Hotfix: 0.7.3

A nasty little bug sneaked its way into 0.7.2. We’ve taken care of that bug now. Don’t worry, it’s fine, it just went to live on a farm.

Fixed an issue where ports weren’t forwarding properly through UPNP, causing certain players to be unable to connect to servers without manually forwarding ports.

Design and build any structure you can imagine! From mighty and legendary castles to sprawling Bricktron villages. Beware, your Bricktrons will have to take arms and defend themselves against mysterious creatures, the Corruptrons. Build catapults and hurl explosive barrels at the invaders, or lure them into strategically placed traps! The physics system will also challenge the sturdiness of your architecture! A tower whose foundation is destroyed will crumble to the ground realistically.

Castle Story is also a multiplayer experience! Challenge your friends to a round of Conquest or join forces with them to repel the enemies in the Co-Op Invasion gamemode. Of course, you can also group up in sandbox and build together!

poor controls, slow game play, and late updates.

I backed this game on kickstarter a looooong time ago thinking it was a cool looking game and i regrete it. This is a game that could be good with the right backing but sadly this game does not have the support.

Its been a long road but it was worth it in the end.

I do not think the game is 100% complete by any means but it certainly has been worth the wait if your like me and like playing single player sandbox, I love the big world as it gives you a lot more choices of what you can do and how you can do it, if you can work out how the blocks work :).

The A.I presently is sweet doing mostly everything that i would want them to do from digging along a plain and then going for the next layer of dirt or rock so they can gradually dig out the earth evenly,

Today i tried to play for a couple of hours but my computer and the house decided that today was not my day (blackout) to play but i got my testing that i wanted,

I have been testing the game on the largest world possible because it means i can stress test the game to what i think is a reasionable test. Things like flatting out an area, building on that flat area up a crooked moutain and all the while making sure the game hasn't got its niggles which are a few at this time.

Just so i can point these out. There's a double effect going on with the A.I's behaviour it seems they will take a task and split it in half meaning if they get half way done they will re-aquire there path which to me isnt a bad thing. BUTTT it can pause the game very breifly and that is why i have stated the game isn't quite there just yet but its soo close its not funny.

A feature the game needs is a Fast forward button to speed up work but i am not sure if that will ever be a thing in this game,

The game is stable, Fun, Colorful, and long lasting at least for me if you like to play for long hours on end and watch your little bricktrons run about doing tasks you have set apon them.

I am writing today on this review board because now is the time to do so, The dev's have been asking when i will do do one and i have always said that When the game is done or at least getting to a almost finnished product i will do one then,

So the game is now worth your time for single player bases, And thats how this review is.

So if you wish to get info for muliplayer this game has it along with caputre the flag and a couple of other modes in that, as well as single player being conquest where you get enemy's that attack you from different directions and you can try and survive by building a base and holding off the enemy.

But i do not play that mode so please look to other for that information.

Thank you Castle Story Dev's and I can't wait to see if you do anything else with this game.

They're still in access three years after developing the game. It's just an excuse to make an unpolished, buggy, massacre of a game. Cool concept though, unfortunately I've started 8+ playthroughs to see how it went and even after coming back after three years of waiting, it's still a dissapointment. Sorry Sauropod.

I have had this game in my library for many years, since I got it with early acces. It's still in early acces after all these years, and I still find it very hard to like this game. The development is so slow,
It think it is possible to like the game, but you need a lot of patience, and be okay with a few bugs and incomplete things in there.

I bought it in 2012 when it was a kickstarter and before it was on steam. Roughly 4 years later and we are finally seeing some progress, but it is far from finished and in my opinion far from being a fun game.

Some problems i have with the game:

- no was to speedup the game, and its slow as ♥♥♥♥. I also end up looking at my phone while waiting

- conquest and invasion, the game's gamemodes, are extremely basic and not very exiting

- the UI is so small its almost unreadable. Maybe its because I play in 2560x1440p and it doesn't scale.

- still buggy, not as much as it has been but can still ♥♥♥♥ up your game

- very few prefabs like catapults. The game has a handfull of items except for the normal building blocks.

It could become good but I really wouldn't buy it.

OK, so a while back I did a review on this game. I still said it was positive, but I basically said "It's buggy but it'll get better". And now I feel is the time to re-review it.

Let me start off by saying this is one of the coolest and prettiest castle builders I've seen in a long while. It has a near perfect arrangement of blocks to suit all of your construction needs, yet it simultaniously keeps you materials as basic as possible. You can build with Stone, or Wood. There are a few other materials that can be used to make useful structures, but those are the two things your castle is really gonna be made of. Yet in that simplicity, you can make very cool-looking castles with ease. And what's even cooler is that in the survival gamemodes, all of the castles you built for purpose and purpose alone still turn out looking amazing.

