Humanity Fights A Losing Galactic War!
Their Only Hope: a Young Pilot and a Girl Forever Changed.

You are Roy Becket, a young pilot with dreams of becoming as skilled as his adoptive father. When a galactic war with an ancient mechanical alien race reaches its boiling point, Roy is forced to spring into action and take control of an otherworldly bipedal war machine in hopes of saving what's left of humanity.

Joining Roy is a young girl who claims to have escaped the clutches of the nefarious aliens. Forever altered through horrible experimentation, she now possesses the very abilities humanity will need to push back the doomsday clock.

Together, they must battle an unrelenting army alone and reunite their shattered family.

The End of All Things is in sight. At the edge of eradication stands Astebreed.

Arcade Shooter Evolved

Astebreed takes the classic arcade shooter and breathes new life into it. Using lovingly crafted 3D models, cutting edge particle effects, and tried-and-true Japanese mecha designs, Astebreed delivers an unparalleled atmosphere of beautiful destruction.

A Full Arsenal

Roy has a considerable arsenal to combat his foes, as well. Armed with the mysterious Lucis device, Roy's mech can shoot from a distance, paint targets for precision homing attacks, and even get close for a killing blow with a powerful blade attack. No enemy shall escape your wrath, no matter where they hide.

Dynamically Changing Perspective

Your enemies are not always ahead of you. Your enemies swarm, fly and intercept, and Astebreed's dynamic perspective always keeps the action in view. Seamlessly switching between veritcal, horizontal, and 3D shooter, Astebreed will keep you guessing what your next threat will be, without ever interrupting the action.

Astbreed is a game that leaves a lot of story to the imagination, the 'how' & the 'why', go largely unexplained. However the action is by far a crowning achievement, as a sidescroller, Astebreed goes to great lengths to create changing dimensions during play. You may be charging headlong into enemy fire to find that the enemy is now behind you, or drop down on a foe & fly circles around them during combat.

During combat you have Spread Shot/Spread lock-on, Focus Shot/Focus lock-on, Blade Flurry/Blade Dash, EX Nova/ EX Blade Storm/ EX Wild. The shot & blade techniques are a simple difference between holding down the required button, however the EX attacks vary depending on how many targets your locked on -if any- & lastly if you've locked every weapon you have on a single target you go EX Wild.

The game has difficulty settings, chapter select, & leaderboards as part of the replay experience. It also has a gallery of all sorts of unlockable images to award your exceptional efforts.

10/10 I would save my kawaii sisters again. :D

as a guy who played strikers 1945, raiden series and other bullet-hell games, this game really takes it to another level. from graphics to game mechanics itself, it really is different than other games i've played. the story is quite intriguing and when they decided to add voices to the game... "my god, this game is awesome" the only thing missing here (according to me that is) is the multi player function. i'd love to kick some serious ♥♥♥ in this game with my friends in co-op like the olden days of playstation. i think that is all i missed from this type of game.

and one more thing....

THE SOUNDTRACK IS AWESOME !!!!!!

A great, great game. Edelweiss doesn't disappoint again. Easily one of my favorite shmups although fans of more hardcore 'bullet hells' might find it a bit easy/forgiving. Haven't tried on the hardest difficulty yet so maybe that changes this. Really fun combat system and the changing perspectives (similar to Ethor Vapor) are done very well to make the beautiful and cinematic stages even more so. Only gripe people may have is the brevity of the game, though it's understandable as a doujin game that follows in the style of classic arcade shmups. Lots of replay value, though as it goes with these types of games, and I certainly look forward to picking this up whenever the mood hits to play it again.

I received this game through a humble bundle purchase. I wasnt't expecting much from it, but i have to say that i was pleasantly surprised. Although I was able to beat the game in under 4 hours, the visuals are great, and I had fun.

Anime? Mecha? Yes this game have those. The gameplay is pure controller or arcade stick button mashing combos. Not that fun, but a leisure to play. Playing this game too much will get you dizzy. Unlike classic "Shoot 'Em Up" genre which typically has a static view, this game camera angle dynamically changes from time to time in game to correspond with game progress, sometimes it's like playing a "3rd Person Shooter", sometimes it's a "Side Scroller".

