media ogni 2/3 settimane)

Per chi ama i giochi tattico\strategici,con la gestione di fondi per il potenziamento della base operativa,assunzione di scenziati,soldati o acquisto di veicoli ecc.. non può lasciarselo scappare.

Xenonauts is a UFO:EU-inspired turn-based tactical strategy game set during the Cold War.

The game begins in 1979, when the player is tasked with leading a joint NATO/USSR task force formed in response to a mysterious alien threat. The player is responsible for managing every level of the organization, from constructing bases and researching new technology, to deploying and commanding fighters, to directing individual soldiers on the battlefield in turn-based combat.

Aesthetically, the game has a unique, classy visual identity, great sound design, and a superb soundtrack.

Gameplay-wise, the game is of course similar to its inspiration, X-COM (or UFO: Enemy Unknown), but with rebalanced combat, a vastly superior interface, added mechanics (such as suppression), and real-time air combat.

If you're a new player who was at some point intimidated by the original X-COM's initial lack of direction and micromanagement, or a fan of Firaxis' XCOM looking for a different experience, definitely give Xenonauts a try. It has all the depth and fun of the original X-COM but with almost all of the micromanagement stripped out and a clearer, more presentable interface.

If you're a UFO:EU vet, you'll find something new here. For instance, unlike in UFO, combat armor is extremely valuable, but also heavy, so if you want to follow the tried and true strategy of blowing everything up with C4 you'll have to pay for it in either survivability or mobility. Running out of ammunition can be a very real concern. Suppression and improved alien AI moves the gameplay away from massed reaction fire toward more dynamic "fire and maneuver"-style gameplay.

The best thing about Xenonauts is its ability to remain "faithful" to UFO:EU without feeling like a nostalgia-driven fan remake of an older game. Xenonauts is not afraid to make changes to the formula if they benefit the overall game, nor is it trying to "recapture" the greatness of its idol. Xenonauts wants to forge its own identity as a bleak, uncompromising, tense, occasionally terrifying strategy game. And it largely succeeds.

Very much recommended.

Did you love X-Com: UFO Defense? Do you wish X-Com: Enemy Unknown was more like UFO Defense? Xenonauts does a great job of capturing what we all loved about UFO Defense and TFTD, but like every UFO Defense clone it has missed the mark on atmosphere and setting. This is definitely top dog if you want a modern UFO Defense and blows its competitors out of the water (and is still being actively developed), but you might want to look in to Silent Storm instead if you're okay with a different setting (sci-fi World War 2)
