"It is almost cute. It is almost iconic. It is almost remarkable. It is deeply sinister. And it is one of the best games I played in 2013."

Where to Support Pathologic (if You're Inclined to Do So)

Have you heard of Pathologic?

Here’s how it goes:

A plague breaks out in a remote steppe town full of weird local traditions. Three healers try to fight it: a scientist from the Capital, the son of a local shaman, and a half-crazed girl. Each of them has their own idea of how the terrible disease came to be, and what is real magic to one of them becomes backwards superstitions to another. Taking on the role of any of these doctors, you’ll try to overcome the invisible evil while doing your best not to succumb to the disease, to bandits, hunger, and fatigue; scavenging and bartering for pills, bread, and milk. But survival is hard here.

Pathologic is the first game Ice-Pick Lodge has released—and it’s also the game we’re working on now. Weird, huh? One would suspect it must have something to do with us bumping into a Guest and rewinding time.

It was a successful bump, too: we’ve had a rather spectacular Kickstarter campaign to support the development of the remake of Pathologic.

The campaign is over—yet once again a wild paradox appears: it really isn’t.

We’ve launched a Backer Portal recently—a website where you still can support the game. You can learn more about Pathologic there, of course, and then sign up for the Portal if you find yourself interested in the game. If you like survival, plague, and despair, it may be worth taking a look.

Oh, and we’ve also got an official Steam community now—with a Curator’s List of our favourite games and all. We are planning to update it, too, and it’s the best place to contact us on Steam if you want to discuss something that’s not Knock-Knock.

Om detta spel

There is an unusual cabin deep in the woods. It had served as a laboratory and a dwelling for three generations of Lodgers.

But as of late the latest Lodger has been noticing weird changes in familiar surroundings; things are missing, noises and rattle heard. Something odd is coming out of the woods. Come night, it seems like someone's made himself at home in the twilight of rooms, attics, and cellars.

You need to stay awake and sane till dawn.

The Lodger is wandering the rooms, evading the unknown, counting minutes till morning. But it's only in the night that he can solve the main puzzle and find the answers. What's going on? Are the Guests real, or are they just figments of his insomniac imagination? What'd happened to the forest? What's happening to the cabin? Is there a line between reality and imagination?

Gameplay details

  • Hide! Play hide-and-seek with denizens of your nightmares.
  • Don't look now! The goal of each night is to reach dawn while still sane.
  • Fill in the gaps. The house aids the Lodger. You only have to fix it up and keep it in order.
  • Seek. The Lodger has lost something very important. The reason for what is happening is somewhere inside. Everything that is happening can be explained, you only need to find the key and bring it to light.
  • Wait. In this game you need to watch and listen carefully. Inspect and scrutinize. You only have to last until the sunrise.
  • Follow the rules of the game! Of course you must first understand the game being played with you.

This game is a bit of everything. Horror, jumpscares, mystery and a really nice mix of 3D world and 2D objects in a platformer. Overall a really fun game!

Cute, scary, atmospheric and weird all at the same time. The style is enough to keep my interest high, although the gameplay does get a bit repetitive.

It's essentially a creepy game of Hotel Mario plus hide and seek where the rules are different for each level and you kind of have to figure them out from narration and sometimes failure. If you still don't understand what this game is about, well, join the club. However, half the fun is figuring it out.

And it's really friggin creepy. I know the art style look like something out of a Tim Burton film, but this game scares the crap out of me and stays with me long after I play. That's why this game gets my recommendation.

This is such a strange title, it's not really a scary game, but the few bits of music and the setting make for a fairly tense evening everytime I decide to play it.

The rules of the game themselve are not very clear, and while you might be the type who will see it as a challenge, not everyone might have the patience to get punished for something they don't know that they have done.

The game can be very cryptic at times and the good ending is quite difficult to discover without reading a walkthrough, but overall i think this game was a good experience.

