First news on version 1.1

Hello everyone!

While the news has been slow on our side for the past few weeks we’ve been discussing update 1.1 and we have some exciting news to share. Now that the Unity 5 update is nearly complete we put it through internal testing and found that we had made enough major changes that we wanted to share these with you a bit more quickly than we originally intended, so we’ve moved the 1.1 update forward.

This means that the scope of the update will be reduced slightly in favor of speeding up the release schedule. The Unity 5 update in itself brings major changes to many game systems, and delivers a very solid performance boost, via the new version of PhysX being able to multithread across your processor cores. Perhaps more importantly the Unity 5 update has proven to make the game far more stable on 64 bit platforms, meaning a 64 bit client for Windows and possibly Mac OSX is something we’re looking into very seriously for this update. Also part of the engine update are the overhauls of the UI, wheels and various other systems that you’ve been reading about in the dev notes.

Helping us accomplish this is modder extraordinaire NathanKell, who is new on the team and will be working closely with the existing developers to polish existing systems and implement new ones:

Aside from a new developer, performance increases, reworked systems and new platform support we’ll be adding new content to the game as well. Porkjet, RoverDude, Arsonide and NathanKell have been working on a number of features.

Highlights include:

  • New Parts
    The Mk1 cockpit has been reworked, not redesigned from the ground up, keeping the original style that we all enjoy and incorporating in real-life counterpart cockpit designs. The Mk1 parts that received an overhaul a while back are also being slightly reworked to bring them closer in style to the rest of the beautiful spaceplane parts that Porkjet has modeled.

    It doesn’t stop there with the spaceplane parts though, Porkjet has also been working on 0.625m jets and associated parts, as well as spicing up the Basic Jet Engine and Turbo Jet Engine. You’ll all be seeing more of that at a later date, as well as a few parts that are currently still being designed and developed.

  • Antenna Diversity and Probes
    A feature we’re sure you’re all familiar with by now, if not you should read this article. RoverDude is still hard at work further refining this feature and incorporating the feedback we received from you, the community. Onwards to QA from there!

  • Contextual Contracts
    Having Contracts that set full missions for you is great fun, but the real sense of achievement comes from watching something take shape and evolve over time. With Contextual Contracts, we’re hoping to provide the contracts KSP give you with a level of continuation from where you currently are in your space program. Therefore, instead of receiving endless contracts to build a base, you receive an initial contract and then additional ones to add a lab, for instance, or adjust a satellite to meet new requirements. We’re talking adding depth, not breadth to the contracts system, something we’re hoping improves the gameplay dynamic and furthers the potential that Career Mode allows players to have.

  • Localisation
    Lastly, we’re planning on adding the framework for localisation into the next update, paving the way for implementing localised versions of KSP. But more on that later!

Of course, a major engine update and these new features all require extensive QA testing. To bring this all together we will be focussing two or three weeks in QA purely on the engine update, after which the new features will also undergo testing and we’ll have a final part of testing focus on bugs in general to make sure we catch as many bugs as possible, both new and existing ones. All in all it will take us a while to finalize testing still, but we’re very happy to move forward and spend this time to provide a more stable and fluid experience for everyone.

In KSP you must build a space-worthy craft, capable of flying its crew out into space without killing them. At your disposal is a collection of parts, which must be assembled to create a functional ship. Each part has its own function and will affect the way a ship flies (or doesn't). So strap yourself in, and get ready to try some Rocket Science!

The game offers three gameplay modes: Sandbox, in which you are free to build anything you can think of; Science Mode, which lets you perform Scientific experiments to advance the knowledge of Kerbalkind and further the available technology; and Career Mode, in which you must manage every aspect of your Space Program, including administration strategies, Crew Management, Reputation, as well as taking up Contracts to earn Funds and upgrade your Space Center Facilities (or repair them).

Add to this the ability to capture asteroids (a feature done in collaboration with NASA), Mining for resources out across the furthest reaches of the Solar System, Constructing Bases and Space Stations in and around other worlds; plus literally thousands of mods from a huge active modding community, all add up into the award-winning game that has taken the space sim genre by storm.