Graphic wise, it's colorful. The audio is mediocre and the voice acting is awful.

For it's price, assume like you're into supporting indie games scene. Not a bad choice.

Gameplay 3/5
Graphics 3/5
Audio 3/5
Storyline 2/5
Price 3/5

Astebreed is a arcade style shooter, that constantly (mid level) changes scrolling direction. So it's a schizofrenic mix of a top-down/sideways/tunnel shooter.

The story and theme is what I reckon can be described as manga, which I'm entirely unfamiliar with. To me it just came of as hysterical japanese kids yelling constantly, so I turned off all the in-game dialogue and skipped as many animated cutscenes as possible.

The gameplay itself is really solid (I used a 360 controller) - you have two projectile fires modes: Spread and focused. Additionally, you have a close range/melee kind of sword attack, and the ability to gradually lock some sort of homing nanomites onto your enemies. The longer you hold the lock-on button, the more nanomites (theres a limit though) will eventually fly towards the targeted hostiles and slowly damage them over time. The lock-on mechanism also comes in two modes - either a far reaching tight cone, or a short ranged sphere.

The action is VERY hectic - there can be an overwhelming amount of enemies shooting an even larger amount of projectiles against you. Hats off to the rendering engine though - the framerate never once dipped below 60fps on my nVidia 780 despite an obscene amount of transparent objects were plastered all over the screen.

Imo, there's simply too much going on. I would've prefered half as muh stuff to avoid, but having it do double damage. It's often absolutely impossible to avoid getting hit. I'm more into the good ole 1942 kinda shooter where 1 bullet killed you. You end up being a little too indifferent to your enemies attacks when you can pretty much endure to wade on through a rain of bullets. Unfortuneately theres a friggin' monsoon of them, so you can still die.

The graphics are very good - very colourful and polished, but the "cutscenes" made with the game engine are so poorly directed they often made me wonder wtf I just saw.

I'm sad to admit that beating the end-game boss on normal difficulty proved too hard for me, and the motivation to keep at it too low. But the third try on easy was a success :)

In the massive world of anime, Astebreed asks a question that may have never been asked before, and one that I have been pondering since time immemorial. What if your waifu was a giant robot with the soul of a young girl?

The answer, provided by Astebreed, is one of epic OVA proportions. But don't let yourself be fooled, there is kawaii to be found inside this world. But you must fight for it. You must fight to create a more kawaii world for everyone. Should you fail to do so, there will be no kawaii left. No more oppai. No more moe. Even otome novels will be a thing of the past. This is not a world worth living in. Ready your button fingers and slice those bullets to carve a path to a world of kawaii for everyone, a world where maybe even Sakura Angels could one day be a reality.

This game is a test of your dedication. Will you fight for this utopia to become real? Or will you run and doom everyone to a world of darkness and despair? Even your waifu? Even your own waifu?

This game is incredibly fun! Like holy crap, the music, the visuals, the mechanics, they're all amazing and just come together to make an amazing game!

Sadly it's rather short... but for what it is (A bullet-hell game) It's just the right length! While I wouldn't say "BUY THIS NOW" as the price might be a bit steep for a short game, it's definetly something you should check out when it's on sale. It's fun, fast paced, and has some amazing music. The ending also had me laughing my ♥♥♥ off.

Shoot em up that uses top down and side by side bullet hell shooting. Game has a very anime ish story that makes little to no sense with most usual tropes.

Visually the game is great for a indie game, controls are fine but its very slow paced as far as shootem ups go, besides slashing and moving with your sword.

Game offers alot of variety with customizing challenges, which is a good thing since this game only has 6 levels to it.

Usually I don't play SHMUP, but this one is an exception. The graphic just... wow, full of details, and the system is not punishing for new player like me. The blade attack is a good addition asides from bullets attack. The story is a bit short, but it still an okay.

I hope there will be Astebreed 2, because I want to see more Fio and Esto. Both of them are good breeds lol.

The movement feels a little stiff, but otherwise it's an amazing game. The attack options are great and add some freedom to strategize how you want to handle each section of enemies. The music is pretty good, and the stages themslves look great. Lots of visuals to keep you entertained the whole way through, even if you mainly only fight the same basic few types of enemies on the way to each boss.

