140 introduces an innovative concept in a well-implemented fashion, but fails to fully explore its own mechanics. The rhythm-based gameplay creates an exciting atmosphere, and the final boss will tie your brain in knots, but the paltry three levels offer barely an hour of gameplay. This would be acceptable if the levels were interesting, but the difficulty is just beginning to ramp up when the game abruptly ends. 140 will make you excited for its potential, then shut down before you get to the good part.

140 is a simple game, but it is a very lovely fresh game. the game is on the lines of a casual puzzle/platform game where you control a cube/triangle/circle and you just have to save all the colored balls around the levels, it has surprisingly good boss fights and great level design. Nothing was impossible and it was all enjoyable due to the soundtrack and visuals. In my personal recommendation, if you have $5 to spare on this game, you should probably buy it, if you don't have the 5 dollars, it's been on the humble bundle a few times and its not super popular, so you could probably pick it up from someone for very cheap, if not free from a friend. The best way to explain this game is fresh and relaxing. Which doesn't come very often in puzzle/platform games.

Only true regret: the game is very very short. would've been angry if it was $5, but I spent $1 on a bundle.

So now the standard game rating:
  • Story: 8/10 (Nothing is over complicated, but at the same rate you could argue no story.)
  • Gameplay: 10/10 (Beats affect the game, and has a few creative elements to it. Plenty of challenge and timing, and perfection.)
  • Presentation: 10/10 (Simplistic style, but all in all, very fitting, very fresh.)
  • Soundtrack: 10/10 (these beats don't get old.)
  • Replayability: 9/10 (Has a frustratingly hard set of mirror levels, which reward you with very rare achieves. separates the good from the mediocre.)

140 is a minimalist style platformer where the music is the key to completing levels. In the platforming you have to go from point A to point B to dodging and using objects in the map. The game has in total 3 levels with each of them having 1 endboss. The endbosses are pretty challenging and really let you know you have to focus on what is happening on screen but also to the music that you hear. What I like about the game is that it explains itself with no text, using only music and the world itself. This really helps the minimalist style. As you progress through the game, you can really hear and see that the levels are getting harder and have to think about what you are doing. The game is well designed, so when you die you know it is your fault. The music is also fun to listen to. I first played the game on okay-speakers and later on a good-headset. The difference in enjoyment was huge. So I would recommend good audio equipment while you play the game. Steam says the game took me in total 104 minutes.( I have to say that I left level 2 partway through once, so I had to start from the beginning of level 2. So the games doesn't save your checkpoints in a level. ) After you complete the main game you also unlock all the levels in mirror mode where you don't have any checkpoints. This can be fun for people who are searching for a challenge but I am not interested in playing it. All in all, the game was fun but felt too short for me. I had hoped the game had more harder levels.

In short: A nice, but short, minimalist style platformer where music is the key.

This is a pretty neat minimalist platformer, somewhat in the vein of Thomas Was Alone, only much more simple, shorter, and rhythm-based. You play as a square, and your goal is to get to the end of each level (3 in total). The only controls are left/right and jump, so it's not exactly complicated, nor are any of the jumps particularly difficult. What makes it interesting (and marginally challenging) is the timing of the jumps - you are typically tasked with jumping on or through obstacles that appear, disappear, or move in time with the music. Once you figure out the pattern of a particular area, it's pretty easy. The soundtrack is your typical indie-electronica type music, but suits the game well. Visually, although it is very simple, the look is pretty cool and even hypnotic at times (it looks like an Atari 2600 game on acid). The game only takes about 1 hour or so to complete, so keep that in mind when contemplating a purchase. If you like indie platformers or rhythm-based platformers and don't mind the price-to-length ratio, give it a go. Otherwise, if you're on the fence, I'd say wait for a 50% off (or more) sale.

Your aim in this game is to proceed through the levels bypassing various obstacles. When your character is stationary you're a 'square', a 'circle' when you run and a 'triangle' when you jump. Timing and concentration is absolutely crucial in overcoming these challenges. The game isn't easy and I found it sometimes demanding. Thanks to the checkpoint system, you don't have to start from the beginning when you lose a life. Once you finish the game, you can replay it in difficult mode. But I would like to add that at this level, you won't be able to use checkpoint location or even save. The Boss challenges are quiet creative. As a result I can say that this is a perfect rhythm-based platform game. My Score: 9/10

Good game. Got it for cents, worth it. Play it to focus your mind on one simple task. Relaxing.

