“is the kind of game that many will look over because they think they’ve played things like it hundreds of times before. It’s not. This is a project filled with incredibly smart puzzle design and an important message at its core. Anyone who absentmindedly picked it up during a sale should do themselves a favor and play right now. If you don’t yet own it, then definitely consider making a purchase in the near future. Nihilumbra is a thoroughly enjoyable experience that will stick with you. (4.5/5)”

“The whole game is great, but for me the presentation takes Nihilumbra from being a fun and clever indie game to something really special. Its presentation rivals games like Braid and Limbo. Everything looks hand drawn and a bit ethereal, a mix between a Tim Burton movie and a Jhonen Vasquez comic. The visuals are complemented by an orchestral score that’s just Danny Elfman enough, and narration that is very well voiced for the story. The tone of the game is serious, and the presentation really supports that rather than undermining it and making it come off as silly.”

“Nihilumbra shines brightest here (Void Mode). Where the story merely hints at the potential of behind its mechanics, Void Mode demonstrates their genius. It brings out Nihilumbra’s best levels, testing your mettle while retaining the game’s penchant for easily understood puzzles. The mode tests you without employing opaque logic, making you reexamine how you approach problem solving. Plus, there’s even a couple story hooks that bring some additional closure, thus sweetening the deal. (4.5/5)”

Про цю гру

Discover the beautiful world of Nihilumbra and join Born on his adventure to find himself whilst trying to escape from his inevitable curse.
Born was created from the absolute nothingness: The Void. But somehow he separates himself from the black emptiness and appears in the world. This is where his long odyssey begins, in which he will learn how to use the colors around him to gain powerful abilities and transform the world.

However, his experiences come at a high price. The Void must be one. It seeks to reclaim him and will never stop chasing him, destroying everything in its path along the way.
To survive, Born will have to condemn the earth he walks to its inevitable obliteration by The Void...

Advise: Nihilumbra has been designed in a way that everyone can enjoy its story, even without previous experience with puzzle games. However, players seeking for a challenge will find it on the second half of the game: the Void Mode.

Nihilumbra is a puzzle-platformer game. A narrator unfolds the story while you, a peculiar creature from the Void trying to escape from it. The Void is a dark, empty world within our own; Earth.

5-levels (Mountains, Jungles, Deserts, Volcanoes and Machines)
5-colors (special abilities) that you *paint* the ground in your advantage.

+Nice story
+Beautiful art
+Great Soundtrack
+Void mode is like a New game plus but more challenging
+Simple controls

-Short Story

edit-10feb: If you manage to beat Void mode there is also a secret language that changes story dialogues to funny stuff!

There are dozens― hundreds, no doubt― of platformers that mimick this one in execution, you might be presuming. There are plenty of games with an art style similarly atmospheric, others that use colour or shadow as a gameplay mechanic. What about Limbo? Contrast? Why entertain this indie game when you can play those?

It certainly isn't the first platformer to capture my heart, but there is something undeniably special about Nihilumbra and it would be a crime to dismiss its own merits because you've met your quota for indie games this year.

Nihilumbra is a bleak but beautiful puzzle-platformer, stunning in its simplicity, that struck a chord with me in an emotionally cathartic, personal way. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

You are Born, an adorable creature from The Void, who spends the game fleeing because The Void wants you back where you belong. Home. The darkness. Born must run from the all-consuming Void, adapting to his new and vibrant surroundings in the real world, encountering enemies generated by The Void, with ever intensifying (occassionally timed) puzzle-solving. His desperation to escape inevitable capture at the clutches of this nothingness is not unlike struggling with depression and it resonated so powerfully with me I was all the more encouraged to keep on going. I was compelled to help Born live.

The story mode's puzzles are splendidly straightforward― yes, this could be a turn off for some― but it does allow for appreciation of other aspects of the game, such as:

• The story itself. Nihilumbra becomes less about the puzzles and more about the message behind the storytelling, which is profound in an uncomplicated sort of way.

• The somewhat unique gameplay mechanic of using colour to traverse platforms and solve puzzles. With a flick of your mouse you can coat the floor with red to burn away the shadow of a skeletal monster or propel yourself with icy blue across a previously unconquerable gap.

• The art. You can enjoy it in game or from the concept art section of the main menu, which unlocks as you finish each level. The enemy design is fittingly simplistic but interesting as well, with an Edward Gorey flair.

• It boasts a sublime soundtrack, which is understated but accompanies the game well.

• The narrator's voice is flat (deliberately, I believe, but I might be wrong) and ominous. He often points out the obvious and it reiterates how dire a situation Born is in. Although there is an option to turn the narrator off or lower the volume, I much prefer the game with him. He adds to the sense of despondency, but I realise this is a matter of debate.

• The aptly named "Void Mode" which unlocks once you've completed the main story. This mode is tough as nails. I would argue that you haven't truly experienced what the game has to offer if you haven't subjected yourself to the teeth-grindingly frustrating (but ultimately doable) Void Mode. It is much more unforgiving and a decent challenge for those who thought the main game was a breeze.

Nihilumbra is well worth the asking price and it's a steal on sale. If nothing else, it's an easy, ethereal endeavour that should only require a couple of hours of your time to show you it is not a game to be ignored.

I'm kind of surprised there weren't more indie games with strong narrators released in the wake of Bastion. Then again, it's probably a good thing because strong narrators require excellent writing and voice acting. That didn't stop the people behind Nihilumbra from taking a swing at it, and luckily they paired their efforts with a very solid puzzle platformer.

You play a sentient piece of the Void, the nothingness that inevitably consumes all of existence. As you progress through the many regions of the world, the unnamed narrator describes how your little Voidperson learns of emotions and hope and all that jazz. Especially in the early game, the narrator has a real bad case of never-shut-the-hell-up-itis, delivering some seriously overwrought lines almost every single screen. While many of them are the tiresome "You are nothing" or "They are coming" sorts, the writing does improve the further you get in, which was a welcome discovery.

The actual platforming revolves around painting the world with the colors you find. Each region you travel to grants you a color to use, such as the blue from the snowfields that makes surfaces icy and slick. Levels are laid out in a way that eases you into learning how your new color works, showing you how to combine it with other colors, and then tests you in auto-scrolling escape sequences before moving on to the next land. The puzzles are all clever and fun to solve without being repetitive or all that challenging. Interestingly, the game keeps giving you new powers right up to the final stage, so there's always something to look forward to.

The reason for this is a Void Mode unlocked once you beat the game, which consists of remixes of the base levels. In stark contrast to the originals these start out incredibly hard and only grow more ludicrous. If I have one complaint about Nihilumbra, it's that there's really no Normal difficulty. The base game is practically a two-hour tutorial, and Void Mode is the Dark World from Super Meat Boy. I doubt that most will have the patience to plow through Void Mode, but honestly the two hours I spent in the base game was enough to make me happy. The art is clean and creative and the platforming, while a bit floaty, is a good match for the color gimmick. For charming or challenging puzzle platforming, this one fits the bill just fine.
