“We have been working on developing the first version of the Hanako IP since we were in college back in 2008-2010. We've been working on this version, after-hours, after our jobs with no budget since June of 2013. We've reached the point that we have a solid foundation but we cannot possibly polish the game to the level it deserves without being able to generate some financial support, which Early Access affords us.”

“We have two more major releases after Early Access v.3 (Launching April 5th, 2019) to polish the game and finish up the last two compaign maps for launch.

EAv.4 will focus on adding weapon skins to the game, adding the Yamai Village map to the game, and heavy animation polish to smooth out movement and overall game feel.

EAv.5 will focus on final polish, bug fixes, adding Yamai Castle map and adding launch content for customizations/expanding that system.”

  • 4 character classes (Kenshi, Naginatashi, Ninja, & Ite [Archer])

  • The full combat system featuring two stances of 4 attacks for the melee classes, two firing modes for the Archer.
  • Per-Match Skill Trees with 6 ability choices (picking 3) before unlocking a Master skill.


The full version will contain the full-feature set of the game that we have marketed and discussed, including but not limited to:

  • All 4 character classes complete (Kenshi, Naginatashi, Ite and Ninja).
  • Full 7 map campaign covering both Hanako and Yamai Clan territories.
  • Replacement of 3 set abilities with our Skill Tree/Leveling system to offer players more options.
  • Better game flow, menus, UI treatments.

New Tutorial

We made a new tutorial from scratch after introducing so many new mechanics since Early Access v.1 & v.2 to help new players find their way around the battlefield.

New Attack Animations

We wanted to address community feedback regarding fluidity of attacks, so we re-worked our melee classes’ heavy stance attacks to allow for more fluid motion but also more weight/impact.

Co-op Vs. AI

Building a player base in an online indie game is a massive challenge. So we added a Co-op vs. AI mode and map allowing for 1-4 players to enjoy destroying AI across 4 different difficulties. We’ll be adding support to our existing maps as quickly as possible.

Skill Trees (Per-Match Leveling)

We’ve wanted skill trees for years in the game, and they’re finally here! Choose between Active Skills, Movement Skills & Stat Skills to customize your play style per-match. (Similar to MOBA’s). This system introduces Movement Skills (called Talents in game) like double-tap dodges/dive rolls and double jump.

Rivals & In-Match Player Dueling

To make the online experience more engaging, we’ve added Rivals and In-Match Player Dueling. Rivals allows a player that’s killed you repeatedly to be tagged and grant bonuses for avenging your own deaths. Player dueling allows you to challenge an opposing player to a protected duel to the death that other players cannot interfere with.

Early Access 3 Patch Details & Dev Update

Early Access 3 - Coming in Feb/March

We've been working since October on our Early Access 3 patch and it is our largest release so far. We think this really brings us close to the goal line of 1.0 Full Release.

Feature Highlights

  • Matchmaking, leaderboards/stats/achievements, new menus, parties/social
  • New tutorial teaching new mechanics, features and more classes.
    Per-match skill trees/leveling
  • Co-op vs. AI mode (wave-based, play with 1-4 players)
  • New heavy stance attacks for Kenshi/Naginatashi
  • Tons of bug fixes and improvements
  • In-match Rivals & Duel challenging
  • Testing/Events

New Gameplay Changes

As mentioned above we are bringing three new huge gameplay options, the last of our core gameplay from our original design. Per-match skill trees will allow players to chose between Abilities (think Moba actives), Talents (dodges, double-tap moves) and stat boosts (health, armor, better accuracy, etc.) all to work towards unlocking a powerful MASTER ABILITY.


We're also re-working the Swordsman and Pikeman's heavy stance attacks to no longer be root-motion forced dash attacks that are clunky and hard to aim. We'll allow full range of motion until the attack plants allowing for a more fluid experience:

Release Date
We don't have a concrete release, but we'll be releasing a trailer later in January and hope the patch will be ready by late February/early March at latest.

Journey Across Feudal Japan, on a symbolic campaign representing a personal trial of life and death of a lost loved one. Experience multiple levels and game modes to bring peace or chaos, in (up to) 24 player online battles.


Choose Warriors destined to decide the future of Japan: The Kenshi (Swordsman), Naginatashi (Pikeman), Ite (Archer) or Ninja (Assassin). All featuring their own style of combat, movement and weaponry.


Master Combat through discovery of different attacks, abilities and combos. Our combat system features multiple offensive stances driven by your movement, defensive techniques (such as the grappling hook) and abilities (ranging from acrobatic combos to multi-enemy sweeps to multi-hit combos).



What kind of gameplay is this game offering?

We plan to offer a multiplayer experience with several modes of gameplay taking familiar elements and expanding them to fit the game's backstory and to introduce fun and engaging new experiences. Combat is based on your movement direction and supplemented by abilities ranging from strong stunning dashes, to multi-hit combos and Master level abilities.

Any customization for the different character classes?
We are planning on adding some customization to the characters & weapons. Like all things this will be determined by effort needed/budget. We will likely add weapon skins before characters since our content team is limited.

Will the game have any single-player gameplay?
Co-op Vs. AI Mode launching In Early Access v.3 (Apr 5, 2019) will be playable solo. The tutorial is single-player and you can play any map with/against AI.

Are you planning on bringing the game to other platforms?
Other systems is something we would like to strive for. If we can do it, what other systems we would go onto are still "up in the air" questions. Our first and foremost goal is making this game the best it can be for Steam.

What languages will this game be in?
Well English first and foremost but we plan to do at least 3-4 others. In fact we put out a survey to collect answers from you as to what language do you play your games in which you can fill out at language.hanakogame.com
