What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Castle Story is a game in active development, meaning there are bugs and missing gameplay mechanics. Purchase Castle Story if you’re interested in seeing a game get made but only if you’re not afraid of bugs, missing features and wonky gameplay.
Castle Story is a very ambitious project created by a small, independent team and backed by a great kickstarter community! We’re constantly working on improving the game and introducing new gameplay mechanics.

We’d love to hear your opinion on our game! If you find bugs or have interesting ideas to share, please let us know on our forums at http://forums.castlestory.net”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We don't have a specific release date at this point. We'd like to continue adding content to the game and release it once we feel the project is complete.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of Castle Story is in active development - additions and changes will occur as we consider the input of our community and as the game's design evolves.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version of Castle Story is already a blast. There are several different maps and gamemodes to play, including multiplayer support on Windows, Mac and Linux. Additionally, we've recently introduced a brand new World Editor allowing the community to create their own maps, share them and play them in both single and multiplayer.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game may increase in price when it leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We welcome all suggestions, bug reports and criticism on our forums at http://forums.castlestory.net and on our various social media, including Steam, Youtube, Twitter, etc.”

About This Game

An epic adventure awaits you in Castle Story, a strategy game where you command friendly creatures called Bricktrons. Have them explore, carve, dig and gather resources from vast, spectacular floating islands, reshaping the voxel-based world to your desire!

Design and build any structure you can imagine! From mighty and legendary castles to sprawling Bricktron villages. Beware, your Bricktrons will have to take arms and defend themselves against mysterious creatures, the Corruptrons. Build catapults and hurl explosive barrels at the invaders, or lure them into strategically placed traps! The physics system will also challenge the sturdiness of your architecture! A tower whose foundation is destroyed will crumble to the ground realistically.

Castle Story is also a multiplayer experience! Challenge your friends to a round of Conquest or join forces with them to repel the enemies in the Co-Op Invasion gamemode. Of course, you can also group up in sandbox and build together!

The maps in Castle Story are meticulously hand-crafted by the developers and we’re giving you access to the same tool we use! Create your own worlds with our awesome World Editor, share them with the community and try out other player-made maps!

Three years later and this game is still garbage. Playable, with clunky UI, plenty of lag on medium or large maps. Not sure how long it will take them to get this thing where it needs to be but I've given up for another year or so. Save your money or if you feel the need to spend money on something play Stonehearth.

I bought this game like two years ago, never played it actually more than an hour or two. It was pretty garbage. Minimal to no updates, unresponsive staff and admins. It's a blimp of a project that feels more abandoned than anything.

The ai just doesn't work properly there's a 90% full stone stockpile and then they make a new one... How are you supposed to build without the stone. EDIT: Apparently I'm getting iron confused with stone however, the ai is still really buggy so, when they fix the ai, I'll probably give this thumbs up.

I backed this game on Kickstarter nearly 4 years ago, and it's still not a finished product. Not much content, very boring and barely playable. I would NOT recommend wasting your money on this.

Still a little rough around the edges, but the devs have finally started shaping sh*t up! I hope they optomize everything a bit more, but is still a total thumbs up in its current state. Keep at it dudes!

Wait and see what happens.
Bought it 3 years ago, Has taken way too long, making very very little progress, its only now running as a playable alpha.
Has potential if they pull some magic wand stuff out of the bag right at the end and make a fun game out of it, but at the moment its buggy and not appealing for long.

The video to this game got me hooked early on. It wasn't long before I finally splashed out and began sinking many hours in to the game. There is nothing like building up a huge castle (or multiple castles), along with catapults and lots of explosive barrels to fire at ones enemies.

I have only played the single player game modes, my favourite now being 'conquest' where I can dominate the map and corner the Corruptrons. I can have lots of fun making things go boom with explosive barrels!

The game is not perfect yet, there is a lot of refining that needs to take place. My main gripe is the game suffers from feeling a bit laggy once there is a lot happening on the map.

Having said that, I still thoroughly enjoy playing the game and can recommend to any one who would enjoy being creative with building brick by brick.

I really want to like this game, but it's just not fun. No pause, no job queueing, no real combat depth, no flexibility in construction... Wish I hadn't backed on Kickstarter.

