Vince Rowe Reviews

A great little platformer with a high emphasis on music!
Verdict - 8.0/10

Scroll to the bottom for an 'Overall' on the game.

Gameplay - 8/10:

There's not really much to say about this game to be honest, it's your typical simple styled plat-former but with a high emphasis on timing and as a result the music that is played. Everything in the world moves to the beat of the music, effectively you could probably complete parts of this game with your eyes closed; judging it by the beat of the music. I did really enjoy the plat-forming of this game though, I just wish that it was longer with some more mechanics added in.

Audio - 8/10:

This is where the game really shines, like I said before, everything in the world is tied in with the music, it all flows really well and the music itself sounds really bloody cool as well. It's techno-style music... Kind of hard to describe but below you'll find a Gameplay and Commentary on my channel so you can hear it there anyways (Coming soon...).

Overall - 8.0/10:

Even though this game was very short I really enjoyed it, the sound absolutely makes this game what it is and the visuals just look really crisp. The developer(s) obviously knew what kind of game they wanted to create and they made it. I'd say it's more of an art piece than a game! Unfortunately I completed the normal mode in about 45 minutes making it pretty a pretty pricey 'bang for buck' when it comes to games.

PROS:
- Intro.
- Beat.
- Music.
- Rhythm.
- Mechanics.
- Graphics.
- Design.
- Visual.
- Outro.

CONS:
- Mirror levels can give you hell if you suck.

Final Remarks:
Don't let the extremely simplistically minimalistic visuals deceive you.
140 isn't just yet another indie game; it's pure art.
No need for more explanation; play it.
You are welcome.

. RECOMMENDED .

Its a super simple idea executed with an unprecedented display of style. Worth paying full price, even if it is a bit short. The quality here is great! I'd have easily put 5 to 10 dollars in quarters into an arcade machine to play it through. In fact, I might build myself a machine just so I can put this on it and play from time to time.

This is a challenging platformer with some of the best music I've heard in a game since things like 'Sword and Sworcery EP' and 'Fez'. The music itself as well as some of the visuals are quite reminiscent of 'Fez' although they are very different games.

When you first open the game, you are treated to the music straight away. There is no menu or text, other than the large '140' in the middle of the screen. Upon pressing any button you are thrust into the game itself, still with no instructions. This isn't a game for those new to the platforming genre, but those who have played the simplest flash game will easily be able to understand what to do.

Each level of the game has it's own music to match the obstacles present there. You will need the music on, as all the obstacles are synced up to the beat and mastering the rhythms can mean the difference between life and death. At the end of each level there is a boss, it will challenge the skills you have learnt through the level leading up to it. These bosses aren't the typical 'fights' you may be used to from other games, but I find them to be fairer and more challenging than most.

I absolutely adore the visual style of the game and the way it matches the music so well. The simplest touches can effect the game massively and when you first play it can be overwhelming, especially when you die. The patterns in the background that seemingly dance to the music fit the rest of the levels perfectly and aren't distracting or annoying, even when you are stuck on a particularly difficult section.

Overall this is one of the best platformers I have ever played, the controls are extremely responsive and I never felt like I died because it was the game's fault. For the price there is the perfect amount of content in my opinion. With just enough challenge and variety to give you a few hours of gameplay, and even more if you want all the achievements.

I would give '140' 5 stars, 10/10, 8/8 or whatever rating system you prefer, I love it. I will certainly be buying the soundtrack and I hope a sequel will be made one day. Great game!

Simple, but is that really a bad thing?

There's a focus on rhythm/timing and reaction speed.

Near the end the game ramps up difficulty, but it never ends up being too much. 140 is the most difficult at the very end, and that's a bonus for me. Too many games fizzle out with an easy end/boss.

However the game really shines after you beat it. Finishing the game unlocks the same 3 levels mirrored and in hardcore. That means to truly finish the game, you must learn the levels without dying. Had a lot of fun.

Can't say this is for everyone, but I'm glad I purchased this. I loved the challenge.

Oh and the music was dope.

140 is a cataclysmically colorful platformer where you play as a black shape advancing through a set of three pulsating, undulatingly cheerful yet frustrating levels. The game requires you to jump and roll your way through a series of timing-based challenges, all of which are set to the throbbing, toe-tap-worthy beat of the game's Electronic Super Joy-esque soundtrack.

Your goal throughout each level is to collect dual-colored orbs and then return them to various checkpoints. Each returned orb causes the level to fluctuate, activating moving panels and changing the game's color scheme. To collect each orb, you'll be faced with moving blocks, grey-matter platforms that kill you on contact, and tricky tests of your ability to time impressively challenging jumps. However, the levels provide plenty of checkpoints, saving your progress before each threat you face.

The end of each level features, like most games, a boss. The boss levels of 140 are the only times when your otherwise peaceful shape is armed with a weapon: a beam that shoots out of your shape automatically in time to the music's beat. Boss levels are long, creatively designed levels that require you to avoid projectiles while also correctly timing your attacks, making them often frustrating (but, in the end, rewarding) moments of the game.

