“is the kind of game that many will look over because they think they’ve played things like it hundreds of times before. It’s not. This is a project filled with incredibly smart puzzle design and an important message at its core. Anyone who absentmindedly picked it up during a sale should do themselves a favor and play right now. If you don’t yet own it, then definitely consider making a purchase in the near future. Nihilumbra is a thoroughly enjoyable experience that will stick with you. (4.5/5)”

“The whole game is great, but for me the presentation takes Nihilumbra from being a fun and clever indie game to something really special. Its presentation rivals games like Braid and Limbo. Everything looks hand drawn and a bit ethereal, a mix between a Tim Burton movie and a Jhonen Vasquez comic. The visuals are complemented by an orchestral score that’s just Danny Elfman enough, and narration that is very well voiced for the story. The tone of the game is serious, and the presentation really supports that rather than undermining it and making it come off as silly.”
http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2013/09/23/4cr-plays-nihilumbra/

“Nihilumbra shines brightest here (Void Mode). Where the story merely hints at the potential of behind its mechanics, Void Mode demonstrates their genius. It brings out Nihilumbra’s best levels, testing your mettle while retaining the game’s penchant for easily understood puzzles. The mode tests you without employing opaque logic, making you reexamine how you approach problem solving. Plus, there’s even a couple story hooks that bring some additional closure, thus sweetening the deal. (4.5/5)”

關於此遊戲

Discover the beautiful world of Nihilumbra and join Born on his adventure to find himself whilst trying to escape from his inevitable curse.
Born was created from the absolute nothingness: The Void. But somehow he separates himself from the black emptiness and appears in the world. This is where his long odyssey begins, in which he will learn how to use the colors around him to gain powerful abilities and transform the world.

However, his experiences come at a high price. The Void must be one. It seeks to reclaim him and will never stop chasing him, destroying everything in its path along the way.
To survive, Born will have to condemn the earth he walks to its inevitable obliteration by The Void...

Advise: Nihilumbra has been designed in a way that everyone can enjoy its story, even without previous experience with puzzle games. However, players seeking for a challenge will find it on the second half of the game: the Void Mode.

If you know anybody who does not think that computer games are art get them to play this. The animation is beautiful, the story compelling and meaningful and the programming is faultless.

It may not be the hardest game in the world but I can honestly state that every moment playing this game was enjoyable.

The title is masterfully chosen for the story content too which is brilliant, just one of those lovely little touches which you remember.

I have to say for such a low price this is an absolute bargain and one I can completely recommend. Superb work

Amazing game! I wasn't in the mood for a single player platform, yet this one caught my attention. The graphics and the intriguing story made me buy it and absolutely I do not regret it!
The gameplay is brilliant, the story is actually engaging and the idea of the art gallery...genius guys!
I do recommend this game to anybody who wants to try something easy yet special.

Overall, I don't really like this game and I don't recommend people to buy it. It is a very interesting story idea and has creative visuals and level design. I do like the main character, even though it doesn't speak or really react to anything it is likeable, mostly beecause of it's simplistic design.
My major issue with this game is the narrator. By god, I want to strangle him sometimes. His voice is very nice to listen to while playing the game but his reactions sometimes are so distracting that it takes me ou of the game. He seems to be on your side and encouraging you on your journey sometimes but then all of the sudden he'll flip his ideals and just try to bring you down. WHO'S SIDE ARE YOU ON VOICE MAN?!
I was forcing my way trying to finish this game and get to the end, only to find out there are void levels and I just said f*** that s***.

Someone kidnapped the voice of movie trailers, sedated them, and made them talk through the whole thing with meaningless drivel that causes more nihilism than it resolves.

While it is a pretty game, the mechanics are not compelling and new dangers are introduced as 'you died due to a lack of knowledge' instead of being properly introduced. That could just be the slow pacing of the narration.

Short, pretty, empty game... So I guess it fulfilled itself.

Such a beautiful game. An amazing soundtrack, unique and artistic backgrounds, and a concept i've never seen before in a game. The story is meaningful and if you don't try it for yourself then you're missing out on something great. I bought it on sale but now I wish I paid more, because the devs definitely deserve it for their amazing work of art.

Hearing just nice things about this game, I've gone and tried it.
I've to say, it was a bit less than I hoped for; even so, it was quite better than your average game.