Intro
I'm not going to write about how long the development of this game has taken. It's irrelevant to the game in it's current state and to be honest, I doubt any other studio the same size as Sauropod could have done it any quicker. Some studios (Hello games) could have taken another year of two with their project.

Another point before I start xD This is an objective review. I don't owe Sauropod a positive review. I'm writing a positive review because I belive the game deserves it.

Pros and cons...

Pros
  • Satisfying building elements
  • Beautiful landscape, especially with the undergrowth they showed in a demo recently
  • An easy to use world editor in which you seem to loose hours of your life if you aren't careful
  • A good game to play whilst listening to podcasts
  • Friendly staff (as far as I know)
  • You can build bloody bridges! Yeah man!! Bridges!!
  • Things explode... Need to remember not to build barrels next to my walls for future reference
  • Regular livestreams
  • Multiplayer
Cons
  • 8Gb of ram is not enough for conquest. You can manage invasion provided the corruptrons aren't digging too much
  • Some of the controls aren't explained clearly enough. I for example didn't know how to use the camera properly xD
  • Some mechanics allow you to become undefeatable in invasion mode, like digging away the island or spamming a line of archers, although that depends on the map you are playing.
  • Trees don't regrow
  • When setting a cleaning task that is above a quarry your cleaner will often decide to pick up rocks that your miners are currently mining and more often than not cause a jam.
  • Corruptrons need a way to cross empty spaces other than beeftrons throwing minitrons. Perhaps they could build fragile bridge constructions with their own bodies. The bridges would decay in a couple of minutes and every piece of the bridge would sacrifice a corruptron

End
All in all I recommend this game. Just keep in mind that it's an early access game, there is always a risk involved with early access games.

I have gotten enough good gameplay hours out of it to make it a worthwhile purchase for myself. Games as all other media is a very individual thing. I for example enjoyed the star wars prequals (insert unpopular opinion) matter of fact I think Revenge of the sith is the best movie in the franchise. So just keep that in mind. Even though I like this game, you might not.

Look, I have written a couple negative reviews about this game before, each pointing out the lack of devolopement.

Within the last 4 months the devs have putting out consistant updates, as opposed to their normal 2 updates a year.

The game is okay, but I still could not recommend it, at least untill it is fully released

What does this game have in common with No Mans Sky.... Games that were made to look cool in video trailers but are crap, boring and lacking content, bought it the week it was released.... has been updated less than 20 times. The first update took a year to get released

The game, although simple, has enough content to make $20 a reasonable price.

There's block by block castle building, survival, and if you convince a friend to get it you can play against one another.

If you like easy, relaxed RTS games then I recommend this game.

However, If you're looking for a hardcore, fully fleshed out, serious RTS then I'd recommend something else.

All in all, the game may be simple, but keep in mind that it is a work in progress and the developers are working hard to make a $20 game have $60 worth of content.

Don’t buy this game. It won’t get any better, and the dev only care about making it look nice so people waste their money on a game that’s BORING. It’s fun for the first few hours, but it gets repetitive doing the same thing over and over again at a very slow pace. Yes you can build anything you want with the same block that has different shapes and size with one or two other features, but that’s it. Ok maybe there is a wood block that you can use with a few differences. What the devs need to do but won’t is add features that make the game less boring, and not so much interesting or fun. WHAT YOU SAID NOT SO MUCH FUN, THIS COUNTER YOUR ARGUMENT… shut up and listen. Not every game has features that are fun, but instead just make the game not boring. Take the taxi in GTA as an example. It doesn’t make the game more fun to travel to the destination quicker, but if you don’t want to take the time to travel to the destination because it’s tiresome then take the taxi. Now I don’t want to be the guy who suggests things to the devs in hopes that they add it to the game, but do something to make the game less boring. It’s not hard to think of stuff like adding a mine cart system to speed up resource traffic, rope/lift system to carry stuff vertically, or deconstructable construction platforms so that building isn’t a huge mess when you make one mistake. Now I don’t know if the devs are planning to do stuff like this, but they seem really focused on making the game look pretty rather than fun, which they should be making the game more fun than pretty.