I get so much joy out of this game even when not playing it. Because it's a game with a lot of deep meaning there's much to discuss about it with others and exchange theories. As far as gameplay goes it's pretty limited in what you can actually do yet somehow the game manages to deliver a story that is captivating and with just the right amount of scare. The mood in the game is incredibly spot on and eerie and the tension builds up as you progress through the house.

The game exploits the fear of being home alone and monsters under the bed. In this case there really is monsters in the house, or guests as they are referred to in the game. They want to find you and you have to play hide and seek with them in order not to get caught. Doors will slam behind your back, the guests will start calling out to you and before you know it they're right next to you.

Under the right circumstances Knock-knock doesn't take very long to beat however there's a lot of replay value due to multiple endings and achievements. You can get game over in the game too so there's no guarantee that you'll even complete it your first time around. It can be a challenge, especially if you don't follow the game's advise that the game is played with you and not against you.

If you enjoy games with deep meaning and don't mind a creepy atmosphere with the occasional jump scare then I really think you'll like playing Knock-knock. I recommend checking out other games from Ice-Pick Lodge too if you get hooked.

Knock-Knock is the proof that video games really can be an art. It is a very deep and complicated game. It is not a horror nor a puzzle game, and critics who blame the game for not being scary or something like that have completely missed the point. Knock-Knock doesn't just tell you a story, it plays with your mind and asks YOU the questions.

This entire game takes place in one night(watch the clock when you have the lantern) in spasms of sleep walking and brief bad dreams. I loved it, but it made me angry, and I am sure it'll make you angry, too.

My girlfriend and I played this together, off and on for three days, trying to get the "good ending." Two things: One, it deliberately obfuscates its own systems. As in, learning the rules and dying in the process is part of the game. Two, it is about general tension and anxiety-- the atmosphere of absolute ick, not shock scares but pervasive questions about what you accept as real. It is a strangely gross-feeling game that manages to put you in a completely agitated state. Not terrified, not disgusted, not creeped out. Just agitated. To the extreme. You know, like an insomniac. Which is the point of the game. That skin-crawly, nothing-is-quite-right feeling. A world out of place.

-IF- that kind of tension and weirdness appeals, and you think it might be a cool experience to live through/conquer/think about, this is an excellent game. But I also get the feeling it'll ♥♥♥♥ a lot of people off. Whether you'd like it or not, worth experiencing.

After playing for some hours I may be somewhat stuck in Knock Knock. The game is not clear on what you must do or how you must do it. It's okay, many games do this and it's nice for us to discover on our own (Dark Souls). However I reached one of the last levels and it seems that if you do not proceed to the next level/room/dream/nightmare whatever you want to call it, you may be getting a "Game Over" screen the next time you will try to advance to the next level just like you normally would do.

Knock Knock have a very creepy and depressive atmosphere. Seems to be a great game to play in the upcoming Halloween. You will always feel that you are surrounded by someone or something, yet, you feel alone at the same time.

Now this is very clever: There are things that really help to create a tense mood in the game with such basic gameplay elements. Let's say something is approaching you. You hide but you are still visible. It's okay, because it does not matter if they can see you since it's you that can't see them, because, if you see them/it then it means they are real and if you believe they are real, then you must be hallucinating meaning you are losing it.

The game have more than one way to end, or to not end at all, in fact. Depending on some actions across the game, when you proceed further a larger enemy may be something for you and a very different one for me.

Immersion tip: In this game the sound of doors opening and closing are quite regular. If you have a sound system with a Subwoofer, placing the Sub below your desk near one of the corners gives you a much more real feeling that something or someone is really knocking a door in your house. This adds to the atmosphere giving you a more intensifying experience especially when everything is silenced and then "BAM!", someone shuts a door, and you feel the vibration.

In my opinion you don't get those jump scares we sometimes see (faked or not) on Youtube videos from games like Amnesia. In this game instead of "AAAH, Oh my God & Buddha, that is scary!!!" I got something more of: "That is creepy... go away, please, I don't want to look :( Just... leave me alone... :( " and that, is really rare in a game.

