As of July 3rd, Astebreed is now available for $14.99.

Humanity Fights A Losing Galactic War!
Their Only Hope: a Young Pilot and a Girl Forever Changed.

You are Roy Becket, a young pilot with dreams of becoming as skilled as his adoptive father. When a galactic war with an ancient mechanical alien race reaches its boiling point, Roy is forced to spring into action and take control of an otherworldly bipedal war machine in hopes of saving what's left of humanity.

Joining Roy is a young girl who claims to have escaped the clutches of the nefarious aliens. Forever altered through horrible experimentation, she now possesses the very abilities humanity will need to push back the doomsday clock.

Together, they must battle an unrelenting army alone and reunite their shattered family.

The End of All Things is in sight. At the edge of eradication stands Astebreed.

Arcade Shooter Evolved

Astebreed takes the classic arcade shooter and breathes new life into it. Using lovingly crafted 3D models, cutting edge particle effects, and tried-and-true Japanese mecha designs, Astebreed delivers an unparalleled atmosphere of beautiful destruction.

A Full Arsenal

Roy has a considerable arsenal to combat his foes, as well. Armed with the mysterious Lucis device, Roy's mech can shoot from a distance, paint targets for precision homing attacks, and even get close for a killing blow with a powerful blade attack. No enemy shall escape your wrath, no matter where they hide.

Dynamically Changing Perspective

Your enemies are not always ahead of you. Your enemies swarm, fly and intercept, and Astebreed's dynamic perspective always keeps the action in view. Seamlessly switching between veritcal, horizontal, and 3D shooter, Astebreed will keep you guessing what your next threat will be, without ever interrupting the action.

Astbreed is a game that leaves a lot of story to the imagination, the 'how' & the 'why', go largely unexplained. However the action is by far a crowning achievement, as a sidescroller, Astebreed goes to great lengths to create changing dimensions during play. You may be charging headlong into enemy fire to find that the enemy is now behind you, or drop down on a foe & fly circles around them during combat.

During combat you have Spread Shot/Spread lock-on, Focus Shot/Focus lock-on, Blade Flurry/Blade Dash, EX Nova/ EX Blade Storm/ EX Wild. The shot & blade techniques are a simple difference between holding down the required button, however the EX attacks vary depending on how many targets your locked on -if any- & lastly if you've locked every weapon you have on a single target you go EX Wild.

The game has difficulty settings, chapter select, & leaderboards as part of the replay experience. It also has a gallery of all sorts of unlockable images to award your exceptional efforts.

10/10 I would save my kawaii sisters again. :D

Hands down...one of the best shooters available on steam (as of 2014)

Great voice acting and amazing soundtrack.

If you enjoy arcade-style shooters with the correct amount of difficulty...do give this a try.

This beautiful game does require a powerful PC to run smoothly ^_^"

A jewel of a game. More than just your usually shooter. A masterpiece put into the design of the gameplay. Using the works of scenery, the functions of the blade are a definite plus considering the mecha unit. On this game, you will like many other shooters face many bosses. However there is indeed a plot line. A 9.7/10. 10/10 if there was more to the story and building it up, sure we cannot connect pieces together but this work was amazing. However my money is not wasted on this game. It provides excellent fun. If you take the time to enjoy a game for graphics, gameplay, and some story. This one has promise, can be one of the next best arcade games. However I must say that the models shown within the gallery, the storyline, the development all seemed to have a correlative ease. Although at stages there are parts we want to read, they also can distract. However this game really gives us the Bullet hell feel with a little slash and dash along the way. If you are thinking of purchasing this, I do recommend it. I was addicted on my first run that I simply had to do it again just to be sure.

as a guy who played strikers 1945, raiden series and other bullet-hell games, this game really takes it to another level. from graphics to game mechanics itself, it really is different than other games i've played. the story is quite intriguing and when they decided to add voices to the game... "my god, this game is awesome" the only thing missing here (according to me that is) is the multi player function. i'd love to kick some serious ♥♥♥ in this game with my friends in co-op like the olden days of playstation. i think that is all i missed from this type of game.

and one more thing....

THE SOUNDTRACK IS AWESOME !!!!!!

A great, great game. Edelweiss doesn't disappoint again. Easily one of my favorite shmups although fans of more hardcore 'bullet hells' might find it a bit easy/forgiving. Haven't tried on the hardest difficulty yet so maybe that changes this. Really fun combat system and the changing perspectives (similar to Ethor Vapor) are done very well to make the beautiful and cinematic stages even more so. Only gripe people may have is the brevity of the game, though it's understandable as a doujin game that follows in the style of classic arcade shmups. Lots of replay value, though as it goes with these types of games, and I certainly look forward to picking this up whenever the mood hits to play it again.

Wow what an insane game. I was already totally hyped about this one, since I love shmups and played other edelweiss productions already, I knew this will not turn out badly.

So first what makes it different than other shmups, you have a f*** big sword. It was the first shmups I played where you fight close combat.
At the beginning I was a little disoriented because most danmakus/bullet hell you have to evade the bullets, so every new game mechanic which involve you to "absorb" bullets makes the gameplay really interesting.
In addition I dislike the limited continue system in other shmups, these were acceptable in the arcade era but not nowadayws so I prefer the checkpoint system, where you can instant starts over.
And even the story feels great, ok nothing more then the standard cliche anime but who cares, I like the ending, I like the characters (awesome seiyuu) and since it is mostly a highscore/gameplay-driven game it is a nice extra.

What is left to say, actually I only finished this in easy mode (yet) because I struggle on my first try at normal which is great, because at first I did not understand the score/health system and in my opinion shmups have to be difficult. If I could finish a shmups on first try in normal something is definetly wrong. So for people who say it is short and do not have enough content, this is not a game made for them, you have to set you own goal and play it over and over until you beat the next stage, get higher score, no damage etc.
Play this game one or two hour, get better with every run until finally beat the stage and this will be the most satisfying game moment ever, at least for me.