Playability is easy and nice in basic mode; a couple hours would be more than enough to finish the game from start to end. Graphics and general look are truly interesting, with almoust rough and unrefined backgrounds to nicely contrast with the cartoonish, well-contoured protagonist and its unsettling foes. There're more than a few moments when I honestly felt scared.
Like I said, in basic mode the puzzles are quite simple - you need just a few tries to grasp the trick. There're lots of save points and not a whole heap of frustrating moments.

And then, just when you thing you've done it and won the game, the Void mode falls upon you and, well, let's just say that I've spent right now twenty whole minutes stuck in the second level. The second level! There're, what, seventy levels? Eighty?
I feel like I'll be playing Nihilumbra for a veeeeery long time.

PROs:
- Nice balance between easy mechanics and originality. It was your usual puzzle game, but with an interesting twist given by the possibility to mix colours.
- Pretty aesthetics - and pretty animations. I loved the way your small Voidling shifted and sweated in the Volcano level; I loved the lava and I loved the soft, muted, dark colours of the Living Forest, the skeletons in the Ash Desert and the way the City felt truly electric. I felt both simple and home-made, someway, and truly cared for.
- The fluidity. I was amazed by how truly un-monotonous it felt. Like, each level had its features and quirks, but it kept neverthless a fluid, uniform tone.
- The Void Mode. I'm going to eviscerate it up to the very end, but I'll need to take my time. I went all, like, ahahah, nice game, boy, going to be done with you before dinner, and now I've to decide if I want to eat somewhen between now and, I don't know, next week? It's really NOT EASY. They've an Achievement saying so, too, the "Void is hard" Achievement.

CONs:
- The Yoda Wisdom. AKA, the game's attempt to stuff corny philosophy down your throat. Like, wow, no.
- Too much writing and too much speaking. Sometimes they simply suggested to you how to pass the level - please, could you leave me some surprise? Same way, the spoken parts after a bit lost their feeling and became background noise. It's a pity.
- The simplicity of the Story Mode. It was really and truly easy to win - but now I've the Void Mode to spend my nights with!

An amateur will love the Story Mode; a skilled player will get mad with the levels of the Void Mode. I think almost everyone will be able to enjoy the aesthetic and the pleasant play. Fluid, dinamic, interesting: it's surely a very nice game and I feel like mine were well-spent money.

I'd say, 7.5/10!

Nihilumbra: Sounds better "Shadow Rage" some level are a total RAGE
==>PROS<==
-Great narrator voice.
-Some beautiful level design.

==>CONS<==
-Doesn't deserves it's money.
-Narrator voice can't keep up with the gameplay.
-Most of animations sucks.
-Bad Checkpoints locations some times.
-Ad of some level choise wouldn't be bad .
-It would have been a great co-op game with firends if all of us would choose a color and help each other.

A cute little game.

The puzzles are really easy in the beggining, but once you won the game, you can play it again in the "void mode" which is a lot harder.
It's short, not an omg-this-game-is-so-awsome's game, but it's cute, it's great, I recommend it if you like to just pass the time a little.

The mechanics are interesting and fairly well implemented, the graphics and music are forgettable yet passable, but the narration destroys this game. Firstly, the narrator is ever present, and rather than relaying a plot through environmental storytelling or immediate presentation, Nihilumbra consistently relies on the narrator's explicit descriptions. Second, the writing is extremely cheesy, constantly explicating and repeating how the protagonist, addressed in second person, is supposedly feeling as well as the considerations the game wants the player to make about the protagonist's relationship with and impact on the world. Mechanically, most puzzles are extremely easy, many solutions are given away immediately and explicitly by the narrator, and the same dynamics act as solutions to many, even subsequent, puzzles, making the levels feel like flavored repetitions of the same scenarios with no new challenge. New mechanics and dynamics are not explained through level design but rather explicated by the narrator, and the level design itself is not particularly clever although this is mostly insignificant due to the omnipresence of the guiding narration. In short, the awkward narrative explication of story, mechanics, dynamics, and solutions combined with repetitive puzzles and resulting low difficulty overwhelms the otherwise interesting mechanical potential and renders Nihilumbra a rather uninteresting game.