The only noticeable downside to 140 is its astonishing lack of true save points. While there are several checkpoints within each level that you can return to when you die, exiting out of the game entirely will cause your progress in each level to be lost. Therefore, each level must be beat in one sitting, otherwise you'll simply have to start completely over next time you come back to the game.

Despite this, the game is both fun and challenging and, if you manage to make it through all three levels, the end will unlock three extra bonus levels that allow you to play the first three levels backwards without checkpoints. This added challenge adds a few extra hours of gameplay—I have to assume, since I've never been skilled enough to play the bonus levels!

Roll, jump, and stop. Ball, triangle, square. Get into the beat of the music and transform with ease to the terrain.
Then do it backwards!

140 is a rhythm-based platformer. Changes in the music indicate a change in the stage. This is a good concept but the gameplay is kind of slow -- unlike most platformers, pretty much every jump requires waiting for that perfect moment.

The soundtrack is pretty great but my main problems with the game are that it can be frustrating and tedious. With the music dictating changes in the stage, you have to wait for the right moment to jump. This makes the platforming feel very slow.

There are only three stages in this game. I got it in a HumbleBundle, so I'm ok with the short length of the game but had I bought it separately, I'd feel a little ripped off.

One interesting thing is that each stage has a boss fight. The first two bosses aren't too difficult but the third boss is extremely frustrating.

Overall, 140 is a good concept but it is more boring and frustrating than fun. I think BIT.TRIP RUNNER is a much better rhythm-based platformer.

The minimalistic art style is good and so is the rhythmic timing, but that doesn't make up for the uninteresting controls or bland soundtrack.

Other minimalistic platformers (dust force, super meat boy, electronic super joy) can make up for their minimal graphics with slick, addictive controls. 140 just has move left/right at constant speed and jump. The wall grabs, double-jumps, running, sliding, etc that drive other similar games are lacking here.

Other rhythm games (bit trip runner, beat buddy) are able to make up for their limited controls with an addictive soundtrack. The thumping bass is great at first, but none of the levels have any sort of melodic hook and repetitive percussion can only get you so far.

Since most of the game objects are timed to match the music, you spend a lot of your play time waiting for the right time to jump... and waiting isn't fun.

Although the art style is great, it isn't quite enough to make it fun to play.

Don't let the simple colors and animations of 140 fool you, it has tight controls, great music, and excellent pacing that makes for a great platformer. Provided you have a controller and headphones, 140 progresses from silence to a beautiful electronic sound-stage that is essential to making progress. I beat the base game on a flight in about an hour, but the inverted levels kept me coming back for more. The art and sound design in 140 are genuinely great, but I think the gameplay could have gone a few more interesting places. 8 / 10 for a very solid short indie title.

140 is a real gem.
Like this one: http://www.knightsofpain.de/files/gem.png
This is actually a steam emoticon from the game Monaco, which is great but this is about 140.
So in 140 there is just straight horizonal and vertical geometry (except some spheres and triangles, but they are kind of evil) so it's more like this (I just rotated the gem by 45°): http://www.knightsofpain.de/files/gem45degrees.png
And the color is also plain (except the baddies they have a snowy noise on them, yuk) so 140 is actually this kind of gem:
http://www.knightsofpain.de/files/gem45degreeswhite.png
Now you see the problem, probably you cannot see the white square because your browsers background is white, for easier visibility I inverted the picture: http://www.knightsofpain.de/files/gem45degreeswhiteinverted.png
This also what your character looks like (he/she/it may be black or white).
I come to the conclusion that 140 is great, because it has nice clean geometry for the good parts, it's gender free and you can be black or white.
And it's a great game!
Edit: Just as a sidenote: Soundtrack is awesome and the mirror levels are very hard to beat :-)

I know a good game when I see one. Don't let the semi-boring preview videos turn you off just cause it's a slow geometric shape. This game is awesome.

If you like the BIT.TRIP series and Thomas Was Alone, this is a pretty cool mix, and better than both combined.

It's not as annoying as BIT.TRIP in terms of 'not being able to keep up makes the music and gameplay boring and slow'.

And it's not as bland as Thomas Was Alone.

The only downside in my eyes is that it's really short.

It also has some pretty fun bosses. I laughed at the third one wondering how it could top Super Hexagon... but it did. Until I figured out the secret, that is ;p

One of the few games where I felt the gameplay tied to the music properly. You ahve to memorise the patterns and pick the perfect time based on the music. I do reccomend this game but it's absurdly short, took me 50 minutes. Looks and sounds great, though I would have been a bit annoyed by the length had I not paid sales prices.

Very simple, easy-to-understand concept. Vibrant wordless world. And a solid beat that gets right into your bloodstream.

The game offers three relatively short levels, so you'll have it done in no time, but if you're looking for a bit of a challenge, the game lets you run through them once more, in a bit of a hardcore mode - no checkpoints - you die, you have to go from the beginning. But it is possible, even though you definitely WILL rage.

140 is pretty simple as far as the graphics and the world in general goes, but it's very attractive. If you are into these kinds of music-centered games, I would definitely recommend this.
