LOVE Update #12 - Small Fixes and a Bonus Level

Hey, Fred here with another small update. Here's the notes:
• New Bonus Level, 1-1
• 1-1 added to Level Select
• Retry Button on Game Over / Results Screen
• Clarified hazards in Level 1 (and added sounds!)
• Added directional hazards to Level 2
• Level 16 bullets fire 3.3 times per second instead of 5 times per second
• Misc Fixes

1-1 is only a fun little side thing I did in a Sunday afternoon, but hopefully you'll enjoy it. You can access it from the Level Select menu under "Bonus Levels". The other level hazard modifications address the only things I've ever considered "unfair" in the game, and I hope that'll sate new players' rage when they give it their first go.

The challenging levels are balanced with the inclusion of a simple yet unique respawn system wherein the player can leave a checkpoint at any location at any point, as long as they are on solid ground. Players have a number of gameplay modes to choose from, whether they want it easy, normal, or they want to try their hand at a mode designed specifically for Speed Running.

Beyond the visual aesthetic, the challenging level design, and the abundance of features, there is the fantastic soundtrack composed by James Bennett, which brings the simple 3-color atmospheres to life.

What is "LOVE?"

LOVE is a 2d platformer with 8-bit styled graphics. The Main mode consists of 16 levels, going from easy to hard. This game is one of the Best platformers on steam in my opinion. It's an amazing time killer and + it's not overall expensive and I'd say buy it if it goes on sale. Also gamepad support is for this game.

Pros -

Good 8-bit Graphics.

Incredible Soundtrack.

Has several modes to choose.

Controls aren't hard.

Good stage design.

Gamepad/Console Controller can also be used

Cons -

Not really any. But this is just me failing but the only thing that I hated was me dieing over and over again, but that was just my experience, as I am not that overall the best at platformer games.


Anyways try it out if you like platformers, 8-bit games, or just want a time killer game for a cheap price or so.

Okay, first off I very much enjoyed this game. Though I'm not entirely sure about "a focus on a challenging difficulty", the controls were wonderfully consistent and responsive, which I imagine is exactly what you want out of a precision platformer. I never once had a death in this game that I could blame on anything but myself. And that's how it should be, really.

I'm far from an expert on precison platforming, but that feeling of actually being in control is exactly what I'd want out of a skill-based game. The simplicity of the gameplay helps a lot, of course.

Very short, and though the level editor does help, a better level creation interface and/or Steam Workshop support would be nice. However, a game that's short and to the point and doesn't overstay its welcome is better than a long game that gets really redundant and boring after a while.

+very responsive controls
+purely skill-based, no impossible timing or luck or unreasonably precise jumps
+reasonable length
+level creation feature (not really a level editor, exactly, you just need to edit a collection of gifs to make a level)
+nice soundtrack

-could have used additional more difficult levels
-visual style is a bit inconsistent (especially the weird backgrouns in the later levels), and "retro" has been done to death
-no Steam Workshop support

(Bought this game on a sale for two bucks, but all in all I'd say it could be worth three.)

♥♥♥♥ing Amazing Indie Platformer Game.

16 levels, all very creative and really really fun to play.

The music is catchy as hell

The game is tough as nails

And it has 5 gamemodes to these levels which really mix up the difficulty

It's awesome!!!! Buy it right now :)

I didn't expect much out of this game, but I was pleasantly surprised. Interesting environments, tight controls, and fantastic music all for 3$, or a dollar on sale. It's worth a purchase, give this game some love.

Love is in Early Access, and I'm aware of that. This is just my first experience playing it and what my thoughts are about it so far. First of all, I must admit I am a bit disappointed because it was so short. My first playthrough took 40 minutes, but I'm assuming they did that because it was designed to be played in Speedrun Mode. Simple controls - A to jump, S to save checkpoint, arrow keys to move. It's not a very complicated idea and there aren't really any special mechanics; it's player vs. environment. Not to say that they need to add more things to spice it up, it was made like that and it's supposed to be like that. Its simplicity is one of the things I like most about the game.

Another thing I liked was that I was really starting to groove and dig the music since I entered the fourth level (yellow walls). They definitely need to get a soundtrack up. Really set the vibe, and got me to enjoy it and just chill. Great job on that.

What's interesting is that the more times I replay it, the more I love it. If you didn't see me mention it just a second ago, you can play the game in Speedrun Mode with a timer and an option to upload to the leaderboards. Now, I'm not exactly sure where the leaderboards are accessible from at the moment but hey, it just came out a couple hours ago. If it's addicting to play now, without a public leaderboard, I can only imagine how much time I'd spend when it does come out. You can also play it in YOLO mode where you only have 1 life for all 12 levels.

First impression was that the difficulty levels were too low but like most games, they introduce new knowledge slowly or how to approach a certain situation then build the difficulty up as you go along. But it's still a mildly challenging game, so I'm hoping the level designers might tweak a few things to make it slightly more difficult. Not Super-Meat-Boy-difficult of course, just something that might make people put more effort into trying to finish it. But until then, YOLO mode ought to do for now. Also, they should really make it so that ESC doesn't completely exit you out of the game. I was trying to go to the menu in the middle of a game and exited instead.

Give it a chance. I wasn't very impressed the first time I played it but after spending a bit more time with it, I'm looking forward to where they're taking Love and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who'd enjoy a simple and cute little indie game.

What a great retro-style platformer. Quite a surprise...

Extremely fluid controls, solid and challenging level design. Sound and music are perfectly suited and not annoying.

For something basic, this is really about as good as it gets. Recommended to any fan of 2D platformers.

I may not love Love, but I dig it quite a bit.

Nice music and solid platforming which demands a high degree of precision in order to progress even with the alloted 100 lives. The distinctive retro aesthetics make this an easy recommendation for genre fans, especially given the low price which is absolutely worth it in this fella's opinion.

Went in expecting the 2009 DS dating sim by Konami, got a gorgeous better platformer instead. Music's great, style's great, difficulty is just right. Buy this if you love platformers. Pun intended.

I was suckered in by the tag Great Soundtrack. It seems I'm in the minority who doesn't agree the soundtrack is all that fantastic. The platforming is mildly well designed at best, and certainly doesn't hold a candle up to a game like Super Meat Boy, for instance. There definitely aren't enough levels to keep me coming back for too long.

Well, for all that I have to gripe about it, it's still only $3, and I bought it at $1 in a sale, so frankly for the price tag there's very little to complain about. You still get a good amount of entertainment for your money, and the one song in the soundtrack worth the tag Great Soundtrack is indeed Great. Take a listen to Kid, it's well worth your time.
