PREMIER EDITION

While seeking life on a distant planet, an astronaut discovers an abandoned Russian town. He suspects his mission is a hoax until a mysterious young woman saves him from a strange and deadly phenomenon... Lifeless Planet is a third-person action-adventure that features an old-school sci-fi story and spectacular environments in the spirit of classic action-adventures.

After a hard landing on the planet, the astronaut discovers the planet that was reported to be rich with life is instead a barren wasteland. When he goes searching for his crew, he makes a more startling discovery: evidence that humans have already been to this planet years ago! When he comes upon a deserted Soviet-era Russian town, he struggles to make sense of his mission. Did his light-speed travel to the planet send him back in time? Or is this all some strange Cold War hoax?

Along the way, the astronaut meets a Russian woman, Aelita, who is somehow able to survive the hostile atmosphere of the planet. Through an unusual natural phenomenon, her skin causes the soil to glow green under her feet. The player must use these glowing tracks as a guide across the planet past treacherous and deadly threats. Is she leading him to safety... or an untimely death?

Lifeless Planet was inspired by Cold War era science fiction stories, posing questions about humankind's desire for space travel. What if you journeyed across the galaxy to another planet, only to find humans had already been there? What kind of person would sign up for a one-way mission, leaving behind planet Earth and everyone they've ever known and love... to go in search of an Earth-like planet?

Equipped with a limited-use jet-pack and a mobile robotic arm, the player must use wits and skill to solve puzzles, unravel the mystery, and survive the Lifeless Planet!

Key Features:
  • Explore 20 unique and atmospheric environments on a vast and treacherous planet.
  • Follow a mysterious young woman as she guides you past dangerous terrain and deadly life-forms.
  • Investigate the startling discovery of an abandoned Russian town.
  • Experience an exciting and intriguing story through rich graphics and cinematic cut-scenes.

Booooooring, no action, no twist, made by amateurs. Lame graphics, even worse audio. Don't buy it. Save yourself and your money

This is hands down one of the best exploration titles I have played. Just bought, and played through it trying to explore as much as I could. I also finished the game same day. I definitely recommend it to anyone who has a curious mind, likes reading (a lot), and has a few hours of down time. Is there replay value? Only if you didn't get everything (probably the data sample) the first time around. Truly an amazing experience.

Let's be clear here: I didn't dislike this game, but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone, either. The love and care of a single man is shown in beautiful atmospheric music and, occasionally, the environments. However, this isn't enough to carry the whole game.

PROS:
- As I mentioned, GREAT music and occasionally magnificent environments
- Draws you in
- Interesting story
- Enemies are awesome

CONS:
- The jump and the fact that the game is built around it
- Put the rock in the hole puzzles
- Very noticeable changes in quality
- Poor pacing

Lifeless Planet's first hour drew me in; I wanted to find out more about the mystery. I was genuinely curious. But as the game continued, bits of story were more and more sparse and rapidly decreasing in cohesiveness. By the end, I found the story component of the game intriguing but not quite satisfying.

My first impression of the graphics were that they were pretty mediocre; in fact, I even thought the game looked pretty ugly in one of the first few environments, approximately an hour in. Then, suddenly, the next level was gorgeous, colour-rich, and stunning to look at. Unfortunately, the game kept going back and forth between beautiful and meh scenery. While the music really helped me enjoy the game, the change in quality sometimes broke the immersion.

But man, were the enemies cool. I loved them. I won't give anything away, but if you're into interesting enemy design, you'd probably like this game.

My least favourite part of this game was the jump (as well as the mechanical arm, but that part felt rushed and rather dumb). The jump was SO annoying that I became increasingly frustated with the mechanics of crossing a simple path. Some environments paired with the jump simply did not work, and it was infuriating just how simple the platforming I was screwing up was.

Even the extended jet-pack time mechanic, by far the most fun thing in the game, kept being taken away at convenient times after I'd stopped needing it; same with the threat of running out of air. It doesn't seem real, but like it's an in-game scenario. The puzzles were occasionally interesting, but were basically never challenging, which saddened me. Some moments in this game were really cool, but it feels like a mixed bag.

In the end, I liked this game somewhat. The story definitely had some interesting parts, and I was invested enough to want to battle the jump out to the end. I'm not completely satisfied, but I am hopeful for what the creator could make with more money and resources.

