Outeniqua Choo Tjoe Out Now!

The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe was one of South Africa’s longest-lived and most famous steam passenger train services – and now the spectacular and challenging route of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe is available for Train Simulator!

Tracing a path between the Outeniqua Mountains to the north and the Indian Ocean to the south, the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe operated between George and Knysna in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, a distance of 67 kilometers (42 miles). The rugged line was constructed between 1924 and 1928 – and for eight decades thereafter proved a paradise for those seeking either the scenic majesty of South Africa’s Garden Route or the magic of its Cape-gauge (3-foot, 6-inch) steam railroading.

Train Simulator’s Outeniqua Choo Tjoe route features South African Railways’ Class 24 2-8-4 steam locomotive designed by SAR Chief Mechanical Engineer, M.M. Loubser and constructed by the North British Locomotive Company in 1949-1950. Weighing in at 147,000 pounds, 100 of the stylish SAR Berkshires were constructed and many remained in active service into the 1980s. And the Train Simulator route also includes a variety of authentic SAR passenger and goods rolling stock to re-create not only the iconic Outeniqua Choo Tjoe passenger train but the route’s goods and mixed trains.

The route of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe was one of the world’s most majestic and inspiring railroads – and the Train Simulator Outeniqua Choo Tjoe route includes all the remarkable features of the legendary line, from the towering Kaaimans River bridge to the reverse loops of Goukamma to the spectacular Knysna Estuary.

The Train Simulator Outeniqua Choo Tjoe route, from Dovetail Games Partner Programme member Johansteam, recaptures and brings to life all the extraordinary appeal of one of the globe’s most captivating steam-operated railroad lines!

I have an idea. Make the money points, each career route you complete, you get points and you can use those points to buy trains. Can you do that? That would make the game better. Please?

Comparing this game plus all its DLC to an HO Scale model large model train set:

Train Simulator + All DLC:
Playability: Ok-ish
Fun?: Only for the first 10-20 mins
Reliable: Not really
Play longevity: 1-2 (ish) years
Additonal Content: Trashy
Play with your friends: No, but was promised many times but never happened
Often Played: No
Price: ~$5000

HO Scale Model Train set:
Playability: Excellent
Fun?: Yes
Reliable: If you take good care of it
Play longevity: 5-10+ years
Additional Content: Really good
Play with your friends: If you allow them to, then yea you can.
Often Played: Yes and many many times
Price: There isnt really a set amount but you can invest any amount of money and expect good use of it but for the sake of this review a $5000 model train set you can get something along the line of this https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/b6/c3/8a/b6c38a4d1717085d35c6c5f026dab15a.jpg or even bigger. The only expensive part is the locomotives, rollingstock, some buildings and some tracks, the rest is totally up to you.

Go buy a model trainset or go apply to be a train engineer and get that job, either which it's more fun than buying this crap

Before you tell me that I don't need to buy all the DLC, why do you think DLC (Downloadable Content) has such a bad rep? Its only so the publishers and developers can bank on an existing franchise and continue to farm it for what its worth (Basically milking it until you beat a dead horse) If anything this game's existance gives a huge bad reputation for DLC in general. DLC horrifies everyone because it is used as an excuse to put something in the game, which was supposed to be in the game on release (unless intended), to be put behind a paywall so people have to pay for it in order to experience what they really wanted. Absolutely ridiculous.

Wake up for gods sake

Train Simulator is a great game and great to create content in. The community on the other hand is complete crap and not worth your time getting into the community with the freeware distributers and the people that do repaint commissions. Best to stay out of the community and away from 3rd party developers. Almost all the foamers that play this game are gimie pigs. Like I said the community is complete crap and full of crying babys.

