What is PLEX and how to play for free

PLEX is 30 days of game time in the form of a tradeable in-game item. If you need extra EVE currency (ISK), you can purchase PLEX for real money directly from Steam or through Account Management and sell it to other players on the in-game market. On the other hand, if you earn enough ISK, you can purchase PLEX from other players on the market and use it to extend your subscription – effectively playing for free.

PLEX is actively traded between players and can be found in every major trade hub of EVE Online. It is only consumed when you activate it, affording you the freedom to use it when and where you need it most.

Selling PLEX to boost your in-game wallet and buying PLEX to pay your subscription using in-game currency are just two of its many uses. PLEX can also be used to purchase various account services or even to pay for out of game events and products.

o7 o7 Warning! Opinions ahead, I reserve the right to be disagreed with in an amicable fashion. o7 o7

I cant recommend this game. it is a profound time sink, and has a really niche player base with very little payoff for more casual players. I played for about a year and i found myself waiting for the game experience to become fun, but it never did. the space combat is unforgivably boring, which as far as im concerned is a deal breaker.

the ship designs are bizarrely ugly too, and it constantly tempered my desire for new ships. i care less about aesthetics than combat, but playing this i was forced to stare at my ship for virtually the entire playtime, so i would have been happier if i actually liked how my ships looked.

the skill system was pretty much hands-off, you just had to wait for hours or more commonly days or even weeks to get a miniscule increase to a particular skill, and it never felt rewarding to max a skill out, just on to the next skill, a numb grind.

i realize that many people would cite the massive battles that occur as a counter to my assertion that the combat is boring, but these huge battles are infrequent at best, and due to the in-game economy being so closely linked to real world cash value, these battles could very well cost you more than a few wrecked ships. most of the time youll be battling human or a.i. controlled pirates/bandits in small time skirmishes that serve only to highlight how uninteresting the combat usually is.

i keep a book by my computer for when im downloading programs or whatever, and i found myself rereading the entire Song of Ice and Fire series while engaged in combat or mining, both primarily rely on the same skill set of moving the mouse icon and occasionally clicking buttons.

i also grew to mistrust the company CCP and the community of this game, although im sure there were lots of decent human beings amongst them. the biggest problem i had with the community happened when i first started playing. the leader of one of the most prominent corporate alliances had shown up to a livestream drunk and called out a player by his real name and asked his followers to grief this poor, totally innocent guy. the leader said during the livestream that he wanted the player to actually commit suicide irl, and the big bad leader was marshalling his ingame forces to "make it so".

this despicable behaviour was reprimanded with a slap on the wrist, a mere 30 day suspension from their little ingame council, and as far as i know, nothing more was done.

there seemed to be a lingering resentment towards players who choose to pve or mine or whatever, and i read more than a few forum posts that were more like essays on how the elitist players are right in how they grief players who choose to mine, likening them to worse than mindless drones that deserve to die over and over. it felt like i was reading the manifesto of a sociopath, rather than a reasoned sensible opinion.

there is so much more to say, but i cant realistically place all that i have to say in a single review, who would be interested in reading it?

DON'T LET THE MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION SCARE YOU AWAY.

This game is by far, the most detail oriented, player controlled space MMO ever created. EVERYTHING is within control of the players.

The game is comprised of 4 well balanced factions, Amarr, Minmatar, Caldari, and Gallente. Each having their own unique and rich storyline that ties into the backstory of Eve.

Unlike every MMO out there, Eve does not "typecast" players into certain classes, fields, races etc. Regardless of whose faction you choose to align with, you can do anything and everything you wish to. "Leveling up" is a thing of the past, skills in Eve train in real time, regardless of whether you are online or not. Skills range from taking just a few minutes (Level 1 Skills), to some taking a few months (Level 5 Skills). Because of this, it is possible for a younger/newer player in Eve to "catch up" to those players who have played for a few years while they are still getting the hang of the game.

Different Professions in Eve include:

-PVE-
You run "missions" against whatever faction is disliked by your faction. This includes running out to remote areas of Space, "Deadspace," and battling NPC pirates, drones, space stations, control towers, etc and gaining ISK ($)(Interstellar Kredits), for completing that mission. You can loot the wrecks for different equipment to be used on your ship(s) or sold on the market. After sufficient time and skill, you can even salvage your wrecks from the ravages of space, and gain additional pieces of a ship that can be used in the creation of items, or sold on the market for additional ISK. There is no "grinding," or rather, there is only as much of it as you want there to be. Whether you play 5 minutes or 5 years, you are still going to skill up, and no amount of NPC killing is going to make it go any faster. Though, you might become very rich from doing so.

-PVP-
Eve is a PVP game at its core. There is no getting around this fact. At some point, in some fashion, you will be challenged by other pilots in the game, or actively seek out to do it yourself. You will need strategy, tactfulness, and a quick mind to stay alive in the heat of PVP combat. Eve is the only MMO where "griefing" (Stealing other players mission essential items, purposely targeting them or killing them with undue cause, etc) is not only allowed, but encouraged, as long as it fits within the game mechanics and does not cause undue harrasment. There is no "safe" place in Eve. Never fly a ship you can't afford to lose.

-Mining-
There are literally hundreds of thousands of asteriods in Eve. They range in size, density, rarity, type and location. When you enter this profession, you will be flying specially designed spaceships to haul Ore, which is the unrefined material recieved from the Asteroid you are mining. The rarer the asteroid, the more valuable the Ore. The beauty of Eve in this fashion, is that although it is wonderful to mine the rarest ores in the deepest parts of space, the most common ores never cease to be in demand, and are used to refine into large quantities of minerals that build every item in Eve. So even novice miners, ones with barely the skills trained to fly a mining barge, can still turn a decent profit by mining large amounts of the common ores, and selling them on the market.

