"A roguelike inspired game somewhat similar to Binding of Isaac and Wizards Lizard. The art style could've been better, but the game mechanics are solid."

Version 1.8.1 is Live!

Hi everyone,

This is a small update to fix a couple of teething problems with version 1.8, as well as a couple of other small changes.

Changelog:

  • A bug that showed an incorrect number of tokens required for a Green Chest respin has been fixed.
  • If the player has the Forget-Me-Not pickup, it will now show on the game over screen. For those times when you forget the Forget-Me-Not ;)
  • Zombie Chest boss description changed.

A couple of issues that were fixed in a recent stealth patch:

  • An occasional responsiveness issue when using a mouse to attack with the sword has been fixed. If you ever encountered a situation where a mouse button click didn't result in a sword swing; this was probably the cause.
  • The light beam now correctly aligns with the Searching Eye enemy on the Fading Light minigame menu screen at all resolutions.

Version 1.8 is Live!

Hi everyone,

Version 1.8 is finally here!

Changelog:

  • Fading Light - A new minigame that costs 10 tokens to unlock.
  • New enemy - Searching Eye.
  • The respin system for green chests has changed. Every respin will now guarantee a win. Each successive respin will require more tokens, to a maximum of 10 tokens (increase: 1, 3, 5, 10).
  • Double-spin spin attack. Pressing the attack button at the very end of a spin attack will activate a second spin for a potential of 10 points of damage.
  • Spin attack movement speed increased slightly.
  • Door key carry speed increase. Carrying a door key will increase the player's speed instead of slowing them down. I've received a lot of feedback regarding the tedious task of having to carry the key to the lock. Carrying the key will now be advantageous.
  • Move whilst attacking with the sword. The player is allowed a small amount of movement whilst attacking with the sword, as opposed to being fixed on the spot. Sword combat will feel more fluid.
  • You can now turn whilst attacking with the sword. Locking the player's direction whilst attacking led to some frustrating situations where they would be hit from behind, unable to turn and attack quick enough.
  • Player move speed has been increased slightly.
  • Keyhole colour has been changed from dull blue to a vibrant gold. This should make them much easier to spot.
  • Hitting a cannonball with the sword will now provide some satisfying feedback.
  • A new achievement for the Fading Light minigame.

A big thank you goes out to everyone that has helped support the game since its initial Steam release. Your feedback, suggestions and motivation have been invaluable.

Despre acest joc

Combining its own unique take on the real-time roguelike genre, with a nostalgic 16-bit look and feel, Diehard Dungeon is a game that feels both familiar and quite different at the same time.

Followed by a trusty, treasure collecting companion chest, you must make your way through the dungeons many randomly-generated rooms and levels. Armed with a sword and a ‘hand cannon’, all manner of nasty dungeon dwellers, bosses and traps will need to be defeated or traversed in order to emerge from the dungeon victorious!

To aid you in your quest, you may be lucky enough to encounter one or more upgrades or new abilities scattered throughout the dungeon, or bump into the remnants of other players (Champions) via the unlockable 'Champion Mode'. Champions wander atop the dungeon walls, ready to unleash their souls upon passers by. Be careful though, as not all Champions are helpful.

A randomly generated dungeon is created every playthrough, with many secrets and multiple outcomes.

The game features a dynamic difficulty and ranking system - the better you do, the more challenging the game will become. Only the most skilled dungeon escapees will attain the highest ranks.

Do you have what it takes to survive the dungeon?

Minigames

  • Mayhem: You have 3 minutes to get a high score by any means necessary. Mayhem is easy to learn, but difficult to master.
  • Survival: An endless series of progressively harder dungeon rooms. Avoid receiving damage and clear rooms within the time limit for bonuses.
  • Fading Light: Destroy 10 pyramids as quickly as possible, whilst avoiding the gaze of the searching eyes, and the hordes of bloodthirsty zombies.

Each minigame has a global leaderboard.

Cerinţe de sistem

    Minimum:
    • OS: XP, Vista, Win 7, Win 8
    • Processor: Dual Core 2.0 GHz
    • Memory: 256 MB RAM
    • Graphics: 128MB video RAM and at least Shader Model 2.0

I think its pretty challenging also and has a Pro Mode ! It has pretty much has most of the game mechanics as Zelda,so its very familiar. I would recommend useing a Game Controller thoe! So give this one a shot if you are Zelda fan or a Rogue-like fan !!!

Diehard dungeon is a rogue-like game in which you venture inside a dungeon and grab loot, upgrades and basically just slash your way through the monsters. You can choose your own path although some routes dont have that many differences. You will die A LOT in this game, trust me. It starts very slow and easy but it'll eventually get way harder and you'll rely on dodging and knowing your enemies to successfully beat a floor without losing any hearts. There are a few upgrades that upgrade your gun, sword or movement speed. The game is rather short BUT, like i said, you'll die A LOT so it'll provide you with a few hours of fun. If you decide to do the achievements the game gets even better although most of them unlock fairly easily if you keep playing.