Trial and error will take you a long way on 140, but not all the way since you will need also timing and patience to advance in this simple yet well-crafted game. Jump all over the place, planning beforehand your movements to avoid falls that'll force you to start over. Get your prize, deliver it, and move on to the next challenge.

All aspects of the game are good enough given the premise: controls respond, graphics are basic (but that's the idea on a minimalist game) and the music generates an ambient that allows to concentrate on the task at hand. All that being said, the game's backgrounds tend to be a little off-putting, and the dynamic becomes repetitive; but if you purchased this game you're looking for that anyway.

A very fun way to spend an hour. Minimalistic but the controls are exact and when you manage to traverse a particularly difficult section it is enormously satisfying.

140/140

It's a very shot game (with a hardcore mirror-mode after you complete the game if you want extra challenge) that utilizes music in it's gameplay in a clever way. Great sounds and nice gameplay, just wished it could've been a bit (way) longer.

An excellent example of style over substance.

140 pulls its minimalist aesthetic off decently enough, but that's about the only positive thing that can be said about the game. The platforming gameplay is as shallow as one can imagine, your only actions consisting of jumping and moving (always at a fixed speed). Since the whole game revolves around stage hazards following musical rhythms, you always progress at the pace of the levels, waiting for the right time to advance. Boss fights are a little more interesting for deviating from the main game in different ways, though you are still a slave to the game's music-based mechanics in those.

Oh, and you can beat the main game in 1 hour. It's like, three stages long, and after the end you can replay mirrored versions of those same stages without checkpoints (you can't get much lazier than that with hard modes). That's about the entire game for you.

There's nothing broken about 140. It's just that it's boring, unfullfiling and has as much content as miss south carolina's skull. For the price it charges, you can get way more interesting games around gabe's funhouse.

This game was pretty wonderful until you got to the turning boss. The game went from wondeful to horrible and I wish I could completely forget this game. It was damn near perfect for being simple but it all went out the window towards the end. Great way to destroy a great game.

This may look simple like what you can do wih MSpaint.
But after playing this game you will know that this is a great platformer game.
The minimalistic of this game is the strong point.

The main game is enjoyable but short. For me, the most beautifully frustratingly rewarding part was finishing the mirror modes, which requires precision and no small amount of practice. The game guides you through with the music and the movements gradually become second nature making this oddly relaxing in between the ragequits.

140 is a cataclysmically colorful platformer where you play as a black shape advancing through a set of three pulsating, undulatingly cheerful yet frustrating levels. The game requires you to jump and roll your way through a series of timing-based challenges, all of which are set to the throbbing, toe-tap-worthy beat of the game's Electronic Super Joy-esque soundtrack.

Your goal throughout each level is to collect dual-colored orbs and then return them to various checkpoints. Each returned orb causes the level to fluctuate, activating moving panels and changing the game's color scheme. To collect each orb, you'll be faced with moving blocks, grey-matter platforms that kill you on contact, and tricky tests of your ability to time impressively challenging jumps. However, the levels provide plenty of checkpoints, saving your progress before each threat you face.

The end of each level features, like most games, a boss. The boss levels of 140 are the only times when your otherwise peaceful shape is armed with a weapon: a beam that shoots out of your shape automatically in time to the music's beat. Boss levels are long, creatively designed levels that require you to avoid projectiles while also correctly timing your attacks, making them often frustrating (but, in the end, rewarding) moments of the game.

The only noticeable downside to 140 is its astonishing lack of true save points. While there are several checkpoints within each level that you can return to when you die, exiting out of the game entirely will cause your progress in each level to be lost. Therefore, each level must be beat in one sitting, otherwise you'll simply have to start completely over next time you come back to the game.

Despite this, the game is both fun and challenging and, if you manage to make it through all three levels, the end will unlock three extra bonus levels that allow you to play the first three levels backwards without checkpoints. This added challenge adds a few extra hours of gameplay—I have to assume, since I've never been skilled enough to play the bonus levels!

140 is a cool platform puzzle game that matches colors with a musical background. It's not a pattern or dance game, it's just a straight platformer with a unique design. Relatively short and worth the money.