Definately worth the $10 I got it for on sale. It isn't life changing but it does give you a deeper appreciation for our planet and how we fit into it. I would definately recommend this to someone looking for a good sci-fi indie game who doesnt need to blow somethings head off every ten minutes with gun. The atmosphere is great and I wont go into detail about the story but if you feel like you arent really getting into it just push through a little farther and make it to the end. It is a decent payoff, leaves you feeling like a game should in my opinion by giving you alittle what you want but not everything.

Didnt know i had this till looked in my library one day, was probably off a bundle or somit. Installed it, played it, wasnt sure about it but then just couldnt stop as i thought it wont last too long i think but kept playing for 5-6 hrs straight, and i NEVER finish games or play games much anymore especially as i get bored and wana do somit diff after 30 mins of playing somit usually. So yeah, a surprising game thats short and really good. Loved the jetpack gameplay. Hope more of the same from the devs especially jet pack gameplay stuff.

Well done. MAKE MORE OF THE SAME! :D

Nice game, pretty cool story and nice atmospheric environments.

However the jumping puzzles are insanely hard. I spent 20 minutes trying to get past a 'man-eating flower' multi-jump puzzle before I gave up and probably won't play it again. It's a shame there's no cheat codes or anything to get past these crazy hard parts.

Please note I'm someone with zero dexterity, I also hated half-life 1 for this reason (all the jumping on moving cylinders and stuff). But at least there was a cheat mode to get past the awful parts :)

It's a shame because it ruins an otherwise nice game for me.

Good game if discounted. I think $10 fits the value of the game pretty well. It's definitely an indie game, with lots of rough edges and levels of detail that are occasionally frustratingly lacking. You spend the entire game as a little astronaut man running around this planet with seam-heavy level transitions and a very linear path (not straight but definitely always on a rail). Given the type of gameplay, the linearity is definitely appropriate, it's just that it's a big, dull planet with some pretty ridiculous obviously computer heightmap generated canyons and crevices that steal away any suspension of disbilief.

But it does make for some interesting sci-fi. The concept is interesting. It's kind of a movie type of plot where all you do is sit back and learn, slowly, what it is you're looking at. The gameplay is extremely dull, however, because the only challenges, with the exceptional of three or four mini-puzzles, are "don't jump too far" and "*splat!* no not that ledge, the other one". You have no weapon and there are only about three types of things you can push or carry. That's it, the rest of the time you're running. Run! Run, Forrest, run!

With simplistic graphics and limited gameplay, I still recommend the game, but I rate it a 3.3/5.

To be honest I wasn't expecting much out of the game at first, but I'm glad I went back to play it! Though there is lots of running and jumping to dodge danger it was still a great game! I wasn't expecting the story for the enviroments. The music was just beautiful I wished there were more of it in the actual game.

This is a great atmospheric 3D platformer. It weaves a neat, mysterious tale, using no HUD and periodically chiming in with excellent ambient music. The world is beautiful as well. Cons include a story beat that is not fleshed out as well as it should be to be impactful to the player, and a few irritating "geyser" sections where the physics seem a little wonky.

I was expecting Lifeless Planet to be so much more than it is. Having said that, it's still very beautiful and enjoyable. Where the game lacks is in its mysterious story it's trying to tell. It just isn't very interesting and makes discovery rather boring and tedious. Still, I recommend this game since the price I paid for it as part of a bundle was cheap enough that I got my money's worth.

Atmospheric and visually striking. Worth playing through. The game can be completed relatively quickly but the story and the ambience created in the game make it seem like you've spent a lot longer than you have.

The Game Lifeless Planet is a type of game created for a specific group of players... There are players who just like to play, others who like puzzles and prefer a game with less gameplay options and complexity and a good story to be played...

Anyway, it's not a game to be underestemated, is a game of exploration, the graphics are reasonable, but not enough so much impressive, the puzzles of the game are not challenging at all, nothing that intuition can not handle, though it can be tricky sometimes... Obviously it's a game that does not give you directions, if you play for a long time may find it repetitive or even boring, but there is always a different mystery waiting for you ahead, make sure that the misteries you will discover in the future will be worth with the course of events...

The game's focus is the intriguing story involved, I literally could finish it in 6 hours, playing directly... It is simply a game that holds you in the course of the story, if you really enjoy it, you will not be abble to stop playing until you finish it, I could not leave the computer for all six hours until the end... You want to know and unveil the mystery behind the story and I found this wonderful... And belive me... It is difficult to impress me or even try to create a plot I cant figure out the end before of it... That is why I enjoyied so much...