I highly recommend this to any rogue-like fan. I enjoyed it a lot.

Fun game, decent amount of content for the price.

“What would happen if The Legend of Zelda were to have randomly generated dungeons?”

This is certainly the question the man behind indie studio TrickTale must have asked himself many times before working on DieHard Dungeon. In this top-down 2D dungeon crawler, the main goal is to explore and survive a succession of randomly generated rooms populated by various enemies. Amassing gold, avoiding traps, and collecting golden keys are the things you will have to do to reach the end of each level, all the while fighting your way through the different rooms and trying to collect power-ups that are spread around.

In order to help you in this task, you are equipped with a sword which acts as a melee weapon, and a Hand Cannon which throws explosive projectiles. You will also be followed during your exploration by a magical chest, which acts as a companion and collects gold for you. After some time, it evolves and can become an active item, defending you throughout the levels.

The controls in DieHard Dungeon are fairly easy, and a simple tutorial will help you get the hang of things. The game is best played with a controller, as it was firstly meant to be played on the Xbox Live Indiegame Marketplace.

While it borrows most of its aesthetics from The Legend of Zelda, DieHard Dungeon is also inspired by another game that’s hugely popular in the rogue-like genre: The Binding of Isaac. Just like in Isaac, the player will be able to find special items that are spread around the levels. In DieHard Dungeon though, power-ups are available thanks to randomly placed chests that act as slot machines. If successful, the player is rewarded with a bonus, which he can accept, or refuse and reroll for a new chance at getting a better power-up. Some enemies will also drop tokens, which can be spent in a Token Well, giving the player another chance at getting better items.

Taking everything into account, DieHard Dungeon feels alive and responsive. The sense of progression is present throughout the different levels. The fact that the dificulty adjusts itself depending on the player’s performance gives him the feeling to be “fed” in a good way: the game grows with the player, and the challenge curve always feels right. The randomly generated levels make the game a new challenge to play each and every time. Unfortunately, unlike in The Binding of Isaac, you are not able at this time to input your own seed. “At this time”, because while the game has been released for over two years now, it is still in active development. TrickTale is constantly improving its creation by adding powerups, challenges, enemies, and by working on the game’s balance. One clever decision that has been made for example is switching the player’s speed from low to high when carrying a key. This change, which will certainly be available in the next patch will definitely help in the game’s dynamics by making the player’s escape a positive action instead of a struggle.

The main drawback with DieHard Dungeon though, is its lack of diversity in graphics. While trying a bit too hard to pay its respect to its elders, the game lacks creativity in getting a strong visual identity of its own, and therefore may look a bit bland for some people. This problem is felt up to some of the enemies’ patterns which act just like their grand-parents counterparts, or even the charge ability of the player’s sword. While it’s always a good thing to throw a wink at the games that made your childhood and help the player overcome enemies by putting him in a familiar place, it would have been appreciated to see a bit more diversity in this regard.

There are also a few points in which the game could benefit some tweaks, such as an in-game user interface showing your current collected gold, a timer that could certainly attract the speedrunning scene, or even simply an indicator showing the current level you’re exploring.

Despite these points, DieHard Dungeon feels really nice. The dungeon theme combined with the randomly generated levels, the variety in powerups, and the fact that the dificulty adjusts itself in real time makes it a game that is a real joy to play. The replay value is definitely great, and when you take into account the fact that the game is in active development, that it features a champion level (which is some kind of new game + once you’ve beaten the last boss), and even minigames, all that for a mearly $5, you get a game that not only is an excellent introduction to randomly generated dungeon crawlers, but can stand on its own with no problem whatsoever and definitely deserves your attention.

It might feel like a ripoff of Binding of Issac to some but this game brings something aesthetically and gameplay wise to the table that sets it apart. Leaning more on the zelda influences, the game is fun, unique, and worth the few bucks it costs.

This is a sort of weird Zelda-inspired dungeon crawler. You get a sword, a gun that shoots time-bombs, and a chest that follows you around. If you die you lose some of your stuff and have to start over, but since the dungeon seems to be more or less the same everywhere, this is not really a huge setback.

This is not a ♥♥♥♥ing rogue-like. You idiots (community) need to stop slapping that tag on every ♥♥♥♥ing game on Steam. Go play Rogue so you can tell the difference, ffs.

Anyway, this is not a bad game. It's fun to play and it looks like there's still updates happening. My only real complaint is that it leaves too much debris everywhere, which detracts from the gratifyingly clean feeling that you get from clearing a room in Zelda. It would be nice to have an option to make the debris vanish after 5 seconds or something.