To conclude, Knock Knock is certainly a very different type of slow methodical game that relies on its solitary experience, the unexpected and its simplicity to ram home its point - which it does with an unabashed aplomb. And to think that fixing light bulbs in a game could be considered interesting is well proven here and it's this factor which makes the game a joy to play - even if you don't "get it" right away. For the asking price, the entertainment value is well worth it and a must play game if you like unconventional gems such as this one.

Knock-Knock is a little rumination about what is more dire, demons from within or from the outside? In this game you must figure out all by yourself how to play it to revel in its entirety. There are general rules told imperceptibly but each one of them has sides it takes time and retries to grasp. Knock-Knock is frustrating, hard and irritating at times, but it remains captivatingly horrifying all through the end. Lend it your ears, watch the motions carefully and believe in what you see or decide not to — control the outcome with the help of your senses.

With ingenious intended glitches like those from Anodyne, beautifully drawn visual style similar to Don't Starve's and cunning survival horror mechanics which really do improve the genre. Knock-Knock, despite not being the same game it was intended originally, is still a "phenomenon" which you absolutely should observe.

This is one of the most unnerving games I've ever played. The art is great, the chilling sounds of floors creaking, wind howling, leaves crunching and the supernatural banging on the walls of your cabin are all great on the developers part. This is a really challenging game with a mystery behind it. Scary isn't the word I'd use for describing this game, but something more like unsettling.

The first time I played it, a wind storm was happening outside and everything was shaking. I really got the natural enjoyment of being thrown into the game with all of the noises outside of my house. Even without though, it's still got me tense and heart racing, but I won't ever forget how much effect this game gave a storm.

A rather creepy randomly generated roam-a-thon, you as the main character living inside an old
house, attacked nightly by nightmares, and sleep-deprived as a result.

Keep the lights on, and escape the nightmare if you want to keep your sanity...

Nice art, nice sound direction, but the lack of direction in the story and gameplay sort of
put Lasharus off. Still, an enjoyable game.

Personal rating - 6,5 out of 10

Russian game development studio Ice-Pick Lodge based in Moscow, is a group of acknowledged indie-genre veterans focused on peculiar and non-typical gameflow and implementation, also including esoteric and philosophical aspects. In short, a buncg of brave pioneers, emphasizing not on visuals, but on depth, comprehension and artistic view. I can't say all of the projects the studio had released were success, but one thing is for sure - each of them devided both players and critics on 2 struggling groups - one group was assured they were masterpieces, while the other one considered them as pure slapstick.

Horror project (sorry, I can't call it a game) Knock-Knock lies closer to interactive performance than to your typical game. Main hero - weirdly looking fellow with "nutty professor" heircut and appearance, wakes up in the middle of the night and realizs he's not alone in his huge house. Our task is to wander around the house, turning on (or off, depending on the situation) the light, hide or run from forest monsters and do anything it takes to hasten the daybreak. Levels change each other and follow one by one - first we play hide and seek in weird guy's residence, then we find ourselves in the deep dreadful forest, making our way to the house. Sounds intriguing. And, to a certain degree, it is. The game is not that scary as it may seem. It gives a feeling of loneliness, helplessness, disturbance. It feels like you're actually inside of someone's head having a nightmare.

As a downside, the whole process is very repetitive. And that's a big minus! First 2 hours would be the best you might spend on playing Knock-Knock: you still try to figure out what the hell is going on, something or somebody cuts off the light, slams the doors behind your back, house is filled with ghosts and the dawn is still on it's way! But once you get the picture, mechanics become clear and you stumble over a "booby trap" in the end of the game which makes you start the nightmarish journey from the beginning... I doubt many out there would like to repeat the run.

Nevertheless, I take the liberty to recommend the game to all art-house lovers for it's delicate, non-typical approach and deep narrative. But don't tell me I didn't warn you!