Nihilumbra is a puzzle-platformer game. A narrator unfolds the story while you, a peculiar creature from the Void trying to escape from it. The Void is a dark, empty world within our own; Earth.

---info---

5-colors (special abilities) that you *paint* the ground in your advantage.

+Nice story
+Beautiful art
+Great Soundtrack
+Void mode is like a New game plus but more challenging
+Simple controls

-Short Story

edit-10feb: If you manage to beat Void mode there is also a secret language that changes story dialogues to funny stuff!

I'm kind of surprised there weren't more indie games with strong narrators released in the wake of Bastion. Then again, it's probably a good thing because strong narrators require excellent writing and voice acting. That didn't stop the people behind Nihilumbra from taking a swing at it, and luckily they paired their efforts with a very solid puzzle platformer.

You play a sentient piece of the Void, the nothingness that inevitably consumes all of existence. As you progress through the many regions of the world, the unnamed narrator describes how your little Voidperson learns of emotions and hope and all that jazz. Especially in the early game, the narrator has a real bad case of never-shut-the-hell-up-itis, delivering some seriously overwrought lines almost every single screen. While many of them are the tiresome "You are nothing" or "They are coming" sorts, the writing does improve the further you get in, which was a welcome discovery.

The actual platforming revolves around painting the world with the colors you find. Each region you travel to grants you a color to use, such as the blue from the snowfields that makes surfaces icy and slick. Levels are laid out in a way that eases you into learning how your new color works, showing you how to combine it with other colors, and then tests you in auto-scrolling escape sequences before moving on to the next land. The puzzles are all clever and fun to solve without being repetitive or all that challenging. Interestingly, the game keeps giving you new powers right up to the final stage, so there's always something to look forward to.

The reason for this is a Void Mode unlocked once you beat the game, which consists of remixes of the base levels. In stark contrast to the originals these start out incredibly hard and only grow more ludicrous. If I have one complaint about Nihilumbra, it's that there's really no Normal difficulty. The base game is practically a two-hour tutorial, and Void Mode is the Dark World from Super Meat Boy. I doubt that most will have the patience to plow through Void Mode, but honestly the two hours I spent in the base game was enough to make me happy. The art is clean and creative and the platforming, while a bit floaty, is a good match for the color gimmick. For charming or challenging puzzle platforming, this one fits the bill just fine.

A Very Lovely and Outstanding Game. The Story Opened my Eyes. I saw how it is like to Grow up. Becoming Independent...And Facing your own Fears...All the while Experiencing Many New Things. A Freezing Moutain. A Lush Green Forest. And Much More. Growing up is not Easy from what I've seen on here. You make Tough Choices. And most Bite you in the back. I absolutely LOVE this game.

It's a side scrolling puzzle platformer with ALL the feels (at least for me lol.)
The story is pretty short and there are only 5 different region types, but overall I love this game.

The "story" is technically a tutorial showing you how to use all of your different powers.
The REAL challenge starts after you beat the story.
I still can't finish it... but it's so much fun.

If you love puzzles. platformers and odd games, you'll love this. XD

This game will beautifully and exquisitely take you through the experience of birth, life, death, your mortality and everything in between. This game is absolutely worth the full price, and at $1.99 for the Lunar sale, it's an incredible steal. You need to experience this. Just do it.

I was not expecting it to affect me the way it did, nor was I expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, not really being much of a platformer gamer (read: at all a platformer gamer, and actually dislike them).

Buy it. You won't regret it.

When I was a young boy,
My father took me into the city,
To see a marching band,
He said, "Son, when you grow up,
Would you be the savior of the broken,
The beaten and the damned,"

He said, "Will you defeat them,
Your demons and all the non-believers,
The plans that they have made,
Because one day, I'll leave you,
A phantom to lead you in the summer,
To join the Black Parade,"

When I was a young boy,
My father took me into the city,
To see a marching band,
He said, Son, when you grow up,
Would you be the savior of the broken,
The beaten and the damned,

Sometimes I get the feeling,
She's watching over me,
And other times I feel like I should go,
When through it all, the rise and fall,
The bodies in the streets,
And when you're gone we want you all to know,

We'll carry on, we'll carry on,
And though you're dead and gone, believe me,
Your memory will carry on, we'll carry on,
And in my heart, I can't contain it,
The anthem won't explain it,