So let's talk about how you build castles. Basically, you have little yellow blobby units called "bricktrons", which you have to tell what to do. This can consist of mining, cutting trees, building your castle, repairing damages, etc. Getting them to do these things is very simple. Want to build something? Create a construction task, place blueprints, and assign bricktrons to the task, they do the rest. The way they go about building these things still isn't the best... but it gets the job done.

Then there's combat. So there's two survival gamemodes: Invasion, and conquest. Conquest has you go and capture crystals, and invasion has you defend against infinitely increasing waves of enemies. But both will have you be fighting 3 enemies: Little corruptrons, medium corruptrons, and big corruptrons. Not the most original lineup, but bare with me here. Anyway these 3 classes will act exactly like you expect. Little ones are fast, and big ones are slow but deadly. You have 3 ways of killing them. Warrior bricktrons with swords, Archer bricktrons, or catapults. In my opinion, the combat is probably one of the weaker points of the game, especially now that they nerfed your warriors. So the waves can get unfairly difficult, and you absolutely need a catapult. But even then, it's hard to learn how to lead your shots. It's not bad per say, but just be aware this game can get pretty brutal.

Real quick I'll talk about the visuals, they are just shy of a masterpeice! Fantastic texture work, a great lighting engine, dynamic shadows on the higher settings, and they did a great job of bumpmapping everything. Unfourtunately the frames can take a dip at times, and there's no real particle affects, so the distance can look a bit ugly.

And I'll be honest, the game still has some bugs. It still crashes from time to time (though it's not really all that bad) Bricktrons can have some quirky pathfinding at times, and they for some reason really want to place blocks they can't reach. Which really bothers me. Also, sometimes your knights will refuse to retreat when you tell them to, and just get pummeled. Which, again, can get very troublesome. I would advise saving regularly if you plan on playing survival.

But this game absolutely oozes charm and love. As you build your castle you grow attatched to both it, and your little bricktron minions. (For example there was one moment where I had gotten a builder stuck, so I killed him with my catapult. And that genuinley made me sad.) You start seeing your castle as the home of these little guys, and every once in a while, you pan your camera down, see all your bricktrons working, see the gorgeous lighting and shadows, as well as the majesty of your castle, and your immediately reminded why you play this game.

So, should you buy it? It depends. You can't speed up time (and for good reason, optimizing that would be nightmare for anyone) so you'll be waiting a while as your bricktrons slowly build up your castle. For me, this further strengthens the bond between me and what I've built, because I sit there thinking about how much time I've put into it. But some people aren't as patient and will get bored. Which I'm sure is where some of the more recent negative votes come from. (And some people are saying it's to complicated... what? This is as simple as they come... you wanna see a complex sandbox game, go look at Dwarf Fortress!) So ask yourself these questions:
1: Are you a sentimental person?
2: Are you patient?
3: Can you deal with a few rough edges?

If you answered no to any of those questions, then I'd say castle story either isn't for you, or maybe you should wait a little longer for more updates.

I've been following Castle Story since the very early days, backing it well before the jump to Steam, and excitedly looking forward to every dev blog and update. As the years went on, I was less and less optimistic about outcome of the game, and until recently, this would have been a very different review.

Looking at the game now (as of 0.7) I can confidently recommend Castle Story. It's been a long and often bumpy road, and I've been critical of some of the decisions made in the development process. However, there is no doubt in my mind as to the dedication and tenacity of the dev team, and now I believe they have the ability to match that dedication, and will bring Castle Story fully to its intended vision.

BEST UPDATE EVER!!!!!!!!! I made this flat map with trees on the edges and 4 player spawns.... Would be best 4 player FFA there ever was in a game!!!! (WILL BE BEST!) THIS GAME IS DESTINED FOR GREATNESS!!!! All other games that come close to rivaling it (Stronghold crusader 2) they have SET building designs, SET resource counts SET ways to get the said resources.... Here.... You can build whatever you want... however you want... NO MORE SAME HIGHT WALLS OR SAME TOWER DESIGNS I CAN FINALLY HAVE FULL BUILDING TACTICS ON A PERFECTLY FLAT MAP!!!!!! I got this game a long time ago because I really liked the concept.
Beeing able to build your castle brick by brick seemed awesome.
Unfortunately the devs did not update this game in a loooong time.
Instead they focus on their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ building challenges.
So far there is nothing to do in this game except for building castles, which do not even serve a real purpose other than to fend off the occasional enemy spawn. Thats all.
Do not buy this game if you are looking for any satisfying gameplay or depth.
Devs please update and stop your annoying building contests!