The only downside I can really think of is you basically have to watch a replay or know spoken Japanese enough to keep up with the in-stage dialogue, because there's no way you'll have the time to just sit and read it as you play.

This is bullet hell done right, and that's coming from someone who's definitely not a fan of the genre. The game is short (an experienced player can easily clear it in a single sitting), but the gameplay and full 3D rendering with impressive artwork and varying camera angles put it well above most competing titles. My biggest gripe is that the story is practically impossible to follow, and not just for the usual reasons: following along would require reading dialog balloons while dodging bullets and lasers, which is a tall order. If you want to figure out what the story's about, your best bet is to beat the game, and then read through the codex that unlocks at the end.

As an absolutely surprise come forth a pure gem of a game.
If you like mecha anime you will be absolutely entertained by this shoot'em up.
I was waiting years for a game like this.

It has mechs with a lot of details and superb design,
great anime-like illustrations,
frenetic shooting action: fighting and shooting is absolutely fun
a surprising complex storyline (check this post on community hub "Plot please" http://steamcommunity.com/app/283680/discussions/0/604941528478730075/ )
replay value for higher difficulties and achievement.

Wonderful...It will not disappoint you, get it on sale if you're not sure about, but get it.

Shmups have never enjoyed the same success in the West as over in Japan. I suppose the need to be efficient, deadly and flawless just doesn't sit well with western gamers. Astebreed does it's best to rectify that with a few key changes to the shmup format that make it a lot more accesible.

Don't take accessibility as meaning the game is easy. If you cannot learn to adapt, the last boss will destroy you (FINALLY! A game where the last boss is the hardest thing in the game). Instead of just throwing endless enemies at you and expecting you to figure it out, the game features a rather in-depth tutorial mode.

Astebreed also has regenerating health. While that may seem pointless, it works wonders for getting out of tough situations. There are also specific enemy shots that one can only dodge with good, old fashion reflexes. Astebreed gives the player some different projectiles and a sword; this sword can dodge any attack that is yellow.

When you encounter a red shot, you have to dodge. There is more than one way to accomplish said dodge, but you still need to get out of the way. You cannot simply spam your way through this game (I tried in a few spots, so I know!). For as much as can happen at one moment on screen, the game still feels entirely in your control.

There is also a pretty interesting story, even if it's a bit short. The game can be finished within a few hours, but the cool anime style and constant dialogue make the journey worth it. Once the campaign is over, you get harder difficulties, different ships and the ability to check out a gallery full of artwork and 3D models.

For the casual gamer, just skip this. Astebreed could be a jumping off point into Shmups for you, but it doesn't possess a huge amount of content. For anyone else interested, buy the game. It's well worth the price.

Astebreed is arguably one of the best Bullet-hell games/Shoot em ups in existence. It is technically very basic and the story is told mostly through the dialogue (so if you only speak English you will probably be mashing buttons while you read the text), there is no customization, minimal variability in terms of actions and simple projectile mechanics (can be blocked, and can't be blocked). This however isn't a complaint as it makes the game more accessible and although definitely on the easier side, for even novice gamers the experience is not diminished. The game offers first and formost impressive visuals, both models, backgrounds and cutscenes for its genre. The combat takes place in a variety of styles (top down-, behind-, third person views), that all mesh together nicely unlike some games where it seems forced. These mechanics add to the immersion along with the winding environments and dramatic pauses done by the camera and mech making everything one cohesive experience.

The story is moderately good although relatively vague, it leaves much to the imagination and seems rushed, mostly in terms of execution. Its not often one desires more padding, but they could have easily through in some generic missions to stretch out the experience. That is really the only gripe with the game, that it is too short, and within 2 and a half hours you will be done and wanting more. Its a solid ride and is on par with playing through a cinematic experience/movie, but it needed more content. Overall a full recommend for fans of the genre and the uninitiated alike.

Not bad.
A really short game if you're in for the story only.
Cliche story progression as well.
Gameplay wise it is rather interesting and sometimes complicated.
Multitasking is required as you sometimes have to lock-on, shoot, melee attack and dodge enemy bullets at the same time.
Artwork is 8.5/10

8/10 would recommend for a short game.