It has been a while since I have seen such a good game squandered by having so many complete BS ways to die combined with some glitches that break the experience. The main glitch I am talking about is how sometimes I can be walking away from an enemy and swinging at him but my attack direction gets, for no reason, temporarily locked in one direction. So I am desperately trying to swing in the right direction but instead am taking massive dmg from that side because I am defenseless. That and I can be having a perfect run, never even taking one hit, then all of a sudden I get thrown into a situation that is unavoidable and all of my life is drained right away, game over permadeath. That is one thing I also hate, permadeath games. That is just what I want, for all of my hard work to be thrown down the toilet because the developers programmed the game to screw me over as hard as it can in certain spots. In my mind, permadeath is just an excuse to pull a blanket over a game's other flaws such as how short it is, in which I have no doubt this one is probably pretty short. But i may never beat it because of the sheer amount of different ways to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥tingly die, especially boss fights. You have to get too close to attack and it is way too easy to get hit by a boss and they just obliterate me and I feel totally powerless. I started just hitting them with my cannon and it worked and I could beat them, but after beating 3 bosses and playing for over an hour, the real problem dropped: I was doing great then a guy with a spiked wooden shield backed me into a corner and drained me from 6 hearts to zero, game over, all that work lost. There are some enemies who run from you and you have to chase them to the other side of the room to kill them, and little green things that hop around the map and hit traps that send an arrow from off-screen to hit you unknowingly. That is probably the game's biggest flaw, other than the BS deaths, is that it is zoomed in way too far. It seems like I only ever take dmg because I have no idea what is going on around me because I can only see a few feet around my guy. It really is terrible how far in it is zoomed. I mean I have two and a half hours in this already and do not feel like I have gotten even a slight bit of progress towards ever beating it, and probably never will, and do not care in the slightest bit because it only cost a dollar to find out if this game has any redeeming qualities, in which it has zero. I just uninstalled this and couldn't be happier.

+ Cool concept
+ Tough but fair
+ Retro graphics
+ Procedurally generated dungeons = replayability

- Random crap on traps make them practically invisible
- There's also a bit of luck involved

Game is like Binding of Isaac meets Zelda(like a lot o previous reviewers has already pointed out). Can't say I had any big hopes but it's cheap and I thought what the hell. Now, I've played 10h plus and I'm still going. Everytime I enter the dungeon is different, all rooms are randomly generated and you'll never know what's behind that next door!

Personally I think the level up system is really cool; the better you get, the tougher the monsters get. That's what it's all about, eh? No being level. 100 and slaughtering small level. 1's.

Also, there are a lot of cool and useful perks/boosts that you can find while exploring the dungeon, wich adds to this great experience!

It's on sale for another week! Buy it!

This is a breath of fresh air for roguelites. The controls work fine, and the combat really fun. Graphics are stylized well, very pretty lighting while keeping a retro look. Definitely worth a try if you like roguelike games or you want to get into them.

Top-notch dungeon crawler! Diehard Dungeon is, well, a dungeon where you die - hard.

It starts out easy, but as you progress and your rank increases, you get put into more difficult dungeons with chaos exponentially growing (hopefully with your skill also growing at the same rate). Along the way, you get power-ups which give you random bonuses (like extra life, firing three pellets from your gun, etc.) and, of course, some are much better than others.

Also, minigames - they're there! Along your trek, you will stumble upon little games that will give you fantastic items (like the Forget-me-Not) and will prolong the little game, which, at it's core, is basically you standing in the corner, firing your gun at the approaching enemies, and collecting LOTS of loot with your Companion Chest (who, in fact, is a GREAT companion)

It's repetitive in nature, but with all the content inside, it's difficult to get bored.

7/10

I love it. I suck at it, but it's a great game.

If you like Zelda: A Link To The Past and you wanted a game that was significantly harder and had randomized dungeons, this is for you.

I wonder if there is any sort of plot in the game, though. I can't get far enough into it without dying! :)

Diehard Dungeon has all of the fun elements of a Rouge like. Lots of powerups, a smooth difficulty curve, and the enemies can hurt/be hurt by each other as well as the traps! Also theres several fun minigames you can unlock. I like the retro style and large sprites.

I only managed to slay the first boss so far, but as far as I can tell this is a very nice rougelike!

I usually rage quit after few runs but I look forward to rage quitting again in the future, hopefully dying a little further in the dungeon :)

I'm also impressed by devs improving the game long after release.

A nice little game on the roguelike genre.

While the combat is quite simple, the game makes a good job at keeping it interesting and rewarding, there are a good amount of powerups to collect, and bosses to fight, although the majority of these are pretty easy.

There are multiple environments, but they don't really have a lot of personality, it's just kind of a palette change and a little bit of enemy diversity.

You can finish the game quite fast, as the campaign is not very long, but you can always make it more challenging choosing the hard path.

As a great extra, there are a pair of minigames, one is a dual stick shooter where you have 3 minutes to try to beat you highscores, the other one is a room based survival game. Booth are good, and the developer is working on a third one.

It may not have the deep of other games of the genre, but I still think it's well done and deserves a recommendation.

I have very much enjoyed my time playing diehard so far. At this point I have escaped the dungeon and unlocked the hard mode but have not started that yet. It was not too much trouble getting though the first difficulty after a little bit of practice. Part of me wishes items rolled over to your next death as they can be difficult to aquire right away, but the fact that they don't increases the difficulty a bit. All in all this is in my opion a worthwhile game that has a lot of good dodging and combat to entertain.
