In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

Key Features:

  • Complex Strategic Gameplay - Give orders to your crew, manage ship power distribution and choose weapon targets in the heat of battle.
  • Play at Your Own Speed - Pause the game mid-combat to evaluate your strategy and give orders.
  • Unique Lifeforms and Technology – Upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien races.
  • Be the Captain You Want - Hundreds of text based encounters will force you to make tough decisions.
  • Randomized Galaxy - Each play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your decisions. No two play-throughs will be quite the same.
  • No Second Chances! - Permadeath means when you die, there's no coming back. The constant threat of defeat adds importance and tension to every action.

I love this game. I'm pretty new to the rougelike(-like) genre and I'm interested i playing more. I'm not very good yet. I can get across about three sectors but I'm slowly figuring out how to play with some strategy. I highly recommend FTL.

“Faster Than Light”, an indie game by Subset Games on Steam, is a fantastic little game that best fits the strategy genre of gaming. You are the captain of a starship, with control over all of your crew members, weapons, and repairs. The game is slightly reminiscent of a Star Trek kind of scenario, where the tactics of the overall battle matter far more than actually controlling an individual in a 1st-person style game. Your goal is to fly through 7 sectors filled with enemies and unknown sites to get to the final sector, where you must destroy the Rebel flagship.
In my opinion, the greatest aspect of this game is its unpredictability. Each time you restart the game, the galaxy that you fly through is completely different from any which you have gone through before. Every node you travel to is a surprise, and even fairly common situations can yield a surprise, such as a free crew member after a generic ship battle or a bonus weapon from a random node. The enemies you fight, their weapons, their tactics, and their locations all vary each time you restart the quest. With this randomization comes an enthusiasm for playing that keeps the fairly simple gameplay interesting.
Another great aspect of the game is side quests. Like many games, beating the final boss doesn’t mean you’re done yet. You are encouraged to keep playing through the game by the unlockable ships and achievements.
1) Ships
The game gives you one simple, flexible ship to start, but tantalizes you with silhouettes of 8 other awesome ships. These are unlocked by either progress in the main quest line (e.g. beating the game unlocks a cool new ship) or by doing side quests. The beauty of the side quests is that they are freakin’ impossible to get easily. They just are. Without looking up a guide online, a player would likely never find more than 5 of the ships. One of the ships, the Crystal Cruiser, has a 3-step process that requires an incredibly rare set of circumstances to occur. Certain sector types must first be on your map, and you must visit them, and random chance events must occur, all in order to have a chance at unlocking the cruiser. Talk about luck. This factor of the game makes players who seek complete domination, or just the complete gameplay experience, keep playing through the game in order to get the ship. My advice; check a guide online, that will at least tell you what to look for.

2) Achievements
Like so many games these days, FTL has an array of achievements. These come in the form about half quest-related things, and about half random fun things. For example, there is an achievement for beating the game on hard (of course). There is also the much more fun achievement “Some people just like to watch ships burn”, which is unlocked by setting every room on an enemy ship on fire simultaneously. Yeah, it’s fun. No, it doesn’t just happen while you play through trying to win. These fun little gems give players something random and fun to do when the main quest grows dull, giving this game a very high replay value.
There are many different variables to learn about in this game. There are at least 7 different classes of ship weapons, 7 types of beings who can crew ships, and more types of enemy ships than I care to count. Almost a dozen ship systems that can be upgraded. Several types of natural disaster zones you can be unlucky enough to find on the map. And to top it all off, these things tend to occur randomly, so you never know which set of events and foes you’ll have to deal with each play through.
Overall, I love this game. It never gets old, and the simple-style graphics and interface are both easy to use and endearing. The customization is great, and each replay is just as fun and interesting as the last. On a scale from 1 to 10, Faster Than Light comes in at a solid 8 for me, which isn’t bad at all for a 10 dollar game.

I got the game and soundtrack at the same time from a Humble Bundle. Listened to the soundtrack first and though, "this is pretty meh." But it fits the game brilliantly and I hardly notice it during play as it's exactly atmospheric enough to work.

