“We started as a two-man team and after a successful Kickstarter, followed by Early Access release, eventually grew to a team of 10. Our early vision was to create a fairly small, somewhat rough game as a way to get our studio off the ground with very limited resources. Kickstarter and Early Access have allowed us to expand greatly on that original vision and to create a larger game with more unique features. We continue to use Early Access as a laboratory in which to test and grow Grim Dawn, with continual player feedback and the flexibility to add new features and spend time refining the game in a way that typical publisher funded development doesn't allow.”

“The core gameplay is well established and fun, there are 6 fully complete classes (which you can dual class to create tons of hybrid builds), hoards of loot to collect and an expansive world to explore with many secrets.

Most players are reporting between 25 to 50 hours or more for a first-time play-through of the first difficulty. Since we try to avoid "gating" the player and allow players to access Act 2 even before they've completed Act 1, it is possible to run though the game quickly, skipping a lot of content but there are also huge side-areas and secret areas, so time to finish depends a lot on how much people explore and clearing everything will take much longer then racing straight through.

Most players are reporting little to no crashing with only minor bugs. Multiplayer is available and most players are reporting a smooth experience. We continue to work on optimizing performance. More performance optimization will occur toward the end of development as programmers finish feature work and are able to focus more on it.”

Build 30: Balancing Pass and Bug Fixing is now Live!

Starting off 2016 with a bang, another big update has arrived with Build 30.

Following the game's Content Complete update in December, we can finally start looking at the finer details and focus on improving what's there rather than what we still have to add. The result of that is Build 30, the balance and bug fixing pass.

This update is heavy on Mastery changes, but there is plenty to find in the Itemization and Devotion department, as well as a few bug fixes.

Build 29 is live! Grim Dawn is Content Complete!

It is with great excitement that we announce today the release of Build 29! With this major update, Grim Dawn has now become Feature and Content Complete! This is a tremendous milestone for the game and we are proud of the work that has gone into bringing it this far. We could not be more thrilled to share it with you.

What Content Complete means to you, the players, is that you now have full access to all of the game’s content, items and difficulty modes. Nothing is blocked off, no quests remain that cannot be completed. There is no cruel Clone of John Bourbon awaiting you at the end of the line to tell you that you must wait for the next update. Starting today, you have the full experience from start to finish.

With Build 29, the finale of the story is now accessible. You can venture into the Necropolis and thwart the vile plans of the Cult of Ch’thon as they seek to resurrect the Herald of Ch'thon and usher in the end times. But that is not where things end. After defeating the final boss, you can restart the game on Elite and, eventually, on Ultimate difficulty, where the greatest challenges await. Also included in this update is our second Roguelike dungeon: the Bastion of Chaos. Only the bravest adventurers should seek out this pit of despair in the deepest reaches of the Void. Finally, with the level cap increased to 85, you have a chance to discover over 500 new Unique items, including Empowered Epics and over 240 pieces of Legendary tier equipment.

Looking to the future, Build 30 will be released in early 2016 and will include balance changes, bug fixes and polish to all aspects of the game as we prepare to take Grim Dawn out of Early Access around February.

  • Dual Class - Combine any of six distinct classes with over 25 skills and modifiers per class. Base classes include Soldier, Demolitionist, Occultist, Nightblade, Arcanist and Shaman.

Some neutral factions you can be turned into allies but aiding one will make the enemy of another. Hostile factions will remember your deeds and deepen their hatred of you, sending out large packs and elite heroes to hunt you down.
  • Devotion, an additional layer of skill customization allows you to acquire bonuses and powerful secondary effects for your class skills. These are unlocked from a giant constellation map with points acquired by finding and restoring destroyed or corrupted shrines hidden throughout the world.
  • Rebuild the World - Help human enclaves survive and flourish by securing vital necessities, rebuilding structures and rescuing survivors who can then lend their services to your cause.
  • 4 Person Multiplayer - Connect with Friends or make new allies in glorious multiplayer. Multiplayer encounters will put your teamwork to the ultimate challenge.
  • Fast-paced Visceral Combat - Enemy blood spatters, ragdoll physics and satisfying enemy death effects. Smash in doors and fight house to house, leaving a path of demolished furniture in your wake.
  • Rotatable Camera - If you choose to survey the full beauty of the world and always fight from the most optimal angle. Levels are still designed so that players are not forced to rotate the camera; it is purely optional.
  • Secrets and Perils Abound - 200+ Enemy heroes and bosses, hand-configured with their own unique arrays of deadly skills. 20+ secret areas hidden behind crumbling walls, hidden gaps and mysterious locked doors. Explode obstacles or repair structures to open new paths.
  • Rogue-Like Dungeons - Descend into special locked challenge dungeons that require a rare crafted key, where enemy levels increase as you progress and player teleport is disabled. There is no way out except to complete the dungeon or die trying.
  • Dynamic Weather - The world is brought to life with region-specific climates and a variety of weather effects. A sunny day can cloud over with mild rain showers that builds into a booming thunderstorm. Variable wind gusts blow grass and affect objects like windmills.
  • Recipe Based Crafting - Collect over 250 crafting recipes that allow you to combine salvaged components into unique crafted items and then, later, use those basic crafted items with higher-tiered recipes to complete items of amazing power.
  • Reclaim Skill Points - The ability to pay to reclaim points alleviates the fear and frustration of having to make early, uninformed skill choices that could permanently gimp a character.