TS2017 is a mixed bag of beans
While chugging along in a train can be relaxing and surprisingly fun, this game is also a source of aggravation. As example I think I have a decent computer: GTX 970, AMD A10-6700 quad Core, 8 Gbyte Ram, Windows 10 AE. I can play games like World of Warcraft and Elite Dangerous on highest settings without problems and decent frame rates.
In TS 2017 my framerate can drop down as low 6 fps in certain scenarios. I might get 20 fps if I am lucky and reduce all settings to low.
Switching from Windowed borderless to fullscreen in the settings would cause it to no longer start.
That's for the technical things.
For gameplay I have these complaints:
The career mode is too strict:
Driving your train at 101kph instead of 100kph? You lose points. One minute too late at the station? Kiss ANY points you might have accrued goodbye.

Also DLCs are extremely expensive.

Would I recommend this game? If it's for sale under $10, yes.
Full price? No.

It’s really sad that the only fleshed out Train Simulator on PC these days is this poor excuse of a videogame.

I won’t even speak much of the thousands of dollars’ worth of DLCs - some of which are little more than a badly made 3d model being sold for a full game price. There are plenty of other reviews that cover that.

It started out fun. I enjoyed it enough to invest in some extra content (the route bundles are the least overpriced). Then I made the "mistake" of upgrading my computer.

This game, which is called Train Simulator 2016 is almost unplayable on a 2016 computer, thanks to frequent crashes, consistently low framerates, ugly visuals, and FPS drops that are almost rhythmic with the movement and sound of the train.

I tinkered with the settings, between highest and lowest. It made no difference.

I emailed the developer. They replied after a massive delay, "but it runs perfectly on our much weaker computer!", and promptly closed the issue within days before I could get a chance to respond.

I asked the community for advice. They tried to convince me that it was most unreasonable of me to expect this 2016 release to run on my 2016 computer. Or how my set-up is "unbalanced" or "not good enough" despite running every other game flawlessly. Some referred to their real-life experience of driving trains, and how that has made their opinions on computer hardware and software paramount. But credit where its due - most of their passive-aggressive sermons began with hello and ended with thank you.

For people who have spent hundreds and thousands of dollars in this game, and are now unable to enjoy them, the dev's solution is to release a new game engine, which of course, will NOT support said hundreds and thousands worth of content. Meanwhile, they keep repackaging this broken software as a "new release" every year, and keep selling a thousand dollars more of DLCs, WITHOUT any warnings to buyers about the horrible expected performance, and without any commitment to give players their money's worth.

If you are still living in the last century, you might love this. Everyone else, (and I wish I could suggest a better alternative) wait for the new game engine next year.

Pre-Release Review

This developer does not support its game. It's rife with bugs and issues that get neglected in favor of churning out new content. It's not clean, it's not polished, it's just not good. Lack of competition has these devs laughing to the bank.

Dovetail Fail The Most Basic of QA Tests for the 6th Year Running...Perfect Record Continues

I buy the update to 2017 for the 5 DLC and I, at random, pick the first Career Scenario of the New Jersey Coast Line....

Imagine my total lack of surprise that the scenario has obvious flaws in it.....you really have an amzing ability to produce your output at a totally consistent level; everything you make looks like you don't know what the words test, qualiy, assurance, and many more, are.

This first scenario of NJ does not give you the eta in the HUD, there is a point just over three miles out where a 45mph speed limit is enforced that is NOT on the hud's route - it just doesn't exist as anything the player can see.

I assume you will be bringing your unparalleled lack of testing and QA to your new product, so come December I look forward to a new product developed in a couldn't be bothered, half complete way.......

The interphase is broken as of this writing - it is a laggy and buggy piece of software that needs to be fixed. Pressing a filter for engines results in a wait to get the results. I wish I didn't invest so much in the DLC. It used to work fine... but a lately it's just not worth running the game.

Nearly £3.5K worth of DLC (~280 items), the majority of which hasn't been updated since release. I don't know how that's even remotely acceptable.

Hi. Dovetail games here. If you'd like to do anything in this game you must first gives us mountains of cash. And then some more cash. Did we mention the cash? Yes, that's what you must give us lots of. Also the game is only barely adequate. But the cash. Yes, give us that.
