So, I've seen this game get a lott of guff for not being like Tropico 4. Now, having owned both, I can truthfully say; that's not necessarily a bad thing. Should you get T4? Yes, it's a great game. Should you get T5? Yeah, it's also a great game. Why? Because they're both their own games. You'll find, as a gamer, you'll enjoy things more if you can appreciate what makes them unique instead of looking for new graphics for the same old game.

TL;DR: Don't listen to the haters, El Presidente; your people need you. (Especially on sale)

This game takes you through Eras, not just a one and done Building Cycle, Governing Factions and Trade fluxuations. I swear, T4 was almost too easy with its Factions setup (at least for me). From foreign powers to local politics each Era has its own flavor of personal dealings, edicts and the like.

The game has controller support. Yeah, I like that. I stopped trying to create Powerpoint presentations on my PS4 and likewise stopped trying to play every game on my computer with a mouse and keyboard. It's the little things I appreciate. Like also how the different buildings have their own levels of investment to affect their production levels and managers you can hire to offer little bonuses.

The way the farms and mines lay out are much more user friendly in T5 as well. It's almost seamless checking between variant crops and ranches to their respective areas to see what would fit where best. The plantations show an accurate area usage for your consideration when placing them and the overall feel of the building options seems fluid.

I personally enjoy the little stamps as the icons, I find that to be fitting to the theme of Tropico. I have no trouble knowing where the different sets of buildings are and their skins (especially as how they partain to the various eras) are vibrant and well drawn.

There's a fog of war on this game. Interesting use, you can send expeditions out there to find out what lies beyond. I like it. I like the exploration value instead of taking 5 minutes at the start of a map to see where literally everything is. There's more gaming aspects to this Tropico than there was to the last, more ways to enjoy the game besides finding new ways to make the same winning combination of goods and policies.

Basically, if you wanna hate on a game, you can find a reason. Me? I'm El Presidente, I have no time for such plebieans. Game on, fellow Dictators!

I've only ever played Tropico 4 and 5 but personally I think that 4 is bounds and leaps better.

5 Does add some content but not a lot. The only major difference is the military aspect with is absolutely loathsome and here is why:

-You cannot control the units so you have to bunch all your military buildings together on the coasts.
-There is no option to turn military or fog off
-There is this fog that you have to use your military to explore the island but you have to pay 1000 dollars for every spot you want to explore, and you cannot really direct them either making it really costly just to see the whole island.
-If your military isn't bunched up they will get slaughtered because they run up one at a time at the enemy, no matter if its a tank squad facing 2 infantry squads or not... pathetic
If you are going to add a military aspect then please just spend a little time to make it a plus and not a negative towards the experience.

This is not to mention the fact that they limit "Modding" in the steam library to making new maps and missions only. God forbid you have the ability to edit their terribly limited traffic/road system, or just improve the game engine in general.

I loved tropico 4 so maybe that plays a part in my being truly dissapointed in this game. Maybe I built up 5 too much in my head. Either way, the replayability of this game is slim to none. It strips the fun of 4 and trys too hard. Maybe it will be fixed with expansions or, even better, free updates. I won't hold my breath on that though.

This is one of my favorite games! The content is filled with little jokes and puns and things to make you chuckle (or groan!) and the game is certainly challenging on the higher settings. I play the lower ones and am challenged quite enough, thanks! I have really enjoyed the DLC, which is on sale often enough to make it affordable for even my tiny budget. One of the things I enjoy most about the game, is the replay value! I can use the 'sandbox' setting to play any goal, a known or randomly generated map, and with any level of difficulty. Add some of the DLC expansion packs, and honestly it keeps me quite busy whenever I wish to play. Challenging, without being Frustrating, and replayable without being stuck with only select missions. Fun Stuff for the price!

In Tropico Game Play You!

It's a meh title, seems like it lacks some buildings and is basically a base-game for DLC.
You can't hold valuable resources like coal, uranium, or oil for state use. I import Uranium for my Nuclear Reactor and the Uranium passes through my economy and never makes it to the Reactor. I mine Uranium and most of it was sold on the market my entire country shut down because of a lack of options for a dictator.

If they want to make a better Tropico game, make a game where you actually feel like you're telling people to get things done and not on a rollercoaster where you have no control over where even your resources go. Which a dictator would obviously have full control over, so I rate this game a fail because it does not capture what it claims to be. Other than a simple city building game where you just give people jobs and build an industry.

Perhaps I'm missing something, I'll play it for a while longer but I don't have any optimism and will just squeeze some nominal fun out of it for the 9.99 price I bought it at.

I give it a 5.7/10, but not worth picking up for full price if you already own Tropico 3.
I barely recommend this game.
