Yep, it's another Tropico game...

There really isn't much more to say other than that. It just feels lazy. All your old favourite buildings return, very few new ones. DLC is silly expensive, customization is meh. Save your money and go play one of the other tropicos. Either 1, or if you like roads, 3.

To elaborate.

Building Variety - Tropico has never been big on this, but it's 2014. Would it kill to have 2 models for a Bunhouse/house/etc?

Eras - These are esentially mini-goals. If you fail to achieve them within the time limit, you lose. That's about it. All they do is lock buildings from you, making it harder to layout a good city -from the start-

Ships - You get to own ships, that sounds cool, and I really thought it was going to be like Tropico 2 managing pirate fleets. But it's not. You couldn't have any less interaction with them, No naming, no colouring, and with each era, the ship just poofs into the next eras ship and keeps doing what it does. Huge let down.

Mines - Ugly eyesores that just look silly when you upgrade them. A mini Bagger 288 just sits there, and it's grosly undersized.

Tanks - Yep, I'm gonna say this too. The introduction of Tropico tanks. They are T-34. That's it. Every nation be it america, soviets, modern armour,, oh and of course Tropico, all use the same model T-34.

Bring Back TNT radio - I mean the Tropico 3 one, (but 4 is even better than this schlock).

Some of these sound nitpicky, but this is why the game just feels lazy. Would it of killed them to make a few differnt tank models? Woud it of been that much of an effort to make another bunk house?

Sure, these are just visuals, but this game is very difficult to mod. And there are virtually no new gameplay from say Tropico 3, or 4. So if the game play is the same, then the visuals better be amazing......but they aren't. Hence a lazy, forgetable, "next tropico game".

I see that Tropico 5 share the curse of all the good series, the curse of predecessor. If you already have a very succesful game in your hands, developers are facing somehow a dilemma: if they try to keep the old mechanics and game design, fans will accuse them of copying the old game. And if they try to implement new mechanics, then fans will complain about how the new game spoiled what it was good. The curse of homm3 over its succesors is the best example of that.

In case you had great fun playing tropico 3 or 4, this game probably won't give more to you only because it's developed few years later. In this perspective, i find most of fan's critics are right. Yet, for those who didn't play a tropico game before and for those who seek an enjoyable simulation, i strongly recommend Tropico 5. Particularly the campaign is well designed, and most of all game is fun.

Kalypso has recently implemented a 2000 population cap into the game to cater to people with computers from 2002. Worse, this population cap is shared in multiplayer games. In a 2 player game, with a cap of 1000 per player, you'll reach the population wall (resulting in a cliff-dive in productivity and happiness) by mid game. In 3 or 4 player games, it's possible to hit the wall before you even get out of the introductory colonial phase.

Until Kalypso implements a population slider and/or a mod toggle, I cannot recommend this.

Tropico 4 was better. Tropico 5 felt more like a slight improvement or DLC over 4, but that's it. Not worth buying on hindsight.

I cannot stress enough how disappointing this game is. Tropico 4 was fresh, a worthy update, humourous. Tropico 5 descends into racialized caricatures of Latin Americans worthy of Family Guy. The gameplay itself is lacklustre at best, with a nonsensical tech system, overly difficult and repetitive mission objectives, this game is just crap. Also, they packed the DLC into the download, which is probably the most underhanded thing publishers do these days. This won't get much more play from me and I definitely won't be buying any DLC. Pirate this trash.

We pre-ordered our copies. I didn't review this game until now, hoping that after the inital "shock" I would change my mind. I haven't.

I've been a huge fan of the Tropico series since 2001, but I'm afraid I've lost that lovin' feelin' with Tropico 5. We loved the Tropico games so much that we upgraded ALL our computers so we could run T5 (DX11) to the tune of about $400 (just for new hardware). We had no other reason/need to upgrade (nothing else, to this day, has required us to upgrade). IMHO, that is some pretty serious game love. :)

One complaint I have is muti-player: we purchased multiple copies to play TOGETHER, but it doesn't really work that way (read the forums to see why, they explain it better than I can).

The reason why I don't play anymore (single player) is because of how they make the scenaries work. It goes back and forth between TWO islands, each time continuing where you left off. That might sound good, but for me it's a total pain. I have a VERY hard time remembering which buildings were upgraded before, how upgraded were they, which ones need managers, etc. etc. etc. For me it was SOOOOO much better starting a new island each time. That way I could build not only for the general needs of my people, but for the needs of the scenario.

T5 was the only game I had looked forward to in years. My family and I are very disppointed.

The main storyline mission is short. There's the signature silly Tropico feel – but it falls flat before anything really happens with it. There's still the typos and bugs from 4 that should've been taken care of. The DLC is insulting – overpriced installments for a stupid hat, an uninteresting map with buggy mission and a new building.