It is a game with a science fiction context well prepared, possess amazing technological concepts and so that the explanations involved in the plot makes you be surprised every new document and discovery found! Undoubtedly! They are to be congratulated in this aspect! Although it cannot be considered a game with a very rich graphic or even with many playable commands or options, basically, you walk, jump and solve puzzles to keep going...

One of the tags on the store page for Lifeless Planet is "Walking Simulator". Now I don't enjoy walking simulators and I'm unsure if this is one or not. It does involve quite a bit of walking, but also a generous amount of jumping, jet-packing and puzzle-solving. I'd say it is as much a 3D platformer as a walking simulator.

https://youtu.be/35jBWITXsWA

I found the jet-packing segments to be the most fun. Our hero doesn't always have access to the full abilities of his jet-pack due to a lack of fuel. The fuel is storyboarded to run out at certain sections of the game, it's not some resource that you can carefully manage to make other parts of the game easier. It's designed so you can jump higher and further on the platform-type parts of the game and afterwards it becomes depleted.

The puzzle difficulty isn't too perplexing. The couple of puzzles that had me stuck meant that I just needed to explore the area a bit further until I found an item or a switch that created part of the solution.

Due to the game not having a great difficulty level it's a fairly relaxing affair, I found myself playing the game last thing at night to unwind a little. There's a great atmosphere in the game backed up with some really nice ambient sound effects that demand the volume be dialled up a notch or two.

The graphics are pretty nice looking with the exception that a lot of the textures for the surroundings are fairly low-res. This becomes apparent when the camera is close up to them, from afar the world looks quite impressive. The hero is really nicely detailed, especially the reflection from the visor on his space helmet.

It took me about seven hours to complete the game at a leisurely pace. I found myself picking it up and playing it for about an hour at a time. The game holds a couple of achievements that increase the replayabity somewhat. One is to complete the game under four hours and the other is to complete the game without dying. I'll probably attempt these soon. I'm not sure how I will fair!

Lifeless Planet is the sort of game that is the reason why I don't start writing recommendations for games until I've completed them. If I had written my review after only playing the first hour of the game it would've certainly been a positive, but after playing the rest I just can't bring myself to do it.

Before I get into why this is the case, I feel it's important to actually tell what the gameplay is like, because the store page doesn't really do it justice. It sort of vaguely makes it out to be an adventure or exploration game, but what Lifeless Planet really is is a fairly linear platformer. That isn't inherently a bad thing, and at the beginning of the game it works fine, only occasionally marred by poorly placed jumps where you have to choose between jumping without using the jetboost and not jumping far enough or jumping with the jetboost and soaring past the platform because of the awkward placement in relation to the planet's gravity. But later on in the game they seem to decide that exploring a Mars-like planet with desolated Soviet architecture with audiologs explaining the history isn't interesting enough, and so for about the last 1/3 of the game it spirals into a nightmare of pitch black darkness where you just fumble around until something impales you and you start over turned around facing the wrong direction at the checkpoint to make you even more lost, or randomly guessing which direction you can move in that won't instantly incinerate you. There's a very good reason why these levels are only shown once in the store page's screenshots.

The story suffers the same fate, unfortunately. What begins as an interesting story of a doomed planet and a failed Soviet experiment suddenly devolves into a mess of nothing, with ideas like the protagonist's wife or a woman potentially being the planet's cure being tossed around and randomly introduced at moments that seem important enough that you think they might actually drive the plot along only to be immediately forgotten about a few seconds later. It feels like they had a bundle of ideas for stories from multiple people on the development team but none of them could decide which to include, so it just starts five stories and doesn't adequately end any of them.

Ultimately, it's just hard to recommend this game. Even though it's only six hours on Earth, on the Lifeless Planet it feels like at least double that because of how tedious the platforming gets in the darker levels. The graphics have improved enough in the Premier Edition that the game looks nice when you can actually see it, but there are still some noticeably bad models even in extremely prominent places like the model of Aelita, the only other character in the game. The game occasionally toys with the idea of being a survival game, with multiple points in the game featuring the player running low on oxygen at scripted points and having to traverse to an oxygen refill station, but it never really does anything with it. The whole game left me feeling like I would've been having a lot more fun if they had just dropped me off back at the opening Soviet station and let me explore and try to find a way to survive on the planet while exploring and reading the backstory logs, instead of actually slogging through the mess of a campaign that's there instead. You could maybe have a good time just replaying the first few hours over and over and restarting when you reach the first night segment, but otherwise Lifeless Planet is just a hollow disappointment.