TLDR: Castle Story is a great Real Time Strategy Castle Defense game. I have been playing Castle Story off an on since it was released on Kickstarter. The game has come a long way since alpha. I would definitly recommend this game!

I'm hereby refunding this game. its plain.. whats the word? abysmal. it boasts castle building but your braindead workers can't build anything but a 2 block high mini wall before they choke up. so you're thinking "i'll just build one high walls up so they can climb!" NOPE! throw out your human enginuity for this game. they're fine climbing up 1 high walls while carrying blocks only if they're placing another one high wall. but if they need to climb up AND place a block down next to them, thats just too complex a task for their little empty heads. whats even worse is that i tasked a worker to gathering lumber, and he somehow, twice in a row, got himself stuck in between tree trunks and logs that he couldn't get out of untill i assigned someone else to move things for him.

the stupidity doesn't stop with workers oh no. i made a little knight to guard around the well i was building and the idiot climbed onto the 2 high wall and got stuck up there. was there a door? yes. litteraly right next to him. my archers also seem to have completely lost the concept of a bow, as they will only attack from melee range.

i don't have the proformence issues that everyone else has, and im sure ym pc isn't as good as them, but it does studder sometimes when they're trying to find their path.

this game isn't worth $20 or $17 for the sale.

Let me start by briefly describing what castle story is. The game is a voxel based, real-time strategy tower defense hybrid with a world editor and a building system that allows for a lot of creativity with a good physics engine. It brings back memories of my childhood playing with Legos (without the mess), allows for builds similar to Minecraft (using blueprints, gathered resources and workers instead of having to do everything through first person) and includes tower defense style elements in a world of floating islands in the sky.

The most popular game mode is called Invasion and it tests your defenses against waves of an ever-increasing amount of enemies that can knock your archers off walls, break down your defenses and even throw enemies into your base! To defend yourself you have beefy knights, archers and catapults along with various floor traps such as bear traps and explosive barrels. You can alter the world to change the direction which the enemies take or create bottlenecks where you can do a lot of damage to them. You can team up with friends to help deal with more difficult maps in coop mode. There is also a game mode called conquest where you fight the corruptrons (AI) or other players (multiplayer) for control over different areas of the map with the objective of taking over the entire map. This game type makes defenses less static and brings offensive elements to the game and you can team up with your buddies to take on the AI where you each have your own bases and units. You will inevitably build defenses and leapfrog forward, capturing more and more terrain.

Based on the recent improvements to the game, it seems the development team has grown, as can be seen in the increase to both the game quality and responsiveness in community feedback. The game’s most recent patch, 0.7, brought with it a lot of great changes and many people who played it before this patch and didn’t like it or had performance issues may want to try it again. There is now a world editor which is both powerful and quick and easy to use. Multiplayer has been implemented as well. Moreover, the performance of this game has improved greatly and your builders and warriors respond much better and quicker. While I did enjoy the game before the most recent patch, the game has improved leaps and bounds and it seems the developers have doubled down in their efforts to flesh it out and polish it. There is an active and growing community of mapmakers and active players as well, both new and old.

However, that said there are a few cons to the game in its current form: the game still has its fair share of bugs, especially prevalent in the recently introduced multiplayer. Additionally, multiplayer can be tricky to set up, though they are working on implementing a better system/ dedicated server. The game isn’t for everyone as it demands patience and planning but can be extremely rewarding once you understand the basics. While the game might initially seem simple, there is a surprising depth to it once you get to know the mechanics and since the game is still in development, your ideas and concepts might be implemented into future patches. Looking back at how much I have played and enjoyed this game, I think it’s worth the full price, though I did buy it when it was on sale. If you are dedicated to the concept or want to support an indie developer that has doubled down its efforts, I suggest you pick it up or at least put it on your wish list and wait for it to be on sale.

The verdict:

If you:
  • enjoy voxel based games that allow you to build whatever and however you want with a world editor and physics-based construction,
  • like tower defense games that test your patience and strategic thinking in which you can immerse yourself and relax,
  • like real-time strategy, resource management and building bases brick by brick,
then this game is for you.

The game bored me very fast I expected more of it. I wonder if there will be improvement in the next update.
Shouldn't have kept the game running at the time I wasn't home so i could have had my refund.

6/10 I want faster gameplay and more options!