The game is... prettier than previous installments? It has that going for it. The Swiss bank account is an interesting mechanic now. The Manager system is a nice touch.

Go with Tropico 4.

Tropico 5 well let's see... ah! It all began on May 23rd...

I recieved Tropico as a birthday present, which I was rather exicited about, I thought 'Oh boy Colonial era here we come! Finally I can rule in the land of Tropico with my trusty musket and sword!' but how wrong I was. I will explain why:

♦ No army reskins to match the era so enjoy modern soldiers and rebels (Even the invasions) so don't hope to get imersed visually, even the civilians are wearing the same clothes as their modern era descendents.

♦ The whole era aspect is basically a way of slowing down the game, remember Tropico 4's version where you had to buy the blue prints? Well screw that idea let's make it so that is takes you an hour just to get to the modern era where you have no choice over what you research due to you having to research everything before you can advance.

♦ Remember that whole selling point of the colonial era? Well enjoy it quickly fly by as it is one of the quickest era's to research out of with little to no significantly memorable features to it.

♦Remember that whole selling point of the future era? Well enjoy it quickly fall flat as it has barely anything deemed 'Futuristic' in it basically what we have today meaning there are little to no significantly memorable features to it.

♦ I would say the only decent feature is the decendents feature due to it being a rather snazzy idea where rather than having a singular person lead the country you instead over the course of the game have El Presidente’s family tree expanded and thrive depending on how you play.

♦Combat, Oh god don't even mention it. They made it sound like you had real control where you chose where your units went and what they attacked. What we got it the usual automatic movement and attack where all you do it decide which one is the highest priorty target.

♦Multiplayer, Barely played any due to my friend not understanding what to do so swiftly lost in the colonial era, but from what I saw the islands sorry Island is a standard sized area split between however many of you their are making it quickly become cramped, BUT I have not even got to the worst part, want to join a friend? Well have fun going through the tedious system of seeing the name but then have it vanish rapidly within the space of a second while names of others whom plan on joining a game battle to to click on the names of their friends or others which turns a simple joining of a friend into a race to which happenes first, you throwing your computer throught a window or you joining the game.

Sure you may say that I have only played seven hours of the game so I don't really understand the game to well but I had kept an eye on the game for months previous where they made it sound better than it really was.

In the end it is just over priced DLC where they had planned all their DLC for the game before it was even released.

I was introduced to the Tropico franchise around the time when the newest Sim City came out. Sim City was a massive dud and Calypso Games decided to capitalize with a 75% sale on Tropico 4. When Tropico 5 came around I was ready for more. I enjoyed Tropico 5 immensely. All the annoying little bits of Tropico 4 were wiped away and the new game style was great. Having to plan a city to last the entire franchise mode was fun. I got attached to my cities. I recommend Tropico 5.

Then I downloaded 'The Big Cheese' DLC. It was 5 bucks for a silly costume, new building, and extra missions. It was a ripoff but I was still loving Tropico so much I didn't care. The building was decent. I could never find the costume. The mission was impossible. I mean IMPOSSIBLE. I normally build my cities to use the resources well and keep my people happy. I tried this with the mission and failed to finish it within the time allotted. Begrudgingly I lowered the difficulty down to east and tried again. I failed. I was a little confused at what I was doing wrong. A month later I decided to load it up again and go for it one last time. I screwed over my citizens in the name of milk. I built as many of the creameries as possible and put all my resources into pumping out as much as possible. I failed. I see this as lazy game design. They made a great game and now are trying to just cash in until Tropico 6 comes around.

Get the game. Skip the Expansions.

So far in my limited time playing, the game has been somewhat error prone with random crashes and stablity issues. I've so far on my own traced this back to what I suspect is the game's DRM ( which is just goofy considering this is a steam game ).

Waiting to see if they can figure out what's wrong with the game and go from there. I spent money on this game so I hope to get some entertainment on it and I haven't written it off just yet... but I figured anyone who hasn't purchased it yet should keep in mind that this doesn't feel like a stable product.

The latest iteration of Kalypso Media's Tropico series, you take the reins of controlling your very own dynasty in order to create thriving metropolises right smack in the middle of a tropical island. Those familiar with the Tropcio series will feel right at home here with the fan favorite city building style that Tropico has to offer, but with some distinct gameplay, UI and graphical changes that spice up the series. For those unfamiliar with this game as well as the previous installments, the series is very Sim City-esque but with a refreshing take on the city building genre, giving you free rein on your citizens to do what you please. Want to be a absolute dictator, policing your city completely, riging elections and stopping the immigration of people all together? You can. Overall, I highly recommend this game, as well as the previous Tropico games. It might be worth it to pick up Tropico 3 or 4 with all DLC's if they go on sale before buying this game to get a feel for the series.