It's very odd and unusual for me to not recommend an Exploration Walking Simulator. I usually love all kinds of them.

This one couldn't keep me, only reason I kept playing this game is due to the fact that I don't like reviewing games that I haven't finished.

Nothing was really happening and the movement/controls was horrible, really jittery and I constantly got stuck in the envoirment, fell off of things and I also fell through the world multiple times.
This game is unfinished. To many bugs including random instadeaths, unreasonable invincible walls, and holes in the world that killed me multiple times. And the movement system in general, as I said, is horrible.

The game is to linear. Yes, I know this is a walking simulator but it wasn't like they usually are. There was a lack of a beautiful world to look at, lack of any atmosphere really except for triggered sound events and lack of any character. Making the walking through the designated path extremely boring, Dear Esther for example kept me invested. It didn't bore me to death like this one did. Dear Esther told an interesting story and had a beautiful world that kept my screenshot finger ready, this one did not.

The character you play has horrible voice acting, no personality whatsoever.

I wanted to enjoy the story but I couldn't due to all the other bad factors but the storyline wasn't to bad.
This, in my opinion, is far from an adventure game, it's the exact opposite. You can't explore what you want or go where you want like 99% of good exploration walking simulators let you do. You can only follow 1 path, you can only mindlessly walk along the dotted path while pressing W and jumping every once in a while and it gets to boring as I explained earlier.

And the graphics, I'm sorry but I can't let this go, this is, graphically, the ugliest walking simulator I've ever played. It looks like it was made in 2003, but no it was developed in 2014 and it has absolutelly horendus graphics, destroying yet another VERY important factor in walking simulators, it needs to have a beautiful world.

The price point is extremely high for this low content, horrible, unfinished game. 17$ is unacceptable, it's worth more like 2-3$.

I also feel like this game was dragged out to long, the story was more than finished before the actual game ended but it kept getting dragged out through filler content. This game is to long in context of the story.

I don't understand how this could also be called a puzzle game, there is no puzzles in this game, I'm sorry but if you call that hook stuff puzzles then there is something wrong with you.

Do not buy this game, trust me, I've played my fair share of walking simulators and all kinds of games that are always reffered to as "not really a game".
This game doesn't hold up. It's horrible and I don't understand how it has so many positive reviews.

Great concept for a game, couldn't be more horribly executed.

1/10.

Meant to give Lifeless Planet a go since a long time. Started yesterday at last and finished just now.

Let me preface by saying I like exploration and slowly uncovering stories through (audio-)logs. If done right it truly can make for great and immersive experiences.
Lifeless Planet is only about that. Without spoiling too much, you are an astronaut on a mission to travel to a distant planet and promptly have a crash-landing. From there you start exploring a barren and alien world which from the get-go grabs your attention with alien structures and mysterious occurrences.

The story I liked a lot. The one-man team has obviously interest in sci-fi. The pacing is fine but more on the slow-side. You have to bring some patience and be in the mood to walk. But I would not say this is a "boring walking simulator". Platforming with your jetpack and light puzzle solving are plenty. There is no shooting but that is just perfect for this game.

Given it is a small developer don't go in expecting high-poly models, high-res textures and whatnot. It might deter superficial players at first but I adjusted to it just fine after a couple minutes. One thing which I usually never give too much mind in games struck to me throughout the whole game though. Music, or better lack of therein. Big patches have no background music which made me much more uneasy than I expected. There are some short tunes at certain events here and there but they only emphasize the parts without it that much more. Music is much more important to the overall experience than one might imagine.

I don't want to spoil much, so I'll stop here. It has a great story and atmosphere and I was always interested in unraveling more about the world. Loved the ending. Recommend heartily.

Mysterious, creeping, and much more substantial than you expect

It's not a walking simulator. In terms of gameplay, this is very decidedly a third person platformer. You'll be hopping from surface to surface, sometimes making mistakes, sometimes dying. You will jetpack. You'll roll rocks. You'll use a hydraulic manipulation arm. You'll solve some simple puzzles. And yes, you'll walk and look and listen, so it has a bit of the "walking simulator" in it, but it's very much a game with game mechanics.

The Steam description for the game already tells some details from the story so I won't worry about spoiling: you're an astronaut exploring a lifeless planet, yet finding remnants of a Soviet base, and then a figure in the distance who might be friend or foe.

The game's backstory is told in bits and pieces, as you travel through setpieces on this foreboding planet. There are themes of fear, sadness, hubris, and exploitation.