Words alone cannot express how amazing KSP is.

To be honest, this is not a game for everyone. If you are in the market for some fast-paced "space combat sim" with all kinds of weapons and big explosions, then this isn't what you are looking for. (Except for the big explisions... KSP has you covered there).

However, if you ever dreamed of actually being an astronaut, this is definitely for you. If you sometimes forget to breath when watching recordings of the Apollo moon landings, this is definitely for you. If precise, measured flying; careful planning; and delta-v budgeting are what drives you, this is definitely for you. If you want to learn about Orbital Mechanics and are dying to know what the Oberth Effect or a Hofman Transfer Orbit are, this is definitely for you. If you like Physics, this is definitely for you.

Optionally, if you just like building rediculously large rockets and watching them explode with glorious comedy when they fail catastrophically because you forgot ONE PART... then this is also definitely for you.

Kerbal Space Program is challenging, fun, frustrating, mind boggling, huge, hilarious, complicated, deep, and just plain awesome.

KSP je jedna z nejlepších her co jsem hrál. Nemá žádný příběh. Jste to jen vy, vaše vesmírné středisko a celý solární systém k dobytí. Nečekejte žádnou arkádovku! KSP leží na pomezí hry a simulátoru. Očekávejte, že starty a celé lety budou probíhat velmi podobně tomu, jak to dělá NASA, ESA a další. Musíte dělat složité orbitální manévry, včetně dokování dvou objektů, což je považované za náročnější věc než přistání na Měsíci. Musíte pochopit fyziku, abyste se odlepili od země a dostali se skrz atmosféru.
Pokud se vám 10krát v řadě nepovede přistání na Münu (nejbližší měsíc), protože se rozplácnete, nepanikařte! Rozplácnutí je skvělý začátek a už jste neuvěřitelně blízko k vystoupení na povrch a umístění vaší vlajky. Po pár (desítkách) přistání už vám nebude dělat problém ani vzlétnout a vrátit se na domovskou planetu, Kerbin.
Pro začátek bych rozhodně doporučil zadat do YouTubu něco jako "How to make an orbit", "How to build a rocket", "How to land on Mun", protože jinak byste se mohli rychle vzdát a říct, že to prostě nejde.

Hra nemá žádný příběh, žádné cíle. Jen ty, které si vytyčíte vy sami a po jejich dokončení budete mít větší radost než kdyby to byl hrou daný cíl. Jakmile zjistíte že vám Mün nedělá potíže, můžete přistát na Minmusu (druhý měsíc Kerbinu), Duně, jejím měsíci Ike, Mohu, Eve s malým měsícem Gillym, na pěti měsících plynného obra Joolu, na vzdálené Eeloo. Přistání je hračka? Postavte si kolonii, orbitální stanici, všechno co vás napadne, protože tohle je KSP a vaší fantazii se zde opravdu meze nekladou. A pokud byste měli pocit, že už jste udělali všechno, podívejte se na oficiální fóra! KSP má jednu z nejlepších komunit, kterou jsem kdy poznal. Je tu spousta různých challengů, které vám řeknou, kolik jste toho ještě neudělali, reportů z misí, abyste získali inspitaci a nespočet módů, které přidají KSPčku další rozměr (robotické součástky, warpový pohon, nové planety, měsíce a mnohem, mnohem (a mnohem, mnohem, mnohem) víc).

Na KSP mám nahrané stovky hodin z doby, kdy jsem jí ještě neměl na steamu, splnil jsem jedny z nejtěžších cílů, přistál jsem v jedné misi na 5 měsících Joola, ale Kerbal stále hraji a nikdy mě nepřestane bavit. Začátky jsou tvrdé, ale pokud je překonáte, budete slintat blahem. Tuhle hru musím včele doporučit.
Pokud vás zajímá vesmír, fyzika nebo kosmické lodě, neváhejte. Tohle je ten nejlepší způsob jak to všechno poznat a pochopit. Mé hodnocení je 12/10.