-Refining-
This is more of a sub profession. This is the ability to take unrefined ores and refine them into their basic minerals. This is highly lucrative. Some minerals can only be found in the rarest of ores, which are in turn found in the rarest of asteroids. Most professional miners can either refine themselves, or know someone who can do it for them. The reason this is a sub profession, is because it takes quite a long time to be able to refine every ore in the game, perfectly. Which means, that there is nothing that went to waste in the process of refining. As a general rule of thumb, minerals are worth more than ores, but only if you can refine well enough that you don't lose ISK doing it. Some miners are quite content with just selling the ore as is on the market, No refining required. Combine this profession with mining, and you have yourself a recipe for success.

-Industry-
This is a very broad profession. It encompasses everything to do with the construction, research, and invention required to craft every item in Eve. From the smallest space shuttle, to the largest starbase. Everything in Eve is craftable, with a few minor exceptions. Because Eve's economy is, for the most part, player controlled, everything within Eve is subject to supply and demand. As someone entering into the Industry profession, it would be your job to find out what is in demand in the Eve economy, and construct it with the purpose of making a profit. This profession is all about providing quality work at a quality price, and being at the right location at the right time to sell it. Or if you prefer, constructing all of your own equipment. The possibilities are endless.

-Trading-
Simply put, this is the ability in an ever-changing economy, to buy low and sell high. Really high. This is also more of a sub profession, in that it ties in very closely to every aspect of making money in Eve. The people entering this profession, can manipulate the market economy to achieve a desired outcome. Whether that be commanding a certain level price on a particular item, or driving down prices by selling mass quantities of a certain item (ie flooding), with the purpose of making that item no longer valuable. It is as much about commanding a profit, as it is making sure your competitors don't see a dime of theirs. This profession most closely ties in with industry, as it is much easier to manipulate a market in your region if you are able to craft the items that are in need, yourself.

-Hauling-
This is the profession of hauling large amounts of goods through various parts of space. This is an incredibly dull profession, but can make you large sums of ISK very quickly. In this profession, you will be scouting contracts that require a pickup and delivery be met. You will get paid a certain amount of ISK as a reward for successfully transporting and delivering your cargo. You are the FedEx/UPS of Eve. This is how goods that are made get to where they need to be in order to sell. The pricier the contract, the better the reward. Be warned though, you are hauling someone elses goods, and they will likely require you put up collateral in case the shipment is lost. Not only would you be risking your collateral, and your ship, they still get paid. This is a profession that isn't entered into lightly.

-Corporation Management-
Corporations are like "guilds." It is a collection of players who come together to achieve a single purpose. Not only is this entirely necessary in Eve, it is also a lot of fun. Corporation Management is the profession of running a corporation. This is by no means, a standalone profession, but it can become one. As your corporation grows, it will be necessary to coordinate, plan, and prepare for all of your pilots necessities. Protection, ISK Making, Ship Reimbursement, Fleet Ops, etc. You are the CEO of a corporation that you can design yourself. You'll need to appoint people leadership positions, and grant the rights and titles to handle affairs while you are away. Its lucrative when you have a corporation that runs like a well oiled machine.

-Pirating-
Pirating is exactly as it sounds. Your main goal in life is to grief other players. This profession falls into a PVP sub profession because undoubtedly you will provoke an attack on yourself. This is highly lucrative profession. You can camp out waiting for unsuspecting haulers to fly by, blow them up, and take their goods. You can scan down and intercept missions that require a certain item to be returned, and ransom it back to the player. Pirating is an endless stream of awesome.

Warning: Do not buy this game on Steam.

Buy it from the officail website: http://www.eveonline.com/

The game itself is amazing, but the way it is integrated into steam may result in you getting screwed over with no support from Valve.

I purchased this game which came with a free month. Then I bought an extra three month subscription. Everything played fine until three months in when I went to play Eve and the game had uninstalled itself. I tried redownloading it and it said I couldn't do to my subscription not being up to date. I emailed Valve about the issue and their response was that they only handle billing and to email Eve Online for support. I emailed Eve, and they responded that my account is still active for 1 month and that I should be able to play. I tried playing from the official Eve Online client but it wouldn't allow me to log in from my steam account. I emailed valve again explaining the situation and forwarding them Eve Onlines support email. I then waited a couple days for them to respond only for them to come back with a canned response:

"We apologize for the delay.

Support for this title is provided by the original developer or publisher. Please refer to the following article for more information on contacting the support team for this title:

Title: EVE Online
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6573-GZXN-7027&tpg=1"

No solution was ever reached and I lost the time I paid for. My account cannot be recovered because its associated with steam and not the official client. This is hands down the worste experience I have had on steam and the last time I use steam to buy any subscription time for a game.

I played EVE Online, and it was amazing! So why do I NOT recommend it? The game is more than a little overwhelming, and, clearly, in order for the game to really pay off, you need to be able to dedicate major time to it, or, you will waste your subscription, and just die, left on your own in the middle of the cold cold space. Is that what happened to me? Almost. I have a full time job, a beautiful wife, and other interests... . I am convinced you can't have all those things in your life and successfully play this game. I wish I could. So for me, and those like me, I don't recommend spending your money and time on this, unless you have enough room in your life for this beast. In its place, I recommend the X series. You can "save" your game, have a life, and load it, and pick up where you left off... and not worry about dying and losing it all, because Life called and needed some of your focus. In the future, perhaps I will find a way to manage these commitments so EVE Online is do-able, but for now, hopefully this review, about an awesome game, saves a few players some time and money.

On a side-note, if this game ever provides a subscription for life service... you will likely see me on it, from time to intermitent time.
