Mac Version Released!

23 juni

Hello, patient OSX users... the wait is over! I'm happy to announce we just finished testing and uploading the Mac version of Lifeless Planet. If you previously purchased the PC version, you can now download the OSX build here on Steam.

The Mac build is based on version 1.2 so it has the latest updates. If you spot any new bugs or issues, please let me know so we can address. Note that you will want to have dedicated graphics and a decently fast/recent CPU. Intel integrated graphics are not supported.

Thanks again for your patience, and hope you like Lifeless Planet!

Full Release Friday June 6

31 maj

The full version of Lifeless Planet releases on June 6th 2014! And if you bought the early access build, you'll get the full version automatically on release day. If you haven't bought the early access build, you can still do that up until release and get the lower price.

It's been a long journey from our humble Kickstarter project over two years ago. Being a one-man dev team has been particularly challenging, but rewarding as well. It's been especially great to hear all the positive feedback to the early access beta on Steam. And somewhere around 96% of the user reviews have been positive, which is more than I ever imagined it would get!

Speaking of feedback, I haven't been able to reply to all those comments and suggestions, but I've read them all and I'm extremely thankful for everybody who played the early access build and took the time to share their thoughts. MUCH of what you've suggested has gone into the final game, including:

  • Subtitles for all voiceovers.
  • Localization for German, Russian, French and Spanish (Italian is coming shortly after launch).
  • Added Steam Achievements.
  • Fixed checkpoint system.
  • Numerous gameplay refinements.
  • Lots of little bugfixes.
The only bit of disappointing news is that I haven't had time yet to finalize testing on the OSX version and I'm not sure we'll have the Mac build ready on launch day. BUT, the good news is if it is delayed, it will not be for more than a week or so at most. I promise I haven't forgotten you Mac users, and I am working hard to get this out the door as quickly as possible.

Thank you again for playing Lifeless Planet, and another huge thanks to everybody who provided feedback and bug reports. It's finally time for liftoff!

While seeking life on a distant planet, an astronaut discovers an abandoned Russian town. He suspects his mission is a hoax until a mysterious young woman saves him from a strange and deadly phenomenon... Lifeless Planet is a third-person action-adventure that features an old-school sci-fi story and spectacular environments in the spirit of classic action-adventures.

After a hard landing on the planet, the astronaut discovers the planet that was reported to be rich with life is instead a barren wasteland. When he goes searching for his crew, he makes a more startling discovery: evidence that humans have already been to this planet years ago! When he comes upon a deserted Soviet-era Russian town, he struggles to make sense of his mission. Did his light-speed travel to the planet send him back in time? Or is this all some strange Cold War hoax?

Along the way, the astronaut meets a Russian woman, Aelita, who is somehow able to survive the hostile atmosphere of the planet. Through an unusual natural phenomenon, her skin causes the soil to glow green under her feet. The player must use these glowing tracks as a guide across the planet past treacherous and deadly threats. Is she leading him to safety... or an untimely death?

Lifeless Planet was inspired by Cold War era science fiction stories, posing questions about humankind's desire for space travel. What if you journeyed across the galaxy to another planet, only to find humans had already been there? What kind of person would sign up for a one-way mission, leaving behind planet Earth and everyone they've ever known and love... to go in search of an Earth-like planet?

Equipped with a limited-use jet-pack and a mobile robotic arm, the player must use wits and skill to solve puzzles, unravel the mystery, and survive the Lifeless Planet!

Key Features:
  • Explore 20 unique and atmospheric environments on a vast and treacherous planet.
  • Follow a mysterious young woman as she guides you past dangerous terrain and deadly life-forms.
  • Investigate the startling discovery of an abandoned Russian town.
  • Experience an exciting and intriguing story through rich graphics and cinematic cut-scenes.

Lifeless Planet is a game well worth playing, surely one of the best Indie games I have played this year. It had a successful Kickstarter and passed through Greenlight to go to Early Access and to be released as completed game.

Its made by Stage 2 Studios which consists mainly of David Board, and the game is the outcome of years of passionate hard work, while it utilized all the stages an Indie project can pass through, till its released on Steam.

This game is a unique work of art that inspires and entertains with its beautiful visuals and its deep story, unlike anything you can find in big budget titles. Words hardly can express the accomplishments this game reached. Its a Sci-Fi Story Adventure comparable to the books of Isaac Asimov or Games like The Dig.

