Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features


  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

I'm torn on this one. The idea is neat. It is not what I was expecting- I was thinking the units were more automatic a la Dwarf Fortress and randomly built a castle based on certain constraints and orders you set. No, instead, you literally choose to place a blueprint for each and every block of the castle. This is great too, but the issues arise when fighting the rough UI for terrain management and the like. The game has its own style and charm. However, at this point it has very, very awkward controls. Once you begin to get the hang of the system, it gets better, but there is still a lot of fighting against the UI when trying to align zones or work easily by switching bricks (everything runs through a right click/drag menu that has a slowness to it.)

Also, and this isn't new for games of this nature with AI beings, you will find your Bricktrons (workers) more often than not standing around doing nothing because they can't find a path, can't find resources that are next to them, or for no apparent reason whatsoever... I just had to quit my first game because a small archer tower I was making was simply deemed impossible to build by my workers- no matter how I tried to rectify issues, they stood there doing nothing, either complaining about resoruces that were i a nearby stockpile, or unable to path to some point, even though there were stairs or other means of traversal. Not a unique problem for games of this sort, but it is in need of work as of June 2016.

Now, all that said, I think the game is headed for a successful conclusion, it simply needs more TLC from the devs, who seem to be on the ball. If I could ask for one thing though, it would be a more streamlined UI with ease of use (and speed) in its place. For instance, once in "build" mode, you could quickly choose block types via the scroll wheel. I currently give it a yes, but with the knowledge it is not as smooth an experience as other games of its sort at this point. Looking forward to future iterations.

This game is fun to play!

-Yes it has bugs and other issues but that happenes with all games in alpha.
-When Playing survival you always have to be aware of whats happeneing and priorotise building or gathering for resources.

The game has a lot of potential and I can't wait to see the finished version, I will admit that when I first saw the came I was worried about buying it due to seeing many of the negative reviews.

However I haven't yet regreted buying this game.

Yes there are small issues here and there but that is because the developers are still developing the game.

For this game I would recommend buying it.

The only bad experience I had when buying an early access game was a Game called Space Base DF9 where the developers just left the game and just rushed it the finishing process so they could publish it that game had so much potential.

But this game is defenetly worth a buy!!!

This. This is a good example of tower defense and sandbox games. Definitely worth it now that the devs are becoming more and more productive with their updates.

Alright, so I've been following this game since before its alpha release on kickstarter and heres what I have to say. I absolutely love and have loved this game ever since I discovered it, but there have been some setbacks in its history. There was a long period where many fans were worried this game had stopped being developed and were all glad it has continued. The new gamemodes and maps as well as multiplayer are really great advances since the beginning. The only problem I have with this game is that the pathfinding and task AI of bricktrons is much less smooth than the AI of corruptrons. This makes sense because the corruptrons dont have to harvest resources or build anything. Unfortunately this stops me from getting very far in survival mode or reaching a victory in Conquest. This is a bit upsetting as these games can take up quite a bit of time... Then again, perhaps im just not very good. 8.3/10

castle story is very fun the develpers work hard on it the cons are 1 some maps whaen I try to open themit freezes then says its not reasponding other then a few other gliches I say it is a great game

I have got this game for a long time. I did build a lot of castles, both in Survival/Invasion and Sandbox modes. I did not do much in the Conquest mode, even though it is fun as well. What I like and what is CS good at:

Being a civil engineer I love the construction aspect: you can really build amazing castles and see how they stand against invasion waves of enemy hordes. Or you can build a set of defensive walls and trenches with towers. You can do a combination of those. The choice is yours and you can see your strategy either fail or succeed. It is kind of like the tower defence games but in 3D with real structural physics where you have to think it trough and then build it up brick by brick. I always enjoyed constructing buildings and structures in Minecraft. And this gives you another aspect: combat level.

You also have to set up archers and knights around and organize them in the most effective manner because this game is not forgiving.

This game had some issues in past. I think it had developed well from those "dark ages" and is now very well playable giving players lots of fun, with even more to come in future.

What I dislike: Friendly fire: the archers sometimes hit their own, knights are too weak (in version 0.6x). Sometimes it has to be reloaded due to stuck or unresponsive bricktrons.

Final word: I do enjoy this game but is it good for you as well? Do you like building castles and defences? Do you like strategy thinking how to protect your area? Do you like games with combat and some basic resource management? If yes this game is for you too.

After the slating this game got in early development, I'm shocked that the devs have gone on to put as much love in to it, as they obviously have. Nice work Sauropod!

Well I thought the game was abandoned long ago but its back on track. Not too much has changed, It does play a lot better, I built a huge church with 4 story pillars and it was very fun. I don't seem to be able to survive long out of sandbox mode. The first wave can be too much for my starting crew, one game I started with 11 rock dudes in my camp and died within 20 seconds. I have big hopes for this game. Love the polly graphics with the round yellow dudes. The brick by brick construction is very awesome too. I wish their could be more roles, For example sombody to carve the stone into pillars or stairs Instead of the block magicaly changing. Keep in mind its still in alpha and has been for years, the pathfinding and AI is hard to work with at times but it does work you just might need to get use to what you can do vs what you can't or you might get everyone stuck.

I have had this game for a pretty long time. I followed it for most of it's development. I got to say the game had some slow progress, but after I turned it back on recently I realized how much it changed. Lots of new things were added and the entire game looks sleek. There are still some features I'm waiting for, like a button were you can place down enemies in sandbox. However, the game is perfect for people who love biulding, destroying large towers, etc...

A promising game, I enjoy playing it so far though there are some issues like pathfinding, memory leaks increasing ram ussage and minor bugs, overall I expect them to be worked out over the course of development aswell as their news on upcoming patches are very promising, the next one at the time of this review will speed up action time aswell as pathfinding for the AI which will be very nice. This game is fun and challenging but what else would you want from a castle survival game ^^

If anything keep on eye on the game to see when the development of the game reaches a point in which you are happy with it to buy, I am happy with my purchase and look forward to future patches to make it even better. I also do not know if the price will incrase after release but it is something to look into if you plan to wait.

oh and a tip, two stone thick walls are useful aswell as putting bricks behind your archers to stop them being tossed off the walls when the corupt throw their rocks at them.