Astebreed is a hard sell in my opinion. First off, it's borderline bullet hell. Yes, the whole screen is going to be covered in flashing red, blue and purple lights the entire game. Yes, you're going to have really stupid boss fights with multiple forms. Yes, when you die on the last form, you have to start back at form 1 and work all the way back to the final form only to die yet again. If you're not immediately put off by these design choices, you should keep an eye on Astebreed.

Truth be told, Astebreed isn't very hard by bullet hell standards. I'm God-awful at these games and I made it to the second to last boss on Normal without dying a single time. The story is one of the best ways Astebreed sinks its hooks into you. It may be dumb anime ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ most of the time (Really? The aliens decided to experiment on little girls for their world-dominating mecha project?) and you won't be able to read the dialoge what with the BULLET HELL going on in the foreground, but it's nice that they made the effort. Keep in mind that a single playthrough is just over an hour if you're not a baddie like me. Unless you're going to replay this game on Normal and Hard with score attack in mind, I'd think twice before buying. But if that's your cup of tea, then Astebreed comes highly recommended!

I received this game through a humble bundle purchase. I wasnt't expecting much from it, but i have to say that i was pleasantly surprised. Although I was able to beat the game in under 4 hours, the visuals are great, and I had fun.

Get some booze - you'll need it so you can understand the japanese translation.
Fun bullet hell game. You're prolly going to lose drunk.
Or win sober.
If you're sober, you prolly won't understand the storyline.
If you're drunk, you will priolly lose, but understand the story.
Heck, if you're sober you're going to lose too - this is bullet hell, son. Designed for teenagers with reflexes that put an adult's to shame.

Still a fun game, with an oddball storyline that kinda distracts you at points.

3/10, A SHMUP made to appeal to mainstream audiances, stripped of all of the normal difficulty found in the genre with a cliche story and gameplay that doesn't have a lot of lasting appeal.

GOOD

The game has quite beautiful graphics and an artstyle that makes it standout. Effects and bullets are flashy enough without detracting from the gameplay. Which is good since so many SHMUPs these days tend to forget this distinction. The weapons all look nice, but in gameplay don't tend to be very interesting. Bullets of two spreads, lockon of two varieties, and finally a sword. Scoring in the game is building up multipliers while not getting hit with the bullet weapons then 'cashing out' the multiplier using the sword on high value targets or a cluster of enemies.

BAD

It's easy. RIDICULOUSLY EASY. I didn't die a single time up until the final boss. I can't say I'm a fan of the health bar nor its regenerating nature. If bullets were more of a threat perhaps but your mech is able to tank bullets on top of being a very small target. There's no interesting bullet patterns that make you think of how you want to avoid them, it's either slashing yellow bullets with your sword and spamming your EX-attack which acts like a bomb (Which also grants you a shield against bullets for a few seconds), or moving back and forth slightly to avoid the predictable bullets. With all this in mind there isn't much to improve on in multiple playthroughs. The game is also pretty short even for a SHMUP. A higher difficulty option is unlockable, but doesn't seem to change much aside from preventing full regeneration after a hit and slightly tougher enemies.

Finally... the Story. Not only is it terribly cliche, but I feel that it actually detracts from the gameplay. SHMUPs are not a good medium for telling a story and here's why. The adrenline is pumping after you beat a boss then you get interupted by a long cutscene. It's not good design to do this in this genre because you're meant to beat the game in one action filled sitting. It's not as action filled if half of the time is spent in dialog and cutscenes. If they were shorter or skippable (Which also detracts from replayability) it would be less of an issue. This all wouldn't be quite so much of a problem if the story was actually any good. Power of friendship, magic mechs with the ability to fight the previously invincible enemy forces, corruption and betrayal. It's a laundry list of anime cliches.

A little foreword before this review starts proper: Due the fact cusses abruptly become ♥♥♥♥♥♥ for some odd reason. Which do not, in my humble opinion, expound upon how this game rocks on many known, and unknown, levels. To wit, I will be replacing cusses with various words that are found on sweethearts. Now, on to the review proper.

What else can I say about this game that has not been already said by many countless others. The controls are solid, the acting is top notch, the difficulty follows a decent curve (starts off pretty easy at first, but you'll need to have that knowhow to keep yourself in one piece come the latter half of the game let me tell you), the graphics are swank, and just.... EVERYTHING!! EVERYTHING about this game looks and feels like it had been crafted very carefully and very heartfeltly by people who knew how to make a FOGing great game.

As of writing, I had just 1cc'd the game on easy, will intend on attemping the same on normal soon. There art many feels abound in this game, ending on a wonderful note (not spoiling anything here).

To the souls at Edelweiss; You. HUGing. ROCK! For making such a masterwork of a game, that indeed leaves many a triple A release green with envy. And the people at AGM PLAYISM also rock in the same manner for translations and bringing this jewel of a game to the other side.

Sometimes it's easy to lose track of where you're are at certain times, but that adds to the fun just as much as it detracts in certain cases. And although I know that shmups aren't everyones kinda cuppa. I do know that this is hands down, one of THE best shmups out there on the steams this year. Not even counting the fact that it had a Metacritic rating of 93, which made it the highest rated PC game of this year thus far.

To all of you avid shmup lovers and indeed, anyone willing to give the genre a whirl. GET. THIS. GAME. You will not be disappointed.

Turn HUD and dialogue off to enjoy the beauty of geometrical lightning and colour.

The only complaint I have with this game is that it could have more optimizations so it doesnt cause slow motion sometime in 1080p.