The atmosphere is carrying this game. It makes you feel lost, helpless and afraid, even sad and isolated, but then again it evokes curiosity, hope and amazement. It has very little action but a lot of exploring and platforming and a bit of quite easy puzzling. Its pretty linear, but that's to be expected from a game that tries to tell a story I guess. There could be a bit more to do in some parts of the game.

I will not reveal anything of the story, its yours to discover for yourself, because that's what the game is about. But I can assure you that it is very much worth it, if you have an open mind and search for something meaningful that you can enjoy without feeling pressured. It will take you around 5 hours for a playthrough. This is not a game for the impatient or simpleminded tough, those players will get bored or fail to grasp the storyline.

If there's one thought that I had while playing it, it was that the more you think you know about the world and the universe, the more you discover what you actually don’t know. The Storyline and ending is partly open to interpretation. Its not very strictly explained, which gives room for your own imagination. A freedom very few games ever trust the player with, and therefore it has to be complimented on such bravery.

The technical aspects of the game are robust for such a small team, reasonable performance, hardly any bugs, no crashes for me. I had to restart a level because something to advance the story didn't trigger first time, but that wasn't really a problem. Controls where fine for me with KB & Mouse, jumping around with the jetpack is a lot of fun. Gamepads are supported.

The graphical style is fitting for the game, although the way its done, also means that its looking pretty simple at times. Its definitely not a Crysis, but the aesthetics and level design make up a lot for it and make the game nonetheless a pleasure to explore and screenshot. It also has nice particle effects like dust, and the levels have a great variety of environments.

The musical score and sound is very good also, it really works well in combination with the storyline to emphasize important moments and add tension to the game. The voice acting is great, there are native Russian speakers who did the voiceovers and this makes this aspect really shine.

In conclusion I can say this game is well worth its price. The game has to be played and developers like these have to be supported. Buy and play this game, so we hopefully see more of this studio!

I hate to give a poor review for a game as I'm sure many people put a lot of time and energy into making it, but I'm just not sure that's it's worth $20. The story is pretty interesting, and really this should've maybe been a book instead of a game, because the gameplay just doesn't hold my interest.

It's a lot of really slow running through environments solving extremely basic puzzles like "put the X in the X" and jumping from platform to platform.

The music is nice, but I didn't find it to be deeply immersive like many reviewers seem to. The player character responds to the controls in a very jerky way and interesting moments are always going into cutscenes and doing other jarring things that really take you out of the experience.

If you're super bored or super high this might still be a worthwhile play for you, but if you're like me you'll find yourself just running through a lot of "this path only" monotony hoping to find another shred of plot .

Lifeless Planet - lifeless gameplay

Oh dear,

should I have looked more closely at the game before buying it? Seriously, the game did not make the impression to be a platformer. How could the players of the early access version be satisfied with what they got? Even as a platformer, this game is underwhelming and I payed 20 euro for this. Aaargh. I thought I would get my personal game of the year but I got my personal embarassment of the year.

This game seemed to have so much potential, but when I arrived at the soviet village at the beginning it started to dawn on me that something went wrong. The village was deserted, ok. But there was nothing else to do than finding one of my crewmen and searching for oxygen (last of which occured now and then later on). And of course the "puzzle" here consisted of jumping around to find parts of a code... really, how boring with 10 'o's.

In general, all puzzles are not challenging as well as most of the jumping parts. There is a barrier on my way? Oh, how nice that someone forgot some dynamite some meters away... that's one example how dull the puzzles are and they did not become more complex which I hoped.

The story and the atmosphere are both good. But even story and atmosphere are destroyed many times. Again, in the soviet village, there was nothing really to explore. Sometimes there are personal logs or that of the villagers, but they don't transport the story really well. There are some occurences that give the hero a deeper character (remembering his wife's disappearence on earth). Still, it's not enough. The hero's character keeps to be very shallow. If the gameplay is so dull and linear at least the atmosphere should suck me in. But f.e. I could not enter any of the soviet village's houses to find out the personal tragedies of the persons that lived there.

Imagine what could have been done:
- photos and other personal belongings of the former inhabitants
- f.e. finding the soviet book at the beginning of the village, reading in it, finding hints about how to activate a scientific machine to examine probes of the plant life
- the game is not so linear, the world gives more space for exploration with the danger to get lost in the desert. By carefully examining an reading logs of the people you find out how to locate the next colony or the power plant structures...

So many possibilities. I hoped this game would at least partially follow the spirit of Arthur C. Clarkes "Rama" novels or those of the Strugatzki brothers. But no... instead

this...

dumb...

platformer