It's a lower budget game, evident from the models, the terrain, the quality of the cutscenes and animations. And I think they did an excellent job working within these constraints. Even with these limits, the game manages to be engrossing, even creepy at times.

What I enjoyed
  • While it's mostly forbidding Mars-like terrain, there's a wide variety of locations.
  • The music and voice acting, top notch. The music is especially marvellous: brooding, melancholy violins and cellos, and the occasional sci-fi synth, do much to set the mood. The voices, while few in numbers, are just as engaging. The voice journals left behind (yes yes, that tired narrative device; personally I never really minded it) are in Russian and help immerse you more into what happened to the colonists that left them.
  • A few simple mechanics add some flavour to the otherwise simplistic platforming gameplay. Most of all I like the extended jetpacking that lets you cross wide chasms.
  • It's linear from start to finish, but there are a few collectibles to find if you wander off the beaten path.
What I didn't like
  • A couple of spots have fiddly platforming. Very few though.
  • One area of the game, towards the end, is rather tedious. Not only are you walking up thin walkways and jumping from one to the other, you're doing it in the dark. Thankfully, it ends before dragging on too long.
  • Some strange lack of transitions between scenes. I get the feeling there were some cutscenes that never got made, or simply that the developers had no idea how to link the two areas. Can be abrupt and jarring. I wonder if they were going for a "jump cut" feel like in films.

I can say I loved this game. If you want a semi-casual single player platforming linear experience, with a simple but engaging story, I say go for it.

(Full disclosure, haven't completed this game, but have spent about 3 hours playing) I have no idea how to feel about this game. On the one hand, the story is interesting and pulls me forward. However, at no point in a well designed game should I be asking myself "is that how I was supposed to get here?" And more importantly, I should not be CONSTANTLY asking myself that question. And I am. The controls are gluey and frequently result in falling off ledges and platforms that you need to be following. And you will be doing A LOT of platforming, making the sticky controls unforgivable. But I still want to know what happens next. I want to know the story of this far-away planet. So I'm torn. If you like a good story, then play this game. If you hate platforming, and especially hate trying to do it when your little astronaut will likely fall off the other end or overshoot the platform with no way to control the fall, stay far the ♥♥♥♥ away from this game.

Actually pretty rad

Its a super simple concept, like, you're a little dude in a barren wasteland and to progress you just have to get from A to B, but holy hell is getting from A to B a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ plight and a half. What looks to be an easy jump between rocks turns into half a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hour of WHERE THE HELL AM I HOW DID I GET HERE AND HOW THE SH*T DO I GET DOWN. I have to admit, there were a few times I had to consult a walk through, but thats probably entirely because Im just dumb.

The important thing is, I love this game. Its challenging, its weird, its curious, and everything is in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ russian, so for me, an english speaker, it added to the sense of alienation first created by being and alien on some god forsaken planet. You'll just be plodding along like "yeah okay, I see where Im going this is pretty straight forward" and then BAM DEATH. Like what??? Then you realise "oooooh yeah that was my bad I wasnt paying attention because death is literally everywhere and i got complacent because it looks like a cake walk when in actual fact IM DEAD AGAIN." But you get right tf back up and soilder on because more than anything, you do NOT want this game to beat you.

Not the mention, the achievments are hilarious and I love them and im so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ frustrated and i love it.

I highly recommend this game. Please play it. Please play it forever and cry with me.

Lifeless planet was inspired by cold war era science fiction stories, posing questions about humankind's desire for space travel. What if you journeyed across the galaxy to another planet, only to find humans had already been there? What kind of person would sign up for a one-way mission, leaving behind planet Earth and everyone they've ever known and loved... to go in search of an Earth-like planet?

Equipped with a limited-use jet-pack and a mobile robotic arm, the player must use wits and skill to solve puzzles, unravel the mystery, and survive the Lifeless Planet!

Features:

Explore 20 unique and atmospheric environments on a vast and treacherous planet.
Follow a mysterious young woman as she guides you past dangerous terrain and deadly life-forms.
Investigate the startling discovery of an abandoned Russian town.
Experience an exciting and intriguing story through rich graphics and cinematic cut-scenes.

+ It's very sad story but beautiful game.
+ At the end of the story is perfect song by music Rich Douglas

I liked the story enough to keep playing but the gameplay wasn't engaging enough for my taste. Really felt like going for a 4 hour walk. Felt like an unfinished game. There are hints of things the developers wanted to include.