As for gameplay, FTL is hard to beat in terms of how satisfying it is to play. You get the fast-paced action of a real-time strategy game, with the stress reduction of being able to pause mid-battle to give the crew orders, re-target weapons, power systems up and down, and so on. The difficulty is balanced very well to feel doable at the start, and just barely possible by the boss fight. Excellent replay value with the huge variety of ships and races.

This game is really fun and challenging when you start playing it becuase you can feel that the game mechanics give it a lot of depth and you wan't wait to learn how the game works so you can figure out how to win and develop strategies. But as you keep playing it, you slowly begin to realize how wrong you were, and that the reality is there is no depth to the game because everything that happens depends almost entirely on luck and how little anything you actually do matters.

You can play flawlessly, making all the right decisions, buying all the right upgrades to turn your ship into the perfect combat vessel that can dodge most shots, has the shields to absorb whatever manages to get through and still has a powerful enough armament to destroy anything you come across, but it won't matter because in the next battle suddenly you will be forced into a situation that is literally impossible to survive. This isn't fun, this isn't good gameplay, it's just terrible game design (or lack thereof) and I really wish people would stop making excuses for games whose developers bought into the fallacy that "everything determined by RNG = hard = good game" because it never works.

And the most frustrating thing is that this is by no means a bad game. It is otherwise very well designed and is actually really fun as long as the RNG isn't arbitrarily killing you off. The only thing the game has to do to improve is to reduce the supremacy of the RNG in determining everything that happens and to let the player's actions have more influence. I don't care if they leave in a "hardcore mode" or call less random mode "baby difficulty" or whatever, I just want to enjoy playing a game.

The flagship is totally unfair though, this final boss kind of ruins everything.

Everyone burned to death. Then everyone suffocated to death. Then, a few runs later, everyone was burned, suffocated, and blasted to death.

Giant spiders ate my crew, strange monoliths evaporated them, and asteroids turned them into fine, dehydrated powders drifting through the void.

Then I started getting better. I stayed away from the spiders, I vented the oxygen out of burning rooms, rather than sending a single hapless insectoid to fight the flames. And then, one glorious day, after so much blood, sweat, and tears, I destroyed the rebel flagship and won the game.

That was 40 hours in. There was still much to be done. This was before Advanced Edition came out, of course, so the unlock quests were the only ways to unlock all of the ships. And how long did it take me to obtain the Crystal Cruiser? 100 more hours.

That brings us to the present day, when I'm 450 hours in, and still banging out a game every week or two. And so, if you're still on the fence about buying FTL: Faster Than Light, ask yourself this: do you want a game that you'll play once and never touch again, or do you want a game that still has tons of replay-value after a frankly embarassing amount of time?

Personal Rating: Terrific but unforgiving Space Sim
Classic Rating: ★★★★☆

What makes FTL good for me?

✓ Spaaaace: this is a quite simple Space Simulator and yet it's features' rich.
✓ Great atmosphere, short game sessions and high replay value.
✓ Excellent Soundtrack, fits perfectly into gameplay.
✓ Cute graphics, even if it lacks a proper fullscreen/high res setting.

And then it's tough too because of:

✘ RNG, which can be so frustrating.
✘ Permadeath: True, you cannot save mid-game, you can only save and quit (to continue later).
✘ A lot of micromanagement involved: every choice is hard to make and you can get killed in so many ways, each time a different one.

I believe every one owns FTL already but if you don't yet, take advantage of the next sale and give it a go.

FTL has kept me interested for 66 hours already and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Every time you start a new game, the outcome is different and engaging. Although you follow the same general storyline in every play through, it still introduces new challenges and thought provoking events. You are constantly running into issues where you have to make hard moral decisions that will affect your progress in the game.

I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys happiness. 12/10

I've played this game for a couple hours and it is fun as h***. It is a difficult (but not unfair) game that gives the player a sense of accomplishment with every successful completion..... or so I've been told. (this player had fun the first few runs until every time he failed on the final boss and like a whiny b**** said "screw it, this game is to difficult, I'm gonna play a fun and relaxing game" so he looked in his library and found his three other games- Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, and Dark Souls 3.... F***.