Development Roadmap

Grim Dawn is now content and feature complete. We plan to spend the next month or so polishing the game, adding to the "fit and finish" and squashing bugs. Official release is expected in February 2016.

I tried out Grim Dawn about 15 months ago, and it was still pretty rough. However, I came back to it after b29 made it content complete, and it's now ready for Prime Time. Grim Dawn takes so many elements from Titan Quest that I loved, and it mixes them up with the gritty flavor from d1 and d2.

Design. That I feel is the key with Grim Dawn. I wont go over the mechanics and options as they're fairly well covered here already, but I will discuss why I hope Grim Dawn is a big success.

In something that seems increasingly rare these days, Crate have focused on making a quality product with solid design and a clear target audience, at the expense of 'mass market appeal.'

A game not rushed, not relying on cheap tricks or addictive gimmicks, DRM free, moddable, with great communication from the dev team and attention to detail and feedback.

Their approach should be rewarded, their integrity and honesty applauded. This may all seem a bit 'fan-boyish' but the example they set here should be supported and encouraged.

Will it be perfect at release? No, I'm sure there will be balance issues as the wider customer base test out the limits of builds, but that's of secondary concern in a game where the focus is on playing through the content, not pushing leaderboards. The end-game is limited, but you're missing the point a little if you're rushing to get there ;)

When I was a wee lad, I had an addiction to Diablo 2. Sure, other games would find their way on to my 500 MB HDD, but they were just visiting. That's where D2 lived.

I waited 13+ years to Diablo 3 and, well, we all know what happened there. I was left without a new ARPG that could scratch that itch.

Then stumbled upon Grim Dawn. It scratched.

The visuals are stunning and gritty. The atmophere is oppressive yet relaxing. Hit detection is perfect. Balancing seems on point. Classes look and feel unique. Skills are inventive and beautiful to execute. Loot is expansive. Mechanics are sound. MP community is wonderful. Story is awesome. Etc., Etc., Etc.

Serioulsy, if you're like me and haven't been able to find that ARPG that satisfies that craving, this is it.

This is a damn fine ARPG that doesn't insult your intelligence.

Every skill, class combination, and item has value. The Devs have so far avoided micromanaging the number of viable builds down to one per class like other ARPGS (looking at you D3). There's no always-online nonsense to deal with so you can actually play the single-player mode of the game you spent legal tender on without connecting to some corporations' server bank. There is no trade restrictions barring certain augments, which can be stripped beforehand to allow that item to be traded again.

Combat isn't too flashy, which is good because the screen isn't filled with so much ♥♥♥♥ you can't see what the enemy is doing so you can avoid it. Skills can still be visually impressive but without the Michael Bay special effects barrage so common to latter-day ARPGs. It fits the artistic and narrative theme of the game while still letting your skills feel impactful but not so overwhelmingly powerful that you can't imagine why anyone would have died to the enemy in the first place. It just FEELS right.

Furthermore, the story presented in Grim Dawn is actually quite compelling especially if you take the time to read through the dialogue and pick up all the scraps of paper left behind out in the world. There is genuine tension in the story as you piece together what happened to Cairn, and how you can help save it. Speaking of which, the world here feels connected and alive, without immersion-breaking nonsense like the copy/paste hero squads with yellow auras just in case you were too stupid to notice them or randomly-generated terrain that looks like someone emptied a jigsaw puzzle onto the table and scrambled the pieces up.

There is even a legit lore reason why you are the only person who can control the teleporters too.

All in all if you like ARPGs this game is worth every single cent of the asking price.

Hello. I rarely review. 40 year old gamer here. Been gaming my whole life...TT and PC. This is without a doubt the greatest RPG/ARPG I have ever experienced. 186.6 hours of play time later, I am still amazed at this masterpiece. It may be the best PC game ever made...but I will stick with best RPG. Seriously, the designers of this game have truly just created a work of art. That is all. Buy this game, play it to death and then play it more.