A world that sends you reeling,
From decimated dreams,
Your misery and hate will kill us all,
So paint it black and take it back,
Let's shout out loud and clear,
Defiant to the end we hear the call,

To carry on, we'll carry on,
And though you're dead and gone, believe me,
Your memory will carry on, we'll carry on,
And though you're broken and defeated,
Your weary widow marches,

On and on we carry through the fears,
Disappointed faces of your peers,
Take a look at me,
'Cause I could not care at all,

Do or die, you'll never make me,
Because the world will never take my heart,
Though you try, you'll never break me,
We want it all, we wanna play this part,

Won't explain or say I'm sorry,
I'm unashamed, I'm gonna show my scar,
Give a cheer for all the broken,
Listen here, because it's who we are,

I'm just a man, I'm not a hero,
Just a boy who wants to sing his song,
Just a man, I'm not a hero,
I don't care,

We'll carry on, we'll carry on,
And though you're dead and gone, believe me,
Your memory will carry on, you'll carry on,
And though you're broken and defeated,
Your weary widow marches on,

Do or die, you'll never make me,
Because the world will never take my heart,
Though you try, you'll never break me,
We want it all, we wanna play this part,
(We'll carry on)

There are dozens― hundreds, no doubt― of platformers that mimick this one in execution, you might be presuming. There are plenty of games with an art style similarly atmospheric, others that use colour or shadow as a gameplay mechanic. What about Limbo? Contrast? Why entertain this indie game when you can play those?

It certainly isn't the first platformer to capture my heart, but there is something undeniably special about Nihilumbra and it would be a crime to dismiss its own merits because you've met your quota for indie games this year.

Nihilumbra is a bleak but beautiful puzzle-platformer, stunning in its simplicity, that struck a chord with me in an emotionally cathartic, personal way. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

You are Born, an adorable creature from The Void, who spends the game fleeing because The Void wants you back where you belong. Home. The darkness. Born must run from the all-consuming Void, adapting to his new and vibrant surroundings in the real world, encountering enemies generated by The Void, with ever intensifying (occassionally timed) puzzle-solving. His desperation to escape inevitable capture at the clutches of this nothingness is not unlike struggling with depression and it resonated so powerfully with me I was all the more encouraged to keep on going. I was compelled to help Born live.

The story mode's puzzles are splendidly straightforward― yes, this could be a turn off for some― but it does allow for appreciation of other aspects of the game, such as:

• The story itself. Nihilumbra becomes less about the puzzles and more about the message behind the storytelling, which is profound in an uncomplicated sort of way.

• The somewhat unique gameplay mechanic of using colour to traverse platforms and solve puzzles. With a flick of your mouse you can coat the floor with red to burn away the shadow of a skeletal monster or propel yourself with icy blue across a previously unconquerable gap.

• The art. You can enjoy it in game or from the concept art section of the main menu, which unlocks as you finish each level. The enemy design is fittingly simplistic but interesting as well, with an Edward Gorey flair.

• It boasts a sublime soundtrack, which is understated but accompanies the game well.

• The narrator's voice is flat (deliberately, I believe, but I might be wrong) and ominous. He often points out the obvious and it reiterates how dire a situation Born is in. Although there is an option to turn the narrator off or lower the volume, I much prefer the game with him. He adds to the sense of despondency, but I realise this is a matter of debate.

• The aptly named "Void Mode" which unlocks once you've completed the main story. This mode is tough as nails. I would argue that you haven't truly experienced what the game has to offer if you haven't subjected yourself to the teeth-grindingly frustrating (but ultimately doable) Void Mode. It is much more unforgiving and a decent challenge for those who thought the main game was a breeze.

Nihilumbra is well worth the asking price and it's a steal on sale. If nothing else, it's an easy, ethereal endeavour that should only require a couple of hours of your time to show you it is not a game to be ignored.

Great artworks and challanges you will find in this game. A bit challenging game but still easy to beat. Short but gold experience.
An unique Platformer-Puzzle game mixed with Adventure genre. Level design and story is impressive. Different game modes (void mode, challenging tho) and artworks which are inspectable make the game even more better. Also nihilumbra is a narrative game such as like Stanley Parable, Beginner's Guide et cetera. Well done narrator, his job is impressive indeed.

Just try this when it's on a sale (on steam or other websites)