Like most Ice Pick Lodge games, Knock-Knock is set in a sombre and dying world. A dying forest in this case, mind you. We play as a reclusive scientist who lives in a forest cabin that inexplicably keeps changing shape (semi-randomized levels, woo!). In the small hours before sunrise a bunch of unseen visitors emerge out of the woods / his mind to play a ghastly game of hide-and-seek with him.

Your main challenge will be in trying to unearth the methods by which your uninvited sojourners operate. What does that knocking sound mean? What happens when I leave on or turn off the light? Why is there a huge eldritch eye on the wall now? You will hear voices. Some of them are friendly, others sound unsettling to say the least. Sometimes they appear to give you hints, while at other times they are just trying to freak you out. The exact rules of their twisted little game seem very complex, and I predict this will add a lot of replay value.

At its heart, this game is about the monsters we create by believing they are there. It plays on those lingering childhood fears that we never quite seem to get rid of (or is that just me?). With the years it becomes harder to be truly enchanted by fantastic stories and fairytales, but darkness and isolation can still strip away the rationality of adulthood, providing a gateway to perhaps one of the few genuine ‘make-believes’ that we have left. I liked how Knock-Knock directly seems to adress the player at certain points, outlining creepy make-believe games that you can try for yourself in the small hours.

In the opening screen the game describes itself as an ‘interactive meditation’, which I think is a pretty good way to put it. Yes, the game will startle you and make you feel tense. Yet to me there was also something strangely soothing, even nostalgic (though not exactly relaxing) about traversing those empty rooms and hallways in the early morning. There are sinister forces at work that may or may not have your best interests in mind, but the game also led me to feel a peculier affinity with these ‘guests’ that came out of the woods to play with me. All the while maintaining a strong sense of impending doom.

This studio is known for making harsh, unforgiving games in which small mistakes can have disasterous unforseen consequences. But unlike other IPL games, Knock-Knock doesn’t let you manage your save-files and thus requires you to restart the whole game if you bugger up in the end. Which is what happened to me, preventing me from getting a satisfying ending. Then again, I suppose this abyss of uncertainty is part of the experience. The game lasts only 2-3 hours, and the threat of failure should be an effective way to keep up the challenge for future playthroughs.

Knock-Knock is a quirky little horror-game that puts you in a strangely meditative state of unease. Worth picking up if you are interested. Needless to say, this should be played alone in a dark room.

This game is more about "experiencing" than "playing" to me. I really don't like talking about the whole immersion thing, still I can't hesitate in this case. It really IS immersive, creepily strange, calm in its madness, thought-provoking and interesting in its own way. Can't wait to get the right mood to play it again from the beginning to the (happy this time, I hope) end.

I wouldn't recommend it to everyone though. Some may see only a boring story about turning lights on and off here. Some may say it's too short. Some may dislike the "lack of logic" or just can't "feel" the atmosphere. But if you think you're crazy enough to learn the rules of the Game - turn off the lights, close the door and wait for your Guests to come. :)

Despite of not a very successful projects by studio Ice-Pick Lodge, the game "Knock-knock" shew up very good. The main point of the game - survival. But that point isn't fascinating, as the means to achieve it.

The story tells us about the Lodger - a withdrawn person, recluse, who lives in the forest. There is only the forest, surrounding the house, but it isn't so creepy as the residence of the protagonist. Strange things happen here: things get lost, heard extraneous steps, someone knocking at the door...

Gameplay is limited in inclusion of lightbulbs in rooms, playing with somedoby invisible "Hide-and-seek" from an unknown entity, and solving the riddles. As for indie-horror it's amazing.
Scary sounds sometimes are forced to stop and think what to do next, which cannot be unenjoyable. The clock ticks, floor squeaks, you hear strange quite voice - all this creates its own atmosphere.

In total, this game isn't so bad, as many people think. I really enjoy it, when I played. My first and last advice for this game is to listen to the advice of the developers: all you need for playing is solitude and dark, qiute place.
